Title: Tergel, "The beard of all beards" [12x12][16x16]

A simple Dwarf Fortress.

Download ▼ (http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10087)
v5.0

The current release is for Dwarf Fortress version 0.42.02. However Tergel will most likely work fine for any past or future versions of Dwarf Fortress.

Text Will Be Text is now supported!

Tergel is an ASCII tileset combined with simple pixel art. I wanted to enhance the ASCII feel, while keeping the game readable, and giving the game a happier feel. This tileset was derived from Simple Mood by Rogue Yun. Also inspired by Taffer, Jolly Bastion, Quale's "scroll-o-sprites", and many others.

It's always lovely to see a new, nicely presented tileset here on the graphics subforum. The font doesn't quite align with my tastes, but that's an easy customization with the TWBT plugin. I'm a big fan of smiley dwarf tiles, though, and yours are just great.

Overall: charming, clean, and surprisingly unique! Nice work :) I'll definitely give this a go.

Thank you. I'm glad you like the faces, I've seen a few people not really liking them, I'll make an alternative for the faces eventually though.

Also;
I've uploaded a small update. I made the font names capitalized properly, so anyone using a case-sensitive platform shouldn't have a problem.

Hey guys, in other forums I've seen a few people saying they're not fans of the dwarf faces in the tileset, so I've made some alternatives.

Here are examples:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Do you guys like these? Is there anything I should change? These will be alternates, so the original faces will stay as default.

The soldiers are perfect, maybe for the civilians a bit shading on the beards'd be good to make them more dwarfy, and not like 'little grey man'. But overall very good, a bit derp, but cute. :)

I like your set, and I prefer these alternatives to the faces. I do agree that the beards should be shaded. It looks more like a pointed chin than a beard at the moment, I think.

Any chance of whipping up some comparable tiles for the "main races" of DF, or are you keeping this strictly a tileset? (Humans, elves, goblins, kobolds)

I recommend to give the beards a transparency (if you are planning on applying shading). Now and again farmers will go negative (when sleeping on brown beds or standing over another creature). Without a beard transparency they might look a little out of place. But (of course) I also understand the 1bit theme. This is a nifty trick to pull off just using white. But, like the others. I like it. I've always been more fond of humanoid dwarves than their floating head counterparts.

Thank you, guys! I was worried the beards would look too much like pointed chins, I was kind of hesitant to do shading because I've been keeping the tileset just pure white, with no partial transparency or shading. But I will add some shading and see how it looks.

I would like to! I always think about adding some graphics when I see your tileset. I'll definitely try to.

Yeah that is a problem I've noticed with some tilesets and graphics. But even with shaded beards I'll be keeping the eyes and mouth hollow, so a sleeping farmer will still have a visible face.

I've updated the tileset! The new dwarf tiles are in, and I've decided to make them the default. The old faces are now alternatives. I also did a few tiny tweaks with other tiles.

And now, a preview of what I'm working on next:

I have a new favorite tileset. :) Added to Macnewbie as default look for this version, looking forward to new graphic sprites.
If I may, the elves look a bit fat, the rest I cool.

I do agree the elves are too fat, I've made them a bit skinner now, I also made the kobolds skinnier, since they're tiny.

Those look good, thank you! I'll try them out, and add them next release. When I was converting the tiles to 16x16 I did have some trouble with the water tiles, they always looked a bit off, I just never got around to improving them.

Hi CowThing!

I really like the walls in Tergel. But there is one thing that puts me off. When they are engraved, all the magenta/transparent bits become bright grey and the walls look ugly like that. I've been trying various Tile Magic methods to get the walls to look the same when engraved except for some very light dithering within the actual wall texture but I haven't been successful at all.

Is there any way to achieve this?

You might want to look how it's done in grim fortress (that recent version with ironhand-style walls, so you may take old ironhand too). About a month ago i examined it in photoshop and was a bit surprised about it. Wall tiles, you have described, are based there on a good combination of grey background and transparency

Grim Fortress's engravings are what I'm trying to replicate, but that only works because the wall tiles in GF occupy all the pixels in the 12x12 space.
In Tergel, wall tiles don't occupy all the pixels in the 12x12 space, so the transparent bits end up showing the engraving color, which is what I'm trying to avoid, and am unable to do.

You can put the space you don't want to change, when engraving, black.

I did notice this as well with engraved walls. I'll look into it, but I don't know if I can really modify it to look good, I don't what to add black around the walls because that would look strange with the colors I use.

Hello everyone! Sorry I haven't been around for a while, I finally got back to updating the pack, here are the changes in the current release:

• Added graphics for Dwarves, Humans, Elves, Goblins, and Kobolds. I haven't been able to test these fully, but I have based them on other graphical sets, so they should work fine. If you notice anything wrong please let me know.
• Added an alternative optional darker color scheme.
• Modified some tiles, most notably the walls, they now have grey solid sides rather than the white striped sides.
• Modified the solid white tile (used for designations and solid colors) to have a light grey stippled border (same as the change Taffer made in his tileset).
• Fixed a few problems with text in the 16x size
• Replaced the water/sand tiles with the ones Rogue Yun made earlier. I also made 12x versions of it.

I also stopped including alternative tiles for now, because it was taking a lot of time trying to get them all together, and I wasn't happy with how they looked.
I haven't been able to update the screenshots in the main post either, I'll work on that now that the update is released.

I've been working on an update. I've started messing with using Text Will Be Text.

A few objects will have custom tiles. For example, tables and chairs.
(http://i.imgur.com/PyDSWj2.png)

You can also see the up/down stairs in that picture, they will have a custom tile too, as well as bins.
(http://i.imgur.com/5eEYtED.png)

Tracks will have custom tiles too
(http://i.imgur.com/ZovwH7j.png)

And I'll include the multilevel settings I use. I think multilevel looks best when it's got the sky color overlaying, makes it look foggy. Just making lower levels darker is too subtle.
(http://i.imgur.com/dch9NOH.png)

There are still a few other tiles I haven't shown yet, like doors and pump screw.

Sorry it took so long to update. I got distracted (you can blame Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate).

But the update is out now!

• Added TWBT support!
  Includes:
- Custom tiles for bins, stairs, pump screws, chairs, tables, doors(a custom door for each material, wood, stone, and metal), and minecart rails.
- A "plain text" art file, which changes a few tiles that normally look weird in menus because of the pixel art (most notably '<' and '>' tiles).
- A file with the Multilevel view settings I use.

• Modified walls and dwarves to look less weird with a non-black background. (Still looks a little weird)
• Small tweaks to a few tiles.

Nice, thank you, changes like these make this my favorite ASCII tileset!
I suggest to edit tile 248 in the Text tileset, it's used by the Extended item viewscreen (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=147707.0) dfhack script to display material temperature.
And the bundled init.txt is not configured properly for twbt mode, you need to modify:
Code: [Select]
[FONT:16x16_Tergel_Text.png]
[FULLFONT:16x16_Tergel_Text.png]
[GRAPHICS:YES]
[PRINT_MODE:TWBT]

And I kept the init.txt vanilla for people that wanted to continue using it without TWBT. I did include instructions in the readme.txt about how to enable TWBT. But I think I'll just include separate vanilla and TWBT folders, so people can quickly and easily choose which one they want.

Edit:
Alright, I have uploaded a new version, 4.1, with a new text tile for 248, and separate folders for Vanilla and TWBT versions.

That's very impressive! Your set retained a lot of that simple charm after the upscale, and I can't really see anything I would change. The way you handle 1-bit forms (especially with that treasure chest) reminds me of old ZX Spectrum games. :D

Hi there,

I can't get the TWBT version running. I tried it with the latest LNP. This is the folder layout I'm using:

-Dwarf Fortress 40_24 Starter Pack r14
 -> LNP
   -> Graphics
     -> Tergel
       -> data
       -> raw

I then installed the graphics pack with PyLNP and edited the \Dwarf Fortress 40_24 Starter Pack r14\Dwarf Fortress 0.40.24\dfhack.init file with the settings mentioned in the README.
Am I missing something?

Greetings
stibbons

Posting to watch (Please stay alive, little tileset!).

Love the set so far; Using it as an ASCII tileset without [GRAPHICS] or TWBT doesn't seem to cause any problems.

I actually need a bit of assistance with this tileset.  I'm eager to use it, but installation following the provided instructions produces a problem;

While Dwarf Fortress runs, it does not do so in a playable state.  After installing version 43.03-r1, the latest iteration of DFHack, and the latest iteration of There Will Be Text!, I do as instructed and simply paste over the 16x16 TWBT version of the tileset and apply the Multilevel view options to DFHack's init file.

The following is all that renders for me,  I don't have the slightest idea what is wrong.

(http://puu.sh/srfXA/1efee618fd.jpg)

What is the solution?  What is even happening?

I don't know what would cause that.

I would get PE's Starter Pack (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126076.0) and install the GitHub version of Tergel (https://github.com/DFgraphics/Tergel/releases) into the /LNP/graphics/ folder. The GitHub version uses Tergel 16x and is formatted for use with Lazy Newb Packs.

Hi, first of all, thanks! your tileset and colors are my favorite :D
But I'm having an issue I'd like to ask if it's intended or if something's wrong with my config. The later is the most probable, because I use your base 16x_tileset with TWBT, without multilevel, changing only to the curses_640x300 as text font, and I use also the gemset creature graphics (I like your's, but Gemset's stand out a bit more for my liking).
The issue I have is with the inorganic_stone graphs, I see Magnetite walls with the ~ (witch I consider is sand), and the sand walls with the ////.
(http://i.imgur.com/XYT12ZG.png)
I expected metal to have the £ pound symbol, and being iron, to be red.... but maybe vanilla DF graphics displays it like this also.

I didn't change any raws, except for the language files witch come from Amostubal's Expanded Dictionary), and the graphics folder that comes from Gemset for the creatures.

Init and d_init are the same as the one provided by you on your 16x twbt folder. I'm using PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack 0.43.05-r02.
And the object raws as you don't include them (and I find that great!) must come from a vanilla fresh install.

Thanks again,
Gabix.

This is what I have been looking for, simplistic tileset and graphics, any chance you would be looking to continue to update this pack with maybe some animal graphics or just more graphics in general?
