Title: Shizzle 16x20 ASCII - v1.3 Final
Post by: MasterShizzle on December 06, 2012, 07:16:59 pm
After literally fives of minutes of exhaustive research I was unable to find an ASCII tileset that looked comfortable on an HD monitor, so I made my own. This tileset is the default ASCII, with each tile redrawn by hand and some very light shading done. It runs natively in 1280x500, which I found to be the best compromise between the aesthetics of square sets and the compact efficiency of default ASCII.

This is the final version I'll be doing. I managed to round off the wall corners fairly nicely, as well as some tiny things here and there.

The smoothed floor is interesting.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm still looking for ways to improve the look, and perhaps make the letters a bit wider. Dunno. I had my heart set on diagonal walls as well, but in a non-square tileset I'm finding it harder than I thought.

ASCII PRYDE *manly chestbump*

This is a pretty good tileset. I like this tileset.

Yeah it looks good.  I like the smoothed floor and the walls.  Also agree with making the text wider, for me the appeal of a non-square tileset is the text is easier to read, so something with less space between characters would be cool.  Could you just put the tileset image in the OP?

I like how it looks, but I find it too big for my laptop monitor. Though I might try it.

Done. Source image is added to the top post.

Neat. I'll take it in use immediately. The smoothed floor looks awesome, too.

Just recently came back to the game now that I'm laid up with a broken ankle. Relearning it in ASCII and this looks to be a good middle ground with things a little bit clearer and distinguishable.

Edited the lettering a little bit to make it wider, and the font now fills up the spaces nicely. Rather than edit what was already there I decided to just make both versions available. Update in original post.

The more I play with it, the more I like the wide font. Edited the stockpile tile a bit to make it more "background"-ey, and I'm calling it done for now. Updated versions will now be available both here and on the wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository#MasterShizzle).

Oh, and I posted the tileset on the wiki.

New player here. Spent some time mucking about with Phoebus/Ironhand/Mayday and came to the conclusion that modding my own version of the game ends up being a less than pleasant experience what with all the raw edits those packs sometimes need that conflict with the mods. Figured out it'd be best to get used to ascii and stick with it. For the past week and a half or so I've been mostly getting used to ascii and by now I think I got it and can "read the matrix code" recognizing what's what on the screen.

I've tried a few tilesets on the wiki since on a 24" Full HD monitor 800x600 curses tends to be less than ideal but I've always found some things I didn't like. Be it the font, the way a certain tile is depicted, etc..so I ended up going back to 800x600 till my eyes politely requested something a bit less painful.

I saw this post a while ago and figured I'd give it a go and so far I can say it's pretty much the only tileset I haven't found anything to make me dislike it. Tried both normal and wide font and I'm yet to decide which one I like the most. I instantly recognized everything on screen since it's basically the same as vanilla, I like the way text is displayed on both versions, I like pretty much everything on them possibly except the faded background on characters like ":" "." but that's just me being /extremely/ picky. The smoothed/engraved tiles looks particularly pretty.

In conclusion, a job well done. Thank you for this!

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

The final version is up, modifications in the OP. Rounded corners, and nothing else major. Enjoy!

First, one of the new tilesets that I've been tempted to download.

However, a gripe with the delivery:

The tile ÷ is a special format to more closely resemble a barrel. However, it's distinctly different from %. This means that pumps blink in an annoying and distracting fashion.

Awesome tileset, thanks for sharing your work.
