Title: farm help
Post by: Clouded_scythe on May 24, 2008, 05:12:00 pm
I have made a couple of fortresses but none of them have survived the first winter very well many dwarves starving going insane.....so and so and so but i tried once digging out all the standing water around a new one and it did ok but was slaugtered the second year by golbins but i digress i found that farming to my stupid amazment could actually help me out... now i read the wikis and all the advice i could and would find now i would like some help. i dug a channel from my river to the inide area where the second fully hooked up flood gate(flush with the wall but still completely undground) with a second one also hooked to the same lever in an ajacent room. now i have water ready to flow through the gates and into the room which is sealed with tightly locked and forbidden doors (how do the pets know not to go throught forbidden doors) and i have a dwarf flip the switch and then.....nothing
it just turns into normal tiles nothing happens sept wasted time and wasted resources
please help me

Could you please rephrase what you have done and what has happened? Did the water even flow into the room? I don't understand what you are saying...

Flood water doesn't flow out of channels, in my experience. Your water needs to be on the same z-level as the room, or above it.

So this won't work:

code:

Side view:

~~~~~~|''''''
~~~~~~|

~ = Water
' = Floor

...because the body (not the surface) of the water is 1 z-level lower than the floor of the room to be flooded.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but it'd be a lot easier for people to understand what you're saying and help you if you used capital letters and punctuation and maybe broke your post up into a couple of paragraphs. Right now it just reads like one long run-on sentence and it's kind of hard to follow.

Loo[k] at the tiles. It might be that the mined out rocks block view from the water.
