Title: MEDIC!!!
Post by: Tenderroast on March 24, 2013, 09:58:07 pm
I got sick and tired of my dwarves sitting in the hospital, starving to death, due to lazy chief medical dwarves not even bothering to look at them, and saying "Yup, you cant walk for shit. Here, have a crutch." I couldn't find any kind of mod, or fix, or idea to make the useless maggots medics do their jobs. So, i decided to make my own mod to do it. I couldnt figure out a way to mod the job priority of the chief medic, so I found a work around.... make it so that MORE maggots medics could check out patients to start the treatment plans.

The following is a mod that adds a new noble position. Intern Medics! You can have as many as you want, as long as you have a chief medic

Intern Medic

Add that to entity_default.txt (I don't know if placement matters, as long as its in the dwarf area or not, but for neatness sake, i put mine right under neath the chief medic's noble tag)

p.s. Works really great if you use any of the mods that put in training workshops so you can force your medics to learn to diagnose problems.
Also, if any other modder wants to us this in any way, shape, or form in their mod, feel free.

I am now slamming my head against the wall because WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS

Does the chief medical dwarf have to see every patient before they get diagnosed, or is that just another fancy word for diagnostician?

I've been furiously trying to figure out why my injured dwarves are dealing with so many untreated injuries.

I believe by default only the chief medical dwarf can diagnose patients, yes. He does use the diagnostician skill to do so, but even if other doctors have the skill they won't use it.

No. Friggin. Way.

You made my day, thank you. For too long, I was just adding extra people to the job of diagnostician until someone came up and actually did the job.

Code: [Select]
[RESPONSIBILITY:HEALTH_MANAGEMENT]
that is what makes them go do the diagnosis, and since only nobles can have that tag....

Valikdu has been ecstatic lately. He had witnessed an amazing discovery.

Awesome. Will be applying, and I hope the Toady One takes notice of this.

I'm pretty sure Toady knows, since he is the one who created the code that make RESPONSIBILITY:HEALTH_MANAGEMENT token do stuff ;)

I mean that I hope he realizes that there's a way to fix it that isn't terribly difficult, apparently.

Great, this makes me feel incredibly unoriginal with my assistant medical dwarf position.

This is cool, but I would like to point out one important thing: The only thing the Chief medical dwarf does is enable the healthcare screen. He is not required to do diagnostic work on patients, and any dwarf with the diagnostician skill enabled will do the job.

So while this is cool, all it does is give you the ability to have the healthcare screen enabled without having a chief medical dwarf.

Isnt he needed for this first diagnostic on a dwarf, before anyone else does anything on him? I am not entirely sure about this, but I think I remember this. It might have changed, or might have been false information all along, but I read it on several occasions. Which might or might not be true, regardless of what I just send smake in a PM, saying that it is true. ^^

:D lol

My personal favorite twist on healthcare is appointment-as-needed workers who also do [RESPONSIBILITY:BUILD_MORALE] and [RESPONSIBILITY:MEET_WORKERS].

Advocates of nonstandard bureaucracy might also like multiple MANAGE_PRODUCTIONers to validate those work orders ASAP.

Semantic nit-picking but -- "any dwarf with the diagnostician skill enabled will do the job" is perhaps more accurately, CAN do the job.  WILL do the job if restricted to a  hospital warren.  Probably.  Just sayin'.  It's rather like, any dwarf with item hauling labor enabled CAN carry the leftover stuff to the Atom Smasher, but when he feels like getting around to it seems to be a random event.

This is a very elegant fix. Kudos to you, sir.

I've noticed that enabling diagnosis ability across a large swath of dwarves gets everyone out the hospital door quicker after a siege and the problems with chronic rot and infection have mostly gone away, even without soap.

I especially do that when playing kobold camp. They seem to have a huge number of wounded if so much as a honey badger falls into the cave pit.

Me, too. In a mature fort, I will have 3 to 5 dwarves assigned each of the doctor skills. If, say, you have four dwarves each assigned only the 'diagnostician' skill, you should have no problem with dwarves getting diagnosed quickly.

Very interesting. Going to be playing with the non-standard bureaucracy.
