Its a particularly well armed Scout, freeform. The owning civ don't believe in halfassing protection, even for scouts. Thats why the generator froze by the time it got here instead of being just mostly cold and almost usuable more quickly.

Why no optics? We need a general image of what's outside. Who knows what's happening right now. Besides, optics are passive compared to radar and stuff.

Yes, but next turn the generator output should increase. Also, -optics-, not the IR/UV/X-ray... which probably take up more power.

I think it's more important that we make sure there's not a mission directive for us first. The only ways to do that I can see are checking our hard drive and searching for a network.

Cloaked Rover Successfully past lifeform designated 'Bear Calvary'. Continuing to Sector 0,2. Forest continues still. Dead organism found.
Qualities: Dead. Large. Nonbearlike.
Probable cause of death: Larger clawed entity.
Notes: Quite a mess. Can not tell what kind of animal it was previously, it has been quite thouroughly clawed into unrecognizable meaty chunks, though still seems to be in one piece. Too big to contain inside rover unit for Orbiter analysis.
Tracks coming from the north heading south also found, size approximately the same as Bear Calvary mount foot.

Well, if it doesn't look like the previous life form, then its nonbearlike. The tracks come from the north and head south.

Following the tracks north, the cloaked rover finds more forest, more plants, and a pond. The pond is water. Since there isn't a more interesting target in this area, the rover collects some plants to be analyzed for use later by Orbiter. It then receives a signal from orbit notifying the rover that the radio signal appears to be some sectors to the northwest. The tracks continue eastwards, though.

Title: Re: You are a Satellite
Post by: Aklyon on April 04, 2012, 02:39:42 pm
Rover Mk12 raw materials needed:
Power source.
Sturdy, nonflammable materials to withstand entry, or a large amount of excess material to construct 'drop pod'.
Conductive materials.
Waterproofing materials.

Where do you propose we get those from? Most of this area is forest. theres a sea to the east, but the base rover is not waterproof.

Also, you guys can post more than one region of movement at a time, you know. Like move x in y direction, or move towards x. Or a destination co-ords.

Tree bark collected.
Incineration test: Fairly long-lasting. Not the best, but suitable for emergency power.
Electrical Test: Nonconductive.
Liquid test: Seems to be at least partially waterproof.
Strength test: Not suitable for Rover construction.

Rover moving in specified direction.

Sector -1, 4:
Conductive mineral outcropping found. Inefficient, but conductive. Sample collected.
Spotted another dead animal, gunshot wound through multiple locations.
Probable cause of death: Bear Calvary.

Sector -2, 5:
Group of 5 Bear Calvary sighted enroute, all armed as described previously. Area ignored in favor of evasion.

Sector -2, 4:
Fallen trees. Saw attachment not strong enough to completely shear through trunk, Note added for upgrade to saw. Bear Group Alpha moving in an eastern direction.

Sector -3, 5:
Forest continues, little new to note. Sky darkening. Cloak system still active, though due to power constraints during dark hours may need to be turned off. Rover beginning construction of hole in ground as precaution.

We don't know what we could use for propellent, though. All that the previous rover had was dire emergency power-giving tree bark, and conductive rocks.

And the landing site of the previous rover is also probably still partially on fire.

Oh, okay, I just figured that you could use almost any mass for propellant...

We can use most any mass, we just don't have anything useful up here but the asteroids and little idea where something could be down there. Though actual fuel-like material is the most optimal, otherwise we have to spend extra power on converting it through the manufactorum.

[See previous posts for command history, this is a big enough list as-is]

>Calculate elements required to make asteroid harvesting, return, and sustained orbit fall within accepted safety margins.
20% more fuel for minimal safety margins is the primary element required.
>Calculate time until generator functioning at full standard capacity.
Generator is running at full power, full capacity is reached upon having 100% of main systems active. See Status below.
>Review likely asteroid harvest.
Metals, rocky material, other usable elements.
>Review rover capabilities.

The red areas are quite a bit away from 4,-4. I'd thought it was easier to split the maps into two then have a giant map with only a corner connecting the two, since its confuing enough to make sense of it once the color tags start jumbling up the map in the text box.

Title: Re: You are a Satellite
Post by: Aklyon on April 09, 2012, 11:32:39 pm
Materials Scan of Sector 4,-4:
Easily accessable: rock, dirt, coppery mineral.
Farther down: Harder minerals, and an unknown radar-absorbing substance. Metals either elsewhere or below the substance. Minerals likely suitable for ground construction, unknown if light enough for mobile use. Also suitable for Cannon cartridge manufacturing with minimal transmution.

Sector 4,-5:
Conductive rock sample re-collected.
Small live creature found:
Qualities: Small. Likely nonthreatening. Burrower.
Notes: What is it surviving off of? Not much in the way of flora in this region.
Stunned. Collected for possible trade usage, or for SCIENCE!
Materials scan: See Previous

Sector 3,-5:
Large, pointed, minimally eroded rock formation. Signs of unusually common scorching and/or lightning strikes upon it. No signs of storm-related marks or destruction elsewhere in entire sector. Scan indicates resemblance but not matching link to conductive rock sample. area otherwise of no new interest.
Materials scan: Minimal compared to previous, with exception to the lightning-attractor mineral formation extending quite a fair bit down.

The orbiter can't scan precisely what the rover hasn't seen with that orbital uplink addon active, its too focused on the rover's potential commands and status. You need to turn that off first to regain orbital flexibility (you can reboot it later.).

Title: Re: You are a Satellite
Post by: Aklyon on April 12, 2012, 10:00:34 am
That would only add three more blocks to the map. (8, 1 being the farthest out new tile) The rover can detect 2 tiles out from itself in any direction, if you haven't noticed already. Unless you're just trying to green out more of the map, which it probably will do. Not much happening in the mountains.

Also, a note: the orbiter only scans for what you ask it to. There still could be other dangers in the scanned but green designated areas.

Its not the stealth thats the problem, its that you guys keep running into hostile territory with a vehicle designed to explore and protect itself against unarmed animals and enviromental, non-MAGMA hazards, not to fight. It got hit with an arrow and lost a peice, for pete's sake. (Picked a random bit to get hit, and a d6 for how hard it hit, it hit pretty hard.)

Can we move while stealthed? I think it would be a good idea to get away, and not get shot with more arrows.

Moving while stealthed causes that displacement problem with the stuff behind you that causes the shootings in the first place. You'd either need to move at a snails pace, or position that arrow so it looks like it landed behind you and wait till the bears are asleep.

Its about noon right now on Planet.

We should just stay stealthed and not move till night, at night go west 2 sectors, away from the village.

Of course, if the rover's stealth is compromised by someone walking into it, then they should be collected for study...

AAArrrrrghh. What we need to do is flee up into the mountains, where they won't bother us, and build a manufacturing center. Then we can repair the orbital uplink and start doing all sorts of stuff.
Title: Re: You are a Satellite

Or you could retrieve the rover and blast the village. Then you could both be in the mountains after fixing the rover and have less bears nearby.

I'm surprised this isn't getting more attention. Seems good so far.

Anyways immediate pickup and repairs. Then scan for mineral deposits if possible.

Pickup where, though? its at 7,-4 right now, the Satellite just needs a precise address to retrieve it from.

Go to 6,-4, Figure out what kind of minerals they are, and if they can be used for something.
Unless system memory recalls as the copper-like mineral.

Rover moving to 6,-4.
BEFRIEND Cannon online, clearing target queue.
Mineral Details:
Tough. Metallic. Possibly useful for rover construction. Mining mineral, naming it 'Metallic #1' for lack of other defining characteristics.

Why is the purple sector BEFRIENDED? Did we fire our cannon at it or is our cannon just locked onto it?
Title: Re: You are a Satellite
Post by: Aklyon on April 15, 2012, 03:56:38 pm
Its locked on to it, and since we have two of the cannons, it could clear both out of the queue at once. Hasn't fired yet though. It has its own color so a)you guys can find where its aiming easier and b)so I can keep track of where its fired.

I'm hoping it's called BEFRIEND ironically.

If you couldn't tell from the link I had while describing it before, I'm using the alternate (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Befriend&defid=4624853) definition of it. (otherwise I wouldn't need the brown color ;))

Cannons Fired. Awaiting Rover description of impact site.

Bears have accounted for entirely too much property damage...

Design rover capable of withstanding and observing bears for extended periods of time.

No doubt we have inflicted a great deal of mental trauma, and there was that little incident with destroying the remains of our first rover, and just now with the big boom, well, okay, but the bears have destroyed one rover and damaged another, that is a whole lot more than anything else on that planet and we need to conduct an explicit study into them. This would seem to require an armoured rover with stealth capabilities but less need for geological analysis or high-speed movement, as their settlements have thus-far been static... Probably try to arrange for a burst movement, perhaps chemical rockets, to evade determined assault should stealth prove ineffective...
Title: Re: You are a Satellite
Post by: Aklyon on April 16, 2012, 01:23:05 pm
You don't need a rover then, you need a stealthed, well-armored observer. Floating or ground-based?

Floating would take more effort to cloak, but would have much simpler movement and could just fly to the orbiter later. The ground one would be a stealth mini-tank with unstealthy burst rockets, but needing a stable, specialized comm link with the orbiter to ensure the same kind of data, since it would reveal its location if we needed to retrieve the bulky thing. Both would have an overcharged version of the rover's stun weapons, suitable enough to either knock out the bears or injure them enough to have more or less the same result, though the floater would have minor recoil problems.
Also, we can use the extra space freed by not having multiscanners for more dakka stealth systems.

I vote for the flying one. We could just hover over the settlement.

Lets have our current rover begin collecting materials for rover construction where its sitting right now.

I'd like to find a safe-looking place to build a factory. But probably wait until we have a few rovers first...

Flying one works for me...

Do we have blueprints for a rover designed for Defense/offence?
That would make sense for defending a production facility.
Title: Re: You are a Satellite
Post by: RAM on April 17, 2012, 02:51:25 am
The new batch of rovers sound as though several of them could defend a remote site and capture any known entities that locate it. They would not fare well against a large force, but there should be time enough to study any threats before they locate our facility...

You got pretty much three kinds of rover the Satellite can make: The rover, the observer, and the warbot. The last one we can only make one of with out ground based manufacturing.
Title: Re: You are a Satellite
Post by: Immortal on April 17, 2012, 09:15:19 am
Alright, so build and deploy the observer. Lets send it to (7,-4) then go west to check bear village.
Current rover collects rover materials.

You retrieve the rover, send it back to continue mining, and construct an Observer.
Observer Report of Bear village: A rather sizable crater. It then floats back to Orbiter and is relaunched closer to the musket village, but very slowly approaches.

When we have enough for a second rover, build it, and send it to the same location as the other rover. Keep both mining till nothing is left.
That observer can keep approaching slowly. Shouldn't need to get to close to see if there is a crater.

The other village still is there, just not the house near the rover.

The house near rover #1 that doesn't exist anymore?
Send rover to 8,-4 and search for minerals that came to meet us when they were befriended.

^ That is cleared. The observer robot is over at (-3,4).
Alright pull the observer away and have it scout south.
Keep mining.

The original rover #1, not the current one farther south.
