Actually now that I think about it, a heated stone bedm polished and such, would be really luxurious in some situations. I MANDATE SEVEN FELSITE BEDS *gets swept away in the sudden flush of magma*

These are shinier.
My mattress sits directly on the floor, for what it's worth. Got used to doing things that way in college, when I needed the space above my desk for storage.
However, stiff mattresses are best suited for lying on your back or on your stomach. Sleeping on your side doesn't work out quite as smoothly.

Mattresses.
Why you ask (or dont)? I reallllly get annoyed (cuz im weird) by the fact that my stone loving dwarves sleep on wood bunks. Why cant I make stone beds? Why cant i make a frikken ruby enameled gold encrusted adamantite and aluminum bed (yeah i know....just an example). The answer is obvious currently. Its too hard for my poor wittle stunties to sleep on. Well then, mr handy dandyy clothier should make someone a silk frikken mattress for their poor wittle bruised behinds! unhappy thought = wood bed | happy thought = stone bed | happy thought = plant cloth mattress | happy thought = silk mattress. Oh and remember, it is a crime to remove the mattress tags.........

any thoughts?

I don't think stone beds should give a happy thought. It's basically sleeping on the floor. Stick a mattress on one, then perhaps you would get a happy thought.
Why? Because wood's hard to get. Certainly compared to stone, anyway.
I could see multi-component beds, but they'd need to use harder-to-get materials than just stone. Entirely too much stuff is made out of stone as it is.
It was also the only bed left not soggy after the entire fortress flooded and I abandoned it.

Thats because stones are the dwarf "thing" They live in mountains, underground, what ELSE is there for them to use? Sure, there's wood, but thats hard to get underground.

Most stones are quite soft and supple compared to a tough dwarven body. In fact, my top miner's beard alone is harder than his current wooden bed.
Were Chuck Norris to roundhouse kick stout Udib in the chest... several new elements would briefly come into existence in the resulting cataclysmic explosion of foot flesh, bone, and assorted beard crumbs.
Udib would shrug and continue drinking.

I'm sure they just do it to humor the artifact maker.

Of course the first time they slept in it they'd cover the sheets in the blood and vomit that they've been coated in for the past 35 years. Dwarves only make soap as a trade good, indeed.

Log + Material + (Dwarf with Materialworking) + (Materialworking Shop) = Material Bed.
It sure beats adding a smelter reaction to pop out no-quality steel beds, or editing dogs to drop masterwork steel beds by unknown artists when impaled on spikes.
There really needs to be more uses for cloth and leather anyway, the only things you ever really need to make are bags.

Actually, speaking of using stone for beds, what about orthopedic gravel? Armok help them if my dwarves start doing that, though; the only rock I've got is obsidian.

Which is precisely why beds should be limited to wood or at least alternative should be a big pain in the ass to make (stone bed + matress which is really hard to make).</STRONG>

Why do we make chairs/tables of stone then?
Because those can just be flat and hard.
Beds have to be soft, which is why the soft part is made of a kind of Soft Cork

I couldnt imagine sleeping on a rock, wouldn't it be bad for your body?
-Sleeping on the floor
-Sleeping with a blanket (just cloth)
-Sleeping in a hammock (cloth + some support structure made of wood or stone)
-Sleeping on a pallet (cloth filled with straw/sawdust i.e. plant matter/wood)
-Sleeping on a mattress (cloth, filled with feathers and maybe metal bedsprings)
It'd be a good way to encourage early cloth making. As is I tend to let it sit quite a while.
I agree that bedding would be a nice addition, though, and would make metal or stone beds more believable and viable.
