Title: The Bay12 DF Gladiator Challenge Tournament - Reborn! III
Post by: Unraveller on July 14, 2015, 05:35:52 pm
Welcome, Welcome! To the arena!

Hello everyone, almost a month ago I began the second tournament through the object testing arena, it was an awesome success. You may find the link to it right here here (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=151339.0). Well, I hope we are going to have an even greater tournament this time! Here is all the rule thingies!

Again, congratulations to Princess Klackon-Ktsss-Ktss and her manager Tesseract for their excellent performance in the first arena.

An Introduction

What is this?

A Fight to the death! Dwarf, Human, Elf, and countless other creatures locked in Mortal Kombat!
Arrows Flying! Swords Slashing! Blood and Guts Spread Across the Arena Floor!

To what end?

Countless Riches? No
Honor? Glory? Fame? Perhaps
To be recognized as the strongest, fastest, or cleverest? Most Assuredly
But most importantly, to earn the title:

CHAMPION OF THE ARENA

You'll be the best! Songs will be song about your skills in the ring! Your name will never be forgotten!

At least until the next tournament, of course.

Who came up with this?

It wasn't me, I assure you! In fact, it was our lovely friends at the SomethingAwful forums who deserve the credit.
One Bard, in particular, deserves high praise indeed!
He is the Founder of the Fight, the Mediator of Discord, the Grand Master himself!

Vox Nihili

We are but feint imitators in comparison

What Format Will the Tournaments Take?

There are many possibilities: Single-Elimination, Double Elimination, Round Robin, etc. It could be Team based, or a Free For All!. The format for any particular tournament will be decided by the Arena Master beforehand.

How many people can join a tournament?

It Depends on the format and how much interest there is! However, typical sizes are 16, 32, or 64.

How do I join?

It's easy! Usually you'll just have to post a message declaring your interest, and include your Gladiator's name and race!

I don't know much about Dwarf Fortress. What race is best? What Weapons and Armor should I use?

Only the base essentials are provided in the thread. Since this is competitive, its up to you to figure out whats best. Feel free to ask any questions in the thread or on the forums. A good source of information is the Dwarf fortress wiki found at http://dwarffortresswiki.org/ (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview and Rules
These Rules( including the point system ) were originally developed by the esteemed Vox Nihili at the SomethingAwful forums, and were changed throughout the incarnations.

The Arena Master

The Arena Master runs the tournament. His or Her duties are extensive. They include, but are not limited to, the following: Maintaining and updating these rules, recruitment, running the battles and writing commentary, and settling all disputes that may arise in a just and timely manner. It is essential that the Arena Master remain fair and unbiased. I, Unraveller, shall humbly serve in as the Arena Master for this tournament, and pray that I didn't miss some post that banned these kind of games.

Joining as a Gladiator

Before the start of a tournament the Arena Master will decide on the tournament format, including whether or not a gladiator's skills and equipment will be known to all or kept secret. The first is called a Open Tournament and the latter is called a Blind tournament. The tournament format will also dictate the number of gladiators who may join, or at least a series of upper limits. For example, in a single elimination tournament typical sizes are 16, 32, 64, etc. In order to join, all you must do is announce your intention to join in this thread, along with your Gladiator's name and race. If its an open tournament, you will need to post your skills and equipment purchases in the thread before the start of the first match, while in a blind tournament you must send them directly to the Arena Master.

In the event that too many Gladiators wish to spill their blood, the Arena Master may, at his or her discretion: extend the joining period, deny entry outright to the extra combatants, or call for a battle royal to decide who gets the final spot in the tournament. It's first come first serve*, so sign up as early as possible.

*In future tournaments, gladiators who fought in the preceding tournament will have the right-of-way, and a non-random seeding system may be implemented.

About the Tournament

The subsequent post will lay out the details of the current tournament, including whether or not it will be an open or blind tournament, what system it will follow(Single-Elimination, Round Robin, etc.), whether or not its a team game, etc. If there is something that is not clear, please ask.

The Arena

The fighting will take place in a variety of different stages as seen below. The two contestants will agree on a stage to be selected. If they cannot come to a mutual agreement one will be randomly selected.

The Version

The newest version of DF will be used assuming combat and other relevant game mechanics weren't broken. The same version will be used throughout the tournament. The version being used for the current tournament will be listed in the Tournament overview in the next post.

The Races

The most important decision you'll have to make before the start of the tournament is what race your gladiator will be. Which race you chose will determine what equipment you can use, how much damage you can inflict, grant you special abilities, or even extra limbs.

Your race will also determine how many points you get to spend on equipment and skills before each round.  This is mainly for balance reasons, but also to represent smaller creatures cleverness.

The most important distinction between the races, besides the points they receive, is their size. Size effects the amount of damage they will inflict*, and their ability to knock their opponent over. Gladiators that have been knocked over have a nasty tendency to get pulverized(unless they are wearing some nice armor), and is thus a position you'll wish to avoid.

*smaller creatures can generally match their larger counterparts in slashing and stabbing attacks, but bigger opponents are much better at bashing and punching

Some of the more fanciful races have different or extra appendages compared to your average humanoid. This may allow them to wield extra weaponry or armor, but it also may mean they can't use certain items. These differences are listed under the special abilities category.

Races may also have special abilities. For instance, many of the animal-like races can bite in unarmed combat.

Points

Points are the life blood any worthy gladiator. The way you spend them will determine your success in the ring.

As stated in the previous section, the amount of points you get to spend before the tournament depends on your gladiator's race. If you manage to win a match, you will earn the same amount of points to spend on the next round. You do not have to spend any points to heal yourself.

You may spend points on Equipment and Skills, which are summarized below.

Any points left unspent at the end of a round are doubled, for example. Wundle the Crundle has 34 points remaining from the first round. If he reaches the second he would have 68 points in addition to the points he gains from being a Crundle.

Skills

Your gladiator can purchase skills before the start of each round. Skills can be upgraded as many  as 14 times, the first level being Novice and the last being Grand Master.

The first level of each skill is assigned a base price, and the price of each subsequent level is equal to the base price of the skill multiplied by the level of the skill you are purchasing. For example, if your gladiator was a Level 2("Adequate") fighter and wished to purchase the 4th level, it would cost 3 * 3 + 3 * 4 f=  9 points. 3 is the base cost and does not change, multiplied by the levels to be purchased. Note that the cost is cumulative: you must buy all the preceding levels!

What each skill does is fairly self explanatory. Please go to the Dwarf Fortress wiki or ask on the forums if you are unfamiliar with any particular skill.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Equipment

As you've probably surmised, your gladiator will be able to purchase an assortment of equipment, made out of various materials, to wield  in the arena. Equipment can be divided up into two categories: Weapons and Armor.

Note that you cannot make weapons, shields or bucklers, out of leather.

You may sell back equipment before each round for half its original value. You may NOT sell skills back.

A longsword has a base price of 24; if its made of of steel, which has a "cost multiplier" of 4, the total value will be 96 points.

Materials

Materials have gotten complicated in Dwarf Fortress of late. In terms of combat, though, materials have 3 primary properties: Weight, Edge, and Stopping Power. [I take no credit for this chart, its taken directly from the SA thread]

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Weapons

Weapons and Shields(including bucklers), are held in your gladiator's hands. Depending on the race, it may take one-hand or 2-hands to wield any particular object, or they may not be able to wield it at all. Please look at the Race table for a summary. Unless you are fighting unarmed, you should try to use all your hands in combat. Once again, if you have any questions about the abilities a weapon or piece of armor, please feel free to ask, but check the wiki first.

Bows come with 35 free arrows and Crossbows with 35 free bolts and are the same material as the ranged weapon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Armour

Generally, you can only wear one of any type of armour. Think in terms of body parts, and test your combination out in dwarf fortress to see if it works. If you (or I) notice a problem after the current round is underway, it can't be fixed until the current round is over. For example, you can't wear both leggings and greaves or low boots and high boots at the same time. There are two exceptions though: you may wear a leather cap under a helm, and you may wear a (non-leather) mail shirt under a breast plate. Gloves, Gauntlets and boots come in sets of two. Also note that shields take up a hand-slot, and aren't worn as such. Shields may also be used as weapons and are dependent on the Misc. object skill.

Rule Changes

From Bay12 2st edition
- In an effort to balance the disparity from tiny creatures and huge creatures their points have been adjusted.
- The dodging skills have been combined into one skill making the size classifications irrelevant.
- The lashing skill has been increased in price, while swords, hammers, and maces have been decreased. Hopefully this will promote more variety in weaponry.

You may also wish to know that times between 12:00 P.M. to 5 P.M. EST are when I stream on twitch (http://www.twitch.tv/unraveller), it will be impossible for me to post during those times, streaming has become a big part of my life but it also takes a lot out of me, forgive me if I am slow to post.

Im going to enter Mogwai the Devious again. For the last tournament, I was out of reach of the internet for 4 days and when I got back it was already full  :(.

Mogwai the Devious

Gremlin: 310 points

Equipment:
2 Bronze Daggers: 32 each: 64 points  -  can one of the knives be bismuth bronze? Their stats are absolutely
identical  in the raws and I would like to be able to tell which hand is
doing what, or at least that they are both doing something.

Skills:
Adept Dodger (7): 140 points
Talented Knife User (6): 105 points

140+105+64=309
1 point left.

Oh, and if the small bonus to dodging is actualy in effect, it should be added to the chart; and if it is not in effect this match then the refferences should be removed from the initial post. Same for the large dodging penalty.

Since the jumping spider man was 270 in last tournament, I'm gessing it's still that.

equipment:
2 x iron long sword : -96

skills:
talented observer : -63

Just because you were a champion, doesn't mean you can make up the rules! Points have been drastically rebalanced, you will have 260 points.

How many points would a bark scorpion man be?

250 for those tails of poison, luckily nowhere near as deadly as serpent men.

And good job everyone else, lets keep em flowing in hopefully. I shall update the roster soon.

I mention this in the other thread that I was fiddling around in arena and notice you can set up mounts or mount exotics and have riders.
though you need to have a race with the [MOUNT] token on to get this effect vanilla should have a small set of animals to let you do this.
some modding could lead to adding this to every race leading for more creative options for gladiators to fight with.

Right, but it will probably become a balancing nightmare for me. What costs what? Ya know, if someone wants to mess around with that stuff, and hell even have their own tourney. I wouldn't mind.

Welcome aboard! 265 would be a better point score, considering the whole flight aspect. And a kobold is 280 with a meager size of 20,000.

Are there still spots? If not, I would like to enter.

Urist McAntman, the soldier ant woman

Iron short sword-40 points
3x oak buckler- 67.5 points

Talented Swordantman- 105 points
Adequate Shield- 12 points
Novice Doger- 5 points

Total- 229.5/230 points. 0.5 points remaining.

This soldier ant woman lived in the first cavern layer below a dwarven fortress. One day, a massive force of goblins riding jabberers attacked the fortress. The dwarves killed the goblin, but several dwarves died, causing a tantrum spiral. In the end, nearly every dwarf died from either going insane themself or by being beaten to death by a berserk dwarf. One berserk military dwarf ran down into the caverns and chopped most of the poorly armed antman tribe into pieces before this soldier ant woman managed to chip one of his bones with a shield bash, then stabbed him in the head with a fungiwood spear for three days before she managed to jam his skull through his brain through his artifact candy helmet. She then walked to the surface, got an iron goblin sword to replace the rather worthless spear, and wandered off. Eventually, she arrived here.

The great dwarven fortress of Uristabod had a problem.

Fath Akrulular, the expedition leader. After serving for years, fighting against elven aggression, she was passed over for nobility in favor of a new arrival.

Bitter with anger, and sufferring from depression she killed the new duchess in a fit of rage. Stealing artifacts from the fortress she fled in the night.

Wroth, she destroyed them outside the fortress, and killed a craftsdwarf who was looting the bodies of the last elven siege. Stealing the wooden weapons she had been retrieving, she fled, to a place where she might finally find recognition.

The Arena.

Good luck with that strategy.

Is there a point modifier for making a character vampiric?

Unfortunately not, I do not know how well this would affect their abilities in combat, and I'd rather keep this already complex thingy simple.

In Adventure Mode, becoming a vampire doubles your Strength, Agility, and Toughness. So I imagine in the object testing arena it would do the same: make you hit twice as hard, move twice as fast, and halve the damage you take.

Are silver Crossbows ok? With being not craftable by Dwarves in fortressmode and such...

If yes, here comes Burz-Groll Durk

Troll ♂(+140?)

Skilled Crossbowtroll (-50)
Novice Hammertroll (-5)
Novice Dodger (-5)

Silver Crossbow (-78)

Points remaining: (2)

One day, after casually destroying another Dwarven mountainhome, Burz-Groll Durk took another look at the big scary machines that killed so many of his friends and family. When they arrived, he heard the Dwarves screaming something that sounded like:" Get to da baulistes!", or something like that. So after playing around with it for a while and impaling one of these annoying cats by accident, he decided to take his new tow with him. And after countless minutes (at least for a Troll) of intense training, the first shouldermounted Ballistatroll was born!

After hearing of the big tournament, where you could smash things to pieces, Burz-Groll Durk didn't think long about it and got on his merry way to blood and carnage.

Some other cool racial make ups would be a centaur(not sure if that's available), a snapping turtleman(aka the ninjas turtle),  a cave crockman, or the ferocious mythical undead elaphantman.  The snailman was a good choice.  Glad to some classic races in there, and these Spidermen sound scary as the circus itself.

To be completely honest, I'm just excited to watch my gladiator's face get mutilated in the first round. Real exciting stuff.

Against my test opponents, my gladiator had a win rate of roughly 20%, and the wins were total flukes.
I had another, much more successful gladiator (~80% win rate)... but they were far too similar to the Ant Princess of the last tournament, so I scrapped 'em. (BTW Anybody know the amount of points an octopus-man gets?)

That's the fun of DF, isn't it? Seeing people trying to run to the other side of a room, only to find thier internal organs beat them there.

Do you have any good tutorials on it... For as many hours I've put into the game I've yet to even open arena mode, but this is getting me really excited at the possibilities.

You do not need a tutorial for it, arena mode is definitely the most simple and straightforward mode there is.

K to look around and place creatures, all you really have to do is pay attention to the keys on the interface.

I decided to make some changes to make more of a unorthodox gladiator that i think might be pretty effective. heres the new build!

Lucette Stone, Daughter of Lucan.
Human-210
2x Iron buckler-120
Leather Helm, breastplate, greaves-25

Adequate fighter-9
Proficient shield-40
Adequate Dodger-15
Points left-11

Torn between devastation at her Fathers death and shame for his failure Lucette Stone has come to the arena in an attempt to thrive where her father failed.

As you can probably tell this is mostly just hoping i can block regularly enough to outlast my opponents! I dont really expect it to go that well but heres hoping!

This is all very true. Although, if you want to know what my main test opponent was:

-Human
-Steel 2H Sword
-Proficient Dodger
-Proficient Swordsman
-Copper Mail Shirt

I'm just recounting this off of memory, so don't quote me on it. I've got it written down somewhere, just can't find where.
It's good to have many varied test opponents, so you can find the best or most versatile set-up for your character.

I didn't think I'd have time to put in a gladiator this month, but apparently it took more time than last time to get a full group.

Here goes my next little monster, a goblin this time, coming all the way from The Destined Plane where he used to wreak havoc. He chooses the knife as his favored weapon this tourney.

Kutsmob Dangodna of the Infamous Malice
Race: Goblin
220 points
Bronze large dagger: 32 points
Expert knife user: 180 points
Total: 212 points, 8 left over

Please forgive me everyone. lately my streaming has become a bigger part of my life, (500 followers yay!) And has left me physically and emotionally drained afterwards to the point of just wanting to sleep.

Perhaps someone could actually take over this tourney for the time being? I shall still be here to over view it and edit the main post as necessary. If not updates may simply come at a somewhat sluggish pace.

I don't mind a slow pace either, but don't feel pressured to continue if it takes too much on you. It's just that your commenting of the fights is of high quality and I doubt we'll be able to top it.

By the way, I don't understand why gaming streams exist, but I have checked yours out of curiosity. I did not expect to hear such a nice voice.

an upper size limit has already been discussed, I don't remember what the limit was, but given the fact the a sperm whale man is the largest humanoid in the game I would say thats over the limit.

Right, due to my lack of free time I must concede to give the matches for this tourney only to Mavell_Duceau. Who did an excellent job of narrating them last tourney. Streaming has become a large part of my life and I may have to completely hand the reigns over to someone in the future. But for now I will simply say that for the next tourney, I promise to be far more punctual.

Tomorrow after my stream I shall give all of the battle logs and battle gifs to my good replacement and things can get started. Again, please forgive my absence!

Elimination I Match I
Neezentoz the Dwarf VS. Gorl, the Beheader

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Welcome, welcome one and all, to the Arena!
After successfully bribing the janitor-ettin into killing three guards to gain access to the commentator's booth, I've returned once more to bring you the finest of gladiatorial bouts! Never mind the other commentator, i hear he's off on holiday. Some place called... What was it, um.. Ship-killed? Oh, never mind. Anyway, let the games begin!
We begin this night of carnage and bloodlust with a classic match on the Water Hazard arena!

Facing off today, we have Neezentoz the Dwarf, four foot of leather-bound fury armed with a silver hammer! Standing at 60,000 Urists of bone, muscle, and alcohol, his honed dwarven musculature can crush even the sturdiest of foes, but will he triumph in this match?

And against him is Gorl, the Beheader! He may be clad in a harlequin's motley of metals, but with an iron axe too big for his opponent to even swing, this neck-thirsty human is a force to be reckoned with. Weighing in at 70,000 Urists, this gladiator makes an imposing figure. Will he add another dwarf head to his collection? Let's find out

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Ahh, first blood in the arena! Nothing like a christening with a dashing of human brain. After an initial flurry of deft parries and dodges, Neezentoz crushes his human opponent's hand with a single blow! Unable to swing his axe to defend himself, the stalwart human quickly crumbles as his skull gets reduced to a pile of bone chips by his foe's silver hammer.  A resounding victory for Neezentoz the Dwarf!!!

Elimination I Match II
Emm the Swift VS. Leg'olam the Delicious

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Oh, i love the smell of roasting gladiator in the morning! We're in Heat Stroke for the second round of this tournament, and the heat is cerainly getting to me. Well, no matter. It's worth the discomfort to see gladiators being turned into so much soup inside their beloved armour. Screams! Burning! Burning screams! We have it all in Heat Stroke!

Our first gladiator is a sly one. Emm the Swift, a tiny little kobold wearing naught but their own hide. Surely such a thing couldn't be threatening, you think? Then we see her pride and glory, a dagger sharper than the finest steel ever forged. How a 20,000 Urist kobold got their hands on the dwarves' Adamantine supplies is a mystery, but  knife like that will cut close to anything. Will it be the end of the kobolds elven opponent?
Speaking of whom, our second competitor is a culinary delight mighty gladiator. Leg'olam the Delicious, standing at 60,000 Urists of graceful tree-hugging hippy! They're equipped with oaken armour! Funny, you say, until you see the steel longsword slung across their back. Sheepish they might be, but this elven gladiator is not to be trifled with!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Woah, uh... I, i may have blacked out for a moment there. The heat from the magma and all, i'm used to rather chillier locales. How embarrassing. Apologies for that. But blackouts aside, this was an impressive match! In the flurry of opening blows neither gladiator missed a blow, with Leg'olam paralysing Emm's right leg with her second strike! Unfortunately for Leg'olam, that didn't stop the diminutive kobold stabbing them in the guts, followed by a stab to the foot so painful that Leg'olam passed out! And after that, all it took were two stabs from Emm's shimmering blade to end the elves gladiatorial prospects. Emm the Swift wins! The janitor eats well tonight.

Elimination I Match III
Arach the Solitaire VS. Taz the Devil

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Here we are, for this tournament's first round on that fine vintage of a map, Klassic!

On one side of the arena, we have a Jumping Spider Man! Wearing naught but the carapace Armok gave him, and armed with a pair of sturdy iron longswords, Arach the Solitaire enters the arena! With six arms, standing in at a mere 35,000 Urists, this talented arachnid is more than capable with his blades! Will his enormous collection of limbs triumph over his porcine opponent?

The foe in question is brawny in more ways than one, it's none other than Taz the Devil! Clad in leather and armed with a reliable copper warhammer, this imposing Wild Boar Man weighs in at an imposing 75,000 Urists. This betusked boar is an enemy not to be messed with!

Will the arachnid swordsman beat out his hammerwielding boar opponent? Or will Taz swat his foe like a fly with a rolled up newspaper? Let's find out!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

A wild frenzy of blows sparks between the two gladiators! Taz gets in the first few blows, putting some nasty bruises in Arach's carapace, but Arach replies with a stab to the foot, knocking over Taz! They trade blows even as Taz lies on the ground, but Arach gets in some sly blows to the limbs of his opponent, and Taz passes out in agony! From there the fight is short-lived, with Arach stabbing Taz twice in the head, his second blow splitting the Devil's skull in two. Arach the Solitaire Wins!

Elimination I Match IV
Korus the Shield-Bearer VS. Mafol Cobaltpatterned the Flickering Savage-fist of Targets

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Ahh, the tranquil fields of Peaceful Meadows. The tinkling brook. The rustling leaves. The blood-stains deeply ingrained into the soil. There's just something about this place that I love.

Our two gladiators today are Korus the Shieldbearer, an enormous gladiator weighing in at 220,000 Urists. Against him stands Mafol Cobaltpatterned the Flickering Savage-fist of Targets. Other than his mouthful of a name, he weighs in at a stout 60,000 Urists.

Korus is an odd minotaur. Eschewing the huge bladed and blunt weapons of his peers, he's armed only with a shield and his own skills, fighting with his shield as a weapon. And the fact that he's strong enough to pop most people's heads like an egg.

Mafol, on the other hands, is a veteran Marksdwarf. What beasts must he have slain to get such an impressive title? One can only dream. He'll be relying on his skill with the crossbow to put down his foe before they can even touch him, or to beat them sensless with the butt of his bow if they close the distance.

It's time to find out who will win! Let the battle commence!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Spraying bolts like a one-man army, Mafol rains fire upon his foe. But Korus is no fool, and he dodges the first, and simply blocks the second with his copper shield. From there the fight goes poorly for Mafol, being soundly beaten into unconsciousness by his bullish opponent. The instant he collapses, Korus flattens Mafol's skull against the grass of the arena. Korus the Shield-bearer Wins!

Elimination I Match V
Snuggles VS. Bronan the unbreakable

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Here we are back at Heat Stroke! And this time I've taken off the third layer of warm clothing. Perhaps it's for the better.

On one side of the arena is the adorable, deadly Snuggles! Brightly coloured and parrotlike, this winged humanoid is a real threat in this arena! The power of flight means no accidental dodges into lava for this competitor. But will this 35,030 Urist Lovebird man's crossbow skill be enough to take down his beefy opponent?

Standing opposite the crossbowbird is Bronan the Unbreakable! Buck naked, incredibly sweaty, armed with his enormous horns, and fond of tearing people in half for a giggle, this 220,000 Urist Minotaur Wrestler is a sight to behold. More than his tail is swinging in the breeze today, but will he be able to catch his flighty foe?

Regardless of who loses here today, there's one thing I can guarantee. The smell will be DELICIOUS. Let's get started!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Straight out of the gate, a bolt from Snuggles takes off Bronan's left pinkie finger! Swooping above the lava, Snuggles tries frantically to reload, but a gouging blow from Bronan's huge hands numbs Snuggles' arm, leaving them with no choice but to try and club the Minotaur to death with the bow! The talented gladiators dodge each others blows for quite some time, until Bronan snags Snuggles by the arm, and immediately puts him into a shoulder lock. he wastes no time in nearly tearing Snuggles' left arm off, before going wild with a flurry of gores from his intimidating horns at Snuggles head until a final blow reduces Snuggles's head to mince. Bronan wins, short one finger.

Elimination I Match VI
Furry Fury VS. Doc McStabbins

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Welcome back! We're here at Castletop, one of the rarer arenas. Taking place on a large pyramidal structure, the gladiators had best watch their feet!

Our first contestant is Furry Fury! Given their name by their goblin slave-masters, this ironclad Yeti it totally happy about being here. Really. over the moon. They totally wanted this. The very largest of our gladiators, at 300,000 Urists, this monolithic monster fights with only their bare hands. Seeing as their bare hands probably weigh more than their opponent, this may not prove too much of an issue.

Across from them stands Doc McStabbins! Where this theiving horror got their medical license is anybody's guess, but no-one can contest their kill count, even if most of it is from malpractice. They've got shield, spear, and a mean streak the size of their foe. This 20,000 Urist "Man of medicine" is ready to brawl!

Time to see who shall win and who shall fall! Enter the Gladiators!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Immediately, the gladiators clash furiously. The tiny kobold blocks blow after blow from the enormous yeti. Suddenly, Furry Fury charges, bowling over Doc! He quickly recovers,  but two blows in succession shred Doc McStabbins' eyelid, and let Furry Fury grip the Doc's leg. From there the Yeti's wrestling skills come into their own, hefting up the Kobold and charging away with him in tow, before tossing him away. Then he grabs the poor kobold by the nose, punches him in the guts, and hurls him across the arena by his nose. In a horrible display of friction, gravity, and the strength of a Yeti, Doc McStabbins is pulverised across the ramps of the arena, with his chest burst into a mess of pulped flesh. Furry Fury Wins, but probably isn't happy about it.

Mogwai the Devious VS. Rama the Under-Bane

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

We're back on Klassic for this match, and boy is it a doozy! A new face in the arena; Rama, the lone survivor of a dwarven incursion into an amphibian-man tribe, is facing off against the famous Mogwai the Devious, the second placed gladiator from the very first tournament!

Rama the Under-Bane is here to fight for justice, unity, and more dead dwarves. With the warhammer she found discarded from the ruins of her tribe, she's determined to win. Weighing in at a slim 20,000 Urists, and clad in oaken plate, there's more to this diminutive amphibian than meets the eye.

and Mogwai, sweet Mogwai. A vicious, nasty piece of work, weighing in at an even smaller 10,000 Urists and armed with bronze daggers, this gnashing little Gremlin is here to go all the way this time. Being beaten by a Kobold just gave him more reason to be angry, and he'll be channeling that devious, devious rage into stabbing tonight!

Gladiators, FIGHT!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Rama opens the fight with a vicious charge, knocking over Mogwai. He hops straight back up however, and the two tiny gladiators exchange a flurry of blows, dodging flawlessly until Rama gets in a lucky strike and pulverises Mogwai's neck! Mogwai tries to go on, but drops a dagger, and collapses. Try as he might, Mogwai can't land a blow as Rama pulverises his feet, his arm, and his lung, before finishing him off with two mighty blows to the skull. Mogwais hopes of glory are crushed, and Rama wins the match!

Elimination I Match VIII
Askak the bark Scorpion Man VS. Ozok Knifetroll

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

We're in the lofty heights of Vertigo, for a match that looks to be interesting, with unorthodox tactics on both sides

On one side, we have what clearly looks to be a troll, but is completely convinced that it's a gremlin. It's Ozok Knifetroll! His knife might be smaller than his fingers, but that's not going to stop him going on a stabfest with his foster races traditional weapon.

And against him stands a Bark Scorpion Man by the name of Askak. In what some say is a cunning strategy, and others say is literally suicide, Askak's manager has given his gladiator literally no training or equipment! Will this bold strategy pay out?

Let the fight begin!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Askak opens with a snatching grip on Ozok's arm! Unfortunately he then immediately has his first right upper arm completely removed, and loses his grip. Ozok then methodically gores and slashes his way through nearly the entirety of Askak's grasping parts, until Askak grips his neck in his last pincer, a move which is replied to with a swift decapitation. Askak's bet didn't pay off, and Ozok wins the round!

Koztan the Wanderer VS. Urist McAntman

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

We're back in Water Hazard, and facing off across the arena is a pair of seasoned fighters. Between them there's three arms apiece, let's see some more details.

Koztan the Wanderer is the son of a guard, and the sole survivor of a great siege. Armed with an iron spear, and clad in stout leather, this PTSD-ridden human weighs in at 70,000 Urists, plus an additional 40,000 urists of emotional baggage.

Facing off from the other side of the arena, and making some unsettling chitinous clicking noises is Urist McAntman. Armed with three tiny oaken guards and an iron sword that they definitely didn't steal from a goblin corpse. I'm still not quite sure how they got here, but here they are!

Human versus humanoid, freakish, bemandibled ant-man, let's see who comes out on top!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Swift dodges mark the opening of this bout, until Urist catches Koztan in the chest and foot! Then Koztan's replying blows are swiftly blocked, and Urist wastes no time in delivering a mighty blow to Koztan's side, before finishing him off with a graceful decapitating blow. Urist McAntman wins the round! And then cries about it a bit, the big ant baby.

Elimination I Match X
Fath Akrulular, the Depressed Official VS. Parker Pete

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Again we've returned to Klassic, for a faceoff between Fath, the Dwarf and Parker Pete, the Brown Recluse Spider Man.

Fath Arkulular, Depressed officiaL, is exactly what she seems. A former expedition leader, when a fledgling newcomer was chosen over them for elevation to nobility, something snapped inside her. She killed, stole, destroyed, and finally fled from her former home, arming herself with equipment from the last elven invasion. She's come here to gain the fame and adoration she feels she deserves, with all 60,000 Urists of weight she can muster.

Across from her is Parker Pete, weighing in at 35,000 Urists. Once a simple giant brown recluse spider, a terrible incident involving a human who'd been drinking from one too many Pitchblende mugs resulted in their transformation into the man-spider you see before you. After some ill-received vigilante work, they've been sent off here, to fight and perhaps to die. How will this arachnid fare in the Arena? We shall see.

Let the fight commence!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Fath wastes no time getting to work with her curious wooden scourges. The two gladiators trade blows and wounds for a good while, until Parker Pete gets struck with a case of tunnel vision and begins single-mindedly stabbing Fath over and over in the head! Four stabs into his crazed frenzy, Fath's head splits like a rotten melon. Euuuugh. Parker Pete wins!

Elimination I Match XI
Gereth the Avenger VS. Gladiatord of the Wilds

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

This next match takes place in Castletop! Facing off today we have Dwarf and Snail-man, to be locked in combat to the death!

On one side is Gereth the Avenger, weighing in at 35,000 Urists. He's brought something of a grudge to this match, and is ready to shell out some serious vengeance. After his entire tribe save himself was annihilated by dwarves, he's sworn to kill each and every one of them, personally. He's come here to build fame and kill dwarves, and here comes a dwarf.

The dwarf in question is Gladiatord of the Wilds! Not much is known about this dwarfish competitor, other than his fondness for hitting things with an axe, and his boundless ambition to murder his way to the top of the arena! He weighs a solid 60,000 Urists, and has leaves stuck in his beard. What kind of weird blighter doesn't even clean his beard.

It's Snail VS Dwarf, axe vs mace, shield vs copper armour, it's FIGHT TIME!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

The gladiators launch into a brawl immediately, with Gereth smashing out some of the Gladiatord's teeth! More blows are traded, with the odd nick here and there, until a mighty blow to the chest from Gladiatord's axe knocks Gereth's helm from his head and his mace from his grasp. Seeing his chance, the Gladiatord immediately slashes through Gereth's neck, sending his head flying and his body tumbling down the slopes of the Arena. The Gladiatord wins!

Elimination I Match XII
Kutsmob Dangodna of the Infamous Malice VS. Lucette Stone, Daughter of Lucan

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Here we are again on the lofty path of Vertigo! Facing off today are Kutsmob Dangodna, and Lucette stone, dagger against longsword.

Kutsmob Dangodna of the Infamous Malice is a goblin, and a nasty piece of work at that. The little blighter has some freakish knife skills, twirling his dagger menacingly whenever he thinks someone's looking, but he's also completely unarmoured! if he's relying on just a bronze dagger to fight his foe, things could go wrong fast!

And against him is something of a competitive dynasty. Lucette Stone, daughter of Lucan, an unfortunately unsuccessful gladiator from the previous tournament. She's come to redeem her name, win glory, and chop people into teeny little pieces. With sword and shield, and leather armour, Lucette is ready to take down her greenskinned foe!

Noble redemption versus a fondness for stabbing, let the round begin!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Oh dear. In something of a shameful repeat performance for the Stone family, this fight was over in short order. Kutsmob simply stabbed Lucette once in the leg, before tearing her brain with a brutal shanking directly applied to the forehead. Kutsmob Dangodna wins!

Elimination I Match XIII
Swine-rat VS. Krurgak "The Clamps" Thoractor

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

We return again to Heat Stroke, to see some truly monstrous gladiators facing off against one another. We have Swine-Rat the Boar-Woman, against Krurgak the Crab-Man!

Swine-Rat has been a slave all her life, and her last escape attempt earned her a involuntary sentence to the Arena. She's a mighty competitor, weighing in at 75,000 Urists, the second boarfolk in the arena. I'm sure she'll fry up nicely on the hot rocks of the arena. I can already smell the scent of roasting pig trotters coming through her boots.

Facing off against her is the 39,000 Urist, Krurgak "The Clamps" Thoractor! A champion of many smaller aquatic arenas, this bareskinned, unarmed crabman is a master of barepincered brawling, with his terrifying claws pinching many a sensitive organ on his fights. He may be turning a delicious shade of red in the arena heat, but he's still up for a fight!

Slave against champion, boar-woman fighting crab-man! Let the brawl commence!

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Hot damn! In a startling reversal, the veteran brawler goes from finding his first strike blocked, to immediately finding his hips divorced from his torso. A resounding landslide victory for the mighty boar-woman! A round of applause for Swine-Rat and her titanic blow, and a delicious baked crab dinner for the janitor-ettin.

Elimination I Match XIV
SMASH!!! >:( VS. Dokem the Delicious

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)

Here we are in Water Hazard, to see a delectable duel!

On one side is SMASH!!! >:(, a troll. Trolls being noted for crawling around in caverns, killing things and eating them, and eating plump helmets. On the other side is a walking plump helmet. Oh dear.

SMASH!!! >:( is big, intimidating, and very specific about his full name being used. Given that he weighs 250,000 Urists and has a morningstar he can swing hard enough to shatter stone, I don't think I'll choose to disrespect that. Today, we'll see if SMASH!!! >:( is hungry enough to chow down  on his fungal opponent.

Dokem the Delicious, on the other hand, is exactly what he sounds like. Delectable mushroom flesh, in the vague shape of a man armed with shield, spear, and an alarming proficiency with both. They're full of spores, anger, and 50,000 Urists worth of wine and roasts just waiting to happen!

Will the prey become the predator? Or will natures order win out, and will Dokem prove his name?

Spoiler: Battle Gif (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

A stream of blows get traded between the troll and his lunch straight out of the gate! Dokem blocks each of SMASH!!! >:('s strikes, whilst getting small nicks in all the while! Eventually Dokem pulverises one of SMASH!!! >:('s toes with his bare hand, apparently stunning his huge opponent! From there, a stab to the head is followed by a stab to the head, followed by a dozen more stabs  in a grisly prolonged murder, until eventually the stony skull of the trollish warrior splits apart under the rain of stabbings. Prey triumphs, and Dokem the Delicious wins!

On a separate note, the final two rounds in this first elimination will take a little longer to turn up, because reasons.

Thanks for hosting the tournament, Duceau. And Unraveller, don't forget that you don't owe us anything; you already hosted two tournaments and nobody's going to hold it against you. Don't worry about it.

This is getting interesting.....emm managed her first match....for round two I can amp up her skills more.....or I could give her armor.....hmmmmm.....

I'd suggest defensive skills over armour. Without a high Armour level and some decent armour it's just going to be a waste of points, and anything tough enough to protect you (iron, at least) is just going to slow you down.

As for myself, here's Dokem's updated sheet. Good fight, NAV.

Xub, I think you forgot a few points. You get whatever your racial base is, plus double your leftovers. In your case you get six points plus the 220 base for being a dwarf, not just the six.

Blaze, I double-checked your math and it seems you messed up somewhere. You get an extra 280 points plus the twenty-six from your leftovers, leaving you with 586 points. I tallied everything up and you've spent 620 points.

220 to spend.

+25 for Proficient Dodging
+25 for Proficient Hammer
+30 for Talented Armor
+15 for Competent Observer

Same Silver Hammer, Leather helm/mail/gauntlets/boots, the biker bar bouncer from hell.

Think I'm keeping the other 125 in reserve for Neezentoz atm.

It's really not that bad. Just as an example, your Armour skill started at Skilled, for 20 points. The first number listed is the cost for that specific skill level, and the second number is the total cost of the skill. If you then wanted to upgrade your Armour skill to Proficient, you'd simply check the numbers: 10 points to upgrade to Proficient, for a total of 30 points that you've spent on the skill. If you're having trouble, go down to the rank you want and subtract the point cost of your current rank from the total cost; this will tell you how many points you need to get to the chosen rank from where you are now.

To get where you wanted in Armour skill, you'd have to spend 190 points - on that alone. The Grand Master Armour skill was what caught my attention in the first place.

FAKEEDIT: Glad you figured it out. Just PM me if you're having trouble.

Let's break down all the costs here... I'm only ringing up about 460 points, when you should have more than 600 to spend.

Code: [Select]
280 base + 280 for the next round + 2 for doubled leftovers
(562) points to spend
[Equipment]
(39)   points lost from silver warhammer
(9)    points lost from oak mail shirt
(5.25) points lost from oak leggings
(3.75) points lost from oak cap
(3)    points lost from oak low boots
(3)    points lost from oak gauntlets
(104)  platinum war hammer
(48)   iron mailshirt
(28)   iron leggings
(20)   iron cap
(16)   iron lowboots
(16)   iron gauntlets
(295)  points spent on equipment
[Skills]
(105) talented hammerer
(50)  skilled dodger
(42)  talented amour user
(24)  competent wrestler
(9)   adequate fighter
(525) points spent on skills

That leaves you with 37 spare points.

Here is my update for Arach the Solitaire:

Arach the Solitaire
Jumping Spider Man

Lore:
Arach had a great idea. He was going to make a beautiful web on top of the arena to see the fights. He was good at making webs, but not so good at surfing on them. He fell in the arena and is now desperately trying to find the exit.

He tried to ask a wild-boar man for directions but was responded with a whirlwind of blows. What a confusing encounter !

I had 1 point left, so now I have 260 + 2 = 262 points.

new skills:
shield (proficient : 60)

items:
copper shield x2 (150)

total cost : 210

points left : 52

New character sheet:

Arach the Solitaire
Jumping Spider Man

equipment:
2 x iron long sword : -96
2 x copper shield : -150

skills:
talented observer : -63
skilled swordman: -50
skilled dodger : -50
proficient shield user : -60

Total cost : 259 + 210 = 469
points left : 52

Furry Fury
female Yeti

Equipment as before:
Iron mail shirt
Iron helm
Iron high boots
Iron gauntlets

Skills
Novice striker -> Proficient striker - 36
Novice wrestler -> Proficient wrestler - 36
Novice armor user -> Competent armor user -10
Novice swimmer - same
Competent dodger - 30
Throwing as a skill determines your accuracy with thrown items, and the AI will never decide to do that. Throwing another creature is determined by the Wrestling skill.
And there is no base cost for throwing, something like 2 or 3? So:
(3) Novice thrower - 3
5 points left, or
(2) Adequate thrower - 6
2 points left.
Because there was really good nosethrowing going on

Novice fighter - 3
Novice biter - 4
Novice thrower - 1 just for flavor ;)

0 points left

Hey endlessblaze, it's a lot easier to read if you set it up something like this:

Emm the Swift
Kobold
Round 1: 280 points, 13 remaining
Round 2: 306 points, 306 remaining
[Equipment]
Adamantium dagger 192
[Skills]
Knife proficient 75
Remaining 306 points

Underlining just makes it harder to read. Rulodos is correct. You should have 586 points, but you have used 620, so that's 34 points too much. In this round you have 306 points to spend, but you have spent 340.

how many levels do I need to drop her observer?

So, you used 65 points to go from proficient (75) to adept (140) knife user
then you spent 180 points to get expert dodging
at this point, you spent a total of 245 points.

You have 35 points left. You could put 30 points to get skilled observer, and you would have 5 points left that would be doubled next round.

Ok then. I guess I will use those 30 on observer

Oh wait, I made a mistake. Since you had 13 points left, you now have a bonus of 26 points, leaving you with 35 + 26 = 61 points. You could spend as much as 45 in observer to be proficient and keeping 2 extra points.

For clarity, you should post your updated level-up with a format like the one that _italics_ proposed:

Hey endlessblaze, it's a lot easier to read if you set it up something like this:

Emm the Swift
Kobold
Round 1: 280 points, 13 remaining
Round 2: 306 points, 306 remaining
[Equipment]
Adamantium dagger 192
[Skills]
Knife proficient 75
Remaining 306 points

Otherwise it will be a nightmare for the arena master to find and update every gladiator.

You did an amazing job with the matches, don't worry! If you need some extra commentary, you can still find the matches in his past broadcast list on his twitch. I believe they were done the 3rd of August in two parts. Unraveller is quite impressive in his ability to spout entertaining bullshit for hours and hours.  :P

If you need some extra commentary, you can still find the matches in his past broadcast list on his twitch. I believe they were done the 3rd of August in two parts.

Indeed the Nish vs Pelkior battle can be found at around 18:30 of the first broadcast (http://www.twitch.tv/unraveller/v/9550494).
And the Burz vs Reep battle is at 33:00 of the second broadcast (http://www.twitch.tv/unraveller/v/9557562).

Well well well, a ballistatroll? How will he fare against a simple goblin with his knife, I wonder. Not very well, I guess, because Kutsmob is lethal. I let him relax and just practice a little dodging.

Ansgar111, you have 11 points remaining, not 7. You have 4 from the previous round.

-Kutsmob Dangodna of the Infamous Malice-
Race: Goblin, 220 points
Round 1: 220 points, spent 212 points, 8 remaining
Round 2: 236 points, spent 50 points, 186 remaining
[Equipment]
A large bronze dagger: 32 points
[Skills]
Expert knife user: 180 points
Skilled dodger: 50 points

Kutsmob Dangodna (Menace Horrorscrape) declared his loyalty to the new Goblin King by decapitating the old one, but unfortunately this only earned him the "honor" of representing the goblins in the grand tournament.

I'm sorry for asking about that, but I have a question. Is any possibility to have a gladiator with blowgun in the next challenge? :}
