Okay, gonna try this and probably fail.
This is a variation of RtD which uses a d13 instead of a d6, basically, you want 7, as that's the perfect balance between failure and success.
Getting 1 is catastrophically bad (the gun explodes, killing you) and 13 is catastrophically good (the gun explodes, killing the enemy). Both critical scenarios leaves you disarmed.

You could give them 10 000 HP for all I care (warning, having too much HP might ironically kill your character).

If you want to balance it, it has a 3-5 turn effect (i.e. he can use this ability once each turn for 3-5 turns), with a 6-10 round opposite effect, where he either takes one fewer action, is forced to reroll and takes the lesser of the two, or reduces a strength or stamina roll by 1 away from 7.
