Title: Depths of Boatmurdered - free game inspired by the LP
Post by: Eldiran on March 24, 2014, 01:41:43 pm
Heya! I think this is the right place to post this, but if not let me know.  I made a game about that one Let's Play, Boatmurdered! http://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Boatmurdered/ (http://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Boatmurdered/)  The game's called

It's a top-down horror game that's about 2 hours long. It takes place in the ancient ruins of Boatmurdered.

It strikes me as ironic that a game would model a dwarf, which originated in a system that did not use hp bars, with hp bars.

This looks awesome! I shall definitely check it out when I have a chance. :)

@Above: That's a strange thing to find ironic, since they are completely different kinds of game, and a complex DF-style wound system would be both unnecessary and somewhat out of the game's scope...

I should have noted more prominently -- the game doesn't attempt to emulate any of the mechanics or lore of Dwarf Fortress (other than what is important to Boatmurdered). At most some of the level design is taken from the maps of Boatmurdered.

@Yoink: thanks! Hope you like it :D

...that really isn't irony, though it's true Norse mythology did not use HP bars.

Downloading now, will try it out.

I've played it a bit now.  It's great.  Here is my review:

This game is very good. Great atmosphere, awesome sounds and music. The ambiance is genuinely creepy, and yes...I got scared. My wife was even making fun of me for whimpering and complaining at several points: "You're a grown ass man!" Then I let her put the headphones on for a while, and she understood better.

The crossbow is awesome, and the monsters are done well. Especially when you first encounter them.  They make me uncomfortable -- in a good way.

For such a simple game, I'd say -- Nailed it! My one only gripe is that dwarfs can see in the dark...but perhaps a place like boatmurdered is so cursed that their eyes cannot pierce the unnatural blackness without a lantern.

To the maker:  Well done, man!
To other users:  Give this a try, it's worth your while. :)

@g2knee: thank you! I'm glad it was enjoyable... and scary  ;D

As for the darkness, your explanation works for me. : P

Well done, Elidran.

I'm fairly sure that, at some point, DF used simple health numbers. That may have very well been in the version that Boatmurdered used.

Naw. We've always had the limb system.

This looks neat, though.

Didn't undead have health points? They certainly did in v0.31. (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.31:Undead)

Yeah. That's undead. They used the normal system until that was broken for them, and a placeholder HP was introduced for that specifically.

I think Toady's changing the undead-HP system this next version, too. "Pulping" or somesuch was mentioned.

Anyway, as to the game, I shall download and play it momentarily.

Excited to try this out.

It also largely ignores established Dwarf Fortress lore (I haven’t played any Dwarf Fortress).
You should. You really should. :P

Edit: Played it through. It's really good - I was actually impressed. I'm surprised you didn't put Toady One or even Dwarf Fortress in the credits, though. (Actually, that makes me kind of concerned. Why didn't you put Dwarf Fortress or Tarn in the credits? :-\ Or even better, a link to Bay12.)
Also, the bosses were kind of GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere, but, the fights were fun anyway.

Correction: where do you find the first weapon, 'cause I don't know where it is and keep being killed by the first creature.

Avoid the first creature. You'll find the weapon later - it's a crossbow. It only stuns.

Oh, believe me, I tried to play Dwarf Fortress. I really respect it, but I eventually found making my own game was easier than properly learning to play : P

And you make a very good point... I'm not sure why I didn't think to credit Dwarf Fortress/Tarn. Even if I didn't draw from it directly, it would have been a nice tip of the hat. If I release a patch, I'll include that.

Aye, excellent work all around. Wouldn't have minded some more DF references, but that's just me being nitpicky. Very great job. And glad to hear about the patch thing - who knows, you might draw some people to DF yourself. :)

Some of them only attack you if you stand in front of them and shine your light in their faces.
