Title: Notable Games Archive: [ARCHIVED]
Post by: Jack A T on September 23, 2014, 06:28:04 pm
This is the Notable Games Archive, where we keep all of Bay12's best rounds of Mafia.  The rounds that, due to some high-quality aspect, deserve to be remembered.  Since the forum is pretty old, there's a lot of great games here.  If you're a newbie, you should probably start with the Vanilla games, though everything else is awesome, too.

If you've just finished playing, reading, or running a particularly excellent game, come to this thread and nominate it!  This is the place to squawk about it for future generations of mafia players.

Jack has taken over? Ok.

Question: can someone nominate a game before it is finished? :P

I would say no. It could be unfair to players still playing.

No.  It's rather hard to judge the overall quality of a game before actions/chats/alignments are revealed.

Completely agreed.

I nominate the recent CYOM as notable, considering there were 8 days of quickhammers.

...really?

I do enjoy the rare games where I win, and bullshit is fun to a point, but that one...

Idk.  I'm not going to give it a second nomination, someone else can if they want.

It was notable, not exactly fun for everyone involved, but notable.

I'll second that nomination because that hyperinflation was so bad it beat the Weimar Republic and Zimbabwe.

"A game so thoroughly mechanically broken by it's players that it merits mention; where between one scum team resurrecting eachother incessantly and the other one abusing hyperinflation to steal every single vote in the game and quickhammer 8 times consecutively. Town players were thoroughly confused by random powers showing up in their possessions and vanishing, and many streaks (good and bad) were broken."

I second the nomination.

In case it wasn't clear from my previous post, I support the nomination as well.

"A game so thoroughly mechanically broken by it's players that it merits mention; where between one scum team resurrecting eachother incessantly and the other one abusing hyperinflation to steal every single vote in the game and quickhammer 8 times consecutively. Self-targeting changelings. Town players were thoroughly confused by random powers showing up in their possessions and vanishing, and many streaks (good and bad) were broken."

I second the nomination.
I made a small change to the above text, because the self-changeling is worthy of note.

I'd consider nominating KYOSN once TolyK finally shows up and explains what the hell was going on.

However, I am starting to think that is unlikely, since he's been inactive for almost a month now ...

Its just taking him that long to figure out who won.

I remember there was a thread that I read that explained exactly what a bastard mod is. I can't seem to find it anymore, and that frustrates me. Does anyone know where I can find that wonderful description?

((Insert something witty here.))

I nominate KYOSN (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=145144.0), to be placed in the "Bastard Mods" section.

Description:
It actually was a bastard mod, but a bastard mod would advertise it as a semi-bastard just to be a bastard.
You will need to read this game several times in order to understand a third of it. It's probably worth noting that TolyK(the mod) took over three quarters of 2015 to figure out who won(for sure, that is). All I'm going to tell you is that the game was themed around Shakerag.

I've noticed that the Hall of Legends doesn't have any mafia games in it.
I think we should choose a mafia game(past) to nominate, yeh?

Any suggestions?

That's mainly because we have our own notable games archive.

I nominate Vengeful Mafia 11 for Classic setups because of how freaking long it took. An average of 25 real life days for every in-game day. I think that's a record.
Title: Re: Notable Games Archive: The New Thread

Ouch. Yes, that's probably a record.
Title: Re: Notable Games Archive: The New Thread

Is there anything of note about it aside from taking too long?  Anything making it something we want on exhibit?  Serious question, by the way.  I wasn't really paying attention by the end.

Well, Town did win in the end even though it looked like scum had it in the bag for 49 out of 50 days.

Nominating Mafia Marathon.  Finally.
Title: Re: Notable Games Archive: The New Thread
Post by: FallacyofUrist on December 30, 2016, 01:54:39 pm
I hereby nominate Mafia Marathon as a Bastard Mod.

21(or so) rounds, lasting a total of a year(or so). Each round is a semi-bastard(or so) setup of its own, played by each player who signed up for the game originally. 4(or so) players. Each round was more bastard than the last. Add to that a meta game of sorts based around forfeiting the points won...
The length alone should count for a nomination. Add to that the 21(or so) individual bastard setups...
~~~
NINJAD.
Nominating BYOR0.
Two players fused to form a mega serial killer, the mafia kept reviving over and over, and in the end the two remaining players simultaneously hammered each other resulting in a win for the SK.
Self-Defenestrate! Seconded!
Title: Re: Notable Games Archive: The New Thread
Post by: webadict on July 12, 2017, 10:51:57 am
That wasn't the half of it. The SK got their mega role stolen by a member of a cult, the four man mason group was literally gunning down everyone else and all the town members died to what amounts to the most random of RNG, and the mafia got a double kill endgame ability, and WIFOMed every other player into thinking one of the remaining town players was a secret SK with an abduction kill. And the killless SK won while dead.
Title: Re: Notable Games Archive: The New Thread
Post by: TolyK on July 12, 2017, 01:12:01 pm
I'd also like to slightly correct that the "four man mason group" was formed out of initially-town roles, but eventually included a cultist and the SK, with the townies literally only dying at the end.
Wild West Mafia (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=93649.0) isn't in the list?
Has it always not been in the list?
The game by itself comprises ~90% of what you need to know about playing scum, even giving an excellent example of how to read for cop night 1. I would put reading through the thread as a more important point than playing through a beginner's mafia. I can try to write a description for it if you want, there's little degree to which I can not recommend this game enough.
edit:
The scumchat basically outlines 95% of what I've taken to calling quantum mafia as well, very little if any of the content to be read from the thread is really dated.
Add BYOR 13 because it had 5 SKs and 2 Town-aligned SKs, and everyone both loves and secretly hates it. The fact that it ended with the Town-aligned Doomsayer killing 3 SKs and everyone else, and the SK-ally won without any SK winning should make it a fun romp.
An SK did win, though, Cheeetar won by default because he was last one standing except a single town who couldn’t kill him.
Nah, they narrated some of the owlbear's stuff I think. It came down to a perpetual draw where Tiruin's "kill literally everything" ability couldn't kill Cheeetar and Cheeetar didn't actually have a kill to get rid of Tiruin, so you declared it in favor of Cheeetar.
I can also update it if we need. Although I'm not opposed to someone else making a new thread and just copying over the relevant stuff. I can then unsticky this one and sticky the new one.
Maybe it makes sense for you (Meph) to make a new one, copy over Jack's current post, and re-pin it. You're most likely to not disappear randomly, I think. :P
On the other hand, if someone else makes it, that leaves Meph as a failsafe.  If Meph makes it and disappears, then we have nobody.
