Title: You hear a low boom...

Wouldn't be unlike Toady to go deep enough in detail to include the fact that these blighters' mating calls are known as "booms". Wikipedia even claims that they also make a metallic "ching" sound when they're done booming, which sounds about right for what you're seeing.

Or, i could be horribly wrong and it's some gigantic giant giant stomping around in the distance, looking for hapless adventurers to turn into fingerpaint.

...it being a massive statue cast from a single block of bronze and therefore unable to make any kind of metallic sound aside from maybe a hollow "doing"? At least that's how I always imagined them. I just can't imagine a colossus going "ching"

Who knew? It's more of a bass synthesizer note than a boom, like a dubstep parrot.

The sound method could be really useful. You could add Godzilla complete with the AIeGRRRrruH sound.
