Title: Dungeon Crawl 0.10 Tournament
Post by: Moron on February 24, 2012, 07:03:48 am
The Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup 0.10 Tournament (http://seleniac.org/crawl/tourney/12a/) is starting soon - how about we get some teams together as we have in previous tournaments.

If you want to play, then post with your experience level.

I was in the Champions team last time but was the weakest player in that team so don't mind dropping down to a lower team if we have enough "real" champions.

List of Players - I'll start organising into teams once there are a few more.

Bay 12 Forgotten Beasts
1. Moron (Train) - around 8 wins but plays very slowly (Captain)
2. KaminaSquirtle (Kamina) - 4 wins including 15 runer
3. Leafsnail - 15 rune win
4. AlStar - 2 wins in old versions
5. Yunor
6. vogonpoet (vogonpoetB12) - won once

Bay 12 Recruits
1. Un67 - won once (Captain)
2. Frumple (Frumple3) - 2 wins, might not have much time
3. baruk - 2 wins, not much time
4. Karlito (KarlitoH) got 2 runes
5. KJC3 (flord) - got to Zot once, unavailable for some of the tournament
6. Toaster (StToaster) - got to Vault: 7

Bay 12 Vampires
1. lerugray - one win (Captain)
2. Penguinofhonor (penguin) - never got a rune
3. Detonate (hueasn) - got to D:13
4. ardesh [ajikeshi] - got to lair
5. Drakale (Porter) did pretty good in the last tournament
6. Xgamer4

Team 4
1. Rafellows (captain)
2. ggeezz
3. lemon10 (reported missing)

Signing up in this thread then.

I just remembered, I will have to play as vogonpoetB12 instead of my usual nick, due to some CAO sign-up screw-up shenanigans.
So:

vogonpoetB12 - one solitary win, will be more than happy to get a rune this tourney.

I'm in.

Username: flord

exp:  Been to Zot once.  Consistently get to Orc and Lair.

I'll be out of town for part of the time, so putting me on one of the weakest teams would be appropriate.

Sign me up! I have four wins, one of them a 15 runer. Hope to get us a win in the tourney again this year. My cao/cdo username is Kamina.

Post by: Leafsnail on February 24, 2012, 11:37:05 am
I'd quite like to have a go - I'm Leafsnail on CDO.  I've had one 3 rune win offline and a 15 rune win online.  I should be reaasonably free at the moment since I have a lull in exams.

Post by: Toaster on February 24, 2012, 11:45:20 am
StToaster on CAO/CDO.  I'd like back in.  I've been to the lair several times and past a few times, but never a rune (Best was Vaults:7).

Post by: Frumple on February 24, 2012, 12:14:51 pm
Bleeehh...

Okay, okay, sure. Frumple3 on CAO. Two 3 rune wins (SpEn, DGFE), one in each of the last tourneys. E:But I haven't played at all since the last tourney :P

No promises on time investment, though. Might be pretty spotty, but I can die a few dozen times for one team or another, probably.

When's this thing start up? Tomorrow. It starts tomorrow. Hrm.

Post by: AlStar on February 24, 2012, 01:02:33 pm
I'd be interested in giving this a go.

It's been a while since I've played, though - CAO says my last log-in was in late 2010.

Got 3 wins on CAO, with 5, 6 and 5 runes, but they're back in version 4.5 and 5.1.

Edit: Duh, my name - AlStar on CAO.

I got a win offline, and I'd love to give this a go.

...But webtiles still seems to lack mouse support and my laptop still has no numpad. Perhaps one of those issues will be fixed for next year. I might pop online to cheer team b12 on though.

I'd be happy to play on a less serious team if there is one. I've never won, never even gotten a rune. But I'd like a reason to try and get better.

Ill try it out.
I haven't played online really at all, but I would like to try, so put me on one of the weaker teams.
That said, I have won a single game (in tiles and offline) with a 15 rune win.

I'll sign up for the casual team. I have two 3-rune wins, but I've picked up a nasty league of legends/TF2 habit, so I'll probably only manage to play about 15-30 minutes a day or so.

I'll be willing to play. I've won once, but that was a KoBe, so it doesn't really count for much. Lower-intermediate team works for me. Username is same as here.

I'll go in for the casual team. My most successful character had two runes when he died.

I'd like to sign up for the casual team. I enjoy playing but I've only gotten to D:13. I participated in the 2011 Tournament, but I was a Peasant so it doesn't really count. I can get at least 1 to 2 hours a day, especially on weekends. My CAO username is hueasn.

Post by: Moron on February 24, 2012, 04:37:12 pm
I think all the teams are going to be pretty casual, as none of us are competitive with the really elite players.

I guess I'll be the captain of the first team unless anyone else would prefer to do that.

baruk, I think you were one of the players who was in a lower team than me last time but actually scored higher...

Note that team members can be moved around or added up until 3rd March, so more people can move teams or join until then.

Um, if you say so... I think if you did play you might be the best player.

Ok, so the tournament has started and some people have already won in about the time it takes me to choose my species and class.. :o

I've put vogonpoet in my team ahead of the two players who say they won't have much time. We could change that later if we wanted, though really it's not like it matters about having all the best players in the same team.

I'll call the team Bay 12 Forgotten Beasts unless there are any objections.

Other team captains and members can decide on their team names; maybe Penguinofhonor would like to be the captain of the third team?

Edit: here is the information from the tournament page about how to form and join teams.

Maybe there should be a team called Bay 12 Vampires or something since they're an important feature of the new version...

OK Recruits, I've set up the team. Please add
Code: [Select]
# TEAMCAPTAIN un67 to the top of your rcfile. Also, I suppose I should be giving a rousing speech to all of you, so allow me to copy and paste my speech from the last tournament :P

Alright, now that the clock is ticking and the and tournament is fast approaching in only a few hours, it's time for me to give my speech to my fellow Recruits:

Let's be honest here, we're a bit of a motley group. We're at a crossroads between being newbies and being experienced, and it's a painful crossroads to come across. It's hard to break past the point where you have runes but not any wins, and I know that just as much as each of you. We're not awesome like the Champions Forgotten Beasts. We haven't pulled off multiple wins with unlikely combos or 15-runes. We're not proven like the Blacksmiths. Most Some of us don't have wins at all. And yet I believe that this tournament is our time to shine. Why? Unlike the aforementioned groups, we have the most potential to get to a higher level. First (or second!) wins are well within reach of all of us if we can play to our strengths correctly, and I'm expecting to see them! Our triumphs will be hard and unexpected, but they'll be made sooner or later. Just remember, fellow Recruits, that inside each and every one of us there is the potential to become a Champion. All Champions have their beginnings as humble Recruits, after all, and with triumph they become noticed. It's not as hard as it may sound, triumph is, once again, well within reach, you just have to believe if, if not too much (the last thing we want is overconfidence).

Now let's go get some wins, Recruits! And when all else fails... play a KoBe  :P

ffs, killed myself.

Well, got massively hurt and confused by a spore, then saw an ogre. Paniced, tried a potion, hoping for healing... and got paralysis. *SPLAT*

Had a +6/+6 ring of slaying, a +0/+2 Flachion of Elec and a +0/+2 Sling of Fire - in all honestly, this should've been a win, or at least a _lot_ deeper, because that's just gravy items.

Farewell Demonspawn Berzerker, you will be missed.

I've added Drakale to the Vampires, I assume there are no objections, so Un67 could add him to the team.

Congratulations to Kamina for a win already - I thought I was doing pretty well by getting to Lair by this time...

Don't forget that to join a team you have to put # TEAMCAPTAIN then the name of the team's captain in the rcfile. (for my team this is Train.)

I met two of my most feared uniques, Nessos and Rupert (not at the same time), and sure enough I got shot and badly poisoned by Nessos, and Rupert paralyzed me then went berserk. But somehow I managed to survive and kill them both.

Seeing as you put me in with the Forgotten Beasts Moron, I shall try to raise my game... hopefully Dr Feelgood will have a change of heart and I can get relegated to a less high profile team though  :o

Anyway, I realised my first mistake earlier on, and thus suicided a decent looking DrTm I had going which I started several hours before the tourney began, D'oh. Now I just splatted a SETm, so not sure what to do next. Maybe some Beserker action to try at least hit up the Lair...

After splatting a ton of characters, I have finally gotten one onto its feet and have cleared out most of Lair except 8 which has a nasty endvault. It's a HOMo of Trog. (Don't ask.)

I'll join a lower team, farthest i've gotten is lair and i only died because of drinking an unid'd potion of paralysis by a hydra... which i'm still unsure as to why i did that.

I've being trying out the new races. The octo race seems like it could be really powerful... but you'd need to get awfully lucky with some powerful early rings.

I've actually got a decent Felid going now (level 11 BE currently) but I'm just not seeing how they're supposed to scale up to match anything that comes at them - I've already used up two lives - once I got single-shotted by a priest, then a whole bunch of orc warriors did me in. I'm stronger now, but without some artifact rings, I just don't see how I can become any stronger than I currently am (+5 str ring, magic ring, guardian angel amulet) - there's just no slots to fill.

Hah, yeah, Oka has been uncharacteristically good to me this game. He gifted me both that randart and a demon trident early on. Anyways, I'm calling it quits for the night with the shoals and snake runes. If I win this one, it'll be my first streak! :D
Title: Re: Dungeon Crawl 0.10 Tournament

Added Xgamer4 to Vampires.

Rafellows can be captain of Team 4, don't know how many other players will join though. Alternatively, if some of the players in the other teams don't turn up, he could replace them.

My first character is still alive, though it looks very unlikely I'll get the Nemelex's Choice for MiSt now, as there have already been 4 wins with the combo and only the first 5 count. (Assuming I get a win at all that is... :-\)

edit: re Octopodes, probably the best way to get through the early game is to play an IE - Ozocubu's Armour can give some much needed AC. EEs with Stoneskin can work too. Don't know about Felids though as I've never really played them.

Wooooo! Streaked (http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Kamina/morgue-Kamina-20120227-023615.txt) with a HOFi of Oka->TSO with four runes. I considered going for the full 15, but I decided to not risk the streak.

Congrats to Kamina for the second win, and a streak!

I got a streak with  my first and second ever online wins, but it  must have been a fluke as it's never happened again.

I think Yunor really ought to be in the top team, IIRC from the last tournament, you're certainly a better player than me. I don't know if it's a good idea to start shuffling the teams around at this stage as it's going to cause confusion for the existing players, so for now I'll put you in Team 4 if you don't mind.

However, I don't know if lemon10 is going to show up, so maybe if he doesn't, I'll put you in my team later.

@Moron:

None of the teams have their full complement of players yet (http://seleniac.org/crawl/tourney/12a/teams.html), so you could probably shuffle us without too much agro - swap me out of the FBs, and either a /just stick me in team 4 (fine by me), or b/ swap me with someone who hasn't yet officially joined a team.

@Kamina:

Awesome streaky work :)

Just reading up on some of the statistics (since I'm unable to play from work, sadly.)

It appears that my ghosts have managed to kill off one other player so far, and that I'm one of only two people to have died to the vault guards.

I used to have high scores for a handful of different species/class combos, but it looks like I've been reduced to just two now - FeBe and DsCK.

There's currently 125 combos that still haven't been played. Depending on how my current game goes, I may have to start working through that list, just for kicks and possible points towards Bay12's score.

We're basically right up to the points gap between clans with no wins and clans with at least one win. Hopefully that'll get crossed in the next couple of days.

Yay! It's Yunor! Now I can pester him again ;)
Ok, can't wait ;)

I think Yunor really ought to be in the top team, IIRC from the last tournament, you're certainly a better player than me. I don't know if it's a good idea to start shuffling the teams around at this stage as it's going to cause confusion for the existing players, so for now I'll put you in Team 4 if you don't mind.

However, I don't know if lemon10 is going to show up, so maybe if he doesn't, I'll put you in my team later.
I'm fine in any team, I just don't think I can play that much.

Wooooo! Streaked (http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Kamina/morgue-Kamina-20120227-023615.txt) with a HOFi of Oka->TSO with four runes. I considered going for the full 15, but I decided to not risk the streak.

Wow, great job!

I've had my share of heartbreak recently too.

Lost a troll who had just recently found the artifact +5,+10 whip "Snakebite" {venom, rPois} I was planning on heading down to Snake, but disgustingly shortly after picking up this weapon, I run into a lowly komodo dragon. I hit it, it hits me, I hit it down to nearly dead, it hits me down to 27 hps (of 98), I invoke Injury Mirror, certain that the damn thing is going to kill itself on me... it hits for exactly 27.

I'm currently sitting on high scores for 6 different combos, and if I continue my habit of making it to ~level 9 and dying, I'll probably manage to get a bunch more by tourny end... although I'd rather, you know, actually get a win.

I must say, with the new experience system, class means almost nothing now and it's super easy to get even the most gimped-sounding combos off the ground. Troll mage? Just divvy up experience 50/50 into fighting and unarmed. As long as you can kill even a handful of critters with magic darts, you'll be able to go into hand-to-hand by D:2.

Post by: vogonpoet on February 28, 2012, 09:37:47 am
I think you would be better off putting all that XP into unarmed, at least until UA level 10 or so, rather than 50:50, but I am no expert at skill allocation. Fighting HP benefit was turned down a tad, and faster attacking (every 5 levels of UA combat skill should get your attack 1 energy cost less) is the name of the game

Have you put the team captain's name at the start of your rcfile? If so, I can only suggest that both you and the captain (lerugray in your case) double check for spelling, capitalization etc.

So, I'm thinking of swapping the teams around so that some of the people who have joined late get put into the regular teams, and those who haven't joined their teams yet go into the "Bay 12 Reported Missing" team. Currently missing players are (as far as I can see) lemon10 and Detonate (hueasn.) If the other team captains agree anyway..

I don't know if I'm being too aggressive, unlucky or what, but I just can't seem to get past level 8 or 9. On the plus side, I'm now up to 9 combo high scores, and since they're all pretty unlikely combos, they'll probably hold till the end, but damn, I'm getting tired of not getting lower then mid-Lair.

Up to level 1 on Explorer, Slow&Steady, Pious, Gelatinous Body, Conqueror, Sniper, Ruthless Efficiency and Harvest.

Well, if at first you don't succeed...

Someone, someday, is going to get eight artifact rings that all offer some sort of protection in addition to a wide variety of other useful stats.

That someone is not going to be me.

In other news, my skills do seem to be improving cause of the tournament. I've gotten a way higher percent of my characters to level 10+ now than I used to.

Tried the new spell Inner Fire for the first time on a fire elementalist. It is now by far my favorite low level spell. You do need to be careful, but damn that spell wrecks orcish mines even better than a poison mage. And the best thing is that you can cast it on multiple critters and make chain detonations. Having controlled blink help a lot though.

Nice work Moron...

My TeWz is progressing nicely - he started off basically as a summoner, but now I am thinking I might buy a book with Freezing Cloud in it and try to get more of that mid-dungeon XP for myself. Or, I could continue summoning, by a book of Burglary instead, and wait for Vehumet to gift me freezing cloud later... that might technically be the better option, although I am not sure if I have the patience to wait for those books... I could buy both books, and be broke. Decisions decisions :)

Anyway, Lair 8 and Orc 4 are now clear, and I am undecided on whether I should bother trying to find the rest of Orc (I am not a big fan of trapdoors) or just head on down the main D.

Sup Recruits.

So, the team currently ahead of us has one member, and he has nearly all of his points from ridiculously weak combo high scores.  I'm guessing those will be stolen from him in not too long, but if he still has those high scores later in the tournament, a team effort could easily steal most of them.  Either way, I have faith that we'll put together some good games and jump a few spots anyway.  Keep plugging away fellas.

Of course, I'll freely admit that when my back's been against the wall, *insert name of large, scary thing* may have gotten a wand to the face.

It really depends. I don't think it should be that bad and they tend to have good loot, but there is one tomb layout that is deadly with a bunch of nasty demons and golems and whatnot. The exit is always close, anyways, and you can just enter and leave if you don't want to take the risk.

Went for it.  Got Wucad Mu's Monastery.  Pretty easy until I had to face the orange statue.  Somehow I hadn't found a wand of disintegration yet, so fighting it melee style was a little nerve wracking.  I'll tell you what though, these new potions of curing sure made it a lot easier.

I'm pretty sure Potions of Healing were exactly the same other than having different names.  Nevertheless, I wouldn't want to take on an orange statue considering they can drain like 7 points of Int in one shot.

Oklob Plant. Guarding the temple. Dealt 41 damage to me. I had 42 HP.

Run like hell, walk around corner, orcish wizard. Drink berserker potion while scrambling for heal wounds potions, then kill two orcish wizards while I'm at 5 HP, then die to the third.

A badass end, but jesus. Oklob saplings hurt.

They did work the same as potions of healing, I guess it just seems like potions of curing are more frequent than they were.  i could be wrong though.

As for the orange statue, I Hero'd, might potioned, speed potioned, agility potioned, and brilliance potioned, and then blinked to the square right next to the statue.  I had some restore ability potions, so I was fairly certain I could kill it in time.  Definitely still nerve wracking though.

That sounds like the best preparation you could get outside of disintegration I guess.  I'm just remembering that Orange Statue that instantly int drained me on some early D floor and left me with reduced int all the way to swamp due to me not being able to drink potions.

Ouch, that thing hit you for more than half your total health in one hit. They get really dangerous when they stack up that high.

You got sucked in by the "is almost dead" gambit (when you keep swinging at a monster, even when you should probably run, because you keep telling yourself 'ooh, it's nearly dead') - looking at your map, you probably should have fallen back behind your zombies... but when you're losing so much health all at once, I guess there's not much warning for when you should bug out.

The main thing to take away from that is to not let Very Large Slime Creatures attack you.  They are seriously dangerous for a low health character.  If they're split up they have the same overall damage but you get an AC check on all of them and it doesn't come in one huge lump.

Thanks to you Kamina for the help!  Un67, your pep talk must've worked.  I've got a good feeling about the future of the Recruits, not to mention the Beasts who, with the potential addition of Yunor, are poised to crack the top 10!  Bay12 represent!

Ok, I've added Yunor to Forgotten beasts instead of lemon10, so if he updates his rcfile he should be in the team.

Any other captains who have missing members could also draft in players from Team 4 if they wish...

Man, if we got Yunor on board and wins from me and Kamina (we both seem to be doing pretty well) then we're shooting for top 10!  Yay.

EBWOP: I won, yay!  Only a 3 rune because I want to go for at least a win before I start taking on the riskier branches.  Not sure what class to do next, but I can recommend MuSu as a slow, steady, safe build.

So, I realized something. If I ever want to win, I need to drop any preconceived notions about what's fair and/or cheap. For example, the only thing that should stop me from flooding a room with imps is not being in a spot where I'm able to put imps between me and the enemy, or a pure lack of MP. I should not be stopped because I'm worrying that flooding the room with imps is "cheap".
Title: Re: Dungeon Crawl 0.10 Tournament
Post by: Leafsnail on March 02, 2012, 07:53:15 pm
And if you go MuSu of Sif then the pure lack of MP is gone!  I was seriously spamming dragons everywhere towards the end.

...How can you possibly feel bad about using cheap tactics against Dungeon Crawl?  Haven't you suffered enough cheap deaths to make you lose all sympathy for the game :P?

The thing that is obstructing my chances to win the most is my desire to play something that's not a cookie cutter combo. Shame that all the cookie cutter combos are the easy ones :(

...I honestly don't know. What's even worse is it's something that should've been mercilessly beaten out of me a long time ago. I've been playing NetHack for years before I even found Crawl, and I have the same problem there.

Surely you can worry about making the game too easy for yourself with "easy" combos/ tactics after you've won.  I think the game is sufficiently challenging that you can not pull any punches.

WOOOOOO, got the 15 rune win (http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Kamina/morgue-Kamina-20120303-031733.txt). Adding on Yunor's points, this puts the Forgotten Beasts at 4773, in #9 and right behind #8 and #7! Great job, Beasts! :D

Seriously, after going through the extended lategame, I have lost all concept of 'cheap.' If crawl's going to throw tormenting, smiting, demon summoning absurdly high HP mummies with death curses at me in droves, then I'm going to abuse the hell out of everything I can, damnit! :P

Same here, and looking at "current games"... there aren't any, so I think the server is having problems.

I'm in the top three for number of "Individual Combo Standings"! Go me!

Hmmm, popping on ##crawl, it looks like a there was a problem with disk space on the server. Some relevant quotes:
Quote from: ##crawl
<heteroy> I crashed trying to go up stairs
<MarvinPA> it saves when you go upstairs so that would make sense
<MarvinPA> if it's a disk space issue

<fartbarter> optimistically we all just lose one level cleared of progress and it loads the backup from the last time you went down/up stairs before the disk space ran out. right?
<rast> fartbarter: thats what im hoping
<MarvinPA> if you didn't already die somehow then probably, yeah

<y2s82> so what should we do?  i tried logging back in and play but it wouldn't let me play; it just hangs with a blank page w/ a cursor...
<fartbarter> yeah everything's boned gotta wait for an admin
So hopefully people currently in games shouldn't lose too much progress. It might be a while before cao's back up, though, depending on when rax (the admin) can get around to fixing it...

Man, I hope that I don't lose all of this floor, I'd cleared out (at great annoyance, I might add) an entire giant ant nest... without poison resistance.

I'd rather not have to do that again.

Well, hell.

I did have to replay that giant ant nest, but this time it didn't go so well. Death of another promising character.

edit (many hours and another character later):

Well then, interesting note - even if they now only con grey to you, an entire room of orcish warriors can really ruin your day. Damn reach weapons.

So apart from hubris, what are the main threats for a MiBe in the mid game? I have a ring of see invis, axe skill of 26, an antimagical executioners axe, gourmand and trog loves me.

I really screwed up on Lair 8, and found myself 'slow' and 'exhausted', wielding a cursed battleaxe without the flame brand, fighting a Hydra (and lots of stupid green rats, meh) which gained a head everytime I hit it, and it didnt get me to half health before popping its clogs.

So hubris is definitely a danger :)

With CAO finally back up, I'm back in the game.

I've finally decided to stop trying to snipe low hanging combos and see if I can't get a win for this tournament, so I went with the tried-and-true: MiFi.

Now, hopefully I'm not going to jinx myself like I did with the insane artifact armor earlier, but I'm cautiously optimistic here:

XL 13 and I'm down to Lair 6 without any real heart-stopping moments so far.
Bought an artifact +4,+2 posion, rlightning scimitar, which has served me well.
Between my gloves of strength, a +4 STR ring, the ring "Kucerit" {EV+2 Str+3 Dex+1} and the amulet of Nen Pidu {Ward Str+3 Acc+4} I'm currently rocking a base 38 strength.

I'm using Okie, and that's going well thus far. His first gift to me was a -1 cap. Thanks dude, glad to see you care!

Now if I can just find myself a source of rPois, I can really start moving in the direction of some runes.

edit:

Oh! And my stumble onto the !Mutation gave me:
You possess an exceptional clarity of mind.
Your natural rate of healing is unusually fast.
You can spit poison.

I'm no longer drinking random potions, since I just know I'll hit !cure mutation if I do.

So CAO is back up, then? I keep on getting an error claiming that my save file is empty every time I try to play. Any idea who I should tell about this and/or how to fix it?

Try asking on ##crawl on Freenode - that's the official IRC channel for Crawl.Akrasiac.Org. If you ask there, hopefully there'll be someone around that can help you out.

edit: v - the -7 cloak of Dim Light {god gift, Dex-3 Int-3} thanks Okie, glad to see you're looking out for me!

Now my MiBe has two runes, and I just realised I have no idea how to proceed.
For instance, armour. I should wear heavy armour probably, but never had a successful non kobald melee fighter before, so I know next to nothing about armour.

I suspect my skills are a mess - I should have gone Axes, Armour, Fighting, Dodge, but instead I went Axes Fighting Armour Dodge.... I dunno, any one got any advice for a confused minotaur?

Now my MiBe has two runes, and I just realised I have no idea how to proceed.
For instance, armour. I should wear heavy armour probably, but never had a successful non kobald melee fighter before, so I know next to nothing about armour.

First off, grats on the two runes (you bastard, you've managed to pass me in score - now I really need to win, or I'll be stuck in last place on the team!)

Just going with plate is fine, assuming that you haven't found any good artifact armor. However, since you're just at a plain +1, there's almost certainly something better sitting around the dungeon (probably off of orcish knights) - do a search for 'plate', then gather up everything magical. Detect curses, then wear everything that's not cursed - you're almost bound to find at least a +2, if not something that will help your resists. If you don't find any decent plate, try splint or chain. It's worth giving up an armor point or two for resists.

Quote
I suspect my skills are a mess - I should have gone Axes, Armour, Fighting, Dodge, but instead I went Axes Fighting Armour Dodge.... I dunno, any one got any advice for a confused minotaur?

Your skills look good to me, although I'm surprised that you don't really have any kind of ranged attack skills going on... although that could just be me - I like to pepper my enemies with darts/arrrows/rocks/etc. before they get in range.

You went hand-to-hand with the Lernaean hydra? Gutsy.

Traditionally, the next step is the bottom of the Vaults, but your resists aren't really good enough for it (need rElec at least, and preferably some Life Protect.) You could try the Abyss, although that's a crapshot. You've got an amulet of resist corrosion, so you could go Slime.

Whatever you choose - good luck!

I'd explore the rest of Vaults down to 7, and maybe Crypt and the rest of Elf. Maybe also the dungeon down to 26 before taking on Vault 8. You do have rElec from that axe but it's a bit crappy otherwise - it's probably good enough to kill a storm dragon and hopefully get its hide which you can then enchant.

Killing the Lernaean Hydra was definitely my favourite moment of the tourney so far (although killing the Kraken with a headbutt comes close) - I had a flaming battleaxe, I read a scroll of teleport, I went berserk, and killed it the very turn before my teleport kicked it. So risky, but with a degree of caution, and in the end, very lucky indeed :)

The Vaults is going slowly - all those yaktaur packs keep making me have to rest up to regain some HP. I also had to teleport away from some vault containing ancient champions - never met those before, and it got a bit hairy. Crypt one is clear (apart from some cursed skull dudes).

The main dungeon is blocked by Mara on D23, and I still haven't actually seen anything of clarity, or indeed a scroll of enchant armour. Hmmmm.

I must admit, my collection of resist-axes is annoyingly poor, but never mind.

I think I will take my ring of see invis and my antimagical axe to Elf and see about finding some loot. Hopefully I won't get Abyssed to often (just survived first trip due to second distortion gift from Trog, guess I will be scroll IDing his gifts from now on)

EDIT: And I am dead. Mennas. Crap. I cant believe I underestimated Mennas, of all the bloody uniques in the game. Should have summoned some brothers, drunk a potion of speed, and run the fuck away. Idiot.

I've got a level 10 Spriggan Necromancer going. It might be a win. Maybe. I might at least be able to grab a rune off this, at least.

Also I have no experience playing past like level 14. The odds are against me.

I've got a level 15 black DrCj at the moment that has some promise.  I'm not particularly confident, since my experience with casters is minimal, but I'll keep my chin up.  I have the horrible feeling that death is around each corner at the moment.  There are some inevitible challenges that I'm really not sure my guy will be able to handle, like when Nessos jumped my ass in Swamp:1 and brought me within a few HP of death before the tele kicked in.  Maybe the snake pit will be a better choice right now.

Also, for my fellow recruits, I'm still confident that with some luck and persistence, we can get back into the top 30 by the end of the tourney.  My current run is probably going to be my last chance at another victory, so I'll do my part and play it out to the best of my ability.

BTW:  anyone else notice that the one guy "elliptic" has 10 wins?!?!?!  10 wins in a row?!?!?!?!  with 10 distinct species!?!?!? and 10 distinct classes?!?!?!?! and 10 distinct religions?!?!?!?  He died in his first 3 games and hasn't looked back since.  He's probably about to win again too.

I keep dying around XL 10 with a variety of characters.  The only guy time I stepped foot into the Lair I got destroyed by Erica shortly thereafter.

He's also been around forever, and I'm pretty sure he's won at least one previous tourney.

His best streak is 20, with no repetition in Class or species, I think. Yeah, he probably is an alien.

Got to a Volcano in the lair today.  Survived getting caught in a volcano blast only to die to some hogs.  Why hogs in a volcano?  Who knows.

Finally managed to get a rune in this tournament! The decaying rune is finally mine.

Got pretty darn lucky, in that Louise on Swamp 4 had an elemental shield, which combined with my weapon gave me +++ fire resist. Went down to Swamp 5 and found that it had generated a volcano ending. Needless to say, I never broke a sweat.

Almost ran into Roxanne on the way out... decided to turn right around and walk back a different way. I've tried to fight her before, and I think I'll pass this time.

Next up: Snake!

Edit: Snake down. Damn, constriction is a bitch. To the Vaults!

Edit^2: The silver rune is mine! Downwards and onwards!

I died because I was just jamming left to try and kill this rock beetle, not paying attention to my HP. "Oh, it's almost dead!" has claimed yet another victim.

Time to try a centaur, since I promised ##crawl I would play one after complaining about how much I disliked them.

Also apparently the vampires don't exist anymore? I can't find them on the clans page.

The vampires definitely still exist (http://seleniac.org/crawl/tourney/12a/clans/lerugray.html). You must have missed them somehow.

Huh. Are they not on the main clans page? I hit ctrl+f for my name and "vampire" and turned up nothing. Then I searched for Bay 12 and found all the other teams.

Bad news: I just got surrounded on Snake 3 by Margery and Boris without any rF.
Good news: Teleport kicked in just in time.

I really feel like my use of consumables is improving a lot this tourney - that's like, the third time I saved a PC by using a teleport scroll in the past few weeks, whereas previously I had lots of deaths where I didn't drink or read anything, and a few deaths waiting for tele to kick in... so definite improvements.

New Crawl motto: consumables, not consavables :)

So, I just found this:
the +15 plate armour of Claustrophobia {Str+4}

It's literally the most heavily enchanted thing I've ever found.

Base AC is now 43, base Str is 40.

I better not screw this up.

edit: Anyway, since I'm now at work and can't continue...

Funny thing about this current game: So, early in the dungeon I found sling bullets. A lot of them; call it 120 all told. I decided that this was a pretty obvious way for the game to tell me that slings were a good choice for the future of ranged combat for this character. So whenever I ran across an enchant weapons scroll, I'd hit this huge pile of ammo. I managed to get all the bullets up to +4, and I'm actually still using them, even now that I've just hit level 20 (although I'm down to about a dozen, since the rest have all mulched.)

So, the funny part: I still have not found a sling better than +0, and way down deep in the dungeon now, I'm rather unlikely to run across one either.

Now, don't get me wrong, hurling +4 bullets with 35-someodd strength behind them hurts things. A lot. But I can't believe I haven't found a single enchanted sling in all my travels - usually there's piles of the things, just scattered around the dungeon.

Man I wish I could play Crawl from here.

Speaking of screwing up:

Snake 4 has lava lakes, so after scouting out the edges, I leave all my scrolls on Snake 3, and set out lava worm hunting.

Of course, I bump into Mennas, and recalling how he killed off my last MiBe, I run for the stairs. Of course, he is too fast, and follows me up. I drink my only potion of speed (should have done this first), pillar dance around him, and in desperation (upstairs far away) I head back down to Snake 4.

So now I am on Snake 4, and my scrolls and Mennas are on Snake 3. Mennas may or may not still be near the staircase I left him at. I have more speed potions in a shop in Orc, but don't know whether I can get past him.

I could summon two brothers, go beserk, head up the stairs and pray he is still there, and that we can take him down, or ?? ???

You know who I really hate? Eustachio. I never realized quite how annoying the "flood the room with imps" trick was until he decided to use it on me.

I just backed into a hallway and let him surround himself with harmless imps while I ignored the one imp on the other side of me. He died quickly, half because he decided he didn't want to blink more than once.

Mennas is one of the toughest opponents outside of Hell and Pan; I don't think I've ever taken him down with a melee character. No matter what I do - berserk, haste, finesse, might, nothing gets past his shield.

Brothers in arms could work since I think shields get less effective against multiple attacks per turn, so someone has a chance of landing a hit.

Well sadly, killing Mennas was the highlight of that MiBe's life. I equipped my amulet of clarity, drank my agility potion, put on my tele ring just in case, summoned two BiA, went up the stairs, hit beserk, found Mennas a few steps away, and killed him with my two bros. So a level 17 MiBe *can* take down Mennas, if he can find time to get the summons in.

I then went and promptly died on Snake 5. I really hate the Salamander lava ending. Anyway, a naga mage teleported me and I ended up in the middle of a pack of mages and warriors, and my own teleport didnt kick in in time. Actually, come to think of it, why the hell didn't I blink instead? Too late now :(.

I've never seen the salamander ending of Snake... sounds nasty. In my current game I came across a Crypt ending I've never seen before: the one with dead trees and a graveyard surrounding a creepy castle type thing with deep dwarves, ghouls and a profane servitor.

Don't forget you can cancel an unwanted teleport by using one of your own before it kicks in.

And there we go - victory!

I went with 4 runes. My character was probably strong enough that I could've tried for more runes, but in the end I decided to play it safe, since I really would not like to lose my character after all this.

At a mere 68,348 turns, it's the fastest ascent in our clan, although sadly not quite fast enough to make it on the scoreboard (last place there is 64,917)

To be honest, I've been a bit burned out on crawl so I haven't been playing the last few days, but I've decided to get back into it. I've only got a laptop available right now, so let's see if I can get used to vi keys.

Congrats on the victory!!!

On my side, I had the best run of my life on an Orc Priest. I had a good five or six loyal, powerful orc allies wandering around, one of which whom could summon imps/demons and raise the dead. So, obviously, I start thinking I can pull this off.

I then immediately fall down a shaft. While trying to get back to my allies, I fell down another shaft. Right into a room full of baddies, up to and including a four-headed hydra. I managed to teleport away enough to find the labyrinth on the level and clear it out, but I never came close to finding my allies again. I eventually ran into the hydra again, after making it up a level and promptly finding a shaft to drop me right back to the hydra, and died after getting surrounded by trolls, the hydra, and everything else the game could throw at me. :(

Yeah, I noticed that we're beating the Recruits now. Go Vampires!!

On another note, I forgive you, game. I started another Orc Priest. I opened one of those rooms that're completely full of enemies.

It was full of orcs. My current army, after I cleared out the room (and almost died, because I got cocky -_-;;)
1 Orc Knight
5 Orc Warriors
1 Orc Priest
1 Orc Wizard
14 Orcs

EDIT:

...And apparently my thought process was "This is going to well. I need to fix that." As I mindlessly chase after a fleeing enemy, straight into a horde of skeletal warriors and yaks. Who then obliterate half my army and cause me to start digging through my potions so I don't die. First potion I drink is a potion of confusion, I'm surrounded by my army and accidentally attack an orc... I hit... and immediately enter penance. I died very quickly after that.

Won once more, this time with an OpIE of Vehumet. Holy shit, the storms are good. Never had a decent character that could cast one before.

Interestingly enough, this win marks the point where half my wins have been in this tourney. I must have become a lot better recently or something, jeez.

Also, half our wins are mine once more. Muahahahahaha. :P

Edit: Oh, and congrats to AlStar! Good job!

Wow, congrats Kamina and AlStar. Looks like my ability time-wise to contribute to the tourney is almost over, so no miracle win for the last player in the Forgotten Beasts, sorry. Still, I said at the start I would be happy to get a rune this tourney, and indeed I have, so its not all bad.

Harold can put out quite a bit of damage, as it turns out.

In other news, demonic guardian is pretty awesome.  My sun demon ripped Gastronok a new one.  The first level was a bit annoying as it popped out an imp whenever something remotely threatening popped out, but level two waited until there was a serious threat.  It's nice to have allies against uniques and such.

I seem to be on a kick of demonspawn casters- even when they make me monstrous.

I wanted to go Chei (DS lends itself to UC, which I feel is a good hybrid candidate), but of all the altars, I can't find Chei!  I've searched all of D2-9 and the temple, and there isn't one.  That must mean I missed one behind a secret door somewhere- ugh.

Chie makes you slow, and being slow sucks. Also, why do you want to go chei? The stats bonuses don't really help you at all.

Because I've always wanted to get a good Chei character going.

Chei transmuter used to be pretty cool - his int boosts made all the forms easy to cast earlier, the str/dex boost put your blade hands damage through the roof (8 + str/3 + dex/3 + UC - so a 20 base damage boost) and you could escape with Spider Form (which melded your ponderous gear and boosted your speed).  Now, though, Chei slows you in spider form, so you'd have pretty much no escape options until you find blink...

In other news, 27 UC on my MiMo.  My current vanguard are 2 Profane Servitors (who are fucking ace... I think Umbra might give you a stealth boost although the learndb doesn't suggest this), a Bone Dragon and some other random gifted undead.  Unfortunately I lost my cool enslaved unique, so I'm currently on the lookout for a new one.

I've discovered Tengu Fire Elementalists. They're great - tons of damage, conjure flame gives you decent utility, what could go wrong?

I can.

First one gets to like level 11, where I'm down in the lair. I go "Ha, sticky flame should make short work of this spiny toad!" I swear that toad was like at 1 HP when it killed me.

Second one gets to level 9 and finds a five-headed hydra on D:7 for some reason. I get scared and run down a level, but muster the courage to go back. My reasoning is that I could get some good damage off if I get a good distance between myself and the hydra, so I turn a corner and WELL WHAT DO YOU KNOW, IT'S RIGHT THERE AND TWO THIRDS OF MY HEALTH IS GONE.

I kite it around a toadstool and read a random scroll, which turns out to be a scroll of fear. Saved! The stairway is like two steps away! "But wait a second, there's a helpless hydra over there that's just begging to get hit by sticky flame..." Turns out the fear on those scrolls doesn't last very long.

I've gotten into the habit of running, screaming, from Sigmund if I see him on one of the early dungeon levels. I'm pretty sure this is a reasonable response.

Sigmund on D2 and a centaur with arrows of dispersal on D3. Game...

I'm pretty sure, from a game design standpoint, that the whole point of Sigmund is to teach people early on that in Crawl, running screaming from dangerous monsters is often the best play. So yeah, good job :)

/and of course, to kill you a lot

Been trying to win Ke/Te fire elementalists pretty much for as long as I've been playing Crawl, and not managed it yet. Still working on it though.

IMO, Tengu are one of the hardest species to win with, and others seem to agree, as they're always among the species with the fewest wins in tournaments.

I think I have one more serious run at it left in me, and I'm trying to decide what to play.  I think I've given most builds except a transmuter a try, so perhaps one of those...

I've actually done fairly well for myself this tourney- my percentage of games which are "serious" [as defined as I make it to the Lair] is way above my usual run of D3 splats.

Just thought that I'd mention, in case it hadn't been noticed, but the Forgotten Beasts are currently #3 on the Clan Combo Standings. I, personally, am at #2 in the individual standings, although since I'm only above #3 by 1 combo, I wouldn't be surprised to see me fall from this lofty hight.

Anyway, we're only 10 combos behind #2. If you've got some extra time, check out the bottom of this list: http://seleniac.org/crawl/tourney/12a/combo-scoreboard.html (http://seleniac.org/crawl/tourney/12a/combo-scoreboard.html) and play one of the combos. Get up to level 5ish, and it's yours.

Just don't steal the couple of low ones that belong to me :p

edit:

Hey, just noticed something else:
37 1538 Bay 12 Vampires lerugray (captain), Porter, Xgamer4, ajikeshi, penguin
38 1537 Bay 12 Recruits Un67 (captain), Frumple3, KarlitoH, StToaster, flord,

Vampires and Recruits are off each other by 1 point.

Been trying to win Ke/Te fire elementalists pretty much for as long as I've been playing Crawl, and not managed it yet. Still working on it though.

I said I was still working on it - and I finally did it (http://crawl.develz.org/morgues/0.10/Train/morgue-Train-20120310-110748.txt)

It would have been nice to go for more runes, but I felt Slime would have been too dangerous without rCorr, I didn't want to get stuck in Pan or Abyss and unable to find the exit before the end of the tournament, and Hell is hell (and so is Tomb.) Also, I could easily have died.

So I guess that's my last significant game of the tournament, though I might still try to grab some of the combo high scores for the lowest-ranked combos.

Well just won another character.  Not really the optimum god or combo for points, but eh... a fair few points from runes and orb.  Minotaurs with 27 UC are just godly.

I'm now gonna go sniping for combos.  DESt (of Kiku, aka a necromancer), you're mine.

Blehbleh. S'over in five hours, innit? S'not enough time for me to do much, meh, and don't really feel like playing anyway.

Didn't think I'd get around to playing much, but didn't think I'd play so little, either. That save-file buggery really threw me off :-\

Anyway, yeah. Worst personal showing of the tourneys so far. Probably sit the next one out unless I'm actually bitten by the crawl bug when it rolls around.

Well, as it turned out, a high score attempt turned into a legit game.  I played a HoAs as if it were a HoFi.  It honestly should've been a win, but I had to race the damn clock to try to get the game in in time, so I got mangled, again, in Vaults:8.  The encounter was definitely manageable, but I'm just really no good at playing quickly.  Oh well.

Good tourney for me.  My first win, 4 total chars with runes.  Good times had for sure.  Vampires, you've got an hour and a half to overtake us.  Good luck!!

...And time!

Wow, really touch and go at the end there - I kept falling from 3rd place in total species-class combos to 4th. Ended up tied for 3rd with 15 combos (so 3 behind 2nd, or 32 behind first.) Helped keep the Beasts up in 3rd place for clans too at 26 combos (behind 47 and 40 for 1st and 2nd place.)

The Beasts ended up in 11th place by 103 points, just barely missing out on the top 10.

Good work everyone!

I nearly managed to turn a Minotaur Conjurer into an actual character... as a spellcaster! After I found a ring of wizardry then the +1 robe of Royalty {rPois rF+ Str+1 SInv} on level 6 of the dungeon, I figured why not? Was actually doing pretty well with it, had Vehumet helping my casting, and was throwing around Mystic Blasts and Lightning Bolts.

Got to the bottom of swamp, but ran into one-too-many dragons in the rune vault.

was it just me, or were there a hell of a lot more people playing than in past tournaments?

I didn't play last time, but I observed, and I think there were way fewer people participating last time.  This time there were 1308 registered players.

Regardless of our finish, I had a good time.  Also, congrats to the Beasts on a solid performance.  I feel like unless you study this game fanatically, it's quite hard to get anywhere near the top few teams.

Also, I have no clue how those people play so fast.  I had a spellcaster that spent about 19 hours just to get to Vaults:8!!

Now that the tourney's over, I don't think I'll have it in me to play much for a while.  It's not the same when you can't see your points go up as you progress, or get shiny banners for certain achievements, lol.  Maybe I'll pick it up again once .11 or .12 is out and a new tourney begins :D.

I've had aspirations of making a screenshot + narrative chronicle of the adventures of a HoFi, gone on a mecca to pledge allegiance to Beogh, but I think I'll wait at least until a new tournament is on the horizon to sink that deep into nerd-dom.  Real life awaits.

tldr; good times.  see you next tourney.
