After some thirteen years, the family lawnmower is breaking down. I can't give an exact year, but here's the information I can give.
It's a Murray Select 22'' (blade) running with a 4.0 HP engine. The engine is of Briggs and Stratton make, gasoline. The oil and gas do not have to be mixed together.
Year-wise, it was bought in 2000, refurbished, for 199.99, around the time where a new model was going for between 219.99 to 239.99.
The blade has finally been busted beyond a simple hammering being able to fix it-though I haven't a home-forge to heat the blade and make it malleable. The blade itself is probably between 20'' and 18''.
The Oil runs through a small filter, sponge-like , pentagonal. The filter is still there, but it is beginning to break down in the front end. Would be good if we could find out where to get another one, instead of waiting until it totally falls apart.

I'll break the pyramid to suggest that you replace your lawnmower with a goat. Have you tried amazon/ebay/insert internet retail site yet?

To be honest I suggested to my father that he bring one of his friends' cows from Gainesville, but the county would not exactly be pleased with a random cow in the area-plus we have no place to put it. As for the poor goat, our current Akita would rip it a new one, period. Actually, the last dog I lost loved eating grass for her stomach-too bad I wasn't allowed to walk her around the house.
Admittedly, I wasn't expecting a miracle-simply hoping for one. Yeah, the model's old, the blade is a large metal blade, definitely not a lightweight metal. Not to mention the filter-I have honestly never seen a filter like this one before. It's not really my job to be looking for these parts-someone else is on it, using their "deal finding" superpower to find anything on the interweb-but it was worth a try.
Also, do spambots actually ASK for stuff as well as put up stupid advertisements? I thought I'd seen most of them by this point, but I guess not! Well, nonetheless, cheers to Bay12's mostly spambot-free health. (I did log on at three in the morning and see one, but only one so far.)

So, uh. Have you checked around your area to see if anyone does work on lawnmowers? That'd probably be my first suggestion... even if you don't want to pay 'em for the work itself, you can usually at least ask 'em about where to find parts and information. I know you can find parts for fairly old mowers (grandparents use at least one that's from the 90s or so, and can still get it fixed up when it breaks), but I'm not sure how easy it is to find 'em online. Ebay and whatnot plus checking with any still-existent manufacturers you can find online would probably be my best suggestion to check with, first.
Especially if you can find a parts manual, you'd be in fairly good shape to start hunting for replacements. Sometimes you can find those online, sometimes not.

Yeah, and can you find parts numbers anywhere? Because that would probably help. I second the lawnmower-fixer person idea, though.

I like how the forum's response to a legitimate (albeit odd) thread that they initially thought was a spambot is to destroy the thread.

When we had to replace the blades on our mower a few months ago, they were available packaged from a hardware warehouse across the road from us. If you can find out the exact model of your mower & google it; it may be as simple as that. No idea about the filter, though.

When my lawnmower broke down we found it was cheaper to buy a used one that works.

Yea i guess. It was the engine and the front axle that broke on mine.

I've got a push mower at home...it's much cheaper, doesn't break as easily, and is good exercise. Much slower, though, and if you want that nice smooth American Dream suburban look you'll want a regular lawnmower. It can be a little uneven, and it makes the lawn look like an actual lawn instead of, you know, a golf course.
