Title: Weather Thread
Post by: Yoink on December 18, 2015, 11:50:12 pm
This is a thread for the discussion and appreciation of weather around the world.
Discuss the current weather you are, what you think of it, and how you would prefer the weather to behave.
Here, it is currently a lovely 42 degrees. Celsius, of course- there is no place for whatever strange, foreign units of temperature you may come up with in this thread be sure to make a note if you are using some weird other unit so as to avoid confusion.

Anyway, lately most warm days here have been accompanied by high winds that kinda spoil the fun, but today it is fairly still.
Outside is like an oven. I am about to equip my sunglasses and go out for a walk, to see if I could possibly become any sweatier than I already am inside.

suddenly snow everywhere and cars spinning off the road. massive pileups and highway traffic jams for hours. typical Michigan winter really.

Has been nice all week, 70F and occasional clouds and rain. April weather, really. Today, the weather said "haha fuckers" and dropped to 36F with wind like Boreas after a bowl of chili.

By Christmas Eve, it's supposed to be back up to 75F.

By Christmas Eve, it's supposed to be back up to 75F.
I suppose that's pretty good by US standards... at least you aren't gonna spend Christmas freezing your proverbial off. :)

In other news, the oven-like heat that kept up all day has now given way to a pleasant, light rain at about half past five in the evening.
Or half past six, if you buy into that DST crap. Either way it's pretty nice. Still warm, just raining outside. Gonna finish my beer and go for a stroll.

It's been wind and rain for the last few weeks here in Scotland.  Which, well, it's Scotland so quelle surprise.

It's been unseasonably warm though - around 14C today, where it'd normally be closer to 4C this time of year.  Heck, 5 years ago the country was pretty much brought to a halt by continual snow back in November, but this year it's only snowed once or twice and half-heartedly at that.

I kinda miss the snow, but I generally enjoy the wind and rain.  Could stand to see a 5C or so drop in temperature though.

It's 2:06PM here and it's raining. Quite nice, actually.
It was spitting a bit earlier and the smell of rain was pretty strong, but now it's actually raining. It hasn't even been particularly hot lately, so that's odd... no doubt it will get extra warm after the rain stops, so that should be fun, too. ^-^

A Russian winter has finally arrived in St. Petersburg. The high on Friday is supposed to be about -21 C (-6 F), which, not coincidentally, is the day I fly to Portugal to go herd goats.

It's been disgustingly mild in the UK. And wet. Very wet.

I've been walking around London in the getup I wore in Poland in early September. And just next to Thames, I felt too hot in them.

Last winter I lived near the Canadian border in the US and it got really cold in the winter (-55 degrees F [about -48 C) windchill anyone?). Now I live in the American south and, despite it being January, I have yet to put on a coat. As of right now, it's POSITIVE 36.5 degrees F (2.5 C).

If you haven't put a coat on at 36F, you are not human. I'm wearing a flannel over ANOTHER flannel, and I'm inside with the heat on.

It was nearly 80F on Christmas Day (after two days of Noah-style flooding where the river rose 14 feet -- 4 more feet than back in October when I evacuated my kids), and right now it's mid-day and it's still below freezing. Mother Nature has some serious disassociative disorder going on.

Not much to report here. None of the flooding affected me, fortunately.

I still have a theory that Canadians are just wendigos posing in the skins of all the various settlers who froze to death. They send inviting videos of Vancouver and Montreal to lure their dinner to come visit.

I was thinking more along the lines of processed human blood. Y'know, from the humans that got replaced.

Naaah... from what I understand human blood (blood in general, really) doesn't take too well to preservation and whatnot. The processed blood would be used fairly quickly for... whatever reason. Presumably lubricant, given the previous supposition.

... also, I'm really, really wishing I hadn't had that thought, now that I've thought it. My happy place has turned bleak and frozen, and not in a good way.

Also, Canadians are insane. That is all.
/me shivers at the thought of 2.5 degree weather.
Title: Re: Weather Thread
Post by: Frumple on January 05, 2016, 11:56:05 pm
... 2.5C? That's... still above freezing. It'll be hitting that as a low here in Florida, today (34f, a bit below the 2.5 -- goddamn finally, though the lows'll be back up into the 50s by thursday, at least for a few days). Well, early tomorrow, whatever. Is around 5C (41F) now. Feels good. Feels very good. Heating vent to room is closed, door shut, things helping keep heat out. ~30 degree transition between my room and the rest of the house. Blankets are glorious :3

Now 2.5F, yeah, that's a bit more shiver-thought worthy. Good thirty or so below freezing. Not something I've had the fortune to experience, yet. One day!

The air ends up doing some interesting things when it gets really cold. The humidity drops to 0 at about 10 F but the water is still in the air so the air sparkles. It's not especially bright but it's noticeable if you look for it.

Also, at about 15 F, it gets annoying to breathe outside for a long time because of freezing nose hairs/mucus.

This is a thread for the discussion and appreciation of weather around the world.
And I see this just as things (as I see noted further down the thread) have calmed down around here.  Not that they were locally as bad as neighbouring areas.  A few threats of rain, tomorrow, but only threats.

The nearby river has gone back down by a couple of feet since Frank and its predecessors passed by (I'm not in a current or recent flood-zone, although it is still noticeably swollen from the weather that hit the hills, recently), and I don't anticipate it going back up again, at least not before the weekend.

Tomorrow's (now today's) top temperature is predicted to be around 145°De, with a night-time minimum closer to 147°De, in case anyone cares.  I'll let you do the conversion. ;)

You know... Delisle.  Water freezes at 150°De and boils at 83⅓°De, as you'd expect...  A perfectly cromulent scale!

(Sometimes just °D, though... Not as much confusion with the single letter as with Rankine, Rřmer and Réaumur, where only Rankine generally gets that particular privilege.)

North Carolina. Where forecasts of an inch of snow leads to mass runs on milk and bread.

A foot of snow would probably lead to pre-emptive cannibalism.

EDIT: My manager up in Washington DC said that they're calling for 50mph wind and 2.5-3' of snow. So yeah, I'm sticking by my predictions of White Walkers in Manhattan. Donald Trump shall reveal himself as the Night's King and rule from his frozen tower.

Our blizzard watch starts tomorrow at 6pm. The snow itself could start falling as early as 3pm, which is probably behind the decision to preemptively cancel school tomorrow. Things are gonna get pretty interesting, that's for sure.

Ours starts at 6PM Saturday, going to 1AM Sunday... Or was that 6AM Saturday - 1PM Sunday? I have no idea and neither do the local weathermen. Snow coverage is predicted to be as high as 21 inches and as low as some rain.

Minor WTF, but apparently Chrome accepts "weathermen" as a word.

Gale force winds and apparently a couple tornado touch downs already, here in florida, ha. Breezy weekend. No snow, obviously, as you northerners could tell by the lack of winged flying pigs, frozen hellfire blizzards, or notable uptick in demon tourism.

Part of me wonders how florida's going to deal with tornado shelters if this ends up being a thing alongside the hurricanes. Other places, you dig down, have basement and whatnot. Florida, you dig down, there's water. Among a few other concerns. Underground construction in general is a thing that happens to other states, ahaha...

About half a foot deep and showing no signs of stopping. Looking at TWC's Weather in Motion® shows the band where all this snow will turn into heavy rain, in a very slow moving band. And by the time it reaches me, it'll be nighttime enough for it to be snow again.

As a contrast to how nice it was... wait, I guess Melbourne weather is always a bit crazy.
Whatever, this morning is rather cold, windy and unpleasant. I left the house to go get some breakfast from the supermarket, then decided to turn back and re-equip before I'd even made it off my street (which ends about 50 metres from my front door).
Amusingly enough this is after I took off a jumper and replaced it with just a singlet and t-shirt, thinking the jumper would possibly be too warm (this was before I'd checked what it was like last night). Now I'm back and have put on another longsleeve shirt, a different one that I'd kinda forgotten I had.

...Oh, and all this is under a jacket. Um.
I was gonna say something else I think but I'm tired and hungry so I'm gonna go get breakfast 'cause I don't remember what it was.

Was about to go outside to finish un-digging a hole, but decided against it since it is raining fairly heavily here.
I can't hear it from the room I'm staying in. From what I'm told it rains quite a lot here- this is on a mountain in Northern NSW.
Quite nice to look at, I suppose. Not exactly my preferred hole diggin/un-digging weather, though. I guess I'll take my work pants off, chuck on my tracksuit pants (or sweatpants, for you foreigners) and go back to lazing about instead.

Solution*: Leave the hole unundug.  When it's not raining, swim in it (or, at worst, use it as a mud wallow).

*Subject to your local geology and pedology, the current size and shape of the hole, the presence of electrical cables within or in the vicinity of the hole and also the possibilities of certain types of wildlife taking up habitation already (see also edaphology), which - for someone in Australia -  might well be the clincher...

It's sporadically hailing right now. Sometimes a big gust of wind maybe ~15-20 mph comes down with loads of pebble sized hail. During the lulls, it gets sunny, the hail melts, and there's a brief sprinkling of snow or rain.

EDIT: There was a snow storm for 10 minutes and by the time I was done washing the dishes, it was sunny and the snow was almost all gone. This is some weird weather.
I guess a low pressure system is passing by really quickly or something.

Apparently there is a "gale warning" for an area Southeast of here. It was feeling almost cyclonic for a moment earlier.

Was supposed to pick up my new car at 6:00pm today. We had Tornado Sirens at 4:30pm, torrential down pours, random acts of up to baseball-sized hail and jolly flash flooding pretty much up until 7:30. Flash flooding is ongoing, obviously.

Totally not the day to pick that up it seems. At least they had the sense already to put it in a garage bay when I'd called them to say I wasn't going to be picking it up as planned. Cause if I go pick it up tomorrow and there's new hail damage....we're gonna have to renegotiate all over again.

Had the first tornado in my memory in this town (like 20+ years) touch down about 2 miles from my mom's house. Gave my neighbor a ride to the auto parts store because she was about bike there in this shit. She quickly realized how bad of an idea that was when grape-sized hail started pelting my car while she was inside and while we were driving back.

You want some of our sun? I don't know how to export sunshine in anything but concentrated format (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermonuclear_weapon) unfortunately, so exporting it is probably a war crime, or at the very least treason?

Goddamn is it hot today. I wasn't so much as walking as swimming in my own sweat. I'm glad I had the foresight to bring a bottle of water with me that I had frozen overnight, or else I'd have had a really big problem. Even then, I was sweating faster than it was melting.

The last few days here have been unusually warm this would make a nice change from the frequent rain if it still wasn't extremely humid. There is so much water in the air sweat doesn't evaporate it just sits there covering you. I'm beginning to miss the rain.

Sorry for the triple-post, but it is WAY TOO HOT to be bothered trawling the forums to find the slightly-more-recent Weather thread when I could just look in my created topics and find this one right away instead.

Did I mention it is REALLY HOT? Because it is. I mean, I like the heat so it's not so bad, but damn I am sweating a lot.
Good-bye, electrolytes.

Edit: Huh, apparently it's only 29 degrees! It's humid as heck, though, to make up for it.

According to Google, it's still 23 degrees here as the time nears midnight, but the humidity is ninety percent.
I'm not entirely sure what that means, but I think I can believe it given how warm it still is at this hour.

Uh, I think this is due to the ENSO cycle flipping negative if anything, and the warmth spurt washed up from the gulf, this has nothing to do with climate change. Just drunk weather.

This popped up in my head (besides missing RedKing's thread) but I was also wondering if this was just a "if weird winter weather==polar vortex!" type of reaction or what. The polar vortex is just a name for the low pressure systems at the poles, weaker or distrupted behavior of this system can lead to "drips" of cool air down across the middle latitudes which lead to the initial "IT'S THE POLAR VORTEX STRIKING BACK" type of stories over the last few years, but from what I can find there are no stories linking this blob of warm air to the polar vortex, or even really discussing it.

Cold blasts of air from up north have happened off and on long before anyone thought to call it global warming, but warm spells from the south being attributed to the polar vortex? That's new for me.

It did make me curious about what the pressure looked like up there, so here's a montage of our "New Normal" if anyone's interested:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I thought it was pretty interesting watching it progress along as it did/should, and you can see the big low pressure system over the north pacific which was disrupting the polar low pressure system before the one carrying the blob of warm air across me swung up around there with it.

I just wanted to say that it is not snowing here. It is not even threatening to snow here, on the forecasts. I decided to point this out as there are various warnings (and already apparently some instances) of heavy snowfall across the country, but it's not happening here, so it must be notable that it is not for me.

(It has also only been a bit breezy, no violent winds. That was another thing. This may change, but looks as unlikely.)

Right now we're havin' a cyclone!
Or, well, the very outer reaches of one. Which basically just means a super-windy rainstorm.
It's pretty intense, though! Plus, it should last longer than most of these storms, which start off strong then fade away quickly, lacking any real staying power. It started raining steadily-but-heavily last night, and just a little while ago (it's 6:34 AM) it got really heavy. I noticed the inside cat's worried behaviour, and then it occurred to me that my/my mother's other cat was probably still outside and I became somewhat concerned for his wellfare.

I was just looking out the back window, considering opening it up to call the cat, when I was distracted by multiple noises and occurrences and then suddenly in runs the dog off the front verandah. The door hasn't been closing properly since last night for some reason, so when this storm scared the crap out of her she just barged straight in to seek comfort. Very cute.

So I carried her around for a while, and paid a visit to the other outside cat, who she lives with on the front verandah. He was quite calm, not seeming very worried by the whole thing. When I eventually did go downstairs to look for outside cat #1 (his name is Cassius, for simplicity's sake) it occurred to me that he probably wasn't in any trouble, given that he had plenty of dry, presumably comfortable hiding places under the house. I wandered around, half-heartedly calling but not really expecting to find him, when there he was, standing at the bottom of the stairs staring at me, looking as frightened as I can remember ever seeing him (which isn't saying much, as he's normally pretty much fearless). The first time I tried to escort him upstairs he bolted (back) under the car when the door made a loud noise. I managed to coax him out from there and pick him up.

Once I finally had him upstairs he just shrugged it off, beelined for his favourite chair and resumed business as usual as far as I could tell.
The storm has calmed down a bit now, but hopefully it sticks around. I'll probably sleep and then see what's up.
Oh, and I went out to check the mail as an excuse to be out in it. That was fun. :D

I grew up in Texas and the in-laws act like I'm pulling a Radar O'Reilly when I pop up and tell them the sirens started before they even begin to hear them. Your ears learn to pick out that first rrrrrnnnnnn tone quick!

Though for years they wondered why I'd get super attentive about certain storm systems, and even thought I was being a little silly at first when I had them get shit set up and ready to hop into the tub a few years back because the radar was freaking me the fuck out. Then later we find out I was flipping my shit over the edge of the 2011 Super Outbreak (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Super_Outbreak) just barely clipping us near Germantown. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Super_Outbreak#/media/File:April_27,_2011_severe_weather_warnings.JPG) They don't question when I say to watch a storm system now, for some reason.

Coming off an ENSO spike I'm prepared for a bunch of weird bullshit weather this summer but hoping it'll be nice and bland like it has been for a couple years, unlike 2008 (http://www.spc.noaa.gov/wcm/annualtornadomaps/2008.png) and 2011 (http://www.spc.noaa.gov/wcm/annualtornadomaps/2011.png) which can go fuck themselves.

The sun and 80 degree weather is reminding to put on sunscreen in the near future, not today but maybe when it's closer to summertime. I don't remember ever getting sunburned during a run, or in general, but idea of getting too much solar radiation kind of scares me.

We got spring in late january (8 days over 20 C) and february (14 days over 20 C!) this year after a burst of it in december (3 days over 20 C), then we got a big chunk of that winter dropped in the first half of march (20 days at or below 10 C, half of those went under 5 C): https://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KMEM/2017/3/11/CustomHistory.html?dayend=16&monthend=3&yearend=2017&req_city=&req_state=&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=&reqdb.magic=&reqdb.wmo= and we've dipped down to or below 10 C 4 times this month.

It was a really weird combination of a decaying ENSO, the lifting of the upper atmosphere wave pattern responsible for the Cali drought, and the arctic having no fucking clue what it wanted to do for longer than a couple of days, with the usual rotation of the gyre reversing for a while. I was kinda expecting a harsh winter until the north pole went all derpy and backwards and everything got strange.

It raining!
Kicked up all of a sudden a little while ago without warning, looked almost cyclonic out there for a while. Then it started pouring steadily with rain, and after a little break it is now back again.

Exhilarating. Did a couple of little runs out to the mailbox and back, getting nice and wet. It occurs to be that this pleasant rain will seem rather less entertaining if it is still going when I plan on heading out later... oh well, I'll live.
It's only a nice summery storm. :)

Although I should probably pick up a new ventolin inhaler to replace the one I lost last night, just in case this weird "thunderstorm asthma" phenomenon decides to kick in...

(The only reason there is no snow on the ground, from a couple of days ago, is that the rain has washed it all away. But it's only slightly precipitous (and currently not at all precipitatious) because it's only about a week before the sun starts coming back, after all!)

I thought I was seeing archived news somehow poked back into view by some form of mass reader interest, but it seems that Saddleworth Moor fire: Crews tackle huge blaze (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-47381119) and Firefighters tackle Arthur's Seat blaze (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-47379622) mean this this strange winter weather (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47374936) is at least complicit in such unseasonal emergencies.

(An hour or two ago I came home back across the fields and scrubland, well past sunset. I could feel 'blasts' of warm air as I passed between small trees that were obviously stilling the air between them. On a cold morning they'd produce a fog-trap, but after a warm day like this they were obviously holding still air being warmed by the ground and being held stable under a mini-inversion. Like you can sometimes feel which individual cars in a car-park have just arrived, compared to those there for a while, by the residual radiating heat coming off their bonnets(/hoods). Anyway, I was passing through distinctly warm spots, compared to the 'ordinary' night-time air (still 'shirt sleeves' pleasant!). Tangibly intruiging.)
