Hey all, i'm starting some guitar lessons pretty soon and my teacher has asked me to find some songs that I would be interested in learning to play and sing at the same time. However, given I don't really have any preference I figured Bay12 might be a good jumping-off point. So if you guys know songs you enjoy singing and playing please tell them to me! Preferably they've got chords. My teacher asked me to find two and i've already gotten one but like I side I figured Bay12 might help with the other.
Thanks, peeps.

Freebird :P
But seriously, you'll likely want something with just a couple of chords, so try Ring of Fire, Knocking on Heaven's Door and ballads like that.

Wonderwall is the classic douchebag-wants-to-impress-people-with-his-not-so-1337-guitar-skillz song, but it's a good song in its own right and a good chord changing excercise. If you want a song nobody is tired of hearing over and again from random guitar-carrying folk, Steam Powered Giraffe's Honeybee (http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/s/steam_powered_giraffe/honey_bee_ver4_crd.htm) (youtube link) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojYK6CW8gdw)is very easy on the chords, has a nice, reasonably simple fingerpicking intro, and if you want to be singing at the same time might be pretty cool.

back in the days, I thought myself the basics of guitar using some Nirvana songs. A lot of them are very easy to learn.

I first started playing guitar about a week after Nirvana's Nevermind came out. Yeah, I'm that old.
However, in retrospect, cutting my teeth on the bad habits of a piss-poor punk guitarist probably set me back a few years' worth of learning.
What I recommend to my students generally draws from the works of Paul Simon (http://www.azchords.com/s/simonandgarfunkel-tabs-3576.html), Leonard Cohen (http://www.azchords.com/l/leonardcohen-tabs-25225.html#songs0), and Soul Asylum (http://www.azchords.com/s/soulasylum-tabs-3699.html#songs0), on the simple, sweet side;
For pop, it's hard to beat Beck (http://www.azchords.com/b/beck-tabs-415.html), Foo Fighters (http://www.azchords.com/f/foofighters-tabs-1517.html), and Death Cab for Cutie (http://www.azchords.com/d/deathcabforcutie-tabs-1055.html);
On the rock/punk side of things, Dinosaur Jr. (http://www.azchords.com/d/dinosaurjr-tabs-1136.html), Green Day (http://www.azchords.com/g/greenday-tabs-1705.html), and Ween (http://www.azchords.com/w/ween-tabs-4712.html) come to mind.
Of course, even more important than anything I may have to say, is what do your own ears tell you? If you're to pursue guitar, and music in general, it's vital to develop your own ear - not just for motivation to learn new things, but also as the first step to developing your own voice.
The best song to learn is probably the last one you found yourself singing in the shower.
(The above should be taken with the caveat that the poster is, as is probably obvious, a product of the 1990's).
I've been playing for just over 20 years, now - and would be glad to help any new players who truly want to learn. The real trick is to just play, play play - it's far better to be a piss-poor guitar player, than just a guitar *owner.*
...but I ramble.

Thanks,
i dont really need help learning the guitar however I'm just uncharacteristically cocky tonight. The lessons are mostly voice, as well as some more technical aspects of guitar. I'm self-taught but I also take guitar class at school along with aforementioned lessons... which is to say I end up playing for two to three hours almost everyday, many times more.
Unfortunately the only things I sing in the shower are songs from les mis. So I wanted to get something a little easier for me, which I did: my teacher ended up having me learn Ring of Fire and some holiday jingles, both to play and to sing. (Although I did ask for her to teach me a couple of greenday songs down the line.)
Anyways, thanks for all your suggestions guys.

How about Jorma Kaukonen's Genesis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU1YASW3rhc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU1YASW3rhc) It's quite easy to play.
