Title: Minecraft 1.8: Oceanic Ruins, Bunnies & More! - Survival Multiplayer

The Bountiful Update
Spoiler: FEATURES (click to show/hide)

Howdy!

Over nine thousand Minecraft days in and still going strong. Our humble ensemble has grown into a core group of dedicated Minecraftians in addition to a myriad of casual contributors. The success of our silly, little mess has exceeded my wildest expectations and this is due almost entirely to the unprecedented involvement of our amazing community. We still have a bit more room to grow, I would like to extend an invitation to you. No, not you with the finger in the nose, the one next to you. Yeah, YOU!

Our world is rich with unique history established through countless stories of adventure, a legacy forged through emergent game play and community driven activities. We love to laugh and have !!FUN!! (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/images/4/40/FunComic.png) and embrace the journey rather than the destination. Our goal is to foster a tight-knit, "mature" community where every member's contributions are relevant and meaningful, someplace where you might (dare I say) make a friend. We want to put the U and I back in community.

With clichés like that, how could we go wrong?

We have been exploring the potential of what can be done with vanilla command blocks and it has been fun on a bun however, we plan on adding mods as soon as the desirable ones become available. Expect the kind of mods that make Minecraft a more rogue-like experience, Mmmm, beardly. I would love to have you join, simply send me your Minecraft handle in a PM or in a reply to this thread and I'll put you on the whitelist and send you the server info. Be sure to visit http://redd.it/2cgjs3 to familiarize yourself with the expectation we like to set and to enjoy more of this inane yammering.

We'll laugh, we'll cry--it'll be better than Cats! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4p-ML7jmzk)

Yes, but there is the slight added problem of the sheep being eaten before they can be harvested for wool.

I've yet to make a bed.... :/

PMing. I don't have much time to play Minecraft anymore but it'd be fun to kick around on a server every now and then.

What mods do you plan on getting? I've just discovered FTB monster so going back to vanilla seems a sad and empty prospect.

Depends on what 1.8 brings to show. I was a huge fan of Mindcrack, especially IC2 with GregTech. A few other mods I enjoy are Galacticraft, Forestry (and those damned bees) Applied Energistics, TerraFirmaCraft, Thaumcraft, CivCraft and Enviromine. Like I said, my favorite mods are the ones that make Minecraft a more emergent, rogue-like experience and add advanced industrial technology.

Check out the subreddit (http://redd.it/2cgjs3) I put together for the server, it provides a broad overview of what my overarching goal for the server is. I will be adding a more detailed feature list once I have a moment to wring it out of my brain and into text so, expect to see that soon™ ;D

Wellp, we're not going anywhere. When you're ready to join, we'd love to have ya! We're a real casual group, some of us just playing for an hour at a time.  All of us spend a good chunk of our time in-game simply bantering. We've been steadily growing without it snowballing into a cacophonous noise-hole. New people join every day but, everyone takes the time to get to know everyone else. It's a good pace, I like it.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask :)

Also, we have a dwarf fort! Kind of. In the works.

Okay, it's really just a very cool looking underground base for the time being. But it will be a Dwarf Fort worthy of Armok when we're done!

Somebody on the server mentioned wanting a race mod so they could be a dwarf. Think I found something that could fit that criteria. Just gotta wait for it to be updated. (http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/1291730-more-player-models-2-adds-a-character-creation)

Well, I know the owner is out on the west coast of North America, so... GMT-7.

On an unrelated note, I might wind up expanding my shop to be an entire mall. Clothing shops, food courts, hardware stores...

Edit: Is it just me or is the server derping?

It seems the server has become a victim of it's own surprise success! We just upgraded to beefier hardware so, if you had trouble getting a free slot before, you shouldn't now. At this rate, it won't be long before another upgrade is needed  :P

Well, I know the owner is out on the west coast of North America, so... GMT-7.

The server is situated in the UK so +1 UTC (if you haven't figured though out already)

Is this server up 24/7? I am still on the lookout for somewhere I can play with my mom (we're 6 time zones apart), although I have to teach her how to play with monsters on. Is mob griefing turned off? I don't think I want to play somewhere that a creeper can destroy my hard work.

Yes its on 24/7. Yes, Creepers can blow your stuff up if you are not careful. Then again, it really is not a big deal unless you let said creeper inside of a confined space you made when it comes to rebuilding.

Anyway, I have begun* construction on the southern rail line. However the NPC village immediately south of spawn has some buildings that will be in the way. I motion for demolition of buildings in the line's path.

That's really cool, I wish more (any) of my family would play Minecraft. This game really does not have a demographic.

Our community would welcome you and your mum with open arms, we absolutely love to help new players but, I gotta warn you, our world is kinda beastly. Like 'droid said, we do have mob griefing and the server is running the game on hard difficulty. Even veteran Minecraft players struggle to simply stay alive sometimes on our server. Death comes swiftly and in abundance in our world. We love the more roguelike survival experience but, I understand that it's not for everyone and I want to be sure that everyone who joins the server enjoys the time they share with us.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'd love to answer them for you :)

Still cannot connect to ANY 1.8 server :(

Does anyone have screens?

I have a few here (http://imgur.com/a/ACPaO#0)

I really have been meaning to take more but, I've just been too busy playing and having fun. We have so many builds going on right now, I'm not even sure where I would start :P

EDIT: I added new screens to the album, I still need to add tons more but, That's all i can do today.

Won't be on for a day or two. Jumped down to 1.6.4 to mess with mods.

Edit: Apparently the modpack I'm installing uses a launcher that creates a new instance so I don't have to downgrade. huh.

It may be a crappy reproduction of Magus, but at least it isn't in my original style, which was, quite simply, a horrible, mouth-between-the-eyes-which-are-on-opposite-sides-of-the-face, no-texture reproduction of whatever I was into at the moment, be it Pirates of the Caribbean, Zelda, or LotR.

The text file that needs to be edited is only generated by the server software, not the client. So, that would only be an issue if you are running your own server.

What error message are you getting when you try to connect?

Either "Can't connect to server" or "Cannot resolve hostname." For every server on my list, too. This only happens when I launch 1.8. Other versions are fine (though can't play 1.8 servers, of course.) I've tried reinstalling, too.

Dang, those error messages do little to resolve the obfuscation of your issue. The only two dumb things I can think of are 1. Make sure your Java is up to date (https://java.com/download). I use both the 32 and 64 bit versions and my Minecraft runs on the 64 bit flavor 2. Check your Minecraft launcher profile; make sure your game directories aren't overlapping, double-check your selected version and make sure you are using the correct version of Java without any wonky virtual machine arguments.

Wellp, you have exhausted my capacity for assistance, goodsir. My last and obvious suggestion would be to ask for aid on the official forums (http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/unmodified-minecraft-client) or Mojang's support page (https://help.mojang.com/). I'm sure they can provide more aid then I.

Ender Dragon Raiding Party
Today @ 3:00 pm EDT

The Ender Dragon. He is the foe every Minecraftian must eventually face. His fire, the last thing seen by many, and his wings their last shade.

But fear not! At 3:00 pm EDT, this shadow shall be faced! See the glimmer of the shields, hear the Dragon's Roar! Watch it felled, see its ruin smoking on the Towers of the End. We will ride out to face this threat head on, and you may pit yourself against the Beast, or watch the action going down in safety. No rest for the wicked. No rest to the Dragon.

Equip yourself in diamond or iron armour, bring out your most trusted blades and bows and meet us on the server to partake in this Epic and Daring Raid into the depths of the unknown!

The dragon put up a worthy resistance  but, it knew it was out-classed so, it was fighting dirty. First thing it does is send Th4dwaRfY1 plummeting into the void before he can even finish loading the area. Then just as Blovvfish manages to erect a meager cobble shelter, the dragon swoops down, leveling the hovel, sending Blovvfish to join dorfy and wrecking half the bridge to the main island. That might have been the highlight of the adventure next to KoSS running around terrified as unwilling dragon-bait. i though I was going to lose it when the dragon wrecked that cobblebox

We should have a video of the encounter soon™ but, in the meantime you can enjoy Th4dwArfY1's Heroic Epic (http://www.reddit.com/r/PioneeringFrontiers/comments/2ipgnl/the_end_is_nigh/)

So I'm either gonna save up and build a desktop for gaming and keep my laptop for my worldbuilding stuff, or see if the next driver update the manufacturer pushes out will fix it.

Have you tried rolling back to Java 7? It's still supported until April of next year and you can find it here:

I find that it is good practice to reformat your hard drive and start clean every year or so, perhaps this is your incentive?

I've just joined, logged in, had a look around. That starting house is beautiful and very useful, but I ended up logging off because it's not so much fun to play alone (otherwise I'd just play single player). Time zones, yay!

I have a question: I saw references to a map on the subreddit while I was looking through it, but I can't find any link to it. Is there a map? If so, can someone send me a link? One of the reasons I often give up on multiplayer servers is that I spend so much time wandering around looking for a good place to start, I get bored or frustrated and lose interest. A map would be very helpful.

Also, where are you guys spending time in the game? Is there something I should help with, or should I just try to set myself up a little hermitage and see how long I can stay alive? I should probably note that I'm not a terribly skilled builder, and I'm interested more in playing the game than in building with creative mode. So if you're all focusing on creative-building your spawn towns and whatnot, I may pass on this server until you've finished all that.

Yeah our 'business' hours are between 5:00 PM and 2:00 AM GMT although, the wealth of new releases this month have been bleeding our population dry *shakes a fist in futile rage at Beyond Earth*. We usually have someone on who can direct you to the map, at least that's true for those people not playing at ungodly hours of the night  ;) I did post a link to it in the latest update (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=143158.msg5791398#msg5791398), however.

A lot of our players are very established at this point, they have farms upon farms upon farms (All Farms) farms for daysssssss. They have lordly piles of food, tools, materials, armor and weapons and survival has become a non-issue for them, they are thriving. They spend their time improving their personal towns and outposts, concocting ever more elaborately absurd contraptions and exploring new frontiers to simply throw it all away and start anew in a fresh location. However, We have new people joining all the time and it's possible to collaborate with them in some mutual survival hijinks.

Our spawn project is actually built largely in survival mode (as that's our players preferred mode) and only two structures were constructed in creative (Tavern and Inn) and they were the result of special group events intended to foster community togetherness. The majority of buildings in the project are contributed by individual players when they are in-between their own projects and out of their own personal materials. I don't expect the spawn project to ever be truly "finished" as I expect it to grow and evolve organically as new players join and contribute their stories to the project's enduring legacy. It will eventually reach some state of feature completeness but, I don't see it as a museum piece, something that is finalized, framed and hung on a wall to be viewed but not touched. I see it as something to be worn, lived-in and used--perpetually sculpted by it's purpose and function and the needs of it's patrons. In a sense I see it as a manuscript of the history of our world, an almanac written in constructions.

If you want to set off and stake a claim of you can call your own, we have endless frontiers to explore and tame. if you're into grunt labor, infrastructure is something we can never get enough of, laying down some cobble road or improving the rail system doesn't require an artist's talented hand. In addition to our spawn project, all of our players would welcome your contributions to the countless (really, I can't even keep track anymore) personal projects they have going on. We got a very friendly group who love playing with other people and company in any endeavor is always welcome. Really, the easiest way to find something to do in our world is to simply ask, "Hey, what are you guys working on?"

I'm still doing manual map updates, I'll push out a new one after this weekend on either Monday or Tuesday.  ;D

Yeah, it was a lot of fun and I'd be inclined to host it for an extended period of time however, I hate how it divides the  community between two separate servers. Eventually I'd like to host multiple worlds on a single server and connect them together with mods like Multiverse or something similar.

Y'know, that was almost enough to tempt me to reinstall Minecraft. But eh, effort and Civ V addiction.

if was fun while it lasted and while these survival worlds are 'fun' to visit, i wouldn't want to live there.

i think with everyone involved and over several days, our total iron harvesting totaled to 5 bars.

Y'know, that was almost enough to tempt me to reinstall Minecraft. But eh, effort and Civ V addiction.

Civ addiction is a helluva thing. It's probably not worth the effort to install Minecraft, I mean it takes TWO whole clicks to get it going--even more if you haven't already downloaded the installer! It's such a hassle, really, I wouldn't bother.  :P

When I was cooking up maps, I made a similar world with regular oceans instead, it was very beautiful and quite livable but, I decided against using it because, I knew I would get too attached.

Yeah, once we made the bucket, we pretty much won the map. I used it to cast and mould a nether portal and after I felt like I had accomplished what I set out to do. That darkroom spawner was a a right pain though, I swear it would get creepered every 30 minutes and rushing to patch it up while mobs continuously rain down on me is not an experience I will soon forget.

I've also gotta fuck around in the console because Linux. and the fact that Oracle's JVM isn't available through the Ubuntu software centre. :v

Yeah, I had a time of it when I set up an Ubuntu Minecraft server via SSH. It was my first excursion into Linux to boot, talk about learning curve. These instructions are probably pretty pedantic but, here's what I did to get Oracle's Java 8 going on that machine.

...That's odd, the only bit the instructions I found showed were the last set. Are the first two steps more for getting it set up for a server, or...?

This is simply a list of what I did to get Java running on a fresh Ubuntu install.

Step 1 is weeding out some DNS gremlins which you probably won't need to worry about since your not running your install headless via SSH

Step 2 updates your Ubuntu install and installs the software necessary to complete Step 3.

Step 3 adds the prescribed download repository, updates the prerequisite software we just installed in the previous step and installs Oracle's JVM 8. The final command is to verify that Java was properly installed, it should return something to the effect of:
(presuming the Linux deities bless you with their favor)

java version "1.8.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b17)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode)

Was about to jump on for no reason in particular, but I can't access the server, using either the IP address in the subreddit or the one I was sent via PM a bit ago (at least a month).  Anyone else having a problem connecting?

Yeah, we change IPs rather frequently and I can't be assed to message everyone whose played on the server, ever--each time we do so, I simply provide it upon request.

I've sent you the latest IP but, all of our group is busy enjoying their Christmas bounty of new games and catching up on their backlogs before we embark on our new Minecraft endeavor. Our classic, legacy world will remain up and available for the foreseeable future but, until either Mojang or the modding community step-up and breathe fresh air into 1.8 with new content, I don't anticipate to see much activity in that world. However, by then I would expect most people to have long moved on, at that point we would be in a position to reevaluate what we want from 1.8 and revisit it with the lessons we have learned over the past year and a more focused intent.
