Title: Training with Crossbows
Post by: Hazman on August 19, 2006, 03:34:00 am
I've recently recruited my first squad and kitted them out with crossbows and stuff, but I can't work out how to get them to train. I've got archery targets set up as rooms with the direction and everything, but they simply won't use them. Do the ranges have to be in the barracks as well?
Also, do dwarves in strange moods stop sketching what they want when they've got it, or will they keep sketching pitures of it?

I'm pretty sure the target will have to be in the barracks.  As for inspired dwarves, I believe they will demand everything they need, even if they have it already.

Your squad has to be 'standing down' and not 'on duty' for them to train or spar. The archery range doesn't need to be inside or next to the barracks, but it's probably a good idea to have them be close for efficiency's sake.

You also need to have spare bolt piles around.  I don't think they use the ones they are carrying for soldier duty.

Yeah, it's important -- they keep giving hints on things they have.

eh? if they have to be in the barracks, what's the point in having a separate archery range room?

mind you.. i'm not sure there's a point in setting up a barracks with a bed either (as opposed to armor stand/wep rack).. as i had one with multiple beds and a dwarf just waltzed in and claimed it.. on the other hand.. if you set the squads to sleep in barracks, i've read somewhere that some of them will be woken up by training. no good either.

best thing will be to split them up.. barrack sleeping quarters (unclaimable) / barrack training areas / armory

ps... if i set military to sleep in room, is that room room.. or is it just any old bed lying around? i have planned to make proper individual rooms plus an area with a whole load of beds, but not made into a bedroom (will it make any difference if i slap a door on to each bed or leave them as 1 single big room?)

sort of like this

code:

#######d#######
#             #
#d#d#d#d#d#d#d#
#b#b#b# #b#b#b#
#######d#######
#   d d d d   #
#bed#c# #c#bed#
#rm #t# #t#rm #
#######d#######

I've never had a problem with dwarfs claiming a bed in the armory, but I set each individual bed to armory=Y, dunno if that's necessary but I always do it.  Oops I take that back, I just checked my current game and I forgot to set a newly-placed bed to armory=Y, and a dwarf did claim it...

The requirement to have spare bolts is probably the issue you were having, it took me quite awhile to figure that out myself. It's a pretty smart feature actually because it means they won't spend all available ammo on training and end up having to bash things with their xbows.

What I ended up doing for my archery ranges was  dig 1x6 tunnels with an archery target at the end of each, then defined the archery range 'room' with a separate room for each target. I did this because I noticed in a room with four archery targets only the room-defining target was being shot at.

how do you set a bed to barracks without making it a bedroom 1st?

I don't think you can, but if you sweep out a larger room and set it to be a barracks, all of the beds under it are too.  Arch. target rooms don't have to be in the barracks.
