Title: One Fans Thanks
Post by: The13thRonin on November 09, 2007, 11:03:00 pm
I started up a thread over at Facepunch forums (a forum with a user base of around 100,000 active users) and it seemed to catch on like wildfire for quite a few of the more intelligent users. Here's the thread (my name is Stallion on those forums): http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/showthread.php?t=440819

Dwarf Fortress is the first game I have ever advertised with a passion and shamelessly recommended to every single PC gamer I know. It simply is a GREAT game. Possibly one of the greatest games accessible to the PC gamer in our time. Sure it doesn't have Bioshock or Crysis' graphical capabilities but all of that is irrelevant. This game is so deep and so immersing that it simply kicks the crap out of most to all commercial games. The best part and the part that draws the most respect from me is that Toady and his brother supply all this for our enjoyment, for free. They work tirelessly for no profit besides our donations which I imagine sustain DF related costs anyway. And the community here is impeccable. Nowhere else in any other game will you find such a great community willing to help new players. Dwarf Fortress has become for me I guess, almost the holy grail of gaming. It represents everything I love about the gaming market and everything it should be.

I guess what I'm trying to say is if I ever see you around and about ThreeToe and Toady One the drinks are on me  :).

I think part of the reason Dwarf Fortress is successful is that its relatively unique. Sure it might be similar to Dungeon Keeper or a roguelike but that doesn't mean its a complete copy. Unlike commercial games of late - Crysis really is just another boring FPS once you get down to it. Its essentially doing what Electronic Arts does with sports games - take the same gameplay, give the graphics a facelift, and pass it off as a new game.

In some ways this is passing on to Linux. Software, including operating systems, doesn't have to cost money to be successful. Instead its being made by people who actually enjoy making it. Not only that but fans are able to suggest additions to games and have them added regardless of whether or not they've given anything, money included, towards it.

Nothing says thanks like a cash donation...

Good idea. I look forward to seeing you make one     :).

I would donate too if I had access to a damn credit card    :(. I wish I did.

I don't believe a credit card is necessary for PayPal. I believe you can set up an account as along as you have a checking account someplace. Once its set up you just transfer money to your PayPal account and then use it to pay for something.

I think it's either a credit card (a mastercard electronic won't do..  :( ) or a bank account that's valid in US. I don't think many of our russian banks are valid in US, so it's either credit card or naught.
