Title: Let's Play EU3: The Dark Continent, Part 3: When the War Came
Post by: Cicero on December 11, 2012, 10:27:50 pm
The Dark Continent is an alternate history scenario for EU3 included in the miscmods pack where Europe has been entirely depopulated by the Black Plauge, giving other nations a chance to explore, colonize and conquer the world. Note: I have never played this scenario before, although I have played a lot of EU3 so this will be a semi-blind LP. Now I'm going to let you guys vote on the country, here's three, each with a little intro...

Spoiler: Inuit (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Rum (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Ethiopia (click to show/hide)

This LP will be mostly text with some screenshots. This being EU3, I won't be attempting to communicate every in-game event that occurs as that would be boring. Rather I will be providing an overview of our nation's history, telling a story as it were. It will also be character driven, with the ingame leader serving as the principal character, supplemented by characters created by you. Want to hear a story about the colonization effort? Create an adventurous sea captain! Our military expansion? Create a lieutenant! Or more court intrigue? Create an advisor! I'll take as few or as many details as you want to make up!

EDIT: Inuit is the winner! Now about characters, as I said I'll take any details you want to give, but as a general rule I need at least these things:

1) A name that is at least somewhat cool/fitting (ie: not Raurisaurus1999)
2) Some sort of profession or background so I can work them into the universe

Personality traits are good too, but I can fill in the blanks if necessary. Really I just need the two basic things. Lastly if you want to influenece how your character develops after they get a story go right ahead, that's what will make this interesting!

Great to see someone do a Grand Strategy LP, was recently thinking of doing one myself actually.

I say we pick Inuit, unite the tribes of America and colonize Europe.

I can image Europe getting colonized pretty quickly before the Inuit will be able to make it over the sea. Rum seems kinda neat, but it could be slow going in the beginning.

Inuit is the most interesting of the three, I'd say. It's an interesting idea, an American exploration mission finding a post-apocalyptic, ruined Europe.

Inuit. I suggest some awesome pan-american empire (from the frozen north all the way to the cape in the south) before looking over the oceans at Asia or Europe.

The current tally is:

Inuit 4
Ethiopia 3
Rum: 1

Due to the closeness I'll give this another day before starting to play the first update.

I say Inuit.  Who cares about Europe?  They killed them selves off, so let's leave the peoples over there to squabble over the ashes.  While we build up to invade and steal what they built over the ashes.

Inuit, although tech group is going to be a bitch (unless the scenario changes that). Expand far enough south and you find yourself with an interesting quandary -- do you try to reach Europe through the northern route (Newfoundland->Greenland->Iceland->Scotland/Norway) or the southern route (Brazil->Azores->Iberia).

Hail Emperor Ishqulutuq! (note: I remember somebody here actually being fluent in Inuktitut, so if I just said something horribly offensive, I apologize)

IIRC the Mod gives peeps like Inuit a big-ass boost in the beginning to the tech-rate.

Don't recall what happens afterwards.

In the scenario the native americans get pushed into a better tech group (75% tech speed) via an event fairly quickly. You can't colonize until you reform your government if you're one of the hordes, though.

Well it looks like Inuit is the winner! Due to insomnia my unending generousity I'll post a mini-update now. I'll also update the first post with specifics on character creation for those who are interested, otherwise enjoy this first mini-update.

Part 1: The Time of the Midnight Sun

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sorry for the update's length, I sort of got carried away once I started writing, I'll try to cut down on text in future updates. This is more of a flavourful intro than anything, giving some exposition and background to the Inuit and explaining the origin of the people as a 'nation'. In game terms all that happened was a slider change but oh well.  :P Also here's a picture of the advisor screen for anyone who might be curious.

Well, given that the Latin tech group is, you know, kind of.....dead.

A few Catholic nations survive, and even some orthodox and the Saami.

Unfortunately the Scottish isles and the Baleares and whatnot can't expand very much at the beginning due to both slow colonist acquirement and a crippling lack of monies. It could be interesting to play one if you could survive the first rush for Europe, but hot damn is it boring for the first century.

Part 3: When the War Came

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Shall we concede defeat, keeping the captured territory (didn't get a pic of it, but we pillaged a territory into submission), or shall we keep fighting for more land and revenge? I'm going to leave this one up to you guys. Also updated the front page with links and stuff, and here's a map of our world at present. Thanks for reading!
