Strap yourselves in, ladies, gents, and otherwise. Jarringly out of place music, hooo! Seriously, the choice of music was excellent.  :P

No, I mean it. The music turned the narm into charm! (Okay, not really, it just kept me awake.)

Honestly I don't know what is with people and making ultimate weapons with ordinary sword names?

Diakatana = Long Sword

Ohh the TERROR!

I know bleach named its ultimate swords after "Horse-slaying swords" but in their defense it was because the name transmigrated.

"Diakatana" would mean "Day Sword". Which actually sounds pretty awesome.  :P

Dang this game is OBSESSED with loading screens.

It must be Heichi's mechanism. Beware of Dancing bears, Boxing Kangaroos, and Boxing Dinosaurs.

Ooooh music!

I already have my next music suggestion lined up (ok not really... this music is too Salsa and awsome for this game. I'll give it more thought.)

Though I am very curious as to what you chose to be next.

Honestly when I played Sonic for the xbox360 I thought it was the worst with "Loading screens for a few seconds of gameplay" and while it still is... Daikatana apperantly tutored that game in needless loading screens.

Did you see the loading screen for a second area only to get another one immediately when he left?

How about this: A Loading Screen counter

A daikatana is just a two handed style of katana... It's basically a broadsword to the longsword.

And it isn't even one of those "Entertainingly boring" games where as long as you arn't the one playing it you can have fun.

This is pretty mind numbingly boring just to watch too.

I actually became more interested in what he was eating then in what was going on.

Hmm games that had GOOD sewer levels?

TMNT In Time (at least I liked it)

This.

Here is the thing. When Daikatana started sure it was bad but at least it could pretend it was "Saving the best for later" afterall the starting enemies were Robot Dragonflies and Frogs. We all played games where the start was cripplingly boring against enemies that really should be beneith our dignity.

Later on Daikatana stops even pretending it has the pretense that it will get good. Though in my oppinion that happened at the second level.

See, Daikatana's pushing the limits of what makes a game difficult. Not content with the usual escort mission pain, they decided what you really needed was an AI companion that would steal your ammo and health, and then wander off when you weren't looking.

Also, did anyone else hear "Superfly" and think "wait, there's a boss version of those stupid dragonflies?"

It's clear that John Romero was in fact a misunderstood genius who realized that the only way to make a truly difficult game was to break more things than a Mafia enforcer with a baseball bat.

I was wrong, very, very, wrong. Thank you, I mean you suffered through the terrible physics of Jurassic park, now the horrid game design of Diakatana. I mean I think we can all tell this is taking its toll, but I'd be damned if you don't see this through!

Every time you equip the C4 launcher, I exclaim: "WRONG GUN!"

And so far, I've been right every time. Seriously: fires shots that deal enormous amounts of damage to you, yet can't fly more than a few metres ahead. And if you miss, you now have to defuse your own explosives or they'll happily kill you. Best of all, you almost never face two or more enemies close enough together that the splash damage would be useful.

Am I missing something, or is there really no possible reason for the C4 Launcher to exist?

First of all: Who designed these bases?  Dr. Eggman?  Robot frogs, robot mice with rocket launchers, robot crocodiles?  Who designs self-aware robots and then makes them frogs?  And who puts rockets on a mouse and then doesn't put lasers on the crocodiles?

Second: I keep expecting the next video to just be you cussing for like three minutes straight, just nonstop swearing until the video cuts out.

Third: I like how the rocket launcher becomes standard after a while.  It's like "Fuck it, I'm blowing everything to hell."  Similarly, using 6 shotgun shells against an unarmed and oblivious union worker.

I also feel like this game is best played in one sitting, so that the rage can fester properly.  If you take breaks, you lose out on the raw hatred.

It works in the first level when you are infultrating. You know hidden security measures that are nice to look at. Like the rock cameras people have.

Now why Frogs KEEP showing up even after you are deep into the enemy base is beyond me.
Title: Re: Let's play - Daikatana - Nitrogen gel?
Post by: Kilroy the Grand on November 10, 2012, 04:52:23 am
This game is just confusing now, nitrogen gel? Wouldn't the room either be so full of nitrogen to be unbreathable, or so cold that it would kill you even without touching it? Some doors are even glitched so that I need to noclip through them to activate them from the other side. Not to mention this entire level was a death trap to superfly, it took me several tries to get him through because he would fall into the nitrogen.

Third: I like how the rocket launcher becomes standard after a while.  It's like "Fuck it, I'm blowing everything to hell."  Similarly, using 6 shotgun shells against an unarmed and oblivious union worker.

Well at this point in the game most of my weapons are completely useless, they simply don't do enough damage to kill things. Only the shotgun and rocket launcher can.

And there is no way I'm playing this in one sitting.

Also: enemy weapons. Why do all the guards in this game have nothing but handguns?

You find lots of ammo for your crazy rocket launchers, and ion blasters, and C4 launchers scattered around the base. (Heck, you originally found the weapons themselves in the base!) This would be plausible if the guards were armed with these crazy weapons. Instead, they've got handguns, completely boring except for their amazing ability to reliably self-destruct when their handler is killed.

You've got 'camouflaged' robots in ventilation shafts, and guards neglecting the abundant ion blaster ammo in favour of terrible handguns. What part of this enemy design makes sense?
Title: Re: Let's play - Daikatana - Nitrogen gel?
Post by: ed boy on November 10, 2012, 07:27:06 pm
Given how hard it is to use some of these weapons without dying (see: Ion blaster that can't be aimed perpendicular to the walls or it'll come right back at you, C4 Launcher that can't seem to launch far enough away to get its user out of the area of effect, shotgun that continues to fire after you let go of the trigger, etc), it seems like the shitty handguns they use are the logical choice.

Come on - it's a blade with some sort of time-manipulation mechanic. (If I heard the intro right.)

Clearly, it lets you travel back in time and acquire some decent weapons, like a pistol that doesn't hit you with shrapnel, or C4 that can be thrown a decent distance and then detonated at will, or a shotgun that doesn't fire 6 shots at once. I know that's what I'd do, given both the power to alter time, and the current slate of weapons.

Yes, but only in a decent game (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/86/Sands_of_time_cover.jpg).  ;)

Okay, technically the dagger's in charge of time manipulation. But sssh!

I just realised this now

Why is he the protagonist? His one skill was that he could use a sword... Sorta, given our starting level I can only assume he has the matching skill of a Elementary school Kenpo teacher.

Yet the game almost exclusively does not use swords and in fact uses guns instead. I almost feel like they would have been better off getting the guy who teaches guns down the street and having him deliver the Daikatana to the sword guy.

Imagine how unstoppable we would be if they got that guy instead.
