Title: Interesting things found in legends mode
Post by: Enemy post on July 29, 2013, 09:57:35 pm
Essentially, interesting/odd/cool stories found in legends mode.
For example, from memory, I saw one goblin who had been captured and enslaved by the demon-lead human civilization, then eventually escaped and was wounded twice more in the future by humans. Finally, she participated in a battle (I think the battle was like 12 people on the goblin side, to 200+ on the human) in which she just went on a rampage, killing numerous humans before finally being shot and killed by the demon ruler of the humans. There was also a goblin who survived having its head ripped by a crocodile.

Not mine, but...
The Elf King of the Dwarves, Cacame Awemedinade Monípalóthi

In a nutshell, Dwarves at war with elves, conquered by dwarves, became a guard at the age of 12, went to war, noted to be "fiercest and deadliest warrior" where his wife died. He tried to ressurect his wife, but he returned riding a zombie wyvern, failing to bring back his wife. He moved too the capital. He then killed a red dragon naked sokrox, with nothing more than competent hammer skill. Later on, he became king.

I saw a wolf demon who had once lead a goblin civ, and eventually was taken captive and and enslaved by a human civ after a defeat. Only a few years later however, it became leader of the human civ and eventually quit I think , going off to wander the wilds.

Some sort of human ranger went on an expedition to tame wild animals every single year for eight years - giant lions and eagles and so on and so on - until he got killed by a hydra. I imagine that in an alternative universe, he managed to tame that too, and just kept on going.

Legends mode, ah how awesome it is.

I probably generated my dream world a week ago. It's pretty normal 65x65 world with evil mountain peak, but what makes it so awesome is the weakness of dwarven civilization. The Blameless Books, dwarven civilization, is located in small southern mountains. It's the only non-evil mountain range in the world. So there was only one starting location for dwarven civ, so it's 1 dwarven civ vs. 5 elven, 5 goblin and 4 human civs.

The Blameless Books was surrounded by the elves. The first hundred years went peacefully - dwarven dynasties were long-lived and they waged war againts demon-led goblins. They and humans destroyed every goblin settlement from the eastern part of the world. In the west there was still a great valley with full of towers. Humans had formed great empires, covering 2/3 of the world. They ruled the great plains of the north, while elves had the forests of the south. Nobody dared to go to the cursed mountains. Dwarven mountains rose from the elven forests.

Elves, apparently, didn't like non-elves. First, they destroyed a human civ that tried to colonize the forests. They attacked dwarves, too, but lost the battle with massive casualties. But it was the end of golden age of Blameless Books.

The king died, killed by hydra, and his son become the monarch. This new king, however, didn't admire traditions much. He cursed the Dwarven Gods and profaned the temple. He accused the gods for helping the elves and killing his father. He was cursed.

Then begun the downfall of the dwarves. The elves declared war on them and quickly crushed dwarven armies with sheer numbers. Massive armies of elves raided the mountain halls. The vampire king fled. New king died.

Elves pillaged the halls again and again - they crushed every dwarven army with massive numbers of elephant- and bobcat-riding elves. There was just too much of them and too few dwarves. They couldn't destroy the mountain halls, but they raided them. They killed the king every single year. And still dwarves kept electing a new king. And so went whole 4th century. There was sometimes short peace treaties, but they didn't last. Elves wanted to drive the dwarves extinct. They even made alliance with goblins, who also begun toi raid the halls.

As we are speaking, the population of the Blameless Books is about 50. Those lone scavanger dwarves live in the ruins of once great mountain halls. But they won't surrender. They won't surrender as long as mountains are still at their side.

Of course, we have Cacame, and unless I am mistaken before him the legend of Tholtig Cryptbrain (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=42702.0)

Some of my own:

Legend discovered in fort mode of a brutal duel between an ordinary elf and an elf-raised-goblin.  For bonus points this was first discovered as decoration on an artifact wooden ring

Zom, the Gila Monster Monster, took over a human civilization and then preceded to sit in the fortress of Cavernshadow and... write books.  A couple early entries were about the underworld (Including "Pathways to the Underworld"), but the vast majority were about Zom, Cavernshadow, The Sun (one of Zom's spheres), or some combination of the three, producing such titles as "Cavernshadow", what I assume is its sequel "More Cavernshadow", "The Sun: Natural or Supernatural?", and "Can the Law-Giver Save The World?".  That's it -- All Zom did was write books, store books (eventually writing books about book storage), and create positions "as a matter of course".

There was a Cave Fish Man Vampire that fell in and out of power over a human civ, escaping defeat at the hands of the dwarves (led by their own Vampire King), only to re-emerge as king of the humans again a few years later after a brief interregnum where the Confederacy of Vegetation had no leader.

And this happened...

he ran out of pokeballs when confronting the hydra, didn't he? He's should've known to release some of his giant eagles to fight it, and once the eagles are dead, the hydras all his. *Pokemon theme plays in background

I have a vampire queen in my fort who was the mother of 10 or 12 children at the dawn of time and half the fort consists of her offspring.

In my current fort I've noticed that most of my statues and figurines are of a human named Tolis Dawnfocused, who apparently set out to hunt great beasts in the year of 29.

I figured I'd investigate further, since there weren't any engravings/statues of her doing anything else. It turns out that in the year 10, when she was 5, she was attacked by a thunderbird, and barely managed to escape. For the next several years she wandered about, until she eventually married and had several kids. Then one day, in 29, she figured she would try and hunt down the beast that attacked her. Spoiler alert: she failed. Kind of expected when she's going up against a megabeast.

Wait a minute, one of her kids has a title? Alright, lets see this. Threbe Petsoaked the Squeezing of Cacti. Heh... Anyways, she probably didn't know her mother that well, only being three when she left, but shared her mother's wanderlust, moving from town to town. Eventually, she settled down and married a man named Or Planesbited, and even became the warlord of a human civ. Why is her husband worth mentioning? Simple; one day, her husband became concerned with his own mortality, and left her. He found an apprenticeship with an experienced necromancer, and eventually became a master to another apprentice himself. He then spent years writing books in his tower until my adventurer came along and caved his skull in with one of his own poems. Oops.

Anyways, upon being abandoned by her husband, Threbe became enraged and profaned a temple, earning the ire of the gods and being forced to assume the form of a were-antelope. She spent years terrorizing lands, eating livestock but never successfully killing anyone, despite her best efforts. Until the year 103, where... Oh. She was the one that attacked my fort, and was killed by a recruit that was conscripted just because he was the closest to her at the time. Some warlord she turned out to be, getting killed by an unarmed milker.

There are also a lot of statues of another human, Ol Blazedcrew, who set out to "hunt great beasts", but because that was 2 years before world gen ended, he never actually killed anything outside of a few random animals. Though he did survive an encounter with a Bronze Colossus that left his leg mangled beyond recognition.

There was a town that was apparently raided and sacked by the same organisation over a hundred times in the span of less than 50 or so years, which was pretty depressing :c

Doesn't a ruler creating positions "as a matter of course" repeatedly mean that they were conquering towns?

Maybe it's necromancy to use this thread, but I was reading legends and found a human named Eslo Buttonheart who was attacked by night creatures four times, when he was 1,2,3 and 6 years old. Each time, he was defeated but escaped unscathed. Then he was abducted by a goblin at 8 years old, became a member of the goblin civ and lived a uneventful life.

Well, if we're going to resurrect it, here's something else...today I generated a world that ended up in the Third Age of Myth (yeah, the titans and megabeasts are winning this one so far). In legends, I encountered a few wars between various factions, mostly caused by the elves eating people.

Then I found a titled elf. "Mame Ruledaxes the Short Targets of Sun". Born in 74, died in 123. He fought off the attack of a "crone bridegroom" or something like that, then was enslaved. He escaped, and made a new life for himself as a mason. Then, in the year 123....the peeps who'd enslaved him decided to recapture him as part of the war with the civilisation he'd joined after escaping from them. He wasn't so happy about this.

Sadly only a month later a second army turned up and offed him. Still. This is an elf with relatively low combat history that took two armies to kill him.

Here's an abridged version of his life history. I've cut out a load of kills and even more random eating people to save on space. It's a big image, so I'm spoilering it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I had a little unassuming hamlet that was apparently raided over OVER A HUNDRED TIMES by the same group of people.

Makes me sad just thinking about it :-[

i discovered a yeti which devoured about 100 animals in a single week. hell he must be hungry! then he ate like nothing for around 300 years, then he ate again around 30 animals and died 2 years after of old age, his age was somewhere around 700 years

there was a giant bronzen titan with a kill list of about 600 notable persons. some of the persons he killed where notable for killing one or two other titans, beasts, dragons.
then the titan was wandering around encountering a random elf. the titan got killed by the elf. the elf was unscathed in the encounter. i checked if this elf was maybe some mighty warrior, i discovered that the titan was the first and last kill in the live of this elf. the elf got later killed by some random wild animal.

in year 1 a dwarf named Kikrost Idolsabre from the handle of boars of the furnace of roars becomes the general of the furnace of roars,
in year 2 he marries a dwarf named Melbil Tinbreaches. shortly after he got abducted by a creature of evil. this creature turned him to a spouse of evil. 1 year after the transformation he got killed by his wife Melbil Tinbreaches in an ambush. the wife also killed the creature of evil which transformed him. 2 years after she became the new general of the furnace of roars.
its sad if you think about it. but its a story so plausible it could occur in a fantasy novel, its so cool these things are able to be generated by random  :)

Recently, something strange happened to me in Adventure Mode, but which I was only able to fully understand with Legends Mode.

Entering a town called Bindeagle for the first time with a fresh adventurer (a human female named Lershi Ceruslenshi (yes, "Bottledskunk")), I talked to a goblin and found that I could Report Success/Spread News, which was weird because I hadn't killed anyone at all at that point. Apparently my adventurer took credit for killing two people she had never even seen (although they were probably visible through a sewer grate or something). Later, after earning some kills in the city dungeon, she visited a temple and randomly accused the "first flier," a goblin, of being a Night Creature. It wasn't exactly the smartest thing to do, but it turned out the goblin was a vampire, so my adventurer ran to the city walls to collect some help to take it down. On her way, she passed through a shop—and into a murder scene. Some random pikedwarf was slaughtering a shop full of dwarves, including one soldier dwarf (the city was mostly dwarves, with some goblins, and very few humans, even though the town belonged to a human civ). After the rogue pikedwarf was dead, my adventurer combed through the murder scene, looking for clues about its motivation. Being the incredible detective that she was, she noted that the dwarf's pike listed a human kill, but she could not find a human body anywhere nearby. After killing the vampire, she made the mistake of trying to deposit the bodies of the shop massacre victims in the city catacombs, which, okay, I was not expecting a mummy such a short way away from the surface, nor did I expect my adventurer to dodge the mummy's attacks by jumping down a Z-level straight into the mummy. It was ridiculous, but now at least I could check out Legends Mode. At first I assumed that the rogue pikedwarf was a minion of the vampire goblin, because they were the only two denizens of the city that I had seen with human bone/teeth jewelry, but when I checked Legends Mode it got much more interesting.

The chain of events, as near as I can reconstruct it, goes like this:

*When Lershi (adventurer) entered Bindeagle, she claimed responsibility for the deaths of Athra and Naspa.

*Naspa and Athra were members of The Geese of Helping, a criminal gang with a feel-good name. Naspa, an elf, was its leader up until her death. Athra, a human, was a mook.

*Naspa and Athra were killed by Tawki and Uthra, dwarven members of The League of Reigns, another criminal gang. In fact, The League of Reigns was the most prominent gang in Bindeagle.

*Tawki was killed by Bemta, a Goose of Helping, but that chain of events cuts off.
*Uthra was killed by Lasiv, a human Goose of Helping.

*Lasiv was killed by Erod, a pikedwarf and a member of The League of Reigns.

So far it's a straightforward gang war, all happening beneath my adventurer's feet as she enters the city (I presume). For whatever reason, the fight that originally took place on the South side of the city migrated to the North side, which is where Dothan comes in.

*Dothan becomes an enemy of the League of Reigns and Erod kills Dothan, Semod (Dothan's wife), and four anonymous dwarves.

*Erod is killed by Lershi.

Why Dothan? I have no idea what he did to piss The League of Reigns off. Probably he just happened to be near Erod at the time. However, his backstory provides some clues.

Dothan was a gemsetter who had lived in Bindeagle since around the beginning of the third century. He may have been the soldier dwarf I found dead—it was the only soldier in the entire city that I had seen wearing armor, oddly enough—but I'm not sure. I am sure, however, that he participated in an attack on a Dark Fortress, Growledwitches, where he killed a troll, and that he killed two criminals in two other towns in the same civilization (Rereomon). Nac Admiredair, an overlord of some bandit group, was killed by Dothan in Kegtempt. Tadin Bowmagic, a criminal in Reinmint, had his right eye pulled out by Dothan before Dothan struck him down.

This opens up a whole new way to look at events. The slaughter in the shop now reads as a mafia-style hit, a massacre to intimidate vigilantes and law enforcers, orchestrated by the vicious League of Reigns. Quite frankly, it's pretty darn cool that all of this happened while I was doing my own thing with my adventurer, and that I was able to cross paths with something happening more or less independent of my own actions.

But wait, there's more!

*After killing the vampire priestess, Zin Thamopra, who had profaned the temple of the strength-goddess Lecit three years prior in 247, Lershi Bottledskunk the Sprayed Decline of Bodies took the body of Semod to The Massive Sanctuary, the city catacombs.

*There, Lershi awakened the mummy of Irud Akanbengel, a Law-Giver of Rereomon who had died in 215. Her three soldier companions were killed and Semod was reanimated by Irud.

*Lershi was killed by Irud after foolishly dodging an attack by jumping down a ramp and straight into Irud.

*Lershi was reanimated by Irud.

Visiting the scene later with a demigod adventurer, I found Lershi's backpack and weapons and Irud's right hand lying on the ground just outside the entrance to the catacombs. Weird; I had no idea Irud's hand had been cut off. I wonder if Lershi did it, or if one of the soldiers did it and it was moved by [arglebargle forces]?

interesting story, really nice!

What happened next with Melbil?
thats very epic what happened next. i forgot about that. she got herself ambushed in the same year by a creature of evil. but she fought well and killed that creature too! then, few months later, she made a  a journey to the depths of the world and im sure because she was driven by hatred and the desire for revenge with eternal grim bitterness deep in her heart. she tamed the rutheres of the underworld and then she returned to the savage fields, thats the place where she was hunting forgotten beasts before she married her husband. (i forgot to mention that too!) there she encountered a cyclops, sadly that marks the end of her story, im sure she fought well, but in the end she got struck down by the cyclops. she was a great warrior with 31 kills. 9 of them where giant animals.

Roduk Twilightdismal was a cave fish man born in 232 who profaned a temple in 265, becoming a vampire. in 327 he aroused general suspicion by appearing not to age and a murder. He responded by attacking the human law-giver and taking over the nation. Later that year he aroused suspicion again and laid a series of oppressive edicts upon the population. He spent the next 706 years joining and promptly leaving various religions, starting a cult around himself, and starting wars with other nations. He has 15888 kills personally, mostly his own people. Also, before becoming law-giver he was a criminal warlord, right up until his coup.

The two most interesting things in the worldgen I encountered were

Dwarven monarch being elven werebeast (became one during elf's rule, if I remember well... and got subsequently removed from the position).

Dwarven queen who was 12 years old. (just became adult, got elected, at  which point the worldgen stopped)

Coincidence. There was only one necromancer tower in the world, so the chances of me not killing him in the pursuit of the secrets of life and death were slim.

I hadn't actually checked legends mode until losing two forts after retiring my adventurer.

Hear the story of Datan Natureboulders.

The two youngest of his seven children immigrated to my fort, Wirejade: Urdim Laboredbristle, a bone carver, who most likely ended up slain by clowns, and Ingiz Scouredmachine, who became the first melee weaponlord in the fort, received the title of the Umbral Omen of Trade and kept on fighting and training even though a Forgotten Beast tore off his right arm. Urdim and Ingiz were born in 53 and 54 respectively, and have (or had) five more siblings. Datan became a general of the Whip of Beaches in 92. However, in the early autumn of 121 Ber the Sweltering Spine, the kea god of volcanoes and mountains, cursed him to become a werehedgehog. He did the same thing to two queens of the Whip of Beaches before. I guess there is a reason Ingiz doesn't worship any gods. Later on, Datan arrived at Wirejade, and I had him killed, knowing nothing about his past.

Great thread!

Was considering making something like this myself.

I was taking orders from a deity named Mukca for awhile, completing quests.

Until i randomly looked into legends and found out he was a lizard demon (i was looking for dragons to slay, found him accidently) that breathes fire pretending to be a god.

It started in the year 2 and proceeded to  write books for 200+ years, currently in the year 218 and its still alive and writing books.

Reminded me of david icke rofl.

I've been waiting for a chance to tell this story to someone (though it's been long enough that I've forgotten the awesome narrative I had planned out, so please forgive the quality).  What follows is the tragic history of one of my marksdorfs (whom I made captain after I learned all this), Bomrek Olinrimtar.

As a child, Bomrek was abducted by a goblin.  Shortly thereafter his captor kidnapped another dwarf, Momuz, and the two became friends.  Many years later the two finally obtained their freedom, and they went their separate ways.  Momuz settled in a small dwarven outpost and became a farmer.  Two years later, he was reunited with his parents when they fled their old hometown due to a goblin raid.  Driven by a sense of duty, he became a ranger; the next year he joined in his civilization's retaliatory strike.  The target was the goblin civilization's largest fortress, and the attackers were outnumbered two-to-one.  Many dwarves had already died by the time the goblin's general came out.  Knowing that the one responsible for his family's pain was upon the battlefield, Bomrek charged forward, killing nine goblins before reaching their leader.  However, once he laid eyes upon that monster Bomrek froze, for what he saw was not a filthy goblin, but... a friend.  It was Momuz, the kind dwarf with whom he grew up.  Bomrek wondered what could have happened to Momuz, and who could have been responsible for his actions.  But he knew it didn't matter.  What stood before him was not a dwarf, but an enemy.  And so Bomrek struck down Momuz.  Afterwards Bomrek returned to life as a farmer, and later emigrated to the glorious fortress WorthyBoulder, where he was, begrudgingly, drafted into the militia and quickly rose to the highest ranks [note: interestingly, before becoming an elite marksdorf the "irritated by the draft" and "long patrol duty" thoughts had him in a perpetually shitty mood, with far lower happiness than any of my other soldiers].

Though Bomrek would never learn of Momuz's life between their separation and fateful encounter, history did:  After escaping from GoblinCiv1, he joined GoblinCiv2.  He killed their general and took that position for himself.  With his newfound power he avenged his and Bomrek's pain and obliterated GoblinCiv1, leaving not a soul alive.  However, with this power came responsibility-- responsibility towards those he led.  GoblinCiv2 had been in a perpetual state of war with the neighboring dwarven civilization for decades, and Momuz couldn't change this.  Perhaps feeling a tinge of guilt, he chose to attack only a small outpost and brought only a very small force [note:this force really was about an order of magnitude smaller than any of GoblinCiv2's other recent attacks].  Ironically, this choice is what led him to damnation.

Not from vanilla gameplay, but it was an interesting turn of events none the less. The result of modding a barbaric war-mongering race of beast-men named trollocks. I set the population to be 50% bandits at any given time, which ended up meaning that right at the start of worldgen, 50% of the race began as bandits. More interesting, as the 50% that remained had children, those children turned to banditry.

The general lifespan of any random trollock played out as so, edited for the sake of ease to read:

"So and So" was a trollock. "So and So" was one of the first of their kind.
In the year 1, "So and So" gave birth to the trollock "Firstborn Son of So and So".
In the year 6, "So and So" was murdered by the trollock "Firstborn Son of So and So".

Yeah. The race died out very early in worldgen because everyone was being killed by one another. Even the parents got killed by their own children. In fact, most of them got killed by their children. That was an unforeseen consequence, and it was pretty great to see. Totally not intended, and I had to tweak the race so they'd survive longer than the first 25 years, but still funny to see that play out on it's own in the DF engine.

I recently generated a map over the course of five hundred years, and in that time, humans managed to capture an elven forest retreat, while the dwarves managed to capture a human fort, giving them an actual physical presence in adventure mode.

I had been attempting to mod in a race of fairly friendly, peace-loving gnomes (who, unlike other gnomes, could actually speak). However, upon searching through legends, it appeared that they had been involved in a war against the goblins, which lasted over 100 years. During this time, they pillaged the same location over 50 times, and slaugtered countless goblins, and never once lost a battle against them.

Oh, and there was a necromancer gnome, whose last name was "Slaughterfriends".

And they were supposed to be peaceful!

To be fair, the goblins would see a peace loving race as pillage bait. Kind of hard to be a truly peaceful race with such warmongers like the goblins around.

I'm not sure how common it is, but one of the last worlds I generated almost every faction leader was a Vampire. Every Dwarf and Human Civ had a Vampire Monarch, and there was about 8 of both.

I found the Legend history very interesting.  The First Dwarf Civilization in my current game was founded by a Vampire Dwarf.  In fact there seem to be a lot of vampires and Evil Humans in my history.  It got very confusing as Evil Humans were fighting wars against Elves and every once and awhile Dwarfs would ally themselves to both sides in some of the wars.  In one war there were Dwarfs and Goblins fighting Dwarfs and Goblins....all very confusing.  I am not even sure how that works...

I know the races have different ideas about how to handle the dead and to treat animals and such, but I just can't figure out how the Dwarfs got split into two like that.  Was one side ruled by Goblins and the other side ruled by Dwarfs?

In one of my fortresses, I noticed that my dwarves very often engraved their goods with images of the human "Tul Foggygrasp" being struck down by the alligator "Bandedkeys". It came up so often that I copied the save to look at legends mode and see who this person was. It turned out that Foggygrasp was an adventurer I had played long ago and forgotten about! Her adventure was short: I ran out of water after leaving the starting town, and was dismembered by an alligator when I went to fill my skein at a nearby river. It was such a brief and inconsequential journey, to me, but for some reason my dwarves fell in love with it. It was like the game was mocking my failure.

That fort went on for decades, and they never stopped telling the story of foolish Tul Foggygrasp and the hungry alligator, Bandedkeys.

My guess would be that the goblins conquering dwarf sites and kidnapping their kids resulted in the goblin civ having a large dwarf population.

I once saw a goblin who was born in a site occupied by dwarves and eventually rose to be that sites administrator. The site was then taken over by elves and his family eaten, but he was imprisoned. Somehow (I never found out - didn't say. Maybe he escaped?) he wound up in one of the last goblin civs and married a snatcher. He then led a raid that took back his home, but everyone in the tribe but him ended up dying.
He was still alive at the end of worldgen - he just sits in the dark fortress he once ruled and fights off sieges.

Take a minute to think about how awesome that is. A goblin rises peacefully through the ranks until the harsh violence of the world destroys his life. He then gets back in touch with his roots and finds love, before trying to take revenge - only to find that once again violence takes everything from him. He then proceeds to several last stands, refusing to let anyone take the ruin that was his city.

It's like a tragic action movie.

Title: Re: Interesting things found in legends mode
Post by: Enemy post on May 12, 2014, 08:02:24 pm
You mean this story?
Yonali Smithwings
The greatest general who ever lived

Yonali was born in 49. She was the eldest child of Inevi Mistcarnage and Alino Coupleman. Her parents were clothes-makers, weavers, and woodcrafters. She helped run the shop as a trader with her siblings.

But her life changed when the current princess, Thilu Chancestyled, became queen in 62, and Yonali was chosen for the position. At the time, the position was relatively boring, as The Skin of Lions, her civilization, had not been at war with anyone since 24 and no elf had ever died as a princess.  The position was only where you waited to become queen. But in 64, tragedy struck as Thilu was abducted by a night creature and changed into one of them. Instead of becoming queen, Yonali chose to put Afe Delightgrowths, a daughter of a previous queen, on the throne. Afe still remains on the throne today.

In 65 Yonali married Inefa Motherpaint, an herbalist, and together they had 8 children. Sadly, 2 of them were lost to night creatures, and 2 were lost to a bronze colossus. Her eldest son Rayeli married in 88 and his wife had Yonali’s first grandchild, Nemo. She married in 95 and had Yonali’s first great-grandchild, Emima. She married in 109 and had Yonali’s first great-great-grandchild, Cata. She married in 122 and had Yonali’s first great-great-great-grandchild, Itha. She married in 135 and had Yonali’s first great-great-great-great-grandchild, Sareve. Truly, elves breed quickly.

Then, tragedy struck in 137 when her husband Inefa was lost to another night creature, and her brother Mawada was killed trying to kill a minotaur. This made a huge change in Yonali. She wanted blood. She wanted someone to pay. But the night creature had vanished like smoke, and she had no outlet for her rage. She began amassing a huge standing army, while honing her own skills. She was helped by the druid, Yarare Skirtfords, who had been in the army for a long time.

In the late autumn of 147 she declared war on The Prestigious Letter, a small dwarven civilization close to the north. Her army, now 7000 strong, completely destroyed the dwarves' small settlement of 500. They didn't go down without a fight, though - every dwarf took at least three elves with them. That night, the elves feasted on the flesh of the treekillers, and their whole civilization rejoiced with them. The army's ranks swelled with new recruits drawn in by the promise of fresh meat. Among the recruits were her own mother, sister, firstborn, daughter, son, and many other family members. They would stay with her throughout her conquests.

But the dwarves would not stand to be slaughtered. They sent an army of 800 toward a tiny forest retreat near their mountains. Yonali met them halfway, and the battle claimed half the dwarves but only a small fraction of the elves. Her men pressed toward the retreating army, and eventually caught up to them at a dwarven mountainhome. There they killed the rest of the army, and all within. Yonali pressed on, destroying another mountain hall. She lost about 2100 men, while the dwarves lost 800. More recruits came, but not many; however, one recruit was her youngest child, and another her queen. By this point almost her whole family except for her father and a few others were part of her army. He stayed back at home and carried on the family business with the help of a hoard of his now-grown many-great-grandchildren.

Then she came upon the great fortress Churchwheel, sparsely defended by only 300 dwarves. But this was no ordinary fortress, and no ordinary dwarves. This was the Mountainhome itself, the pride of The Prestigious Letter, last bastion of dwarfkind, and manned by well-trained men. Yonali lost almost 3000 men taking the fortress, charging uphill toward heavy crossbow-fire, being sliced apart by traps, forced to fight one-on-one underground in tight hallways against berserkers. After the battle was won and all the dwarves were slain, Yonali and her army celebrated over the spoils of war. This was the Mountainhome after all, and its treasures were innumerable. They had conquered the dwarves utterly, and now the only dwarves remaining in the world were enslaved to various other civilizations.

But the elves' bloodlust was not yet appeased. Yonali and her army marched back through their country and attacked The Empire of Bars, their human neighbors to the south. They attacked one hamlet, killed 3000 humans and took 4000 losses, danced amid the ashes, and walked home to nurse their wounded and mourn their dead. Yonali returned to her life of training and raising her children.

After 12 years of inactivity, Yonali began to itch for the battle field once more. She once again declared war on their southern neighbors. But the humans were ready, and had positioned their army on the outskirts of their territory.  The two armies met in a large hamlet. Her army, numbering 5500, lost 4000 while the enemy, numbering 3500, was completely obliterated. Yonali also made her first actual kill during the battle when a small group of elite soldiers fought their way through the elven ranks to kill her. After the battle, the elves feasted on the flesh of the humans they had slain and buried their dead. The army went home after the humans begged for peace.

But the peace did not last. During the short peace, a new law-giver came to power over the Empire of Bars. Unlike the last law-giver, she was an extreme religious. Her missionaries came over into The Skin of Lions, trying to convert elves to her religion. They were largely unsuccessful, but the few elves that changed deities were soon chased out of the country.

Yonali and the humans fought another war 11 years later in 171. But the humans were feeling scared. Their population was shrinking rapidly, and their villages destroyed one by one. But the elves were enjoying themselves. Fresh meat and all the loot you can carry! The population wasn’t even shrinking, due to the size of The Skin of Lions. They trusted in Yonali, and her amazing reputation. After all, who will oppose you if you kill the enemies’ generals? By this point, the core of Yonali’s army was battle-hardened, experienced veterans. Most had been with her since the dwarven wars. All the dying was being done by the new soldiers.

Yonali fought the humans again in 182. This battle was different. In this battle, elves fought elves. All the enemy were slain as usual, but the elves found it unnerving to have to kill their own brethren. What could be so good about their religion that they would fight against their former countrymen? Even Yonali was not unaffected.

Yonali felt the itch for battle once more in late 192. She led her army down again, and conquered the waiting army. But this time she ignored the stuck-up law-giver’s pleas for peace. She kept conquering, and took the entire region with less than a hundred casualties in total, while slaying more than 11000 humans. Yonali claimed the region as a vassal state of The Skin of Lions and returned home victorious.

In 203 Yonali learned that the dwarves still lived. They had crawled out of their holes in the ground and began rebuilding out of sight. Yonali and her army crushed all four mountain halls with ease and distain. The dwarves were once again no more.

In late 204 queen Afe summoned Yonali to her court. At this point Yonali was a global legend, victor of 47 battles. Afe told Yonali about the encroaching goblin threat. They were led by a demon and rapidly expanding. They had already taken over the land the dwarves had left vacant after their defeat, and were looking for more room to grow. Yonali was ordered to put her skills to the test and conquer the goblin nation.

Yonali launched her attack in the spring of 205. Her army of nearly 8000 marched across the plain toward a small goblin fort. Yonali signaled the attack from her war elephant. But the goblins were ready. They had an army of over 3000, headed by the demon Liwa Boggorged the Ruthlessness of Bristling. The two armies collided with a roar.

Yonali shouted orders left and right. Liwa waded through the elven army, spitting webs at any elves who came to close. The lizard demon wielded a great iron axe the size of a small tree, and he bisected elves with every swing. Swords, spears, and arrows bounced off his scaly hide.
“I’M COMING FOR YOU, GENERAL!” he roared over the din of battle.
“I’d like to see you try!” Yonali shouted back. Liwa jumped the last thirty feet before Yonali’s elephant, roaring in anger. He swung his axe in a wide circle, aiming straight for Yonali. She jumped from the elephant’s back, landing on the ground with an acrobatic roll. She knew she couldn’t possibly take Liwa head on, but she could dodge his attacks and try to stay alive. She successfully evaded Liwa for a full ten minutes, during which time the entire goblin force was defeated. This left Liwa and Yonali in the center of an elven army of 4000. One of Yonali’s rolls took her into a patch of webs, sticking her fast.
“I HAVE YOU NOW, LITTLE ELF!” Liwa roared. He swung his axe around, aiming for Yonali. She raised her sword and shield to try to block the blow—

The axe cleaved through sword, shield and body alike.

The elven attack redoubled, tears streaming from their eyes. They threw themselves against the demon, hoping to overwhelm him with sheer numbers. But it was all in vain. Eventually, an old swordself named Liceyi Coastmatches called for a retreat. They could not defeat such a monster. She and the remains of the army fled from the battlefield, carrying with them Yonali’s body. They buried her in the capitol under the central tree, surrounded by the family members that survived the battle. Among the dead were Yonali’s mother and eldest child, along with the druid. Only 1500 men had survived the battle.

Liceyi became the new princess. She was the descendant of a queen, and had been with Yonali since her first battle. She made peace with the goblins. In 210 the elf Cethire Cageadore slew the plains titan Iger Oakensinks the Fog of Beaches, passing the world into the Golden Age.

Wishing to continue the legacy of Yonali, Liceyi declared war on the humans on the continent to the west in 217. She led her army of over 9000 against the humans’ army of 6500. She was killed in the attack, taking more than 6000 casualties while only killing 4000 of the enemy. The army retreated in shame.

Amayi Earthenuttered became the next princess, and had been with Yonali since her conquest of The Empire of Bars. Embittered by the elves’ loss, in 228 she declared war once again on the humans to the west, and led her massive army of 11000 against the humans’ army of 6400. She was driven back after taking nearly 8000 losses. However, only 150 men were left from the opposing army. Amayi forged a peace with the humans that lasts to this day.

Turning her anger south, Amayi attacked the Empire of Bars in 239. She led her army of 9000 against the humans’ army of 3600. Her army suffered nearly 5000 losses while only inflicting 2700 on the enemy. She was forced to give back all the occupied towns in the peace treaty. Sad and angry, Amayi led the army home and declared that there would be no more wars. She simply could not hope to match the accomplishments of Yonali Smithwings, the greatest general who ever lived.

Yeah, at first I thought it was an elven thing, but looking at a lot more legends battles, it seems to be an attacker's thing. I've seen far worse losses from attacking armies, especially when the defenders are the last of a civilization of goblins. Even if you outnumber the enemy 10 to 1, its still not a good idea to attack an army composed entirely of weapon lords. Besides, Yonali's successors did much worse than she did on the casualties front.

Also, thanks. I really enjoyed writing it but it just sort of died after I posted it.

Genned a new world with a 125 year history. In the last five years two wars occured. The second was between goblins and elves, and the elves lost. The first was between humans and goblins surviving humans:395, surviving goblins:1.

Looked into it more, and found that the survivor had been a demon, and in the period of about two years gained 749 notable kills, and has over one thousand other kills :O. I generally get far less interesting worlds.

Going to see what else happened.

Once I had a world where the last surviving member of a goblin civ was a demon hanging out in a captured fortress. It fended off 2 dwarven, 1 elven, 1 impish, and 2 human sieges before finally succumbing to one last human siege. It was killed by an unnamed human. The demon had 23,000 kills at death.

I have several 'last left' people in a new world I generated.

First one is Id Anguishedarrow. He is a dwarven vampire and king of the Wire of Depressions. He is the only one of his civ.

Next are Iyathi Cherisheddabbled and Salo Punchprairies. Iyathi is the queen of the Large Glade and Salo is her subject. Salo wanders the wilds. They are also the only ones.

All three are former captives of a demon civ called the Wickedness of Masters.

There was one Tura Cangoramkal, a human, who became law-giver of Anthath Sedme (The Confederation of Murk) at just age 31. She forewent marriage in order to fully dedicate her life to her country, and in its short-lived history, Tura's 46-year-reign lasted longer than any of her predecessors. Much of it was spent taking on the confederation's mortal enemies from Anthath Eri (The Confederation of Magic). In 6 skirmishes with their nasty neighbours, Tura built quite an impressive killcount.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Tura had brought 272 of her foes to the blade, and her achievemenents in battle lead to her enemies dubbing her The Superior Grip-Pits of Lathering. A name that surely struck fear into many hearts.

History had portrayed Tura as an active leader who slayed all comers. History also forgot to say that Tura was quite terrible at this leading business.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not a single person who joined Tura in battle lived to tell the tale. Through her worship to Cadap Palathluto, the god of Gambling, it may be assumed that her strategies did not involve a lot of self-preservation. It's a miracle she managed to escape so many battles with her own life intact.

Nevertheless, Tura managed to slaughter hundreds in the name of Anthath Sedme, and in this world of war and bloodshed, her prowess in battle is all she needs to be remembered for.

---

I really love legends mode. There's so many neat little stories you can uncover for a single person.

Found a dwarf named Logem Wheelhermit. He was one of the first of his kind. He began wandering the wilds in Year 11 of the world. He wandered for 8 years. In that time he fought with 4 different night trolls, and each time he was defeated but"escaped unscathed".

He settled in the mountain halls of Sunkenfences for a year before wandering the wilds again in year 20. He fought with several more night trolls, but he neither killed any nor was he injured. Then, while wandering, in the early spring of 28, Logem fought the one eyed freak Zustop Shadowdied. The one eyed freak smashed Logem's right eye. Logem escaped, but he was turned into a one eyed dwarf by a one eyed freak. How fitting. He fought a roc while wandering in year 30, but he was unable to kill it. He smashed the roc's leg open, but had to retreat despite the roc's wounds. He continues wandering for a while, but is unable to kill anything. The closest he got was injuring a roc.

Logem doesn't seem cut out for glory and adventure. He settles in Minestangled in year 39, with 27 years of wandering under his belt, and no kills. He becomes a thresher while in Minestangled, presumably he settles down to farming life. Then, in year 45, after 6 years of peaceful life as a thresher, he begins worshipping Egul, the dwarven goddess of law, and he becomes a member of The Order of Law. He promptly starts adventuring again, and begins wandering the wilds.

Suddenly, Logem's abilities seem to pick up. He wanders for 15 years before confronting the gloom woman Mondul Skullstomb the Crypts Ash of Shadows in year 60. He strikes the night troll down. In year 61 he confronts the troll of twilight Zitha. He strikes the night troll down. In year 63 he confronts the midnight ogress Meli. He rips of the night troll's right arm before he then shoots and kills it. In year 64 he confronts the winged creature Osod Buriedskull, who he shoots and kills.

After this sudden killing spree he wanders for another 23 uneventful years before dying of old age in the wilds. He lived in civilization for 7 years of his life, and wandered the wilds for a total of 80 years, and wandered alone up until he died of old age as a decrepit old dwarf. He was an ardent worshipper of Egul at the time of his death, and had killed 4 night creatures. He died with the title of Logem Wheeledhermit the Incinerated Reign.

So, he's a godless and unremarkable wannabe ranger wandering the lands alone, who settles down and tries to live a peaceful life as a farmer after losing his eye to one of the beasts he tried so hard and failed to fight. For 27 years he was picking fights with these night creatures, and he was always outmatched. Then he starts worshipping Egul, and suddenly he's killing night creatures with ease. It's almost as if he became a born-again worshipper and zealous dwarf paladin of Egul, spreading law and order in the name of Egul to the chaotic night creatures of the lands, and taking vengeance for his lost eye.

15 artifact books in my world. The only artifacts that exist, are books.
One of them quite struck my fancy, i must be honest.. Partly due to the title and contents, but also the author who must have had a lot of personal 'experience' in the subject matter..

"Could it be The Darkness?" was a legendary chrysoberyl-bound book. The written portion consists of a 19 page essay entitled "Could it be The Darkness?".
Authored by Sunir the Minion of Moles, it concerns the cave "Thronecave the Entrance of Seduction", the writing is as vicious as can be.
In the late autumn of 26, "Could it be The Darkness?" was created in Anguisheddrum by the eyeless monster Zutosp.

Legends Mode is the most amazing thing I have ever encountered in any game, ever. I can't believe the narratives it can generate. Here's all the neat stuff from the ONE world I've generated, called the Dimension of Souls. Sorry for wall of text.

250 years, average settings on everything, 2 of each type of Empire: Dwarf, Elf, Human and Goblin. All still standing at the end of worldgen.

Hellchewed the City of Assassins

Hellchewed is the biggest city in the world, by a wide margin; there are over ten thousand goblins there, five times more then any other city; but it is decadent and corrupt, apparently. The most interesting part is its population of 232 Abducted Elves who spend all their time murdering (or as I like to think, assassinating) everyone, including each other.

I say "assassinate" because of this: The first Ruler of this Goblin Civilization was a male black brute Demon, who was murdered by an Elf abductee named Mina Dreampack. A different Elf replaced the Demon as ruler for one year before he was ousted (but not killed in the battle) by the female black brute Demon. She was then murdered by a Dwarf abductee, who was then murdered by an elf, who likewise was murdered by another dwarf, then finally another elf, who is the current ruler.

And remember the first Elf assassin, Mina Dreampack? She ended up being the first death in a eight person long chain of elf-on-elf murder. Talk about intrigue!

The Titan and the Queen

Ozob Sunkwaxed was a Hill Giant who terrorized the Human civilization in the north, the Grand Union, for 140 years. He ranked up 71 notables and 17 rampages total before finally being put down by some Dwarf. However, on his very first rampage of Graniteflowers, in year 3, he killed the queen of the Grand Union. Her successor was called Pimra Washbeauty.

Four years later, the Titan returned for a second rampage and killed two of her infant sons, while Pimra herself was unable to defeat him and escaped, despite the help from a random heroic Kobold (the only Kobold that I ever saw that did anything in my world, and he also lived) and two other notable humans. In 14, he killed another of her children in a different city.  In 20, he returned to Graniteflowers again and killed two more of her children. One of the surviving daughters also began to worship him.

After his Fourth Rampage in Graniteflowers, Pimra herself began to worship him, I assume in some kind of insane Lady MacBeth obsession. In his 5th rampage, he killed another of her children. Finally, in his 6th and final rampage of that city, he killed Pimra herself as well as another child.

As a final tragedy, another of Pimra's sons died to Ozob in 81 after fighting him once and escaping in 74, long after he had left the Graniteflowers area.

However... remember the daughter of Pimra that began to worship Ozob? Her name was Acath Bearpeaked. She succeeded Pimra as Queen of the Grand Union, and died of old age in at 119 years old. She never had any children.

Sut Hatedcrypt the Terrors of Evil, and his reign of Terrifying Evil

Sut the Demon Fox is what got me interested in Legends mode to begin with. I was looking through the list of historical figures starting with the first created. Legends mode is hard to read, so I was just skimming the entries...until I got to Sut.

His entry was over ten times as long as anyone else I had seen. All kills.

Through further research, I found out that Sut had killed the Goblin king in year 3 (of the second Goblin empire, all the way across the world from the first), and became law giver for about 80 years. At around 74, the biggest war of the world started, between one of the Dwarf Empires and Sut's Empire. The Dwarves won twenty battles in a row under their mighty general, Oddom Cobaltlegends. However, in year 81, the Humans from the Nation of Strife (I'll get to them in a minute) got slaughtered in a one battle war at the Goblin capital city. Sut won nearly singlehandedly, but they somehow captured him anyways, since he wasn't the one "leading the assault". As a result, Sut was ousted from Leadership, even though he almost immediately escaped and came back to the goblin capital.

This was the worst thing that could have happened for the Dwarves. The final battle of that long war came in 84. Sut was now the general and killed 360 of the 419 attackers, including Oddom Cobaltlegends as well as the Queen of that Dwarven Empire, who was also there.

Over the next 150 years Sut fought and won every attack that was lead against his empire, mostly by himself. He killed two more Dwarven kings and racked up over 538 notable kills and 2271 others, from both the Dwarf and Human Empires flanking his civilization. No other character has even close to this number of kills in my game.

And yet...his death was as ignominious as his life was legendary. In 242, Sut was murdered, just murdered, by a random abducted Dwarf in his home city that he had ruled and defended for over 240 years.

Her name was Xuspgas Citydooms, and she came from a line of abducted dwarves that had fought under Sut's leadership for years. There was nothing else notable about her that I could find.

(Yes, I know he's no Tholtig Cryptbrain but I didn't know about her when I first found this guy)

One Final Story

The Nation of Strife is a Human nation on the west coast of my world. It has been ruled by a Demon (the female fox demon, actually) pretending to be their Diety of death, Quazi.

Zemel Spreadhero is a female human necromancer, the only one in this world, who received her powers from Quazi directly. She is also ex-Nation of Strife, so she might be the only one who knows the truth about the Demon ruler.

Zemel is also apparently a Pulitzer-prize winning author. 15 artifacts existed in the world after worldgen, 1 being the tablet granted to Zemel for her powers and the other 14 are books written by Zemel.

10 books are about Zemel, her coven, her structures or her other books.
3 books are about a region called the Hill of Adventuring, a large region in the north where over eight thousand characters and over a thousand notables have died, over the course of five battles and uncountable duels.

And one was about someone named Mimale ReleasedSquid. I had no idea who that was, so I looked her up.

She was the daughter of the first Druid of one of the Elf nations. Her mother was killed by a troll and her father by our titan buddy, Ozob. She was attacked by a night horror when she was eight, but escaped. Then she was abducted at 11 and had to grow up in a Goblin city, far from her family, until she was finally pressed into service and died in battle versus Humans in the Hill of Adventuring.

Even the authors IN THE GAME write about interesting events! Mind = Blown

And I could go on! About the first king of the Nation of Strife who lasted three years before turning into a were-goat and rampaged for another 150 years. About the Last Minotaur, with 431 kills (100% notables) and 18 rampages to his name, who is the only living member of his species and the biggest killer of notables after Sut Hatedcrypt. About the vampire Olm Man.

But I won't. Hope you enjoyed the read.
