I'm a new player, so this came as a bit of a shock...
So here's a rough side view of what I was trying to do:
# - wall
~ - water
W - well
X - floodgate
L- lever connected to floodgate

#########    WL#
#### ######## #
####      X   #
###############

I was going to mine out the bottom of the river, then close the floodgate when the miner got by, to keep water pressure from flooding my fortress.
Well, the moment the miner broke the the rock, water burst forth, drowning him almost immediately, and sweeping away the Dwarf who was supposed to pull the lever.  With nothing to stop it, the water flooded my whole fortress, drowned both miners, and stranded the rest of them.

I am NEVER making that mistake again.  But hey, losing is fun, right?

I know! Digging out water deep below its surface is CRAZY!

Yeah, water falls quickly. It's water, not slime. Though it moves horizontally like slime unless pressure is on it.

remind me never to go out into space with you.  You'll open the airlock and then be surprised when the whole ship depressurizes and our space dwarves die. Even though you were going to quickly close the exterior door behind you when you left, you still needed the inner doors sealed first!

Is it wrong to look at that kill list and think Dwarf Fortress?

I always built my river-taps from the side... Good thing my instincts told me that  breaching the bottom of a body of water was a bad idea. I guess I took enough baths as a kid ^^
