Title: Bins that get "stuck" at trade depots?
Post by: GameHat on August 02, 2007, 09:27:00 pm
Anyone else routinely get a number of bins that get brought to depot, but never get hauled back once the traders leave?

In my current game, I have about 8 that just sit at the depot year round.  All othe bins are quickly picked up and moved back into storage when traders leave.

These "lost" bins do not show up in the "k" menu when there's a depot over them.  All have some goods in them.  If I remove the depot, the bins remain and I can "k" over them, but the dwarves still will not touch them.  I've had this happen in pretty much every game I've played.

When traders show up, I can select these to move them to the depot (displays distance 0 from depot) but the traders will never accept any of the goods in these barrels.

Am I doing something wrong?

Use the appropriate item stockpile.
(Oh, just to clarify it, not the furniture stockpile. Item stockpile for the item contents.)

Hi!

I never encountered that problem. If you have the appropriate stockpiles, that should be a bug. Sorry, nothing more I can say about this.

I find it happens when you change your stockpile configurations. I once had one big stockpile for armor, so I had a bin, half full of local items, half full of goblin trash. I set it to be traded, so it was taken away, but never traded the items out of it. While it was gone, I built another stockpile, and made one for local, one for foreign. That means that the bin with half and half cannot return to any individual stockpile, and your dwarves won't empty it out and separate it.

I suspect this may have happened to you. Check the contents and make sure all of the contents are able to go to one stockpile.

This has happened to me before too, and I suspect it has more to do with custom stockpiles and prodigious item creation.

I'll have a bin of bone crossbows dragged over to the depot, and since I rarely keep my workshops clean, other taskless dwarves will fill up another bin on the stockpile after bringing items to the depot.

I will tend to segregate certain stockpiles too, like leather for instance. All leather that can be locally produced gets a pile (usually, cow/mule/dog/cat/etc), and interesting leather (whale/giant spider chitin/mole/etc.) that was brought by treasure is kept under lock and key for strange moods/demands. If I get a bin from traders that contains mixed types of leather, that bin will stay in the depot if I trade for it all together because my stockpiles don't accept both types of leather. I've found that trading out the local leather first, then trading the rest of the bin with all the weird leather let's my dwarves haul each type to it's respective stockpile.

Also, I've seen what I believe is a dwarf grab a bin from the depot, start hauling and then cancel hauling for drink/eat/sleep. If another bin is hauled to the pile before that task is completed, then the bin sits in limbo until the stockpile is undesignated/redesignated.

expand your stockpiles. If you are putting limits on the number of bins allowed in a stockpiles, the most likely explanation is that when the bin is taken, another replaces it and puts the stockpile back at capacity.

It also appears that hauling nonperishable items from the TD seems to be a low-priority job. I used to think that I was having this problem, but it turned out that my Dwarves just seemed to have a ton of things to do first. :| They got it cleaned off just in time for the next Human caravan...
