Title: Dino Arena - Round 2 Turn 19 - Denoument
Post by: Joben on September 24, 2013, 09:07:42 am
You are a Raptor. A Hunter.

One day you woke up in this place, surrounded by stone walls. Some of your kin are with you.

The door at the top of the exit ramp opens. They want you to fight again.

You hear the grinding noise of the valves opening. The room will fill with water soon.

You can't stay, you must enter the arena.

You wonder what your foe will be today, and if it will taste good. They keep you hungry for the fights.

You all file up the ramp into the arena. The door closes behind the last of you.

The arena itself is huge and circular. At ground level there are many doors of varying sizes. The walls about 25 meters tall, and so far their smooth expanse has proved unclimbable.

The landscape has changed, this happens often. It's currently an approximation of a sparse forest. Dirt is underfoot, ferns, shrubs and tall plants are scattered around along with a few small boulders and fallen logs.

You have barely taken in the new scene when one of the larger doors starts to slide open.

Out of the gloom steps a large predator. First you see the huge jaws, then the heavy body with muscle rippling beneath it's scaly skin. It pauses and looks about as if confused. Maybe this is it's first combat. Then it sees you and starts walking forward.

((Handy pic is handy, shows aprox scale, but it's actually further away right now.))

You all stare at the great beast for a moment evaluating or remembering.
(Know/Cunning Rolls for everyone: 4+1,1-1,4+1,2,6+1,3+2. 4 Successes. You know a lot of details about how it fights)

You are all at Far range from your foe, and it is approaching. What do you do?

If victim survives it is no longer Pinned.[/li][/list]
If the victim dies, is it still pinned?

Ironhide glances around.
"Watch it! There's a Big-Tooth!"

Look around the arena and determine two things:
1. Is there a ceiling?
2. Are there trees around which could be climbed fairly easily?

If 2 is Yes, climb up a nearby tree, out of the Big-Tooth's reach. If not, try to find some place to get out of its line-of-sight.

"i changed my mind, can i go back in the water cave?"

Taking care not to attract the large predators attention prematurely Pariah follows Dwarmin a steady pace and tries to keep himself in the edge of the big-tooth's vision ready to distract it by hollering at the top of his lungs and flaring his feathers aggressively should it gain too much ground on his pack mate.

move to maintain a far distance from the Acrocanthosaurus and medium from Dwarmin, do not exert myself unless im forced to manipulate the creature.

if it gets too close to Dwarmin, manipulate creature: Trick the Acrocanthosaurus into charging at me (as in flavor text above) and try to lure it past McDreich if he is unnoticed.
otherwise, try to discern or remember any other details about this creature or its attack patterns.

''Why am I the one thinking of ambush?''

Hide: Staying close to Dwarmin and Pariah, hide behind a log or high shrubbery.

If it is obvious hiding failed but not chased: Hide again, moving to other high shrubbery.
If it is obvious hiding failed AND being chased: RUN!
If hiding succeeded, but big dino is still far away, sneak into medium range.
If hiding succeeded, but big dino is in medium range: remain hidden.
If hiding succeeded and big dino gets into close range: Ambush the belly and grab it.

((Mmm, belly nice and soft... ish. I dread the idea of facing an anklosaurus.))

If the victim dies, is it still pinned?

((Ahhhh lol good catch. Umm....Yes I suppose so. They'll probably be two pieces, one still underfoot, one in the jaws. They would be considered Held/Pinned, though it would be a trivial Free action for the beast to let them go. The idea is if it doesn't do lethal damage it's because when it tried to pull you apart it lost it's grip so now you're free.

This is it's big opportunistic finishing combo if one of you is in reach and falls over. It takes two turns to do, but the median damage is something like 70-80 points. This creature is intended to be a huge threat, up near the limit of what a group of 6 of you can fight and expect to have survivors.))

((is the jaws/legs attack a +2 on top of its attack stat +2?))

((Nope, sorry that unclear. I'm gonna go tweak the listing, I think I know how to state it more clearly.

You'll probably never see anything with a +4 basic attack, that's a 91% hit rate. The intent is that it's base attack, which by preference is biting or kicking is +2. The Special Attacks section is intended to list variations of that. Modifiers listed there are absolute, not cumulative with it's base stat bonuses.))

Yes that's a reasonable assumption. But the RNG Gods chose to hide the details from you. Apparently none of your characters has ever seen an Acrocanthosaurus fall down before so you don't know how serious an injury it would be. That tidbit will only be revealed if you can make it happen.

(Initiative 5+1, High for this combat, you'll act before Bigtooth)

Whatever is above is a little puzzling, it might be a roof, it might be a sky. If it's a roof it seems to be a long way away.

(Luck 2) There is not a nearby tree that seems big enough to climb right where you are. (Sense 3) And a rapid glance around doesn't reveal any better ones within one move.

But there are smaller things that can block line of sight. (Stealth 5) You move off a little way's and crouch behind some ferns. You think it lost track of you for now.

Bigtooth moves to Medium range.

"i changed my mind, can i go back in the water cave?"

Taking care not to attract the large predators attention prematurely Pariah follows Dwarmin a steady pace and tries to keep himself in the edge of the big-tooth's vision ready to distract it by hollering at the top of his lungs and flaring his feathers aggressively should it gain too much ground on his pack mate.

otherwise, try to discern or remember any other details about this creature or its attack patterns.

((is the jaws/legs attack a +2 on top of its attack stat +2?))

(Your Initiative is for this combat is 5+1, High.)

You start moving to maintain distance from the Acro...man that's a long name...from the Bigtooth but not too far from Dwarmin. ((Minor action)) And watch for a few seconds to see what it does. Dwarmin and the others are still together in a little group and it's running straight for them.

You scream loudly trying to get it to look in your direction (Cunning 1+1 vs 2) but it doesn't seem to notice. Instead it snaps at Mastahcheese.

Bigtooth is at Far range.

Sneak away from the pack so when it attack, I can run up the tail and start biting the head

(Initiative 4+1, High, for this combat)

You move away from the pack (Stealth 2+1) You're not quite sure you did it unseen, but at least you're now off to the side. After it runs up and snaps at Mastahcheese you run behind it and try to scamper up it's tail as it swings by. (Cunning 2+1 vs 6+2) You misjudge though and the tip of the tail hits you painfully as the creature pivots, doing 10 damage.

You are Close to the Bigtooth.

Quote from: Bigtooth
So Hungry! Say Hello to TINY MEALS.

(Standard NPC Initiative, locked between High and Low)

Thump Thump Thump

You move to Medium Range with most of the little guys. Where there more a minute ago? (Cunning 1-1) You guess not.

You charge trying to bite the closest meal, which is arbitrarily...Mastahcheese
(Bite 3+2vs5. Luck 3) Your jaws snap shut just a little off target.

Close:
Mastahcheese
Scrapheap

Medium:
Dwarmin
Maxinum

Far:
GreatWyrmGold
UnholyPariah

Toehook does a battle squall.

"Yyyyark! Lemme at em! Bet you can't catch me, you...big...mouth...full of teeth!"

Action: Run around, and goad the big tooth to chase me around a bit so he gets a big winded. I'm much faster then he is!

(Initiative 4-1. Low. You will act after the Bigtooth for this combat)

The bigtooth runs up to it's striking (Medium) distance and tries to kill Mastah.

(Cunning 6-1vs3-1) You shriek loudly and snap at it. The Bigtooth reorients itself to attack you next turn. You scuttle away regaining Far distance.

''Why am I the one thinking of ambush?''

Hide: Staying close to Dwarmin and Pariah, hide behind a log or high shrubbery.

If hiding succeeded, but big dino is in medium range: remain hidden.
If hiding succeeded and big dino gets into close range: Ambush the belly and grab it.

((Mmm, belly nice and soft... ish. I dread the idea of facing an anklosaurus.))

(Snipped non-relevant sections of decision tree.)

(Initiative 3, Low. You Will act after the bigtooth in this combat.)

The Bigtooth dashes up to your group. It attack someone else and you dive off into some nearby shrubbery. (Stealth 4-1) (Luck 3) It doesn't come quite close enough to your hiding place. So you hunker down and wait.

Bigtooth is at Medium range

While the others distract it, try to get behind it without being spotted/targeted.

(Initiative 1+2. Low)

It charges up and tries to bite you, but after it misses it turns away for some reason. You move behind and try to stay out of sight. (Stealth 5-1) You are Hidden, currently at Close range, though it might move before your next action.

Genus =/= Species

Locate nearest climbable tree. Sneak to it and climb it.

You ended up a bit closer to a larger tree after your last move. You head for it and climb up easily (5)

You are now about 3 meters off the ground in a tree and Far from the Bigtooth.

Holler at the top of my lungs and flare my feathers aggressively whilst making mock charges at the bigtooth in an attempt to divert its attention to me and drop its guard against the others.

If it charges me, lure it past one of my hidden teammates
If not, try again.

(Cunning 5+1-2-1=3) You succeed in drawing it's attention with a greater margin of success than Dwarmin.

It starts stomping in your direction but when Scrapheap darts in and attacks it turns to snap at him. It remains Far away.

(Cunning 4+1) You suspect it's very reactionary and has a short attention span.

Sneak close and bite the right leg.

((I'll give you an attack bonus if you get 5 or better Stealth))

(Stealth 6+1 Ok then...) You run up and try to bite it's right leg. (-3) end up bouncing painfully off it's leg as the big creature maneuvers -10 HP

This draws it's attention, it turns and snaps at you barely missing.

Quote from: Bigtooth
Eat noisy one that's mocking me!

Wait what was that? Something just nipped at your heels! Change of plans!

You forget about Unholy and turn to snap at Scrapheap (-1) but miss.

Something scampers across your back then the next thing you know the ground is coming up very fast. You are Prone.

Also your stomach hurts.

AHGH! TOO CLOSE!

Since scap is biting it's leg, use my stealthy Cunning bonus to jump on it's back!

(Stealth 2-1 No extra bonus for you.) You again try to climb up onto your foe. (Attack total 1) You clamber up onto it's back doing 2 damage to it's left leg in the process.

A few seconds later the creature falls over (Cunning 5+2) but you ride it to the ground with incredible grace and remain in place atop it's body.

Toehook notices everyone was hitting the right leg...

!

Action: Barrel toward it's right leg and headbutt it, hopefully knocking it off balance! Hit and Run!

You charge into Close range and angle for it's right leg.

(Hmm specialized attack...I'm not sure what would be fair for this. I'm going to provisionally say half damage because it's blunt, but a 10% chance to trip per point of Attack Total on a hit.)

(Attack 1) (Bigtooth Percentile Luck Roll: 10) You smack into it's right leg doing trivial damage but it stumbles and it's 7 ton bulk slams to the ground. (Taking 5 damage to it's head and 6 to it's body)

Oh blimey! Sorry, thought I had posted:

Actions: Sneak into close range if not already.
AMBUSH! Grab onto that damn belly.

(Stealth 6-1 Success) Stealth is not your  forte but you managed to pull it off this time. You are completely unnoticed as you move in to attack. (Attack [4+1]-[1+2-2]= 4 Total) You start ripping into it's belly doing a highly respectable 8 damage.

(Climb 5+1,2+1) After a bit of tricky climbing you arrive close to the Bigtooth but above it. You can probably drop down onto it's back, which may be easier that climbing up a leg.

Attack the belly.

You bite and pull off a chunk of skin and flesh from the belly before the creature rises to it's feet again. It's tree trunk size tail swishes toward you and you scramble out of the way, but end up sprawled Prone on the ground.

Your consolation is that the blood covering your face isn't yours. You have succeeded in wounding the Bigtooth's belly.

(6-1-2+2-2 Attack Total 3, 6 Damage)

spend entire turn reaching bigtooth.

You do so, moving in close to be able to attack it.

Quote from: Bigtooth
Get up, spin around and roar at all the little bitey things!

Bigtooth clambers back to it's feet and pivots in place roaring in pain and fury, it's huge tail whips around behind it as it turns. (vs Scrapheap, Attack 0, Luck 6) (vs Dwarmin 4, Special: Knock to Medium distance and Prone)

"Yeeerk!" Toehook yeerk'd!

His Dad, Slider, would be so proud!

Action: Claw the exposed belly while he's down!

You try for it's belly but the creature is already rising, it whirls around and it's tail strikes you a bone jarring blow as you approach. (40 Damage) You are thrown back head over heals away from it. You stumble back to your feet and doggedly re-approach back to Close range but can't attack before an abstract concept called "end of turn" intervenes.

((Apologies for the basically negated action...and the cracked ribs.))

ATTACK BELLY. KILL KILL KILL!

Your grip on the beast's belly holds as it rises to it's feet again. You try to hurt it some more, but only mange to keep your hold.

You are clinging to Bigtooth's belly.

(Attack [6]-[6+1]= -1. Miss)

Use my claws on it's eyes! Blind it!

You scamper up to it's head section hoping to rip out it's eyes. When you get to the top of it's skull and start trying to claw it bucks it's head furiously. You take some Bigtooth skull straight to the chin and fall off. Somehow you manage to land on your feet.

(Climbing 6, Attack 1 vs 7, Luck 6: fall damage averted, -10 HP)

((Your Defense wasn't a factor because you were not attacked. With the fluff cut away your Attack Total minus it's Defense Total was negative 2,  that's major failure in this system, which triggers automatic minimum damage from the creature you're fighting. (https://docs.google.com/document/d/19-GlREFCrs5fVNfs1aWrz_kDdQlAXhhzfkNQHlx1XwM/pub#h.110y4s4bx07w) Conceptually your attack went so poorly that you didn't just miss you got hurt a little. A bit like the Botch rules in some systems. (Although looking at the graph again the threshold probably needs to be adjusted from -2 to -3 to trigger a counter. The base rate should be about 15% not 25%)

Errr...what...Oh! I see you did use the word 'grab' back in turn 2. Sorry about that. Ok, sure we can apply that properly. You're holding on, and that would alter the turn 3 modifiers a little so you would avoid the counter.))

Drop on top of the Bigtooth's head, using my momentum to increase the force behind my attack as I attack the Bigtooth's head!

You drop straight down into it's head with considerable force. Your claws bite deep and you grab on. It shakes it's head and swipes at you with it's forepaws but you maintain your grip.

(Attack 5-1+1 Def 2+2-1, Total 2, Damage 4)

tear at the bigtoes ankle tendon on the same side dwarmin is attacking.

If bigtooth is knocked over by the end of turn, jump up onto its side.
If not, cling to its leg.

((Perhaps you could include a charge action that burns twice as much vigor but lets you reach and attack targets in the same turn?))

You lunge for it's left leg, along with Dwarmin. You leap onto the leg and hang on digging in your claws and ripping.

(Attack 5+1 vs 1+2, Total 3, Damage 6)

Leap on to and cling to the tail. Bite it to help grip and damage.

You rise back to your feet and leap, but the tail swishes almost out of your reach. The tips of Your claws skitter along it's scaly hide but you can't get a grip.

The bigtooth charges off to Medium distance thrashing at the Hunters clinging to it.

(Attack 4-1 vs 1+2, Luck 4, Null)

Quote from: Bigtooth
Get it off get it off!!!!

You Charge off and try to get the angry hissing thing off your face. You bend you neck down try to pull it off with your forepaws but can't get a grip.

(1+1 vs 1+1, Luck 3, Null)

Toehook was too stupid and brave to feel pain, but he thought he should get up before the bigfoot stomped on him!

Action: Bite the bigtoes knee! He'll never be an adventurer like me!

You and Unholy coordinate and strike for it's left leg, he gets on, then the creature starts running. You catch up and bite at it's leg but miss.

(Attack 3+2 vs Def 5+2)

(Wondering where my +1 defense went to. I imagine that since I didn't say to KEEP clinging to the belly that I can't argue that one as well.)

Leap up to belly and attack it, and try to cling on to it!

(As retconned you're already on belly)

You try to hold on and rip at the same time, this doesn't go well at all. You fall off and are struck a glancing blow by the creature's leg as it runs along.

(Attack 1 vs 4+1 Botch) (10 HP lost) (Luck 5 landed on your feet.)

Jump on it's back again!

The Bigtooth is running along so you have to chase it to catch up. You leap and just barely get your claws into it's right leg but don't manage to climber higher onto it's back yet.

(Attack 4 vs 1+2, Total 1, Damage 2) (Riding R Leg)

((Hey joben, can you put the special actions like grip, rush and ambush back in the op, i find having the specific details on hand helpful for my strategising.))

((Sure, done. That section is in the off-site rules doc though. I recently added table of contents with links to it.))

(reasoning: that thing's +2 defense has to be countered by a +2 offense from ambush, so I can get to grips with the belly again, see if I can get to some viscera sooner rather than later.)

((Sorta. Ambush is intended to be a huge bonus to first strike only against surprised foes. It may lose track of one or two of you for a few seconds but it knows it's in combat and that you're around. So you can't have the full Ambush bonus. I'll allow +1 Attack if you make a good stealth roll. Conceptually you make a more sneaky strike it doesn't see coming as well.

(My old stealth system from last year was fubar, testing the new draft version and tweaking the bonuses might be up next)

Simple 1d6-1d6 combat is a harsh mistress; this thing's +2 is beastly. A +1 on your side almost doubles your chance to hit at all. The list of other things that help include: Damage it's vision, already be on it before you attack, and knock it over again.

This fight is basically a question of can you negate it's defenses and wound it several times before the slow attrition of botched attacks and it's potential to occasionally do ~50 damage, take too many of you out. Fortunately the way the wound system works it will start to sorta death spiral into ineffectiveness and unconsciousness as you hurt it.))

tear at the tendons on the inside of the knee.

If the bigtooth falls over jump off towards the underside of its tail to avoid being crushed and then loop around begind it and jump onto its other leg to avoid being struck whilst dismounting or mounting

You start trying to chew your way into it's leg but don't make much headway. When the thing starts to topple a few seconds later you hop off to avoid getting squished.

(Attack 3+1 vs 4+1 Miss)

Bite and scratch at the Bigtooth's eye. Don't fall off.

You scratch away at it's face doing a little damage.

It doesn't like that and reaches for you again. You wriggle away, but despite your intentions to not fall you lose your grip and drop clumsily to the ground landing Prone on your back. A second later the Bigtooth stumbles and falls on top of you. You are not hurt much but you are Pinned under it's bulk.

(4-1 vs 1+1, 2 Damage) (2 Damage from falling 4 from getting fallen on) (Pinned)

I imagine this big beast has it's hands full trying to fend off so many attacks, so hopefully that'll help me!

STEALTH MODE ACTIVATE! Keep to the shrubbery.
If need be, sneak to keep within close range of the big tooth.

You drop a bit behind it and find a nice clump of ferns to hide in.

(Stealth 5-1)

Quote from: BigTooth
Pull the thing off my face!

You swipe at it powerfully and don't quite get it but it comes off your face anyway. Awesome.

(6+1 vs 6+1, Luck 5)

One of the little Hunters strikes are your legs. An awkward tangle ensues and you fall over. Not awesome.

(Prone. 7 Damage to Head, 3 to Body)

(Luck for 3 closest Hunters in post order, 3,2,4. GreatWyrmGold is lowest and in fail range. It falls toward him and he just fell flat on his back so he can't evade.)

Action: More slashing at the legs!

You attack it's legs in a very impressive manner, an awkward tangle ensues as it tries to avoid you. Your claws don't really connect. But you can probably call it a success since your foe falls over and it's head bounces off the ground in a way that can't be good for it.

Apparently you're pretty great at making that happen.

(6+2 vs 6+2, Luck 5)

Hide again while it looking at other things

You try to slip out of sight while looking around.

You don't see any threats around other than the Bigtooth.

((You rolled really well and see all the things. Is there anything in particular you want to know? I'll answer before the next turn is run.))

(Stealth 1+1, Sense 6+1)

Ok then, Keep climbing!

Your plan is momentarily complicated by the Bigtooth falling over again, but ultimately that makes it a little easier to get onto it's back.

((I'm not even going to make you roll for that this time, you're really good at climbing and it's was dazed.))

Well yes, since it just happened this turn you are still pinned.

btw technically the only possible action while pinned is to attempt to wiggle out. But practically you probably want to add a conditional because it's likely to get up or roll off you within the next turn allowing other actions anyway.

The optimal form is probably 'If it gets off me do X, else attempt escape'))

((OOC: I wonder if there's any bonus to guessing my enemies move and acting appropriately toward it?))

Sorry I'll try to make it more explicit which roll is which in future. But there's a rule of thumb, any attack roll in your turn is something you did. The Bigtooth's is in his turn.

Yes it fell on you, it's not intentionally holding you down, it's just sprawled across your legs or something. Functionally that seemed the same as the effect applied by it's special move, although logically he can't bite you while he's lying on top of you.

Unfortunately you miss completely. How does that even work? It's the size of a house!

(Attack 4+1 [Situational bonus from Hidden] Vs 6, Miss)

Claw its eyes again! Hold on!

You scamper from it's back up to it's head and claw at it's eyes. Unfortunately you do this rather clumsily and when it bucks it's head one of your shoulders is wrenched painfully. But since you are so nimble you don't fall off.

(Attack 4+2 vs 4, Damage 20)

latch onto the weaker leg and tear the tendons to pieces.

Your pounce goes quite poorly and you bump your head on it's knee.

(Attack 3+1 vs 5+2, Botch, 10 dmg taken)

(nothing I can think of. How about weak trees(that could be timbered on to the Acrocanthosaurus))

Charge in and bite the Arms

You move back to Close range and try to disarm your foe. Good try but it doesn't go your way. It's already standing again and it the arms waggle out of your grasp as you lunge for them.

(6-1 vs 5+2, Miss)

Oh. I thought it stepped on me.

Wriggle out from under Bigtooth. If I am not pinned, get up and climb a tree.

After a few second the pressure lessens as it rises back to it's feet. You're free! You get up and run to a nearby tree that's Medium range from the Bigtooth.

A moment later great weight comes down on your body. You realize to your horror that the Bigtooth is standing on you! It's completely ignoring Mastahcheese who is frantically scrambling around on it's head and neck. A drop of saliva from it's toothy maw drops down onto your face.

(10 Damage Taken, Pinned By Bigtooth's Right Leg)

Climb tree, brachiate above the Bigtooth again.

You climb the tree and are now more or less above the Bigtooth.

Toehook yeerk'd away, limping a bit. He had to get the bigtooths attention off him...

Not now!

Action: Keep nimble! Evade until it stops paying attention to me!

You run out to Far range and adopt a Defensive stance.

(Def +1 until the begining of your next turn)

Geez... this thing has GOT to die!

Attack that damn Belly.
Cling to that damn Belly.

You leap up and latch onto it's belly ripping into the flesh.

Your attack angle is a little off and it shoulders you roughly out of the way as you approach.

You bite down on a chunk of flesh and pull, it comes loose with unexpected suddenness, you flop awkwardly onto the ground. The Bigtooth steps on your tail as it rages along.

Furious attack the belly.

(I presume since furious attack to gain a +1 to attack is a minor action, and therefore, you need the major action to ACTUALLY attack, this means I can't furious attack, attack and cling, is that right?)

(I'm not sure I made it explicit, I'll have to go check. But I've generally been treating Cling as a free action since it's basically just attack and don't let go. But yes you need to actually Attack to have Fury do anything, it just gives you a positive modifier at the cost of some Vigor.)

Furiously attack the back of the neck/base of the skull!

You try to rip through it's neck tissue but are momentarily stymied by the unusual size of it's spinal ridge, the massive bones underlying its hide keep getting in the way.

(Furious Attack 2-1+1 vs 2+1)

------------

Scrapheap's turn held until Dwarmin ready to go.

------------

defend and run to the space next to and just behind the bigtooths right leg where it will be really awkward for it to hit me.

You get up and run to circle the Bigtooth trying to stay behind it while tensed to avoid any attack.

Quote from: Bigtooth
Deal with most worrisome threat.

You shake your head and Furiously try to use your arms to pull Mastahcheese off your face and hold onto him.

Action: Flanking strike with Scapheap on left leg!
Flanking Strike with Dwarmin on the left leg

The two of you make eye contact and bob your heads in mutual agreement before zigzagging inward from opposite directions. There's no way it can properly respond to this. Unfortunately there isn't much to respond to, you both fail to do damage.

Dwarmin is starting to feel exhaustion creeping up on him.

(Attack 4-1 vs 4+1) (Attack 1+2 vs 6+1, Botch Canceled)

Furious attack the belly.

You rip furiously into the Bigtooth's belly and are rewarded with a cascade of gore. You have broken it's abdominal wall.

(Furious Attack 6+1 vs 2+1, Damage 8 )

(Cunning 4) You realize this is a serious wound, it probably won't be on it's feet for longer than another minute, and tugging out more loops of intestine won't further hasten it's fall.

Furiously rip its eyes out of it's skull!
When this eventually works, you all will thank me.

Before you can blind the Bigtooth your are dragged screaming off it's head. It's got you gripped loosely in it's foreclaws.

(3 Damage taken, Held)

You rip furiously at the it's body. (arbitrary see note)

It responds by pulling tighter, you can feel it's claw tips under your skin.

I'll say you could drag one of your fellows at least some distance. I'm not sure of the exact technique but it seems like creatures with hands should be able to manage it.

And yes, you can move beyond Far, it's just an abstraction for handling striking distances during a fight. When you get out of strike range and can relax Vigor stops going down by the second. Like I think Dwarmin's is at 10 and I'm just going to leave it there.

Now about hitting 0 Vigor...this gave me trouble for some reason. Mostly because too many ways to handle it, not a lack of options. I think theres a misleading early draft of the clause in the rules doc. (Sorry about that.)

The concept I'm working from now is that Vigor 0 = Exhaustion, not unconsciousness. You're out of breath, muscles burning. You'll fight like crap, but you can probably walk away under your own power.

I'll post mechanics when in the morning when coffee will help my brain work.

move to max range

You move to Far range.

(Move x2)

Action: Yip! I flee!

You move out past Far range, well out of plausible reach of the Bigtooth.

(Out of Combat; No Current Threats, Vigor burn halted)

Keep attacking the neck! Bite and rip, make it bleed a lot!

You kick at the Bigtooth but slip and fall over!

(2-1 vs 4+2-2-1. Clash, Luck 1) (Prone)

The Bigtooth snaps at you while you're on the ground. The angle is really awkward though and it ends up battering you rather than biting.

(20 dmg taken)

Quote from: Bigtooth
Try to spot weakest foe, Furiously kill it with final effort.

You're too exhausted, you barely understand what's going on anymore. The little hunters are just blurry shapes. You can't pick one out. You lash out desperately at the nearest blur, GreatWyrmGold who just made a move against you.

(Sense 1)

(Furious Attack 4+1+1 vs  2+1+1, Hit dmg 20)

Bite it's face while it's down!

You cannot bite ye face.

(Attack 2 vs 5+2-2-1)

Continue outlooking for Unholy

(This works on everyone in the same area)

You screech out a warning to GreatWyrmGold but unfortunately he's prone and gets hit anyway.

(Sense 3+1, Success, Allies Def +1)

fair enough.

Retreat to medium range. Taunt cos this thing's practically dead.

You pull back to Medium, out of it's immediate reach unless it moves, and ridicule it mercilessly. It chuffs back at you, snapping it's jaws once in your direction, but doesn't even try to approach.

The Bigtooth's movement slows. It's remaining good eye appears to become unconfused. It stops snapping at Greatwrym and lays it's head down on the ground. You all know the signs. It's strength is gone. It's breathing is rapid and shallow, then that too slows until the giant ribcage is still.

You have defeated your foe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huQoDlHmqrE) and won meat for yourselves. All of you are alive, though not even one amongst you has escaped harm.

The sky above you dims to twilight, and in contrast to this the door to your cell opens up on the wall, warm light spilling out, providing a beacon to the way back.

You know from experience that you can't stay in the Arena long after a match. Already there is an unpleasant chill in the air that will grow more intense with each passing hour. But for now you should eat.

Over the next few minutes you all get back 3d6 hitpoints and Vigor as any bleeding stops and you catch your breath:

Yeh it's basically over at this point. If anyone wants to describe what they do or RP how they feel about it that's fine.

But basically you guys eat, and go back inside. Fade to black. Anyone who insists on staying in the Arena would eventually freeze to death. The entities that run this facility are pretty railroady.  ;)

Thank you for playing a round of Dino Arena.

This game will be on hiatus for about a week, but will return for another round if there is continued interest. In the meantime I welcome questions, comments and suggestions.

Was there anything you did or did not like in particular?

Was there anything you didn't understand?

Do you have any suggestions about how to make the game better?

Any further comments beyond these questions?

I liked it a lot.

I can't really think of any suggestions, though, sorry.

Both of those would work. Perhaps decreasing Vigor could lead to penalties, and at zero they need to roll to act?

1. I can't find much fault with it-I do like the system of vigor being stam/HP. It's easy to understand.
2. A better way of describing wounds might be helpful, but that's just a UI issue. I wasn't sure if I was hurting it at some point.
3. Nope, but I'm horrible with numbers anyway.
4. Glad to have you back, Joben. :)

5. I would say endurance check entirely. As you alluded to earlier in a post, some animals can fight long after they're probably going to be medically dead. But, I'd make it somewhat permanent-once you fall down, you're not likely to get back up. Either from a 'coup de grace' or instant kill maneuver (such as being swallowed whole or torn apart by a large pack) or simple exhaustion. Since this game is going for the realistic side, it shouldn't be really be easy to kill anything bigger than ourselves, and we'd have to pick our fights carefully. Also, as a player, I'd rather fight to the bitter end, then limp along not hitting anything or being useful because of my massive penalties-which would make me more likely to retreat, anyway.

Realistically, most predators retreat before they get completely exhausted. Also realistically, being tired makes your fighting less effective.

That would make sense.

However I am hesitant to add semi-persistent modifiers to player characters for the simple reason that they're hard for me to keep track of properly. One might be ok, but I feel like a tiered system would be difficult to keep track of relative to the amount of useful crunch we got out of it.

Also I'm not entirely convinced that having players be partially disabled for big chunks of every fight would result in fun game play, even if arguably realistic.

1. Thanks, I thought that all worked pretty well.

2. Ok. Could you please dig up a turn where you were unsure of the result so I can look at it? This is definitely something I want to fix.

3. Haha ok.

4. Thank you.

5. The short response to this is "Yes." Those are basically my design goals for this system. Tweaks to further encourage that sort of behavior and result will be enacted before the next round.

@Joben: It was more of an overall thing. Like, if I did 4 damage to the 'monster, I was confused as to where that showed up on the char sheet. Just the wound system in general, I was puzzled with. I didn't really completely understand the number/base/wound table.

Gotcha. I don't think I documented that, because the table was something I realized I needed literally as I was writing the first turn.

The core idea of the wound system is that the main result of injury is decreased stamina and capability. The goal being a downward spiral that roughly parallels the effects of exhaustion, shock and blood loss. It intentionally avoids Critical Existence Failure tropes where you are totally fine until you're not. Instead everything is a gradient scale of 'how injured are you?' The more injured something is the fewer functional turns it has left.

Each body part of the Bigtooth had a hit point value. When this value was reduced below a certain threshold it resulted in a "Wound" which increased Vigor lost per turn and added a minor negative status effect. If a part was brought all the way to 0 it caused a second wound and generally a more serious version of the previous status effect.

So the cells of the table left to right were: | Name of Part | HP of part on previous turn --> Current HP of Part | Threshold of First Wound & Parts Starting HP |

When does this system get to the point where you just die of your injuries?
Do we have to just keep tearing away at large creatures until all their vigor bleeds away or can we kill them by dealing a set amount of damage even if they still have heaps of vigor. (Like rendering their head to -50 hp)

Yes egregious head trauma far beyond normal wounding would kill things. Probably Body too, which could represent heart, lung or spine damage.

It may or may not be faster depending on the creature. I'll include that in the stats block of future critters.

I feel this way so often.

Especially after that one duel game I made that needed around 30D6 rolled for a single attack to be calculated.

I meant to give feedback!!!

First off, totes in for next round.

Roight:
I love your system (I also agree on the D10 change thar). I love how it works and how you've gone for realistic yet gamey approach, I think you've done a good job reconciling the two.

I think the teamwork actions are vital. Point of raptors is that they were greater together than the sum of their parts, so I like the team actions. We'll get to see all of them I would think in round 2.
Will mention that I feel that raptors should get a bonus to their attacks when there are raptors clinging onto the creature (unless it's random thrash, naturally) to simulate how the dinosaur would not really be able to concentrate aswell on a target when he has some on him.
I'd hazard a suggestion at for every 2 raptors currently riding the dinosaur, +1 attack for all raptors.
Saying that, I wouldn't put it in until we get a few more rounds in to test current balance. :P

So hoping we get an easier prey. Our battered raptors means we only have... 3 to 4 combat worthy raptors.

Thanks! :)

One of the motivations for moving to d10 is that it makes a little more room in the system for increments of bonus before the modifiers outweigh the roll. So fitting in a teamwork one is quite possible. And riders = distraction makes sense. I'll mark that down and come back to it soon for round 3 maybe. I don't think it will be very relevant for this one.

You guys have healed up some from the last fight.

New Stuff.

The rules doc got keelhauled in an attempt to make it easier to grasp. Several sections got moved, combined with others, or split off into their own thing.

In particular there's now basically a chart for Major Actions, and the ways you can spend extra Vigor for bonuses. And free and minor actions that are combat specific have their own brief section now right after that.

 Link to new subheading (https://docs.google.com/document/d/19-GlREFCrs5fVNfs1aWrz_kDdQlAXhhzfkNQHlx1XwM/pub#h.9fmfghijlvhn)

There's also a Rest mechanic formalized so you can save your energy and even get back a little if you're almost exhausted. And if you really need to get something done you can trade 10 HP for 10 Vigor.

All in all I attempted to expand the amount of control you guys have over the effort you expend and the results you can expect from it.

Let me know if anything isn't clear.

...Round 2 intro up soon.

Round 2 Begins

A few days pass without incident. There isn't much to do in your cell. There's a water pool, a sand pit and a mud pit. Also a strange spherical thing about the size of your head that seems to be made of skin, but you can't bite it effectively. It does bounce in an amusing manner when you try though.

The rest is welcome. Most of you spend a few days sleeping off your injuries and digesting your massive meal of Bigtooth flesh. On day six, around the time your stomachs start feeling empty again, the door to the Arena opens. You're all feeling much better, Unholy still has some cracked ribs though and winces a bit when he moves.

It has changed since last time. The forest is thicker and darker.

Spoiler: The Arena (click to show/hide)

You all sniff the air and Maxinum thinks he senses a prey beast some way's distant. *sniff* herbivore. *sniff sniff* Maybe some type of Iguanodontia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iguanodontia) There is a very slight breeze coming toward you and it is bringing the scent.

What do you do? This is a hunting scenario. You may want to plan for the fact that your prey will likely prefer evasion over combat.

As long as we stay at least a medium distance while "chasing" it this strategy would give Dwarmin a whopping +7 to his initial attack and if combined with a flanking mock charge and a clinging attack this increases to +9

Take the new D10 system into account and he can deal anywhere between 0-36 damage.))

Some of the rest of you will sneak around to the side and get behind it. The goal being to drive it toward Dwarmin so he gets first strike.))

The six of you fan out and advance carefully through the forest.

(Sense Rolls 4 , 1-1, 5 , 6+1, 1+1, 3-1, Yay someone critted)

Unholy and Maxinum call a halt after a few minutes and report that they think it's a lone tenontosaurus, and give a distance estimate based on the strength of it's scent. It's not quite in sight yet.

Dwarmin and Scrapheap search together for a the best hiding places nearby. (4-1, 6+1) They slide into the shadows and wait (+1 Stealth when the time comes)

Where does everyone else want to be in relation to the prey? There are 4 possible positions as I see it.

Ambush crew: Dwarmin, Scrapheap
Left Flank:
Right Flank:
Rear:

Ambush crew is going to need to pass stealth checks. It's less of the a problem if the others fail theirs, you just end up spooking it a little early.

Mastahcheese and GreatWrymGold head off first circling around to get to the rear. (M Stealth 3+0, G Stealth 6+1) Mastah makes a little noise but he's far enough out that the rustling leaves that mark his passing are not disastrous.

(Teno Sense 4+1) As Mastah and Great take up a position upwind the Teno stops eating and snorts. It's sense of smell isn't very good, but it is suspicious. Something isn't right.

It turns around and around scanning the woods visually. Unholy and Maximum head off to take up positions on the left and right flank respectively. They are not very subtle but it doesn't seem to see them. (Teno Sense 1+1 vs Unholy_Pariah Stealth 3+0, Maxinum 2+0)

Dwarmin and Scrapheap sneak forward a little and settle into their ambush spots. (Dwarmin Stealth 5+1 Scrapheap Stealth 5+2)

Everyone is at Very Far range.

Disposed on this manner around the target...

Ambush crew: Dwarmin, Scrapheap
Left Flank: Unholy
Right Flank: Maxinum
Rear: mastahcheese, GreatWyrmGold

The teno is uncertain. It's a little spooked and wants to get somewhere that doesn't smell like raptor. It wavers back and forth for a moment and then ambling slowly toward Unholy_Pariah's position.

lol I didn't even know what time zone you're in.  I just figured you'd see it next time you were on.

It's late for me too so I'm not going to write the rest of the turn now. You've got 12'ish hours if you want to change your action. I'll probably get to it around lunchtime tomorrow.

But since I'm here anyway I'll point out GWG posted a comment but not an action. Whatcha wanna do as the is ambush kicks off buddy? For some reason I feel like revealing that Unholy successfully sends it toward Dwarmin. I already wrote part of the turn.

Oh Also, while I'm addressing players midturn. Dwarmin if you wanna express a preference on what bodypart you're trying to injure before I post the results that would be groovy. I could have the dice Toehook pick, but he's a doofus. ;) ))

((Is there any penalty to a 'called shot'? If not, I'd probably go for his legs...))

Oh dang it, why now?

((I was wondering why my stealth roll didnt fail horribly..
And yeah, my plan was for complete encirclement with the only gap being the ambush location.))

manipulate creature.  Alter its direction wihout panicking it instantly
Noticing the tentosaurus coming towards him Unholy remains hidden and begins making quite noises similar to a raptors typical hunting calls in order to make it think that there are a pack of raptors some distance away in that general direction, not enogh to panick it but enough to discourage continuing in his direction.

if successful follow it towards the ambush party/mock charge if it closes to within Dwarmins range.
if not try again but louder.

Aid action.

The pair of you pop out of cover and move forward, herding it perfectly toward Dwarmin. It's very distracted by this and doesn't even see the attack coming.

(Unholy Cunning 3+1 vs 1-1)
(GWG Cunning 6+1 vs 3-1)

Action: Flex my claws in preparation to spring from the cover of the bushes! Ambush/Sneak Attack/Charge/Wild/Leap attack!

It comes your way within easy striking distance and leap onto it's right read leg tearing huge gouges in the muscle. It bellows in pain and surprise.

(Attack 8+2+2+3+1 vs 9+1. Hit 12 Damage, Clinging to R-Leg)

(+3 Ambush bonus, 7 Vigor Spent for +2, Natural +2 from skill, +1 From Teammate distraction)

Spot for the others, to give them a better chance.

You keep an eye out while Dwarmin leaps on the Teno, but no danger presents itself. The ambush is struck without a hitch.

(Sense 5+1)

Move to within medium range if possible. Try and remain Hidden.

You sneak closer to the Teno, getting to Medium range as Dwarmin leaps out and attacks it.

(Stealth 4+0)

Remain still

The Teno is spooked by your teamates and driven closer to your hiding place, it's Medium distance away now. You stay hidden for now.

(Stealth 4+2)

((Yup, This took you guys 2-3 turns to set up, so you should have a shot at a disabling blow in return. It just happened to roll well.))

You leap back from it's leg and try to occupy it's attention snarling and snapping just out of reach. It ignores you. How embarrassing!

((Apparently, not flank attacking with Scapheap XD))

((You can't get full Ambush, it's aware it's under attack now, but you were hidden last turn so you can have a +1))

You come out of the bushes and run the short way to Close range. Resisting the urge to cry out you leap on it unawares. Your claws dig in very satisfactorily and you hold on. It tries to buck you off it's leg but is unsuccessful.

flanking strike with GWG

It takes off running as the pair of you set up to attack. You have to run after it to make it back to Medium distance.

This is weird but I just now noticed that there is no R in scapheaps's name...I think I may have been spelling it scrapheap for the last month. Sorry about that.
(It no problem, it a persevered spelling mistake from my runescape's days.)

It barrels toward you through the underbrush, you charge out at it suddenly from your hidden position but it sharply alters it's angle of movement and you miss your strike.

Keep looking to make sure there isn't a second enemy sneaking up on us.

(Can't be too careful, and you guys seem to be doing great.)

The fight is getting well underway and making rather a lot of noise. But you're reasonably sure there is nothing sneaking up on your pack. No other creatures are visible in the surrounding woods and the wind carries no scents other than Teno, that of your companions and the growing tang of blood.

The center of the fight seems to have drifted away from you. The Teno seems to be trying to escape.

close to close range and perform a leaping attack on its weakest leg latching on if successful.

You scramble rather clumsily onto it's right leg and latch on doing a little damage in the process. Blood starts flowing down it's leg.

(Move. Leap Attack 3+2 vs 2+1, 2 Damage, Wound Inflicted)

Move to cut off it escape route.

You run around in front of it and check it's travel, it seems like it can't figure out how to get past you.

Deffo need this turn before that Tento, hopefully I can disable this leg. Don't presume I can leap attack... cos I'm on it, but all the same :P)

Wild Attack that Leg. Keep Clinging

You do your best to bite and tear, but do only limited damage as the creature twists and thrashes under you.

(Attack 4+2 vs 4+1, Damage 2)

Quote from: Teno
Shake off enemies, flee if possible

It's have trouble getting anywhere with Hunters on two of it's legs it tries to shake them off thrusting it's rear legs off the ground and twisting back and forth. The hunters ride this out with ease.

(Buck 5 Vigor spent: 1, 2. Failures.)

It bellows in frustration unsure what to do or where to go with scapheap blocking it's path.

Action: Chase and gnaw that injured leg!

You lunge and snap at the flailing leg of the Teno but it can't make contact.

(Attack 3+2 vs 6+1, Miss)

Continue the chase! Attempt to attack it, ideally hitting a leg!

You catch up with it this time. And arbitrarily picking the left leg you rake it with your claws, neatly avoiding the parts Maxinum is hanging onto. Blood gushes from the wounds.

(Attack 10-1 vs 5+1, 6 damage, Wound inflicted)

Ok, get closer for an attack.

You jog easily up to Medium range. The fight seems to be going well, both of it's back legs are now injured.

Yes, and we could also sit around and debate the philosophical ramifications of a group of predators attacking a weaker adversary in hopes of reaching some sort of tithing system where the weaker animals will give away their dead/dying to the predators to end their suffering, keep the predators fed, and the non-dying herbivores keep not being dead.

But that's for cowards! The good folks at home are paying to watch these savage bastards rip poor defenseless children to fucking shreds! They paid to watch a raptor track and hunt a defenseless creature before it tears the screaming bastard limb from mother fuckin' limb! So I salute our blood thirsty contestants and remind them that failing to please the crowd results in less bloody food to eat.

hahaha...wait... that's an interesting idea thematically. I'm writing that down for future reference in RPG play. Although you're right in an overtly combat only game it would be a bit odd.

2) At this point, wouldn't it be wiser to wait until it runs out of vigor?
I'm 60-70% certain that raptors didn't hunt like that.

Considering the inherent problems with stating absolutely how raptors hunted I won't presume to tell you guys what to do. I will however point out that quite a few predators strike a serious wound then retreat until the prey is weakened by blood loss.

I made sure that the game play would support this, so it's there if you want it. On the individual scale you can spend turns resting out of reach, or if you all agree we can skip forward several minutes until the next interesting thing happens.

It's thrashing too much and you can't do more damage.

Get up, find an opportunity to strike one of the uninjured (or the least-injured) limbs!

Move to Body. Attack Body.

It rushes toward you, striking a glancing blow. You respond by once again mauling it's face and latching onto it's nose with your jaws.

You realize that it's going to have a lot of trouble moving with it's head restrained.

(Attack 7+1 vs 4, hit dmg 8 HELD status effect applied)
(5 dmg taken)

Action: Imma get that tail! Wild Attack!

You destroy major musculature in it's tail. It bleats pitifully and staggers!

lol well quite possibly. That was a general statement though. "Something interesting" would just be the next real decision point. Certainly if there was an interruption, but also if it ran off or attacked, or just plain died as expected. It would be one turn until one of those happened, not like 20 where everyone just typed "I wait another 10 seconds" for the next real-time month.

Post by: Joben on November 20, 2013, 03:13:56 pm
Action: Continue wild attacks on the tail! Rip it off and carry it away!

With mastahcheese pulling from the front and you from the rear it's in a very trough position, and although it struggles mightily you succeed in tearing off a large chunk of it's tail.

It shudders and falls to the ground. It was barely standing before and this last trauma is too much.

(Attack 9+5 vs 9+1, dmg 8 )

Attack the head

It's rear end flops over and mastah is holding it's nose, it is in an advantageous position for your to strike.

You rip flesh from it's neck and the base of it's skull.

(Attack 5+3 vs 3+1, dmg 8 )

Attack the body.

Your killclaw punches a few more holes in it's side.

(4+3 vs 3+1, dmg 6)

Quote from: Teno
punch mastahcheese in the face.

(Attack 7-1 vs 2+1, dmg 15)

Eat the leg

You tear into it's meaty leg putting an end of all possibility of it standing back up. You swallow a yummy chunk of warm Teno.

(Attack 4+5 vs 4+1, dmg 8 )

Attack body.

You lay into the body of the prone beast doing catastrophic damage. Ribs break and you penetrate it's chest wall. It coughs and wheezes.

(Attack 10+4 vs 2+1, dmg 22...geeze)

Don't let go, try to use my Cunning to get it so smack it's head into a tree by mistake, or something.

Be awesome.

Your desire to lead it into smacking it's head into something is foiled by circumstance; it's back legs give out and it flops onto the ground.

It batters you repeatedly in the face with it's bony fore-paws. It hurts a lot but you hold on. That's kinda awesome. (15 damage taken)

You rake it's face with your claws doing more damage.

(Attack 7+3 vs 5+1 dmg 8 )

((Next turn it's going to die twice, either from blood loss, or if anyone kicks it in the chest again. So lets skip the paperwork on that turn. You won!))

The Teno is bleeding from dozens of gaping wounds. It's lungs are collapsing and it barely seems to notice as Mastah and Scrapheap succeed in dis-articulating it's skull. Dwarmin actually manages to break off it's tail which twitches in a really amusing manner for several seconds. Unholy has a nice leg all to himself while GreatWyrm and Maxinum burrow into it's body for nutritious organs.

Spoiler: omnomnom (click to show/hide)

Several minutes of peace and blissful enjoyment pass.

You hear a chirp of greeting. Standing some distance away is a beautiful female raptor. She is heavy with muscle and fat and her plumage is lush.

Spoiler: Femme Fatal (click to show/hide)

It takes a second but then alarm bells start going off in your brains. She's much too big. "Not Us!" The hints of her scent you can catch even though she's downwind aren't right. "NOT OUR KIND!"

((She's a Utahraptor, and is about twice as big as you. And I'll say for mechanical purposes she is at Very Far distance.))

She chirps again. The 'language' is similar to your own, the meaning clear. "That's a nice kill you have there. It's mine now. Go away or fight me."

There is a rustling in the bushes a ways to her left.

Toehook was still playing with the twitchy tasty tail that was all his.

"You can have what's left after we're done..." He says in slightly awestruck tones. He had never seen one of those kind before. He knew she would eat him rather than share a kill, but she was pretty to look at all the same. So he continued eating, waiting for something to happen.

...Come to think of it, he couldn't remember ever having seeing anything. He knew what a 'teno' was, but couldn't recall consciously seeing or tasting one before this moment. In fact, he didn't even remember being born. Where was this place, he idly wondered-and why couldn't they leave? He was sure it was the same area-his nose could still detect Bigtooth blood under the dirt and ground, very deep and with strange smells over it. But the land itself was different every time...

But, then there was a pleasant click somewhere in the back of his skull, and he stopped thinking about any of it.

Action: Continue eating, ignoring the pretty raptoress request

She seems completely unconvinced by your argument.

(6 vs 6+2)

''We did. That bigtooth was HELL, but not only did we bring it down, none of us died! FEAR US!''

Sense roll, see if she's accompanied by anything and where it is.

You are pretty sure the rustling in the bushes that happened earlier was made by a second large raptor. She appears to have a friend who is trying to keep out of sight.

(Sense 5-1 vs ???)

((Dang, I get pretty beat up back there))

Continue eating, under the hopes that it infuriates the female, and causes her to charge, leaving her open to the pincer move by GWG and Unholy.

I still get my +2 cunning!

(You're ok now, most of the damage faded after the fight. It was just a good solid punch that left you dazed.))

You eat some more meat. She doesn't seem to care at all, which is a bit odd. (Cunning 6+2)

Toehook was still playing with the twitchy tasty tail that was all his.

You mutter at the raptoress between mouthfuls. She stares hard at you for a few seconds looking you up and down.

Hang back but hard stare her

Yep that sure is a big lady raptor.

(Sense 2+1.)

"Well if you will not yield I will have to call my Sisters. We will kill you all."

Red turns to face back the way she came and lets forth a keening call of the type used to summon pack members from a great distance.

This could be a problem.

*bump*

Scapheap, I PM'ed you the other day but got no response, hoping you see this.

You are guarding your kill from interlopers. There's a really big lady raptor and her hidden male friend. They're at Far/Very Far distance. Everyone else is pretty much hanging back and arguing with them. What do?

It hasn't been crazy long yet so it's not a big deal, but he's been on the forums elsewhere so I figure he's just missed this when it was on the first page or two. ...unless he wants to attack or go off somewhere on his own his options are limited though. So if I don't here from him by sometime on Friday I'll auto his character to do something conservative. I don't really like letting my game's update rate creep over a week.

((Piffff. There goes my plan to ambush them easily...now watch me fall out of a tree!

Anyway, my rundown-this battle is gonna be quick and ugly. Probably for us. We've got five hunters since scapheap got himself killed. Everyone needs to concentrate on one at a time-the sister to start-bring her down so she can't move. They can probably take one of us out in one or two turns, and I believe it might take us two or three or more turns to do the same to them, with everyone attacking-but if we take out even one quick enough, they lose a big advantage, which is their big offense over us. The numbers sort of like, I believe, we can do max 50 damage a turn, they can do 75-they 600 HP in all, we have...500 HP...well, you get the picture. Losing Scapheap put as at a major advantage (the numbers pre-ambush are fairly equal) but he's dead now so he can't ruin anymore turns!

So, it's going to be real close. Right? :P In truth, probably not. With one already down and one moderately injured, we're almost certainly not going to win-chomping through 200 HP each is not very likely in the time we have before they begin to kill us off, so make it count and go for the body or the head, and hope for enough damage to incap them. So lets go out fighting, yeah!

An alternate plan is for someone (maximum or dreich) to rush the Queen and grapple/hamper/play defense/block-you'll keep her out of play and whoever is enticed to help her-at worse, they all attack you and you at least are in defensive stance, which lowers damage overall. Best case, we're holding one down and swarming it, the queen is being tanked, and there's one drifting to either side.

You'll die very likely, yes, but we'll be holding down the second and the third, or at least one of them. It splits their numbers and gives the rest of us a chance to swarm.))

Toehook clicked to Cheese (an odd name for a hunter!) to distract an opponent while he snuck through the branches, looking for a target.

Action: Move through the tree tops as quiet as I can! Find a target I can hopefully leap upon who is unaware! If possible, use furious aerial flanking sneak attack strike with Mastacheese.

In a slightly unorthodox flanking maneuver with Dwarmin plummeting from above and Cheese running in on the ground the pair of you strike Sister. Cheese grabs her neck doing significant damage and holding on. Dwarmin slams into her from above with a gravity assisted jump-kick.

(Cheese 10+1 vs 2+2, Hit 14 damage, to head. Wound inflicted)

(Stealth 5: Att +1) (Dwarmin 6+5 vs 2+2, Hit 14+4 damage to body. Wound Inflicted)

A second later with a terrifying shriek Red leaps on Dwarmin. Wrapping her forelimbs around him and kicking with her enormous foot claws opening gaping wounds. (42 damage taken!)

In turn though she is leapt on by Unholy, releasing Dwarmin from her grasp!

We've got five hunters since scapheap got himself killed.

I can claw his neck

((You sure can.))

You claw at the male raptor's neck drawing a trickle of blood. It yelps and lets go of you.

You are feeling incredibly tired.

It bites you in the neck again. There's an odd popping noise and you drift to sleep. Forever.

Leaping latch attack on red, defend afterwards.

((You can do the first but no the second in the same turn. They're both Major Actions and you only get one.))

You don't do much damage, but you do manage to grab hold of her and maker her let to of Dwarmin.

I didn't feel much concern for the characters, which I realized during the monkey-attack scene where the monkeys kindly chose to attack one or two at a time. Keep biting neck, use Cunning to keep them from attacking others, if possible.

EDIT: Coordinate with Dwarmin

(Hmmm...ok I guess you can do that. At least for the two nearest you. Red is otherwise engaged.)

Action: Coordinated strike with masta on the sister! While he's biting, I flank! Go for the head!

Sister shifts to a defensive stance and calls out for help.

Cheese continues biting her but doesn't hurt her more. However (Cunning 5+2) he manages to shift positions around so that he's the Hunter most directly in front of both Sister and Mate. It's unlikely they will attack anyone else.

Dwarmin strikes at Sister's face but only scratches her.

(Cheese 9+1 vs 9+3)
(Dwarmin 6+3 vs 5+3, dmg 2)

Mate comes to her defense and leaps on Cheese freeing Sister from his grasp.
(Cheese, 24 dmg taken)

"You're going to pay for that, you know."
Attack the body! Aim for the vitals!

You catastrophically miss whoever it was that you were attacking! They swipe you with their claws in a quick counter-blow.

(Attack 2-1 vs 6+?, botch 4 dmg taken)

Quote from: Mate
Leap Attack Cheese because I wanted to get Sister loose anyway and Cheese sorta insisted. Move with Sister if she is freed.

(Attack 7+2 vs 3, dmg 24)

Quote from: Sister
I'm scared, spend for total defense. Move away if I'm freed.

(Def +2)
(+2 Vigor Spent)

Quote from: Red
Wild Attack Unholy so i can move freely. Maneuver.

(1+3 vs 9, botch 2 dmg taken)

omnomnom the one im on

You continue attacking Red, hitting the same location as last time, doing slight damage to her body.

(3+1 vs 2+1, dmg 2)

She strikes furiously at you but you dodge easily and scratch her on the nose as she tries to bite you. (2 dmg dealt, head)

Then she starts moving away from the melee and despite your resistance pulls you along with her!

Wild furious attack Mate's face. Hopefully, I can blind this one, and Sister gets beaten to a pulp and we can concentrate on the queen.

Before you can get to him Mate strikes Cheese, then moves off a little ways with Sister. You follow and try to maul his face, and do moderate damage.

(6+2 vs 4+1, dmg 6)

Mate and Sister move out from the melee then turn back the face the group of you. They squawk something unintelligible at Red.

Red does the same on the other side (3, marginal failure, lost some Vigor) finding it difficult to move with Unholy hanging onto her. But she manages to gain a little distance.

(This was their minor actions after attack/defend)

This places two moves distance between Red and the other two. The pair of smaller foes on one side, and Red on the other. Dwarmin, Mastahcheese and GreatWyrmGold are in the middle, one move from either side.

Maxinum is near Mate and Sister. Unholy is near Red.

Wild Attack on sister!

(I picked arbitrarily between her two injured areas. You're hitting Body.)

You score a fairly good hit on her.

(Attack 7+3 vs 6+1, dmg 6)
(+2 Vigor Spent)

But she hits you back harder. (16 dmg taken)

Quote from: Sister
Fight

(Cunning 3) You are distracted and don't coordinate with your packmate.

(Attack 10+1 vs 7, dmg 16)

Quote from: Mate

(Cunning 2) You are distracted and don't coordinate with your packmate.

As Maxinum moves in you strike wildly at him.

(Wild Attack 10+2 vs 6+0, dmg 24)
(+2 Vigor, -1 Def)

(I'll just hopefully add a wound to Mate, should get their vigor down quicker, then yeah)

Wild Leap Attack Mate's Face.

Mate scores a painful hit on you as you move in. (24 dmg taken)

You respond with equal wildness, uncaring of risk. You injure his head drawing blood.

(Attack 3+2 vs 4+0, dmg 2, Wound Inflicted)
(+7 Vigor spent, -1 Def)

Looking at Vigor...if we can't end this soon, we're dead. And trying to end it sooner ruins our remaining time.

Charge at Sister Red, attacking the legs and/or climbing up.

You charge at Red, but she twists out of the way!

(8-1 vs 10+1)

Quote from: Red
Fury Strike the most injured on within reach.

(Sense 4+2) That's Unholy.

You twist around and claw frantically at him but he wriggles out of the way.

(Fury Attack 3+2 vs 6)

Switch target to Red, flanking with whoever available!

((Hey joben, if we all dogpile onto a single critter with holding attacks do the deence penalties stack?

Cheese attacks very clumsily from one side, and is only saved from a painful reprisal by the distraction of Unholy on the other side.

Unholy struggles against Red and she trips and falls over!

(Cheese 4 vs 9+1. Counter Averted by flank.)

(That mess seems worthy of a unified narrative description)

Sister manages to control her momentary panic. Once again clearheaded, she and Mate call back and forth and turn their attention on Dwarmin. Before they can act, Dwarmin slams into her with a mighty shriek. Perhaps by luck or skill he trips her and she sprawls on the ground. She frantically claws at him, her feet slipping in the muddy forest floor, but her claws find no purchase.

With a roar Mate comes to his companion's aid. A vicious kick lands near the base of Dwarmin's tail sending bright flares of pain through the young Hunter's body.

Maxinum leaps high into the air aiming for Mate, but badly misjudges his position. He lands with a thump, his claws tearing furrows in the leaf litter that covers the ground.

Sister manages to get her legs working at last and rises to face her foes. She is breathing heavily from exertion, but notes with satisfaction that her opponents appear to be nearly exhausted.

Meanwhile a few yards to the East.

Attack Red's head/neck area while she's down! Try to cut an important artery.

She twists her head away from your strike causing you to miss. You almost trip over her neck but regain your footing.

(Attack 9-1 vs 9-1, Clash 6, err...Red falls over more. Well at least it wasn't you.)

tear at reds most injured bodypart, keep her held down in a way that makes it difficult to attack us.

((I assumed i was on her back for some reason.))

You try to tear more but the way she's thrashing around barely hurt her more. She tries to twist around and bite you, but is unsuccessful.

Quote from: Red

(Fury +5 Vigor Spend)

Fury on Red's head! Keep her down!

Unfortunately she has already managed to rise, but you strike her a mighty blow across the face and hold on!

You've got the proverbial bull by the horns (What the heck is a bull?), this is either the best or worst development for you so far.

Attack Red's head.

Your claws rake across her skull, nicking a vein. Blood flows down her neck.

(Attack 6+0 vs 4+1, dmg 2, Wound Inflicted)

She lunges forward pressing down on you with her weight, but you slip to the side and she hits the ground!

(Red rolls badly on a struggle check)

attack red, hold her again.

A powerful twist of her body sends you toppling from your position on her back. You stumble, wrenching an ankle, but remain standing.

(Attack 2+2 vs 8+1, Botch 6 dmg taken, no longer Holding)

Quote from: Red
Ow, my beautiful face! Make him pay!

(2+0 vs 1+1, clash 1 Red Falls prone!)

Beat Red's head in viciously and don't let go.

Red falls over greatly aiding your efforts to maul her. You grip her skull in your jaws and shake viciously, repeatedly slamming her head into the forest floor.

(Attack 7+4 vs 7+1, dmg 6)

Action: Moar wild attacks on sisters  body!

((Sorry, was away. We're likely not going to win anyway, so why not just roll out the rest of the combat in one go? I sense people dont care about a losing fight.))

You kick at Sister but she twists out of the way. She tries to bite you but you slap her away with your foreclaws.

Mate tries to tackle you but it doesn't go well, he trips and falls over, right before Maxinum leaps on him!

(Cunning 5) Mate is in a very bad position. It would take almost everything you have left, but you might be able to put him to death while he's down. ((You can get a +8 against him next turn. 15% chance of killing him outright by yourself if you spend everything. 50% with Maxinum's help too.))

(Attack 4+2 vs 6+1, miss.)

FIRE EVERYTHING!

You leap on mate and tear with great fury, if not with great accuracy. He is severely bloodied.

The effort leaves you gasping for breath. You are seconds away from exhaustion.

(2+8 vs 3+1, dmg 12, bad roll but still solid)

Quote from: Mate
Claw and anything I can reach. Attempt to rise at end of turn against whoever is holding me.

(Attack 1 vs 1...not even going ot add the modifiers. He misses.)

(5-1) Mate struggles back to a more or less standing position at the end of the turn, despite Dwarmin's efforts to keep him down.

Quote from: Sister
Decide who to help

You're a bit panicked. (Cunning 2+1) and instead of attempting to finish of the severely wounded Hunter nearby you rush away to help your sister. You never really liked Mate anyway.

(Sister double moves and spends +2 Vigor to still attack after switching groups)

Quote from: Maxinum's Standing Orders
Follow plan...errr ok fine, Help Dwarmin finish this jerk.

Somehow you fail to do any damage, and are exhausted by the effort.

(Attack 1+6 vs 10+1)

Black spots swim before your eyes, you gasp for breath, swaying slightly. With no fight left in you for now you let go and move away so you can get your breath back.

Leap onto and otherwise attack Red's head.

You leap on Red. Your claws scrape along her skull across her left eye socket and through her jaw muscle on the same side.

(Attack 7+2 vs 4+1, dmg 8, Wound Inflicted, Impaired Vision Inflicted )

Leap onto and otherwise attack Red's head.
Assist this, don't let her get back up!

Red struggles in your grip. You tighten your hold and manage to keep her down for now.

(Attack 1+3 vs 3+1, Clash 5...that would knock her over if she wasn't already. I'm going to be generous and say that keeps her down for another turn.)

Leap onto and otherwise attack Red's head.
Assist this, don't let her get back up!

How low does Red's head's HP need to be before her brains splatter out? Or at least get damaged enough that she stops moving?

Attack Red's head if this is a possibility. If not, go for the belly if proneness negates the attack penalty. Otherwise, bite/claw the neck.

Action: One...more...attack...on Mate...

With spots swimming before your eyes you make one more strike against your enemy landing a successful blow.

Your chest feels strange though. As you struck him he in turn struck back. You look down just in time to see a claw as long as your snout being withdrawn from your body.

It doesn't hurt as much as it probably should. You feel yourself letting go of Mate and slumping to the ground, then the world slips away.

(Attack 6+4 vs 7+1, dmg 4)

(20 Damage taken, Death.)

Attack

(Attack 7+1 vs 2+1, dmg 20)

Maxinum stands some distance away from the fights gasping for breath. His muscles are twitching so he leans against a tree.

(Recovers 5 Vigor)

Switch over to the sister, attack her wounded areas!

(6 vs 1+1, dmg 8, Wound inflicted)

(Cunning 4+2) Sister is very shaky on her feet and blood is pouring from her wounds. You think she is seconds from inevitable collapse.

-----------------------------------

Red struggles helplessly on the ground he neck pinned by mastahcheese. Unholy and GreatWrymGold close in and pound her vulnerable head mercilessly. Bones shatter and arteries tear. Red's body suddenly goes limp.

Sister, ferociously slams into Unholy pulling him away from his victim. Letting go of Red's lifeless neck Mastahcheese rounds on Sister. He kicks sending a foot-claw deep into her side as she mauls Unholy. Despite her fury Sister is clearly at the very end of her strength.

Mate looks up from Dwarmin's corpse and shrieks with rage.

Toehook floats away, his last thoughts fluttering like...well, butterflies. His last thoughts are on gossamer wings. What else would a young hunter prey upon?

The battle fades away with a vague sense of having done his part. He falls into memory-the layer below the conscious one, which is already hazy and blood covered and growing cold. He flees deeper into his mind.

He remembers his father telling him to be patient when hunting, and quick-waiting till they land. Otherwise they would fly away. A clumsy jump meant more waiting. Sometimes it was almost enough to drive him mad, but he persisted. He always considered himself persistent. He recalls in perfect clarity, the first one he caught-a large one, with large beautiful wings of red and gold, like the time of year where the leaves changed and the wind was cold. He examines it once more, feeling the same joy he felt so long ago. He'll show his father and mother later...though, there really will be no later. On some level he knows this. On another, he knows this will never end. This echo will reverberate for an eternity, even when his conscious body fades-the flash of a neuron knows no constraints of time and space. He will leave this echo as a marker of who he was, and move on.

The coldness sinks deeper-the sky turns blood red, then black. The world around him fragmenting, as his body slowly dies-only echoes and shades remain. This oblivion he knows he cannot outrun...yet, he is not afraid. There is time for one last journey. He goes. He goes deeper-back to the nest, the first scents, the tastes. His first mate. His first real kill. Even in the mind of such a creature as he, there are many rooms-many places to explore...but, he only has a short time, however. Deeper and deeper he must go, to the very center.

At last he comes to a place very familiar to him-a warm place, with no memories and no pain. The only constants are the sound of his mothers heartbeat, as steady as the waves on the shore. A thin, yet hard barrier between him and the cruel and beautiful and amazing world he was born into-fragile, yet enough to shelter his little life. He coils into this sanctuary as the waves of cold and dark close in, and let's himself sleep in its embrace, letting go, falling, drifting. The last thing he hears is the first thing he heard-the heart, beating.

And then, it stops.

He at last remarks birth and death seems not so different, after all.

((Ding dong, the queen is dead!))

Ironclaw smirked, or rather opened her mouth slightly, which raptors do instead of smirking. "We have defeated your queen. Run, Big Ones, run."

Intimidate. Charge at, leap at, and attack Sister's body (Lead/Fury attack. -5 Vigor.)

(( *Sniff* Beautiful. ))

Kill the sister. Make her pay with all my Fury.

You wrestle with Sister, it isn't going well and you can feel her claws on your hide. Then she slowly goes limp.

(Attack 3+1 vs 7+1, Miss)

"told you id beat you." sighs pariah to red before staggering off exhaustedly.

Defend, move away from sister and mate if possible.

You walk, slightly unsteadily over towards where Maxinum is also resting.

(12 Vigor Recovered, nice roll!)

Maxinum continues leaning on the tree and starts licking his wounds. (+4 Vigor)

Quote from: Sister
With my last breath...

With blind rage, Sister strikes at the nearest combatant that was involved in her sister's death. Then she faints, her lifeblood seeping from an overwhelming number of small wounds.

(Attack 5+3 vs 7, dmg 4)

(Vigor deep into negative, loss of consciousness, death.)

-5 Vigor.)

You fail to do damage, but she faints anway from injury and overexertion.

(Attack 9+0 vs 10+1, miss)

Sister is in no condition to pay attention to your threats. ((And OOC Mate doesn't care, at least yet. He saw Red go down, but there is no way he would consider retreat until he can inspect her and be sure she's dead.))

Quote from: Mate
Run up attack someone near Red's body. Be desperate.

He grabs hold of mastahcheese and starts tearing into him.

(Attack 9+3 vs 7+1, dmg 16)

--------------------------------

((At this point there are 4 of you that could attack Mate next turn. And he can only take 8 more damage. The odds of him surviving even one more round are very slim So...))

Mate claws Mastahcheese one more time before the rest of you regroup and tear him to bits. (Attack 5+4 vs 5+1, dmg 12)

This area of the forest is a mess. The ground torn by the scramble of clawed feet. The ferns and tree trunks splattered with blood. Six bodies, of friends and foes, predators and prey, lie here and there amongst the underbrush. You have won.

Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.* This is the way of The Arena.

Mourn the dead. Consider eating them if we have to stah here long enough.

Eat reds heart, gain her power!

You do so. It's big and still twitching a little when you manage to pull it out. Very strong. You are sure it contains much power.

Eat the Sister's heart. And other meat.

Mourn the dead. Consider eating them if we have to stah here long enough.

Do this as well. Except I'll take Red's brains.

You do so with great relish, savoring the delicious evidence of your hard-won victory.

Careful examination of your fallen comrades reveals that they are quite dead. There is nothing to do but make the signs of recognition and respect common to your kind one final time.

There is so much meat around you have no need to consider consuming your fallen. So much in fact that even eating only the most choice bits from the big ones and the teno you slew earlier you are soon stuffed full.

Eventually it's time to go. The Arena begins that slow shift to freezing temperatures that inevitably drives you back to your cell.

Around this time you notice that Maxinum is gone. None of you are quite sure when he left. The only spoor you find is on the path heading back to your cell. Perhaps he returned early to sleep. But when you enter he is not there and the door closes behind you. This is no doubt distressing, but there is nothing to be done. Full bellies and exhausted limbs soon have their way and you all fall asleep. You have strange dreams from which you cannot wake. Swarms of little bugs bite you, but their stings bring no pain, only relief.
