So...back before the new year, I used to do these semi-regular Livestreams of Asian movies (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91323.0). Had a lot of fun before attendance died down to where it was pretty much just scriver and me. College exams and whatnot were partly to blame, as was the ever-shifting schedule and midweek showings. Now that I could reliably stay up late on Friday nights, I'm keen on restarting them if there's interest. So I'm dropping this thread to see if there's interest. For reference of the kind of movies I've shown, so far we've screened:
The Good, The Bad and the Weird
Shaolin Soccer
Iron Monkey
Mr. Vampire
Chinese Ghost Story
Green Snake
Still on my slate to show:
Drunken Master (Jui kuen)
Once Upon a Time in China
Hero (Ying xiong)
Rashomon
Duel to the Death (Xian si jue)
Shinobi: Heart Under Blade
Painted Skin (Hua pi zhi: Yin yang fa wang)
Wild Zero
SARS Wars (Khun krabii hiiroh)
Touch of Zen
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu can long) *or* House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu) -- can't decide
Not One Less (Yi ge dou bu neng shao)
Beijing Bicycle (Shiqi sui de dan che)
I try to pair them up thematically and do double-features, but 4 hours or so is a lot of time to invest. I'll have to figure out a better format that doesn't zombify people by the end of it.
EDIT: Oh, and here's the link to my stream when it's up. (For one thing, people can go check out previous broadcasts in the library):

Posting to rewatch.
These streams were awesome.
-
I'm ashamed that I've only ever seen Shaolin Soccer in that list.
Have you considered God of Cookery Redking? It's like Shaolin Soccer, but with professional chefs instead of soccer players. Also by Stephen Chow.
-
Hero (assuming it's the one I'm thinking of), House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon are all very good. I haven't seen or heard of any of the rest.
-
Suggestion: The Last Dragon
-
Count me in. I watch many films, but Asian films not so much.
Bruce Lee ones are awesome.
-
Posting to watch (hurr durr pun funny)
Good, Bad and Weird was definitely one of the best movies I saw last year, I keep forgetting I'm supposed to show it to everyone I know.
Also, for suggestions, how about that one about that one emperess, "something golden flower something"? I can't remember too much of it, but it feels like I thought it was a good one.

Oh I have a good one actually. It's only kind of asian. It's based on an american missionary in China.
The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. Is good!
.. and Tora Tora Tora, again only semi asian.

...That is so the name and synopsis of a porno.

Y'know, I *should* try to nab that one. I've had some friends tell me it was hilarious, but I've never actually seen it myself.

No. That is just....no.

No Ip Man? D:
That's another one I need to add. Korean cinema tends to be a big blind spot for me. I'm trying to educate myself, because I was so taken by Kang-ho Song's performance (the guy who's my current avatar) that I started digging and found that he has a fairly long and acclaimed career in Korean film, and that Korean film in general is freakin' gritty as hell. There are very few happy endings in these movies, and large body counts.
I've also been impressed by the cinematography of Korean film in general. It compares favorably with the high-budget productions from Japan, Taiwan and the PRC, with less WTFJAPAN? than Japan, and less grandiosity than the mainland Chinese epics.
I think the other reason I tend to unconsciously sideline Korean films is that Korea in general is a blind spot for me. Unlike China and Japan, I don't know any of the language, and just a bare gloss of its history. :-[
-
Departures is easily my favorite Asian film, but I don't know if it's in your tastes.

Huh. Had not heard of it, but after reading the synopsis, it certainly sounds worth a screening. There's an HK film that I think it would pair beautifully with called Happy Birthday.
-
I also think you should look into Old Boy, a korean flick about a man that's kidnapped and imprisoned in a room for 15 years, where he teaches himself martial arts through shadow boxing. He's released one day for seemingly no reason, and he flies into a quest for vengeance against whomever did that to him.
One of the best movies I'd ever seen.

Yup, I'm familiar with that one. Oldboy's director, Park Chan-wook, also did a lot of the gritty suspense flicks that really kicked Kang-ho Song's career into high gear (like Thirst, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Joint Security Area). He also directed a romantic comedy called (in the English translation) I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK. Which I need to see just for the title alone. xD
-
I loved his role in Memories of Murder.
-
Okay, compiled a list of Korean movies for me to procure, so I'll be working on that the next couple of weeks.
I thought it might be fun to have an encore showing of The Good, The Bad and the Weird tonight, partly to see if there's interest and partly to test out the new router (upgraded over the holidays, my DL speeds are 3x higher now, so I'm betting I could stream higher quality without hiccups now). And because it's such a fun movie that it bears repeated viewing.
Scheduled showtime is 10pm EST (3am GMT). Sorry to screw the Europeans over on this one :(
Link is on the OP now.

I am Interest! Perhaps I might not be Awake, sadly. We shall see.

I really wish Uni classes were nocturnal. Not only would I not miss all these things, but also I'd actually be able to sleep :V

It's Saturday tomorrow, you can sleep in.

Bah, 3am is such a sucky time D:
I'll probably still be up then anyway though :P

Not the point, I just can't sleep in the night.

Stream is live, if anyone's interested. Should be much better quality than before.

I must have been the only viewer. :|

I must have been the only viewer. :|
Huh....I never actually saw any viewers. Doesn't matter, the stream had no sound. Because...y'know, no *people* to tell me there was no sound. >:( ::)
Ah well. At least the video looks waaaaay better. Once I get the sound issue worked out, I'll probably restream everything I showed last fall, just to get higher quality archives online.
-
I missed the stream? D:
Eff GMT +8; I always miss the good parts on the other side of the world.
-
I was gonna but suddenly it was half 2 and I was really damn tired.
-
Set my alarm to an hour before it started, but when I got up I was still so tired it was just plain not worth it.
-
Shit, I've forgotten to post2watch this thread!
Is TONIGHT tonight or some other night?
-
It was last night.
-
I just realized I needed to post to watch here.
Looks like I just did.
-
It's too early for me to join in, if you did double features I'd be able to make it to the second one each week.
-
Hmm....maybe what I should do is have folks that are interested post their timezone so I can figure out when the most reasonable time would be for the majority. If it turns out that most of the people who want to watch are Euros, then I could conceivably try to get started earlier so that it'd be a reasonable time of night over there. Or a bit later and you all could have Saturday Morning Kung-Fu.

Ironically, I watched with no sound because I was doing listening homework at the same time and I knew I wouldn't understand Korean anyway ;P
Good to finally know where your avatar is from by the way ;)

Hah....true, hadn't thought of that. But then you missed the great soundtrack (straight epic western stuff early on, then Ennio Morricone meets Outkast towards the end). Plus the vocal inflection on some of the lines, like Tae-goo's indignation when he's talking to Park Do-Won, or how he pitches his voice up when he's speaking Chinese and pretending to be someone else. It's hilarious.

I'm in GMT, and on Friday, i'm normally available between noon - 5 pm, then 10pm-2am which in your timezone is 2pm - 7pm and midnight - 4 am
-
GMT, baby.
-
GMT++
-
I'm on Mountain Time, which is a full seven hours before GMT. ::)
-
GMT -6 fer me.
-
I just learned GMT doesn't stand for general mountain time for the rest of the world, only in america?
by GMT i meant general mountain time, and not Greenwich Mean Time which is the official meaning of GMT
so I guess I'm UTC, or Mountain Time, GMT-7 {(GMT) minus 7 hrs.}
one hour ahead of Pacific Time and one hour behind Central Time, two behind eastern.

-
or idk, maybe it doesn't and I'm just stupid?
I never payed much attention to time zones before. They're stupid.
-
GMT's Greenwich Meridian Time, AKA, the one everything else is measured from.
-
I thought it was Greenwich Mean Time?
-
Wikipedia agrees with you. I learned something today, and I haven't even gone to uni yet. :D
-
Yeah, the Greenwich Meridian is the line upon which GMT is measured.
GMT here as well.
-
So that's 3 GMTs, 1 CET (GMT +2 or 3?), 1 Mountain Time and 1 Central Time. And I'm in Eastern (GMT-5).
Obviously the solution here is to reshape Earth as a toroidal ringworld so that we are all on the same timezone. That, or I could do later broadcasts (so that the Europeans get in the morning and the Americans get it late but not crazy late). Downside is, it'll be crazy late for me.
Might take to doing the double-feature again, so Americans can grab the early one and Europeans can watch the later one.
Okay, I will NOT be doing one this Friday night, because my son's 2nd birthday party is on Saturday and I need to actually get sleep beforehand. But the weekend after that looks like a winner. SO....I present the following double-feature options, and I'll put a poll up on the OP for people to vote between now and then:
Night of a Million Zillion Ninjas (ninja movies)
Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (Japan, 2005)
Duel to the Death (Hong Kong, 1983)
One Story, Three Storytellers (multiple POV/untrustworthy narrators)
Rashomon (Japan, 1950)
Hero (China, 2002)
Will The Real Wong Fei Hung Please Stand Up? (two very different takes on the legendary Wong Fei Hung)
Drunken Master (Hong Kong, 1978)
Once Upon A Time In China (Hong Kong, 1991)
Dangerous Liasons (supernatural love stories not involving sparkly vampires)
Green Snake (Hong Kong, 1993)
Painted Skin (Hong Kong/China, 2008)
Kung Fu Sutra: Wuxia as Religious Parable (epic wuxia films with Buddhist themes)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (China/Hong Kong/Taiwan/US, 2000)
Touch of Zen (Taiwan, 1971)
-
CET'S GMT+1/2 depending on DST.
Also throwing in a vote for Rashomon for storytelling shenanigans.

Athens/Jerusalem/Tallinn/wherever else time. I'm almost always free on any time from 5-20 on weekdays, any time on a Saturday, Sundays tend to randomly flux.

I guess I'll also throw a vote here, just to cement this.
-
Okay, so it's looking like Rashomon and Hero will be on the slate for Friday night. Tentative start time will be 11pm EST (0400 Saturday morning GMT):
11pm-12:30am: Rashomon
12:30-12:40: Intermission
12:40-2am: Hero
It helps that both of these movies are pretty short (88min. for Rashomon, 99min. for Hero). This should make for not-too-late viewing for Americans (especially West Coasters) and not-too-horribly-early viewing for Europeans (especially for Hero)...it's like Saturday morning cartoons only with swords and blood! ;D
Things to note:
Both movies utilize a very similar narrative structure: Most of the "present-day" is simple dialogue scenes connecting seperate "flashbacks" which are the same story told from different POVs. (Zhang Yimou has acknowledged Rashomon as an influence in writing and directing Hero).
One big contrast/comparison is the use of lighting. Kurosawa deliberately shot Rashomon in black and white, to go along with his theme of the truth of the story lying somewhere in a "grey area" in between the three tellings. Hero, by contrast, is shot in vivid color, with each character being essentially color-coded (green for Long Sky, red for Flying Snow, black for the Qin army and King, etc.)
Rashomon was filmed on an extremely tight budget, and as a result it's a minimalist film. There are only 3 settings in the entire film: the city gate (from whence the film takes its name), the temple courtyard and the woods, and only 8 characters. Hero, on the other hand, had one of the largest budgets of a mainland Chinese film ever at that point (about 250 million yuan) and a cast and crew of hundreds, with lush location shots and meticulously constructed sets.
-
11pm EST is 3am GMT, just so you know. We haven't changed to daylight savings yet.
-
Get with the program, Britain! We switched to DST this past weekend. :P
Okay, so the Euro crowd will most likely not be up and around for Rashomon. I really can't push it any further forward, because I actually do have to get up and function somewhat the next day.
-
Unless we stay up, which I plan to. I can sleep through Saturday. Also, we change to GMT on the 25th.
-
The US used to change on the last weekend of March too, then a few years ago Congress decided that if the point of DST is efficiency, we should make it start two weeks earlier (and last two weeks longer) for MOAR EFFICIENCY! ::)
-
going to a party on friday so I won't be able to make it :(
-
Bumping to remind people. Rashomon @ 11pm Eastern Standard Time, Hero @ 12:40am EST.
-
What's the ETA on that?
-
Cool. I'm in.
-
What's the ETA on that?
Uhh....about 12 hours from now?
-
13.
I checked. Unless this script I used is a load of bull. Wouldn't surprise me.
-
10 hours 35ish from now.

-
I knew it.
-
Having some audio difficulties, but Rashomon is a go....come join us!
http://www.livestream.com/redkingsactiontheater/ (http://www.livestream.com/redkingsactiontheater/)
-
So, a good time was had by all, despite audio problems and Livestream deciding to herp the derp multiple times over the last 20 minutes or so of Hero (which is why it isn't in the online library...grrr).
Both movies were kind of depressing at the end though, so I decided to make up for that by introducing a new pairing and a new poll:
Mo lei tau: the comedies of Stephen Chow
God of Cookery
Kung-Fu Hustle
EDIT: Crap. Because I put an end date on the poll, it's not letting me allow voting again. Anybody know how to fix that or delete the poll and add a new one?
