Title: Do the mason shop use any stone available?
Post by: sofakng on August 22, 2006, 02:40:00 pm
According to the wiki (I think?) it says to save precious stones and only use certain kinds for building tables, thrones, etc.

How can I tell which stone is being used for a project?

Also, how can I tell how much of a resource a project takes?

For example, if I want to make a carpenter's shop and only have one stone available.  Why doesn't it say "You need 3x stone to build this building" (or whatever)

When you only have rock, your only option is to make stuff with rock, when you have light stone or dark stone you gain those settable options as well.  I think that is as much as you can customize those, though once the project is done, you will see what type of stone it is made out of.

I believe that masons will automatically use the cheap stone whenever possible.

Bridges and roads seem to require one stone per three spaces.  Most workshops only require one stone, or in some cases stone plus other items; the still requires a barrel, for example.

near as i can tell, you can't make blocks out of light or dark stone. if you don't want those going to misuse, then simply pay attention to what you're using for things.

may still want to be careful with obsidian and dark stone stuff, though.

Just turn all your obsidian to weapons as soon as you get it.  There's no other special use for it, is there?

It's worth 50% more than other dark and light stone (three times as much as regular stone)

What is considered rock?  When digging into the mountain (at the very start of the game), I seem to get several different kinds of rocks and sometimes ore (is that different?).

I also seem to need to create piles for stone, mining, and ore.  Are these three all different I guess?

Mining holds both ore and stone, whereas the other two only hold the named thing. Mining stockpiles are useful when you're excavating a new area, so your dwarves don't have to haul everything to the proper stockpiles

"Rock" is the grey stone.

Ohh... can you give me an example of when I'd use a mining pile?

Also, if I understand correctly, if I have a stone pile and an ore pile, I really don't need a mining pile...?

Mining piles also take gems, but it's easy just to build a small gem pile next to your jeweler.  Gems will go in bins, so they don't neeed much storage space at all.

A mining pile is handy at the very start of the game, just outside your tunnel entrance, as at that point you have no concern over what form of rock is coming out of the mountain -- your goal is to dig, not smelt ore, cut gems, or make dark stone crafts.

After you've gotten a foothold in the mountain, a mining pile is less necessary.  However, it once again becomes useful in the late game with a mining pile deep inside the mountainface because it allows the haulers to daisy-chain the work of extracting the rock from deep in the mountain.  Setting up your mining pile deep inside will have some of your haulers collect the new products of mining while other haulers of yours will ferry rock out of the mining pile to their respective storage locations.

The mining pile also works well as a sort of "overflow", meaning that if your stockpiles for stone, ore, and gems aren't large enough to fully contain all of the things you're extracting from the rock face, it will just be put into a mining pile instead.  This, of course, assumes that your mining pile is farther away than your other stockpiles...
