Title: Stopping items from shuffling when revisiting a fortress
Post by: Sappho on August 05, 2007, 08:41:00 pm
Is there any way to stop items from shuffling around when you go back to a fortress in Adventure mode or reclaim it?  I'm creating an entire world full of fun fortresses for people to explore in adventure mode, but if I can't get certain items to stay where they are, it will destroy a lot of the fun.

Any ideas?

Things in the trade depot don't get displaced.

If you want items hidden throughout your fortress, the only way to do that is through the use of depots. Build a bunch of depots hidden in your fort, and place whatever goodies you want the adventurers to discover.

Put one right at the entrance with leather and a copper sword or whatever, and then hide more depots farther in, placing better and better equipment as you go along.

Actually sounds like a decent idea. Just too bad depots are 5x5, you cant just place items in hidden corners and such.

That will do, I didn't realize depots didn't get shuffled.  Are there any other buildings that stay where they're put?  Thanks!  I hope everyone will play my world when it's finished.

I think things cluttering shops don't get displaced either.  I don't remember if that's true though.

I mean the items that were made in that shops and were never moved since their making.

i think anything inside any kind of building stays put.

do stockpiles count as buildings?  If the items are in a stockpile, will they be moved?  If not, that simplifies things greatly, although I assumed that stockpiles weren't safe.

no, they dont count as buildings.  except that you can select them with "q"

yes, things in them get moved.  except stone and ore, which never seems to be moved, ever.

usually, built furniture is not moved.  but i noticed that coffers seem to be randomly moved, even if they've been built as part of a room.  i was on a woodless map, and i gave my dwarfs small rooms with a cabinet/coffer/armorstand so that i could define them as barracks, at least until i got a tree farm up.  but all the coffers were moved -- often times just one square -- but moved none the less.  it was wierd.

So stone and ore are not moved?  That helps.  Are there any other objects that do not move?

What do you plan on doing with the unmoveable stone/ore? Fashion directional arrows and symbols into the ground with them?

But yes, trade depots are the easiest since you can just select what you want in each one very easily. Even nobles will help carry stuff to them. Too bad they are so huge, otherwise it would be more useful for the plans that you have.

I would like to get all of the stone and ore out of certain rooms in the fortress I am making for aesthetic value.  If they will stay out once an adventurer gets there, it is worth moving them - I had figured they would be included in the item shuffling, so I wasn't wasting my time on it.

About the trade depots - since I can only add items to them while a caravan is there, and once the caravan leaves the items will be returned to their respective stockpiles, do I have to abandon the fortress while a caravan is there to prevent them from being moved?  If I do not have stockpiles for the items in them, will they stay "in" the depot after shuffling even though they're not technically still supposed to be there?

Certainly the size of them is annoying.  I wish it were possible to simply set up a container and send specific items to it.  A chest at the end of the maze containing the artifact would be much nicer than a trade depot...
