Title: Let's Play Disgaea DS
Post by: UltraValican on December 07, 2012, 08:00:03 pm
I accidentally closed this tab after writing a fancy explanation of the big twist ,so now I have to summarize.
Disgaea is a Strategy RPG made by Nippon Ichi Software, originally made for the PS2, the game received a DS incarnation. We will be playing the DS incarnation.
This LP will be interactive, after the "tutorial" I can create several characters assuming I have the mana. You, the audience can request a character.
Spoiler: Sheet (click to show/hide)

Well, I guess that explains everything so far. I'm still working all of this out. Feel free to ask questions.

Sorry about the "twist", but I'm just allowing character requests now.

With the twist iced, this space will be reserved for party Information. I will take care of this later.

Hm, are there any big changes in game mechanics between Disgaea DS and HoD?

In any case, I'll take a Scout, name: Scatter Shark XR.

I will be taking screenshots of battles mostly, You can get voiced cut scenes from you tube separately. Taking Screenies of all the cut scenes gets annoying after a while.
I will post annotations and a few screenies of cut-scenes, just in case you want to know whats going on.
Without further ado, lets get on with it!

Laharl:ZZZZZZZZ
Etna:Prince!
???:ZZZZZZZZ
Lahral:PRINCE WAKE UP
???:ZZZZZZ
Etna:This brat just wont wake up! Well that theres only one thing left to do.
Etna prepares to bust a cap in our ass, right as we begin to wake up.
Etna:Oh prince..heh-heh
Etna procedes to give Laharl(Purple headed guy) the low down on whats been going on since he was sleeping. You might be wondering "Why would she need to do that", well Laharl has been sleeping for TWO GODDAMN YEARS! During those two years two things happened.
Laharl's father, the Overlord(think Demon King), got Iced by...something. The local demon rulers caught wind, and instead of pissing themselves at the prospect of an entity that could kill a Demon Ruler that pretty much rules by force, they bicker and fight over the throne because Laharl went MIA.

Naturally, Laharl is pissed. He decides to embark on a campaign to loot, rob, and figuratively fuck his way to the throne.
Etna decides to tag along.
Spoiler: Hub World (click to show/hide)

As weird and emo as he looks, I'll take one for the team by being a Male Healer.

Name : Korbac
Class : Male Healer
Bio : After years of listening to goth music and hurting himself, 'Korbac' engaged his self - pity in a wrestling match and killed it, and decided to become a healer.

FAKEEDIT: READING INTRO NAOH

You hit the nail on the head with the "emo" desciption. I'll post screens, but that's exactly how the game says healers feel. Healing people is a sin among demons, so male clerics wear spiked robes to "repent" for their job description.
Also, mention what weapon you want to use. Healers are good with Staves and Bows, and have mediocre spear ability.

Dunno if guns are available from such an early stage, or if this is OP or not...

Name: Sirus
Class: EDF Soldier
Bio: Sirus was testing an experimental faster-than-light space ship when it (possibly) malfunctioned and he wound up in the Underworld (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/EventHorizon?from=Main.EventHorizon)! The poor guy is now working for demons in order to eat, and hope of returning home steadily fades.
Preferred Weapons: Guns

Post by: Korbac on December 07, 2012, 09:06:47 pm
Yeah, I read the description briefly. Not sure why'd they'd do something if they thought it was a sin, mind you - it would be a bit like me robbing grannies while whipping myself.

As I hear Male Healers are better offensively than Females, I'll take Staves, but I'd rather spend most of my time as a support (as I'm sure you'd play me anyways.) :)

Can't wait to start! :)

Warriors (Male/Female): Melee attackers, they have sword aptitude and either axe or spear for males and females, respectively.

Brawlers (Male/Female): Fighters that rely on their fists. They have better speed (And thus dodge) than warriors but they don't get full protection from armor.

Ninja (Male): Basically brawlers with even more speed; though they get pretty good at axes as well. They also tend to counterattack a lot.

Samurai (Female): Basically a stronger warrior, better aptitudes and have masteries in sword, axe, and spear.

Thief (Female): Essentially useless in combat due to low aptitudes in pretty much everything aside from Hit and Speed. Their main purpose is to steal, which they are the best at (All classes max out at 50% steal rate where the thief can hit 99%). They also can throw characters up to a range of 6 and have the ability to steal stats from enemies.

Mage/Skull (Female/Male): Magic users. The magic they can use (Fire/Wind/Ice/Star) depends on which kind of mage/skull your create (Red/Green/Blue/Star). Prism mages/skulls can use fire, ice, and wind.

Knight (Female): Hybrid melee/caster units; they have an ability where whenever they use a melee attack, they might also throw in a random spell attack. Their aptitudes tend to be a bit lower as is expected of hybrid classes.

Cleric (Male/Female): Healing classes. Practically essential. Not really much more to say.

Archer (Female): Shoots with bows. Bow skills tend to be more impart status effects than deal moar damage; which is fairly useful to an extent. Can also use guns, but is limited in skill.

Scout (Male): Uses guns and has two unique abilities: Dark Cannon and Geo Change. Dark Cannon places a dark cannon which the player can use to shoot at enemies; though watch for ally kills due to explosive damage. While Geo Change randomly generates Geo Blocks/Patterns. Each ability can only be used once per map per scout and Geo change can only be used on item world or already cleared maps.

Majin/Angel: These two classes require multiple level 200/100 classes so we're pretty far from unlocking them. They're as powerful as you'd expect.

Males and females of the same class have slightly different stats. For the most part, males tend to hit harder where females move faster.

One thing to remember about magic users is that they can also use any spells that their "pupils" know (It's basically the only way to get Flonne viable early game). I'll let UV explain that system further.

And then we have monster classes. You gain the ability to make them once you beat them (Beating more makes them cost less mana) or just catch them; and there's way too many to explain here.

We start out with Prinnies, which have low stats all around until they get up in the tiers. They also explode when you throw them or hit them with explosive attacks (Like the aforementioned Dark Cannon).

Of special note are Succubi and Nekomata. While pretty much every other class stands still when idle, Succubi and Nekomata classes tend to err... "bounce" while idle.

I wouldn't worry too much about Majins and Angels, they're beyond gamebreakers at this point.

Aside from Laharl, Etna, and the Prinnies we're a bit short on melee attackers... Oh well, more for us I suppose.

If possible:

Name: Sanya Ot Volk
Class: Female Samurai
Bio: In life, was cursed by a vengeful dark lord and mind-controlled into burning her own village to the ground. After being released from said lord's control, she sought solace with the gods and found none. Driven to hunt the lord down, she soon found her abilities to be nothing worthy of surviving the wilderness let alone defeating an evil king. Sanya soon awoke in Hell tired, confused, and hungry. More than willing to employ herself and her sword to a problem, she seeks to eventually save up enough Hl to buy her freedom- or at least pay for a fair trial.

She's friendly with others and still quite innocent, she dosen't seem like someone who would ever wind up in Hell. She's not easy to make angry, preferring a happy-go-lucky approach to things. If you manage to truly anger her, however, she'll explode like a powder keg.

Preferred Weapon: Swords, preferably ones with fire affinity or element.

Goddammit, I just got through divvying up the Hl, and killing off the level slaves.
I'll work on summoning up your character. Weapons don't have elemental affinities in this game.

Sirus doesn't need Int, Gun damage is based solely on Hit. I'm significantly more worried about his SP (1?!?).

EDF Soldiers are unlocked once someone reaches Gun Mastery 30 so they're pretty up there in terms of class tier.

Yeah, something tells me he won't be unleashing super attacks of any description for a while. Still, with any luck he'll be able to deal decent damage just by shooting things.

Well shit. The EXP cheat won't shut off, so I have to restart and unlock the classes the way the creators intended. This means I won't be getting the Edf sold
I had some bad news, but restarting and loading in game solved it.
I''m still using story characters to grind for Tsuch's character.

Sirus, I could give you an orb to boost SP total.

I have 151 Hl. If anyone wants something, I'll spare them 51 Hl.
I'll save the 100 for healing if and when I need it.

Its pretty much you guys and Laharl, I might rotate Story Characters throughout stages, just for variety sakes. Etna isn't being deployed because she's freakishly over leveled for this chapter(15). She got a kill during class unlocks.

I'll make an update on available monsters and such in the OP.

Updated accounts, I forgot base payment and only paid bonuses.

Was kinda worried about how Korbac would be paid being a cleric and all, but I see there was nothing to worry about.

Really, really want that blood orb since it's got armsmaster and I've got to compete with Sirus in terms of Gun Mastery, but it's waaaaaay too expensive. Are there any other decent orbs around? Might want to build up 30SP for Dark Cannon so we can start leveling it up.

Also, are there any bonuses/penalties that you'll implement in case we make pupils of other people's characters?

I noticed the 'problem' and was about to have a joke "ULTRAVATICAN WHY U NO LIKE MOST IMPORTANT MEMBER OF TEAMMMM?!?!" but then I realised as I probably wouldn't be fighting much I wouldn't need as much cash.
I sorta wanted to leave character development up to the audience, but I'm planning on teaching your Character some Elemental Spells, so you won't be completely defenseless. Healers don't gain exp just from healing/buffing(that was changed in Disgaea 2).

Quote
Also, are there any bonuses/penalties that you'll implement in case we make pupils of other people's characters?
Well, at the moment all characters created for the audience are products of nonpersons or story characters(Sanya is Etna's pupil) if I recall. I'm planning on using story characters to create new troops.

Spoiler: Corridor of Love Stats (click to show/hide)
Where are the bonuses? Well, I'm changing the payment system for a couple of reasons. A. The bonuses people are receiving are fairly miniscule, and since everyone gets ten percent of the pie, the moment we get a "full" party everyone will get zilch in bonuses. So I'm implementing a "head" system.
For the early chapters every character will recieve 100 Hl per kill, this number will readjusted as shop prices increase.

I'll update with the actual report later. This will probably be the last change to the system, unless another problem crops up.
I wont post shop listings until I switch to rank 2 shop. You all have the highest gear for rank 1.
If any one wants it, I have an Imperial seal that I'm auctioning off, starting at 500 HL.

Is someone keeping tabs of our wallets?

Whether I want the seal really depends; if I can get a pair of magnifying glasses I'd be set for awhile.

The Emblem's HP/SPD bonuses are more useful for a melee character; all I really need are Hit and SP  since gun range is ridiculous so I shouldn't be getting hit at this point anyways.

One thing that great about the first game then say 3 or 4 is that there not as many story char you get I would do this with 4 but not sure how I get the pic and I always just end up using story hero only pretty much.

Come to think of it, doesn't anyone think that Laharl only having combo attacks with girls so far seems a bit odd considering his... condition?

So yeah.
Also, what does that Imperial Seal do?
IIRC, it gives +10 to all stats aside from HP, which gets +20.

That is amazing
Emblems are, for most purposes, THE items to use, but they can't be bought so you can only steal or get them from the bonus gauge.  They're better off in the hands of classes that require more than one stat to be viable, particularly magic knights, healers, archers, or melee classes.

Edit 2:Hmm since there no Land of Carnage or Class World he will be stuck using Item World for all the good stuff

Edit 3: Also

Item World isn't really worth it this early in the game, especially since we don't have a thief to get epic loots with. We can resort to using a high level Surt or something; though a decently leveled Nekomata should pass for now.

What's the policy for item worlding?

Also, she is only available on NewGame+ which we may not be on.

I think I may have bitten off a little more than I can chew, this being my first LP and all. I'm not stopping, but I'm considering icing the "account" part of this LP. Items costs skyrocket towards the "endgame", and I'm not sure if it would be viable to continue this. I apologize for not really thinking this through. I might still do it, but recording records after EVERY battle is getting a bit monotonous. You can still request characters, but I'm just asking if its cool with everyone to change this into a somewhat normal LP. Again, I'm really sorry.

Thank you for your understanding now ON TO THE SLAUGHTER. We absolutely curb stomp the final stage of Chapter 1.
Spoiler: Cutscene:Midboss (click to show/hide)
Now, before we kick Mid-Boss's ass into the next few chapters, I guess I should talk about  briefly about The Dark Assembly.

Despite being royalty, Laharl will need to implore other demons to pass certain bills in order to obtain certain benefits. This will cost mana,(the stuff you get from killing stuff), and you will need to go through a vote. This Vote is the games way of telling you to go fuck yourself. You can bribe Senators with shit in your inventory(I use candy), to make them inclined to vote for you, but they ARE demons and they WILL vote "nay" for shits and giggles. If by chance your bill doesn't pass(Because you didn't try to pass the bill "Lets end the assembly and order pizza), you can try to force the bill by force. I've only done this once on my first play through. Senators are powerful, and they will wreck your shit in.
Now, in order to suggest certain bills, your character will need to pass an exam. No, you don't have to answer questions, you just have to be able to kill stuff.
Spoiler: Laharl's examination (click to show/hide)

Now, time for your scheduled Midboss-Asskicking.

Spoiler: Post Battle Cutscence (click to show/hide)
Next time on Makai Senkai Bootikai Tenkaichi Gt Disgaea: Laharl gets assassinated, and we beat the shit out of some imps in a frozen hellscape.
