Title: Woodcutter/Axedwarf?
Post by: Tacit_Exit on August 04, 2007, 04:09:00 am
So I've been playing with a few different starting builds and have settled on having a dedicated woodcutter (plus pro Mason,Carpenter,Miner,Grower,Cook and Brewer)for the moment.

However it annoys me that my proficient Woody is a peasant. Since I can definately skimp on some supplies I'm considering giving him a 2nd pro-skill and am thinking pro-Axedwarf might fit the bill.

Just wondering if military skills will be worked on if hes not 'activated' to the military, eg: if he takes a swing at annoying wildlife (does this even happen?) while trying to chop trees, or will the two skills be mutually exclusive?

Also wondering if he would get unhappy thoughts from the draft if I do activate him, since woodcutting doesn't seem to be classed as a 'profession' ?

(I read somewhere that dwarves get unhappy thoughts if they have a profession and are drafted.)

The axedwarf skill is used for fighting, the woodcutting skill is for wood cutting. A good woodcutter is a decent axedwarf because they have an iron axe and they have some stats. Dwarfs get unhappy if they are drafted when they have no military skills or are undrafted when they have no non military skills.

Drafting him won't give him too bad a hit on his happiness.  You should give him a shield, though, even if it's made from wood, and maybe some bone armor if you have any to spare.

He doesn't have a "profession" but the fact that he has skill in Wood Cutting will prevent the grumpy thoughts about being relieved of duty.

It is the "peasants" (or military dwarves) who have no civilian skills at all that do not like to be released from the military.

I have taken to giving all of my starting 7 military skills along with thier civilian ones so that I am free to draft whom-ever is closest to the threat without negetive thought penalties. (That and the boost to the defense to start.)
