A blind cave ogre ripped it out of his teeth. :'( How bad is it? Do I kill her to end her misery? She uses a sword and a shield with the same hand. How effective is it?
I sense she will lose her other arm. Can dwarves fight with their stumps training the wrestler skill?
-
She can still fight, so no need to arrange an accident or anything.
Without both hands dwarves become fairly useless, unfortunately. They can no longer do jobs or even clean themselves. They can still eat and drink though.
Their combat suffers quite a bit without hands, as they cannot use weapons. Though they can still kick, bite, and can somewhat wrestle. However, grappling with a non-grasp body part is not very effective.

If she doesn't have her own squad, give her one. A legendary veteran, mutilated in the line of duty? She needs recognition, and you need to encourage that kind of courage and spirit.
Also, set up an awesome tomb for her final rest, when she finally settles down. She's earned it.
-
Yeah, give her a squad. She can train others and maybe pass on the skills.
-
Excellent ideas. She has 130 kills to her name.
The only problem is that I have to use select individuals everytime.

If she lost only one arm she will keep fighting like nothing happened, before the next version of dwarf fortress we can grasp multiple objects in one hand without penalty.

Yep. My most distinguished soldier I've ever had in Dwarf Fortress lost his arm in the an early battle, then racked up almost a hundred kills. That may not seem like much in comparison to others, but I like to keep a large standing army of at least fifty on call at all times.

I give custom professions for my soldiers, all male farmers are "recruits", they may get recruited when times get rough.
Standing army gets the custom job ralated to their skill("swordsdwarf").
Whenever a soldier loses a arm or leg or something, they gain the custom profession "veteran" and never more get into a battle during their life (and never see the sun too, but that is another issue.)

Why would you punish your seasoned warriors with retirement? If they have at least one arm and leg they can fight, and should go out fighting!

I just give my military dwarves numbers. For example, my militia commander will be nicknamed One-One while the dwarf after him will be named One-Two. One(squad's number)-Two(place in squad). It helps keep it more organized, since I automatically know which squad and which position whatever dwarf is in.

I usually remember the name of the important dwarves, recruits shouldn't be remembered at all, and legendary dwarves only arrive by year 5 or 6 of the fort ayway...(for me, that is.)

Man, they all have fought to their limit, they are all males, most of them married, with chldren to feed, I would never throw a soldier with missing limbs to fight(because this thin down the chance of lucky strikes, the ones with a "!" besides the attack). They qould die and let a widow taking care of her children in a already awful word, we don't need orphans.
