So some resaerchers put up a test to collect data on vocabulary size. You can find it here. (http://testyourvocab.com/)
So, what is your score? I did a respectable 30,000 words (man, this vocabulary get complex), putting me in the top 0,3% of my category (non-native), and in the top 20% for my age among native speakers.
P.S. Just to be clear, you don't have to fill in your data to take the test, your result will just be discarded if you don't.
-
I got 33,400 words. And learned a few more. (Native English speaker). I think maybe I was partially unlucky on some of the really specialized stuff...
-
32,000 words, non-native. I've never heard of some of those words :o
Did know what oneiromancy meant, though.
-
32,900, native speaker. I retook it a few times; the vocabulary is pretty much identical each time, FJ. Probably ~70% of the words I couldn't define off-hand were still recognizable. It would be nice to have a much larger selection that randomizes each time to help account for things which are specific to certain fields of knowledge or literature.
-
I didn't know oneiromancy, but having looked it up, I should have been able to guess it. -mancy as in cartomancy, and onei- as in oniric.
-
I wound up with the minor score of 19200. A relative of mine got 33700 when she took the test.
-
26800 Non-Native. Good enough, I guess?
-
36400, native. Knowing what 'terpsichorean' means has come in useful for once. I also got 'oneiromancy'.
-
32,900, native. Apparantly in the top 10% for my age, so hooray.
-
25,900 words, apparently, non-native.
We had this test before, dunno my previous score.
-
25800, native. I feel pretty terrible about this. :P
Still, most of those words just make you look like a bit of an ass if you use them just about anywhere, and their usage wouldn't be useful for fiction writing (you have to write for an audience, after all) so... I suddenly find that I really don't mind that my vocabulary isn't the largest. At least it's above the median for my age. ::)
Also, first time ever knowing what malapropism means was helpful outside of High School.
-
Your total vocabulary size is estimated to be: 21,200 words
English is the only language I know.
Fuck.
Don't worry, I got 19,500. I guess I have some years to learn... :P
-
o_o
Non-native speaker (with a traumatic past with English >_> <_<)
Your total vocabulary size is estimated to be:
38,600
words
Half of me wants to stuff this in-nevermind. Memory regression.
Still..half of these words in the second part? I categorize them under 'nice to know' because simple = best.
-
33,400 native speaker. That second page had some real tough ones.
-
39,500 - putting me comfortably in the 90th percentile for my age group. That was a lot better than I initially expected, though I suspect my score was boosted as I am a bit of a sesquipedalian.
-
21k.
I'm basically illiterate :P
-
34, 000 words(Native Speaker) witch puts me in the 90th percentile among my age group.
I filled out every thing easily till the last two columns. I only knew around 50% of the penultimate column, and almost none of the last.
-
Where do you find those percentile groups? Are they made and adjusted according to the location you're in?

It says 23,000 words for me. I did skip some where I thought I knew what it meant, but wasn't confident I could use it in a sentence.
-
26,300. Which is sort of disappointing to me. I guess I need to read the dictionary more.
On a side note, that test is a FANTASTIC source for wonderful words that you'll never use in a sentence but when you do people will look askance at you like, "Are you making shit up right now?"
-
Non-native and I got 21 000.

Here (http://freerice.com/#/english-vocabulary/1511) is another great way to learn vocab and do charity at the same time. (The site uses the money it gets from ads to donate rice to starving people. So disable your adblock for that site.)

"Correct! swill = slop"
I have no idea what either of these words mean xD
