I am hoping the extra large armor ends up being as annoying as I imagine it would be in adventurer mode, but I gotta go with the troll because of the name/nobody else did one. If I could art I'd draw a trollface with tusks.

Unraveller, put this in your hack/scripts directory as changename.lua, and add "keybinding add Ctrl-N@dwarfmode/LookAround changename" to your dfhack.ini file. This makes the logs much nicer. In the arena mode you can use Ctrl-N in "k-mode" or "v-mode" (basically when you have a selected) to rename them.Interesting approach, I may borrow some of that for the names script I'm working on actually, I've got it where it will pull up the adventurer creation name selection screen and atm I've just got a simple toggle so I can set the name of an artifact or a unit, totally forgot you could do the name prompt like that though... yes, my brain bubbles.
It still sometimes say "The NAME stands up", but I'm not sure if that can be fixed. It's probably the job title that usually goes there.Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Would another go be out of line? If not, I'd take another stab at this.

Ha ha! Alrighty everyone, I don't believe I see anything wrong. This'll be the beginning of a new great and bloody arena! But where are all the awesome titles! Ah well.
For those of you just joining us, in effort to save some time on my part and be consistent. I'd like for this very simple format to be adhered to.

And that's exactly what they thought last tourney, but then a Kobold won.
Well, for the AI maybe, I'd just grab your crossbow and beat you about the mandibles and thorax with it. T.T
I hope he's the best he can be already, cause he ain't getting no training or upgrades.
@Azhf, you're doing just fine buddy. There is most certainly room, I'll keep applications open until they start to trickle through. Thanks for joining, nice name by the way!
Hope it's not a big deal but I decided to give Lucan stone a title. Already changed the entry but he is now Lucan Stone the unbreakable
Honestly, after looking at how the humans fared in the last tournament, I don't really expect mine to make it past the qualifiers! Which is why he has no left over points for bonus.
I finished making my character, but I noticed people after me made the list and I have yet to join them. Don't leave me behind, Unraveller D:

Are there still slots left? I'd really like to give this a try.
can i change my steel 2h sword for an iron one? really hoping on those extra points later on all of a sudden lol.
How many points would a Platypus man get?
Just a small note, people should start adding a sentence or two of flavor text to their characters.
More little bits of lore! And yet I still feel as if they do not fit well in the 'Gladiators' spoiler on the front page. Still up for suggestions.Could you add a separate "gladiator lore" spoiler section in with gladiators and fanart spoiler sections?

Lucan Stone the unbreakable
He would die before seeing his name forgotten.
Lucan Stone's search for purpose should become a life quest for his family line. Wouldn't it be cool to see his descendants carry on the torch in future tournaments? A clan destined to have their name carved into stone, even if they have to stand on the backs of their fallen fathers to reach such a lofty quest?

Loving the tournament so far, it's awesome! Could I request that the initial equipment and skill "loadout" for each gladiator is quoted before each match? I think it'd give a better idea of the contestants.

I'm not sure if I appreciate the whole 'odds thing' it seems to take some of the enjoyment out of seeing the actual matches and guessing who will be the winner, but what I'm really concerned about is why the hell did you do 50 matches for each of these fights.
Damn I would have liked to be part of this. Will you be doing another one after this one finishes?
It won't be happening again (Post has been deleted).
P.S. big thanks to Unraveller for setting this up/bringing it to my attention, I'm going to be introducing it to my weekly game night group.
Oh and a quick question to make sure I'm clear. I had 4 points remaining, so does that mean that I have 8 now and if I were to win again it would be 16 afterwards?
Damn I would have liked to be part of this. Will you be doing another one after this one finishes?
Sorry I'm asking so many questions, but I'm unclear on one last thing. After each round do we have to buy our skills and equipment again or do we carry the skills and equipment over? Like I had 4 points left last round so would I have 248 this that I would have to use to purchase all my skills and gear again or could it go to furthering the skills I had last time?

Unfortunately my gif recording thing has crashed twice trying to do this. I tire of setting it up. Would anyone else like to do the little loser's battle royale for me? I'd be very grateful.
Ooh, very nice drawing of Sath. I assume he's also noted for the two enormous scars he has just below the knee on both legs, and the disgusting gremlin-blood stains all over him.

Alrighty, I'll be updating the gladiators soon and getting ready to start some action. Though I would like it for whoever plans on hosting the loser's battle royale to do it before I begin.
Alrighty, so I'm thinking next tourney will see tiny creatures have their points scaled back a bit. And some buff to huge creatures as well, perhaps some scaling points as the tourney goes on so they do not fall behind so quickly?
Alrighty, so I'm thinking next tourney will see tiny creatures have their points scaled back a bit. And some buff to huge creatures as well, perhaps some scaling points as the tourney goes on so they do not fall behind so quickly?
I reckon that would be good! And if they already get a huge point bonus/penalty for being small/huge, does the dodge discount/markup really make sense? I might be overthinking that, but i dunno.
Scaling actually seems to defeat the risk of lower points bur more raw power.
I would adjust the points some, but idk about scaling over time. Maybe give tinies a bit less, huge a bit more; I'd agree with removing the dodge discount, except tinies won't fair exactly well on equal grounds as armor isn't as useful? It'd be worthwhile to see how somewhat rebalanced point amounts would work first.
I mean, we get hit, we go squish. Can't even use shields! :P
I do agree that the point difference is noticeable pretty quickly in dodge specialist tinies. Then again, most players aren't building bigger chars similarly... it could be a deeper issue that hitting hard and fast is just deadly in inexperienced fighters in the game. Last game for example, Varick got destroyed by another kobold with a more focused skillset. Specialists are very effective.
Anyway! Less tiny points, more huge points, sounds like a decent idea to me.
-snip-
Naw, I think One Bow Juan from before did well? Also, archers might want misc objects user for meleeing with their bows. Crossbow users might be a superior choice.
And if you'd like to know, your kobold actually won the royale while I was trying it, though my gif stuff kept crashing.
Bows as swords.
If it was overlooked minotaurs would be raining supreme right now.

As far as I know. Absolutely not, the only thing that cannot be done id the flaming maul, which I also think wouldn't make any difference in weapon effectiveness.

As a sidenote, I lasted longer than I expected to. If Setro hadn't got the bite in, I would have lasted probably an extra few turns before I bled out anyways. Still, GG.

I did enjoy how I was defending fairly well even with me guts on the ground. A true dwarf's death, much more respectable than my battle with Varick.
Also, I think I got the kill on Ajax... he bled out, but I'll say it was out of the hole where his leg used to be :P
(Sorry for the long post, hehe)
It'll take more than a few shakes of the head to put Kieran down!
It's a shame he's always been on the receiving end of venom...I feel like venomous creaturemen need a bit of a nerf. One bite and they're pretty much home free.
I really like the concept of alt-tournament with the eliminated gladiators, like the grand melee we did. It could keep things interesting during intermissions, and give more time to the arena master and the active gladiators to post results and level-up info. It also makes the fun last longer, which I don't mind ! Different style of games could be organized, like melee, 2v2, team vs huge monster, etc.

Perhaps. On the other hand, the venom attack isn't likely to be used unless your character is completely unarmed.
But then it's as if the character is already starting with a weapon, and the rest can be dumped into skills. A human with less points pretty much needs to purchase a blade as well as skillsBut it doesn't scale and is rendered less effective if your opponent builds armor. Plus it uses unarmed skills so if you wanted to wield weapons you'd be splitting your points. Something the human doesn't need to do for his steel/copper weapon which works far better against armored foes. Compared to choosing to use whips it may even be less of a consideration. And that human with a sword has a good chance at one shot-ing you if he hits.
this crazy bugger sold Snamozaspna into slavery with the goblins to begin with. An evil slave driver, can Thud hope to thud this hyena?

Miss Icoricera, the lovely elven mistress who also happens to have been a veteran during many elvish conquests. Oh well, he survived either way so that's all that matters. I checked my post history, I dumped 240 points into his sword skill bringing it to Accomplished and had 8 points left over. However I didn't repost his updated stats like everyone else so maybe that's what happened.
Definitely a good fight. Yeah I figure when Thud finally does get hit he's going to shatter rather quickly. So long as he makes a spectacle of it that's fine by me :)
I've been wounded. This is annoying.
Would someone like to be a guest announcer for the rest of this elimination round. I've been quite busy lately and haven't been able to spend enough time doing these. I have recorded all the matches, but would someone like to annotate them in my format?
Yay! Thanks for covering for me, I currently don't have computer access, so it'd be difficult to do.

Dorian, you coward!
Ohh, Nice job crundle ! My money would have been on Dorian.
And glory to our new assistant to the arena master !
What was that little dance they seemed to do in the gif?I'm guessing they were each deciding to pathfind closer to the other, but chose different direction. Repeat a few times.
Dammit :( Shotgun Gai will be back again, someday he'll be champ! He's gonna be, the very best!
I thought surely, a helmet forged from the strongest material known to dwarf would be sufficient to guard Tortox' noggin from a mere copper whip. Good game, Klackon.
Thank you Mavell, I'm glad you did it because I know I couldn't pull that shit off
Thank you very much for covering me Mavell, I really appreciate it, round of applause everyone?
Wow, that match between Cerol and Dorian was close! That lash to the neck moments before Dorian bled out... if he had lasted just a little longer, Cerol would have been helplessly passed out and would certainly have lost.
I'll update as soon as I am able, at work right now.

Right!? Upon further research, it's clear I should have just ditched the fighter skill and put the rest into lashing, dodging, and shielding. Next time....
But for now I've got my money on Cerol to win it all.

Are we even sure entirely what Fighter does?
Its use or significance is currently not known. However, when tested in arena mode with two dwarves, one unskilled and one grand master fighter, the one with fighter skill won consistently while armed with any of the default weapons. Unarmed dwarves showed no preference.
I think that it could be useful for an ant-woman or jumping-spider-man if they use a different weapon in each arm.
Alright, here's my update. I found an error in my point costs in the previous round - it only took 54 points to increase Cerol's Dodging (tiny) skill from Proficient to Adept, not 56. As a result, I had 14 points left over last round, not 12. I've made the corrections to his old stat block, here they are:Spoiler: Corrected Old Stats (click to show/hide)
So this round, Cerol has double the 14 points left over from the previous round, plus 360 from being a crundle, for a total of 388 points to spend this round. I'll spend 346 points to improve his Dodging (tiny) skill from Adept to Grand Master.

There is obvious balance needed. This will be worked on after the tourney.
Yes, balance is definitely needed. It might be as simple as narrowing the point gap between the largest and smallest races, and adjusting all others in between accordingly. Or perhaps smaller races would start out with more initial points, with equal point awards for winning matches.+1 to the bolded.

I can't believe Cadedi is still in game. I'm no confident for her next match however...

The best defense is completely paralyzing your opponent!
I feel that 150 points would not be much. Having everyone have less points doesn't seem fun. I'm trying to find a way to balance that, but I always end up with impractical and overly complicated solutions.Having thought about it a bit more, more than that might be good yes. It's hard not to unintentionally get all overelaborate with solutions and alterations.
Sssath'sss time in the arena wasss ssso brief, but ssso tasssty!
A fine round of fights! Shame about Thud's match, I was hoping for a real slobber knocker. On a side note that damn snake is scary!
ahm, please someone update varick with idk lasher and then fighter skills. I am on mobile briefly but typing is seriously not fun with my arm right now so I'd appreciate it a lot.
:-\ Sorry for any delay again. still loving reading the matches but sitting at my desktop to update hurts.
edit he should have 290+28 so 318 i believe
looks good now let the fighting begin
Oh hey, it's the amazing artist Foxtrot! (Rolling 1d20 for flattery skill check) While we're waiting for the arena master, perhaps you could draw up the regal armored serpent anxiously waiting to sink his teeth into some delicious Thud flesh? <3
I don't know, but being amphibious, they could be cool on a map with lots of water. However, the min size to equip a great axe one-handed is 77500. Reptile-men being 50000, it might not work. No idea what the rules are for multiple heavy weapons.
Oh ! Well then, I don't know much about statistics but I think that a monitor lizard man with two great axes would be terrifying.Perfect.
Question for the more statistically inclined amoung us, just purely objectively, and in no way directly related to my next potential tournament gladiator entry, how terrifying would you expect a monitor lizard man wielding two great axes to be?

Of course!

Not at home now, but I can run a few statistical tests tomorrow if you show me the variations. However, my earlier testing indicated that the kobolds seemed to fare better with one dagger and more skill than with two, but then again my testing used to have a lot of flaws. Probably still does.

This is after 1000 fights between Monty vs. Ilpi. As a reward, the winner is slain, of course. Don't want old injuries to interfere with the !!SCIENCE!!. So in total there are 2000 corpses and countless body parts here. If you were wondering what that 2 in the peaceful meadow is, it's Dark Gnome 344's right lower arm. Actually all the body parts outside the arena are Dark Gnome body parts, but there's also a decent amount of human blood outside.
(For FPS reasons, all liquids were removed and usually the arena is cleaned between fights)
I was wondering if drgnlord made a mistake in his simulator, or find out exactly how lucky Monty was to win that fight. Indeed he was incredibly lucky. After 4000 simulated fights, I found that Dark Gnome 3730 managed to beat the human battle axe wielder. If the probability is indeed 1/4000, that's like getting 12 tails in a row with a fair coin or getting Four of a kind in five card stud poker. Not impossible, but very lucky!
Here's some data which shows what happens to the win ratio when whip skill is increased:Spoiler: Monty vs Ilpi (click to show/hide)
Well done Princess,
Il defeat your gladiator one day Tesseract,
one day...
Victory ! That match was intense! I bit his thumb before opening him and lashing his organs.
wonder if mounted combat would be a thing next season. I learn that you can stack loads of combatants onto a single mount.
and creatures with MOUNT tokens can be used in arena as ridden combatants. so tournament owner could just slap the mount token on everyone/thing and set up more match types.
then again this leads to the question how many points does it take for someone to buy a bull or cat to ride into battle?
haven't tested if sharks could be mounted and thus allows for Sea battles, Whale vs Whale Team battles.

Why haven't team gladiator matches been put in?
