So my gem setter went into a fey mood. I didn't have the workshop up, so I built it outside because my miners were too busy sleeping and screwing around. He claimed the workshop, put one set of gems in it, and is now just standing around in a corner, outside the workshop. I can't tell what he wants, so will he just stand there til he goes insane?
I'm currently camped next to a goblin fortress, could there be something in there that he wants?

Did you try q then selecting the workshop? That'll see what he/she wants
-
Yeah, I hit 'q' and went to the workshop, but it just said that it'd been claimed by that dwarf. Since he wasn't in the workshop, it didn't say what he wanted. Kind of a moot point now, he went berserk and had to be put down.
My bonecrafter's now on the same track, since there aren't any turtles on this map, and he wants a shell.

Is it possible he was trying to claim an item that was Forbidden/Dumped?
I've never seen a moody dwarf get stuck outside his workshop before... that's weird.
-
Possibly. I dumped a bunch of rocks I wanted moved out of stockpiles, and forbade the clothing and such of the idiots who went running through the goblin fortress next door. But I didn't think they'd use finished goods anyway.
Ah well, it's good to see that this time it (most likely) wasn't my fault.
Another behavior question: My hunter threw a tantrum and broke some things, but I didn't have a sheriff selected yet, nor did I have a jail built. So he followed my expedition leader/miner, who I later made sheriff, with the task "attend meeting." But they never seemed to have a meeting. What, did he get a talking to or something?

Another possibility is that the workshop became inaccessible, but since he managed to drop one item off in it first, I don't see how that could have happened unless you were playing silly buggers with door permissions or something similar. Jeweler's workshops are inaccessible on their entire right sides, so it's pretty easy to build them such that you can't get in or out.
As for turtles: get a small pond well away from any rivers, and set a bunch of dwarves to fishing. Turtles can be fished out of any water supply, no matter where you are. Then you just have to prepare them, get them eaten (forbidding other food supplies helps with this), and let your bonecrafter continue on his merry way.

I built the workshop outside, so it was completely open to enter and leave, no doors to speak of.
Another oddity, all the ponds on the map dried up after the first summer. Maybe it's just too hot.
