Title: Dwarf Companion is awesome
Post by: Squeegy on January 27, 2008, 02:23:00 pm
I just accidentally speared my miller with a wooden ballista arrow. Not wanting to lose him and suffer happiness drops, I quickly set him to alive again. He got up OFF HIS CORPSE, began picking up his OWN MISSING LIMBS, and walked off, with red wounds but not actually hurt.

Yeah, cheating's really awesome.

It sure as hell is when it's so weird! Since when do you have two bodies, one dead, and start picking up your arms so you can put them in the graveyard stockpile?

What's fun is in Adventure mode, setting everyone's race to "fairy." Although, I think if you re-enter the place it will probably crash because the game will try to make vermin wear armor, which doesn't quite work. Sometimes I'm like "Transform!" and turn into a bluebird and fly away from everyone. Then I see a carp-filled river, fly over it, turn into a whale, and fight carp.

Indeed it would be awesome...if I could get it to work.

My units don't show up and all I can do with it is the Combat Logs  :(

This sounds quite weird! Are you using it in DF mode or adventure mode? Have you tried clicking on the "all creatures/only dwarves" button?

DF mode, it won't work in Adventure.

What? Cheating is awesome. Hell, even Cap'n Mayday uses Dwarf Companion.

It does work in adventurer mode, you just have to press the 'all creatures' button (and find your guy in the list...)

Cheating is at times necescary - In my view of DF, I want to build a BIG (inser thing here). Wether it be a monument, fortress, or a temple to the blood god, I just want to build it and keep my dwarves happy. When my dwarf goes fey in a map without sand, I will add [SAND] to sandy loam. When I need magma to do something awsome, I will cheat for magma and have fun doing it.

In a game with raw files and an open forum called "Modding" cheating is going to happen. If you don't want to cheat, don't.

This tool is a great way to cheat. Cheating is awsome. Hence, this is awsome.

Fortress and of course. Nothing in return.
I'm PMing bartavelle about it though, to see if maybe he can figure things out.

"Cheating" is only relevant where multiplayer is concerned. In a single player game, if keeping alive dwarves you accidently speared makes the game more enjoyable, more power to you.

If, on the other hand, you start boasting on a forum that you got steel and glass production going in the first year and got the fortress's value up to 1 million but neglected to mention you started with 200 dwarves and heaps of stuff, then that would be lame. You are comparing your results to other players, which would make it multiplayer in parallel. By the same token, if you use utilities without letting others know when playing succession games, that is also lame. Again, multiplayer.

So basically, cheating in single-player is up to the player in question only.
Cheating in multiplayer is the one we look down on people for.

Heh, so could you get a dwarf to engrave a picture of his own death?  That would be a funny read in adventure mode  :)

Yeah, but I don't use it for cheating.

Making near-unstoppable super skeletal dragons that can kill my whole fort isn't really cheating. Nor is healing military dwarves who never receive health care.

I hear you can make zombie dwarves with it as well.  How does that work, exactly?  Do they still work, or do they try to eat the brains of their neighbors?

Still, picking up your own corpse is pretty cool.  "Well, I'd better get around to burying myself.  Such a sad waste of dwarven life..."

They act exactly like Zombies and Skeletons normally act.

Pity...  Few things would be as exciting as creating a fortress of the damned, where your silent minions will shuffle back and forth through the dank corridors, performing the tasks you have set out for them with the steady, unyielding persistence that only the dead can muster.

Got migrants?  Eat some, raise the rest as the walking dead.  Go traders?  Eat some, raise the rest as the walking dead.  Got siege?  Eat some, raise the rest as the walking dead.

No more parties, no more random naps, no more urgent meals or job-halting drinks, only silence and cold...

I'm happy to say that DC works on this computer (Though not my other). Now to figure out how to do things other than heal, hurt and tame.

Undead fortress would be cool.

Should be put in when you can be other races.

Toady has plans on doing that?
I mean, isn't it just one changed tag to enable human, goblin and elf forts?

Undeads are not a race and are treated in a different way.
