My bowyer was possessed and made a rather attractive artifact bow. That is bow, not crossbow. Does anyone know if artifacts break the usability rules? If I have arrows can this be used by champion marksdwarves, or is this thing as useful as an artifact ring? Thanks, cheers!

I have no idea, but if he manages to equip it (and thus never ever take off, asfar as i know) and it can't be used, well that would suck.
-
It might be useful if you came back to the fort as an adventurer. Of course, you'd need arrows, too.

I don't think dwarves will use bows. I once had a fort where three of the first four artifacts were bows and I don't recall any of them being picked up.

As far as I've heard, the quality of ranged weapons only matter in melee and don't really affect the firing rate or damage and so on. Could be qrong though.

The quality, I believe, influences firing rate etc. It's the material that doesn't matter in ranged combat.

'Course, a bow in melee does 40 damage, base, using the swordsdwarf skill. Given the artifact boost, that makes it a halfway-decent melee weapon if your dwarves do equip it.

i dont know if artifact bows will be able to be equipped, but i dont think its too hard to add bows to the list of weps dwarves use. just copy it from the gobbo or elf file.

Or you could use it in a trap.

That would require killing elves for their arrows, but that should not be much of an issue.

or... I could just buy them from elves and humans... not all dwarves are cold blooded murderers of every other intelligent race ;)
Also gobs tend to drop plenty o' arrows. I use gob arrows as trade goods presently, they are quite valuable studded with gems and bone.
If I edited the civ file to allow dwarves to wield bows, would I need to regenerate the world or would it take effect immediately?

Sadly, but you still won't have an option in weapon selection menu.
You cab bet on luck only.
