"So the forge is set up, the fuel ready to go. Fetch the bronze bars for me so I can make our picks and get this fortress in the ground"
"... I thought you brought the bars"
So I uh, forgot to bring metal bars on my new fortress and I don't have any picks, as is my normal practice. I have 3 masons and a weaponsmith. Zero metal. The only wood is the three from the wagon. Fortunately I did settle on a reasonably wooded area.
Time to do it the hard way. Cutting down trees with training axes gets a small hut with a few beds in it built. then a retaining wall. then a Depot. The guilded glassmaker points out that we have sand, and plenty of resources to make coke with :)
wood to planks. planks to blocks in the woodcrafters shop. blocks to anvils ( ;D) in the stonecrafters shop. random wooden crafts from the craftsdwarf shop. Research study built. Took 4 tries to research glassforging.
The first picks were made when the dwarf caravan showed up in the fall. I'm a half a year behind on fort/defense construction. This should be interesting.

This sounds like the brilliant intro to a succession fortress... to bad it isn't. It also sounds like something commonplace amongst the Dwarven world, somehow...

This is awesome. :)
I'm actually fond of 'shipwreck' embarks, zero resources adjacent to a large lake or ocean. One of them ended up being partially documented on tumblr (http://gildrounded.tumblr.com/). :)
