Title: loss of pet becoming a problem
Post by: toast on March 27, 2008, 07:11:00 pm
i have loads of animals, and to boost my military, i made loads of war animals (dogs, cows, cats, horses, maybe some other stuff...camels?). anyway, they work great. Each soldier has 5 war animals, and my hunters also use war animals for protection. I have had great success with this. However, i recently had a dragon followed immediately by a seige, and this, of course, killed off loads of animals. Half my military is now very unhappy or miserable, from loss of pet.

How can i fix this? i figure the problem is that they get the negative value multiplied because they lost 3 or 4 out of the 5 they had. Is there a way to change the negative effect? as in get rid of it or lessen it?

I'm not aware of any way to modify the happiness values for various events, but you can make your soldiers happier again by making an absurdly fantastic dining room for everyone, and by giving the soldiers nice individual bedrooms.

I generally only use war dogs on defense, by chaining them up near my fort's entrances. They do an excellent job of spotting thieves. Anything bigger gets the military on them, and they don't really need help from dogs.

Yeah, when you meet your first bronze collossus, I think that with all of those pets being turned into paste, you will end up with worse tantruming issues than if the collossus wasted a number of dwarves.

Better to chain them or cage them than to assign them, except for your legendary woodcutter and herbalist.  They need guard dogs.

Wall off a large enough section of forest and you need never worry about protecting your woodcutters/herbalists.

Very cool engravings and nice things around the fort. That always cheers 'em up.

Welcome to the tantrum spiral. Other ways to cheer people up that weren't mentioned:
Good cooked food/booze, particularly if the dwarf likes the stuff it was made from.
A nice waterfall and its happiness generating mist.
A place to socialize and make friends. *

* this last one however is a bit of a gamble, since dwarves don't like it when a friend dies. This is more of a way to cause a spiral, than to prevent one  ;)

Hmm.. This gives me an idea-
Keep a number of extremely good bedrooms, tombs and throne rooms unassigned, but furnished and ready to go. When disaster strikes, locate the most urgent grief cases (very sad and very connected dwarves) and assign them the rooms.

Minor nit: With the economy, you can't assign bedrooms to anyone who isn't noble or legendary.  However, you *can* assign other rooms.

Or you could just make a royal dining room that you acess via a well constructed platinum block bridge that flows under a waterfall. that'll keep almost anyone happy.
