I just wanted to know how many people in the general discussion played DF.
This is a poll, but you can put answers in the comments as well.
-
You go from 'a long time' to recently without an interim. I've been playing for a few years, maybe 4-6 month before I joined.
-
For me, DF gets kicked on a few times a year, usually played regularly for a week or two then idles back down until it happens again. This is a pattern that has repeated since the game had no Z axis -- I've been playing longer than I've been on the forum :P
-
fixed a bug where a certain option wasn't visible
-
When I first joined, I played the crap out of it. Then I started modding. Then I got more and more involved in checking the boards. Now I only play it occasionally, but that's true for videogames as a whole.

Put your answer in the poll please!

... I did. Your fix shifted the answer up one, heh.
-
I started in late 2010, early 2011, but didn't register on the forums for a while. I haven't booted up in a few months, but I'm looking forward to doing so soon.
-
I played DF and lurked for almost a year before I signed up for the forums. While I still play it with some frequency, I don't do so nearly as often as I used to.
-
Off and on. Mostly waiting this time for the updates to stop rolling out till next big version and for the cool mods to pop back up. I used to play it all day at college during boring classes though.
-
I have basically the same situation as Frumple, except I signed up a couple months after starting, started during late .34 era, and it's less "a few times a year" and more "once a month".
-
I've been playing for awhile (I put long time because it's been a long time compared to other games)
It is an amazing game

how many people in the general discussion played DF.
I started playing back in 2D, the age of "deeper" beihg "to the right." The days of one river, one chasm, and then stopping once you see adamantine, because if you dig into it your game just ends. So instead you played until somebody caught on fire and contagiously burned down every dwarf in the fort. Back when elephants were deadly, back when digging out too big an area meant a cave-in, back when it was difficult to survive your first winter and games ended because you died, rather than because the game simply gets so laggy that you get bored.
Good times.
After the switch to 3D I played a lot for several months, then adapted to the new changes and realized that the game had become fantastically easier than it used to be. So I played with mods for a while. Dig deeper was my favorite for quite a long time. Trying to figure out how to survive more than a couple seasons restored life to the game. But then, eventually I moved on.
Ever since DF 2010, I've found that the game evolves very slowly. Every year or two I load it up and check for changes. Play a few days, get bored.
-
I began playing not too long after the .34 release, I believe. Still messing around with it, though not that often.

Who said "What does DF stand for?"
I am intrigued. When you sign up for the forum, you have to complete the sentence "Dw___ Fortress
-
I, too, play for a while every so often and then stop playing for a while. Sometimes I just feel like being dwarfy, other times I just don't.
-
I have not played in over a year. It just fell out of my interest. I keep swearing that I'll pick it back up one of these days but it hasn't happened yet.

Most likely some joker? Not everybody takes polls like this completely seriously.

What does DF stand for?
But really, I've just gotten back to playing it again.

I used to play Dwarf Fortress pretty commonly, but I think around the time carts and the hauling update was introduced I lost touch with it. I'm sure a ton of stuff has changed since then, and I'll get back into it eventually when I have the motivation.
-
I tend to fire the game up each week or so. I'll play a lot more frequently just after releases - so I can see all the new features - but other than that I really can't get into the game like I used to. Which is sad, because it's really, really fun.
-
Am I the only one who can barely tell the difference between some updates with major but fixes?
Do I just not play enough to encounter things that get changed later?
-
I started playing back in the 2D days, then joined the forums and lurked for about two years, and then started posting in the upper boards and playing around with modding.
Then my previous forum haunt (HotU) died so I decided to check out the General Discussion area. I've been lodged here like a tumor ever since.
-
I first started playing Dwarf Fortress I think just after it moved to 3D as a magazine I bought at the time did an article on it and included a copy on the DVD.
I have played it pretty regularly since then, though leading up to the last big release I hadn't played it for a while, maybe about 6 months or a few more. Hurdles for playing again were the more complex military system (which I do understand now) and the minecart system for hauling stone (which I still don't use often but the extra time my dwarves take hauling stone doesn't bother me as much as all the carving of tracks and setting up of stockpiles and carts).
The recent release has led me to rethink my usual defence of walls and moats since goblins and trolls, as I found out in a rather tense siege, can now climb up and over walls. Adding roofs will solve that minor problem though.
-
Are there really people on this forum that have never played DF? O_o
I've been playing since the 2D version, whenever the urge hits. Usually when a new version or mod comes out or I get an idea for this !super awesome! fort that dies horribly within a few years.
-
I pick it up off and on, like most people apparently do.
I'm currently waiting for the army update because that might actually make me have some !FUN! instead of just sitting behind my drawbridge airlock all the time, engraving the entire fortress until I'm bored and just stop playing.
I also want more then 200 dwarves because I can fit all those bearded bastard's homes, work, food and booze on one level, and I want an actual reason to build multi-story forts beyond "it looks pretty"
-
I learned about it back in 2D, but I never actually played for myself until 3D's release. I've been playing it off and on ever since; right now I'm on an uptick in activity, for instance, which will probably last a month or so given past trends. Mostly, I've been goofing around with the new marriage and personality mechanics.
-
I played for a pretty long time - got pretty darn good at it if I do say so. I stopped playing right around the release of 2014. The new trees and emotion system screwed me up a bit, and I had quite a few other games to get into. I mostly just play FTL now, but I keep looking at Dwarf Fortress thinking "when I get some seriously good chunks of time again I'm coming back". With all the new mechanics going on, I feel like i need to re-approach the game like it's brand new to learn everything.

If you have the hardware, I'm pretty sure you can set the population cap above 200. Most people only ever push it down, but I don't see why it couldn't go up.
-
I tend not to play Dwarf Fortress for long periods of time usually so the changes hit me more profoundly.
Though the military update has sort of made the Fortress mode pretty much unplayable for me.
-This however I could learn and eventually surpass.
And the STUPID DANG ANNOYING UNFUN TERRIBLE BOOGYMEN have made Adventure mode unplayable for me... Ohh and the Rivers...
-YAY! I am forced to keep team members with me who pretty much beat encounters for me making the game boring... Ohh and lots of impassible rivers that might make me lose members? What fun!
And the insanely long world creation times have made the entire game unplayable for me.
-I am waiting for the update that kind of fixes this.
So as the game currently is.. it is unplayable for me.
-
If world creation takes over 30 minutes you're doing it wrong or your computer is really low-end, make smaller worlds and shorter histories.
The bogeyman.
It's terrifying.
It was inevitable.
I think world creation will only get more and more complex and getting longer to finish.
I throw my popcap to 500 in earlier versions, but now I go with 300 strict.
I always play but sometimes I get a break from the forums, you could say I withdraw from society, but my SDT are kind of "meh".
My longest hiatus was during a month when I got my first job, I couldn't bring myself to do anything.
-
On and off. I lost my last fortress because I wanted to see how tough clowns were for the first time. It turns out they are pretty tough. :-X
-
I think what had me return to DF has to be the update of assigning designation priorities. It made organizing my projects a crapton easier to handle, as well as prioritize deconstructions of scaffolding and such so I don't have to worry about losing workers by AS. I never expected to be able to finish my grand dining hall within a reasonable span of time. Doing similar for woodcutting also helps a bit too; just in case it's too dangerous at the moment to chop down an area; or to redirect attention elsewhere without needing to burrow.

9. There is nine of us playing DF.
Edit: Just realized I might've accidentally necroed this thread. Sorry if that's the case.

'S been a long time. But I have fond memories. DF is a game like Skyrim for me - if I let myself get sucked in, I'll be stuck for a long stretch. Sadly, I cannot indulge.

... where'd you get the 9 from? A full 80 of the 87 respondents play.

A random number generator.

Hehehe.
I play Df as well, if I haven't said so already.

Haven't played in a while. Last time I tried I got stuck at learning how to use the military menu. I'll probably need to read a guide again if I want to have any chance at surviving.
