Title: Glaciers Forming?
Post by: Bumber on January 13, 2013, 03:19:56 am
I was crawling over a frozen ocean (lost my feet to a croc, I carried them around with me in a bag) when all of the sudden a large square of ice (approximately 20x20, sorry didn't get a pic of this) got uplifted into a wall (causing DF to become non-responsive for a few seconds.) I got a few more of these as I traveled and until finally one massive, screen-filling one tossed me up and encased me in ice:

Is this a normal feature or a bug?

Basically, the ocean froze because the temperature dropped below 1000° Urist.

It was already frozen when I was crossing it. Random square areas thawed for a second (causing the game to become unresponsive,) then froze into an ice wall one z-level higher.

Made another adventurer and got back out there. More pics and a save:

Take a few steps to the west and...

BAM! Icewalls.

I guess they don't call them the "Oceans of Appearing" for nothing. I'd say it's definitely a glitch.

dafuq.

OK, my guess is that it's got something to do with waves. These waves are only present on a subatomic level, but occasionally collide with water particles to create the Icewall effect. Now, in extremely cold climates, these icewalls are far more frequent, and have a habit of causing instadeath to anyone or anything. Metallic objects have been known to survive the Icewall effect, but never, ever a living (or dead...) creature.

It's a well-known bug that makes frozen oceans all the more deadly. It relates to the way water freezes and thaws in response to temperature. Your best bet is to swim across tropical oceans where the water never freezes.

So, no Icewall-effect waves?

It's pretty annoying. Looking forward to Toady taking another look at liquids. Magma you can walk on and water that freezes slowly from the top down, icebergs and stuff... that'd be real neat. But, he can't do everything at once. Maybe he'll get to that when he handles maritime trade and shipping?

Along with ports/harbours...

But first he'll need to fix the economy. And actually implement ships. And a plethora of other things.
