Title: Dungeon Crawl 0.18 tourney! Tourney is finished! Hooray Bay 12

Well let me start off by saying I know just about nothing when it comes to crawl tourneys.  But since there's no topic yet, I figured I'd try to get the ball rolling.

Each release of crawl comes with a two weeks long tournament and the 0.18 tournament is coming. Bay12 has been participating (with good success) in previous tournaments. The tournament plays online on any of the servers and score is kept individually and for teams.

Just shamelessly rip off the format of the last tournament thread. That's what we've been doing since something like the 0.13 tourney.

I'm joining! Long-time newb, but I've gotten better over the last few months.

I've got a question - if I have an existing game on a server, does getting a rune/winning the game/doing whatever get me points? Obviously previous behavior (like getting a rune before the tourney starts) won't grant me points, but will getting a rune on Saturday in a game I started yesterday do that?

I'd be interested in joining a team - I haven't won since 0.12.1, but I am able to fairly regularly get a rune - I suppose that would put me somewhere between Expert and Advanced.

I'll captain the Advanced team. Unless you feel like swapping up the theme, Damiac, I'll stick with calling it the Blacksmiths. It's basically tradition at this point.

I'll hop back in for this tourney (I think i was one of the original bay12 champions back in 2010), I can generally pull off a 3-5 rune win when I need to.

I updated the rosters for who we have so far.  Teams are looking a little slim, hopefully we get some sign ups soon, otherwise we're all going to have to be champions.

Xgamer4 and Vactor, are those your crawl names as well?
Vactor, want to be captain of the champions this time around?

OK... since you seem to know what you're doing to some degree, can you quickly go over what needs to be done?

My understanding is that we need to insert a little header into our RC file with our team name and captain, and the captain needs to have the team name and the rest of the team members. Is that correct?

Alrighty, you're on the blacksmiths Alstar. Sorry for overlooking you... I looked up and down the thread a few times, apparently I've got a blind spot  :P

At some point we'll have to decide if we want to leave the teams with holes in them, or consolidate the players we have.  I guess we have a week after it starts to finalize our teams, but we probably should make a decision before the last minute.  I haven't done one of these before, do most people join before or after the start of the tourney around here?

I can take an expert spot unless someone more qualified comes along. I typically get one or 2 multi-rune win, but never got a full rune run yet.

I've once got two runes and close to the third with a Gargoule Fighter easymode character, but I haven't won once and wouldn't consider myself an expert. I'll join whichever team would take me.

IcyTea is my username on Crawl, i.e. same as here but without the number.

Sure thing.

The team captains need to add two lines to their rc file (I'm assuming you know how to do that and/or can figure it out - if not, let me know):

# TEAMMEMBERS player1 player2 player3 player4 player5

Substitute nameofteam for the team name and player1-5 for the names of the players. Save as the absolute top two lines in your file.

In my team's case, my rc file looks like:

# TEAMMEMBERS AlStar IcyTea

(note that teammember names are NOT case-specific)

Team members just need to add one line:

# TEAMCAPTAIN nameofcaptain

Sub nameofcaptain with the name of the team captain. So for members of the Blacksmiths, they'd put this as the absolute top line in their rc file:

# TEAMCAPTAIN Xgamer4

(same deal - names are NOT case-specific)

The tourney pages update every few hours (6?), so don't worry if you don't see the change immediately.

Also, while the tourney itself starts in 1 hour, team changes are available for up to a week into the tournament, and points scored go with the player. (Incidentally, this is usually why we generally don't merge teams - someone might come along later, and we generally don't play super competitively so having gaps in the teams doesn't hurt anyone.)

OK, I just feel bad for dozebom stuck all by himself.

Can you have a team with no other members? I guess it wouldn't really make much difference anyway...
Is it specifically team creation that can only be done in the first week, or is it the team roster that can't change?

Well yeah, with teams-of-one that's really up to the person whether they want to hold out for more members or jump to a team lacking someone. It's just not generally worth the hassle to merge half-filled teams, because then you've gotta coordinate everyone.

And yeah, for that week everything's available. Creating new teams, joining teams, leaving teams, etc.

I'm a little concerned that I'm not in the "All Players" list. I played a short warmup on CUE to make sure I have recorded plays, and I know it might take a few hours to update, but I hope I'll officially be in the tournament by the time I start racking up a few points.

There's always a small delay between the games and the stat record. It takes a while to process team changes too I think, but your score should follow even if the change is applied later.

...Yeah, no. I'd probably just ditch the magic entirely and play it like any other ogre.

Yeah most of the exotic combination are played exactly like that, start as some class then train as whatever is efficient. It's a good strategy to rack some points too, as rarer combination net you more tournament points.

And magic using ogre can actually be very viable.

Ogres are good at spellcasting(The spellcasting skill, that is), so that puts them in a good position to learn low level multi school spells almost as well as the more magical races.  This puts them in a decent position to do well at being a wizard. 

So for an AE, I'd probably train spellcasting and maybe a little air to get swiftness online, and probably stop there.  Swiftness is a decent spell to save your life sometimes.  The problem with just trying to play it as a normal ogre with a club is you won't start with a club, and you've got to kill the stuff that tries to kill you between now and club time.  Even then, you won't be as good at clubbing as an ogre who started that way.

Of course, you could always lean heavily on throwing, as you're likely to at least find some rocks to throw pretty quickly.  Throwing never stops being good, so it's not like it's wasted xp or anything.

I swear, I'm positive that there's some code in Crawl to mess with the player.

Like, make sure that corpses I can eat drop inversely to how hungry I am. Or generate magical weaponry of every type except what my character is using. Or generate several sets of barding - except when I'm actually playing as a Naga or Centaur.

I should not have to be eating rations in the Lair, is all I'm saying - and I shouldn't really still be using my starting +0 war axe there either.

I did find an arbalest by a shrine of Trog though, so that's rather fun. Pincushion all the things!

Could I join the Intermediate team? I've reached the Lair a few times now but I'm not hugely consistent. My Crawl name is ochandle, not Gamedragon.

I'm not seeing anyone else on the champions team, the blacksmiths members are showing. Is it possible something's wrong in your RC vactor?

I think the members just need to add their line, you're showing up on the team now Damiac, there is a slight delay before the server picks up on changes.

Won a game, 14.5mil, was going to do trove (needed 1 more agi potion) but had everything needed to win so just ended it

Well. Apparently Crystal Guardians do more damage with their melee attacks then their spell ones, at least with decent elemental resistances. Like, 2-3 times as much damage. I was not prepared for that much of a discrepancy. I think I got minimum AC roll too, but still. Major miscalculation. There goes my best game so far. Bleh.

they do, I also avoid elf 3 before lvl 25, its a scary place.

The game has decided that all uniques must come at me in twos: Hey look, it's not just Jory, it's Jory and Saint Roka.

Hey look - it's The Enchantress, queen of the Spriggans! Oh hey, and her bestie (apparently) Sojobo, king of the Tengu!
Ick. I'm not sure how I'm going to take the two of them out. And of course it's at the entrance of the Depths, so just the one stairs - can't just go down a different way and avoid them.

I'm really hurting for a source of rElec. I'm also getting really sick of this teleport me to enemies mutation I picked up from my very first potion, which, at level 18 now, still plagues me.

edit: Well, and I guess it doesn't matter - ran into a high-level ghost air-elementallist, of course. Confused me, then summoned up ball lightning while wailing away with a weapon of electricity.

Elf definitely seems harder in this version. I did it before entering any of the Lair sub-branches, and I was lucky to survive. Those elementalists can summon a ridiculous amount of earth elementals (I've had 12+ on screen at once from just two of the fuckers) which can annihilate your cover. It's such a pain in the arse - they talk about wanting to avoid luring, and then they make it even more necessary!

Also put Tegga on Champions, he's definitely one of our best players (your 0.15 tournament results were very impressive mate).

It's a shame Ultraviolent4 didn't sign up this time either; he hasn't posted here much, but he consistently kicks ass in the tournaments - but in the last two it's been for other teams! :P

I managed 4 or 5 wins in a row that tourney, I got to practice in bionic dues before the tournament though, that game always puts in me in roguelike zone.  This tourney I'm working 2 full time jobs, probably won't get many games in :(

The earth elementals weren't so bad. I was good enough at melee I could pulverize them. Dancing weapons were harder, but still possible to grind down one on one. The crystal guardians, though, were nastier. And I had no real idea of how hard they were because I'd only ever seen them in Zot before, when I could just crush them effortlessly. And I didn't have Bolt of Magma or Airstrike since I'd been using Bolt of Draining for fire resistant enemies.

EDIT:

Whatever. I'll probably try some DsFi's as a palette cleanser[Plus that's what got me my win last time]. Yreledumnel hasn't been played that much for some reason, so I'll probably go that route. Assaulting rune vaults with an army of undead is something I haven't done in a while. Probably because it lags everything pretty hard.

I'm up for this too.

Haven't clocked any wins recently, but that's mostly because I like aiming for full wins, even on characters that really haven't found the resistances for it. My style is much more of a "make enough attempts and something'll stick eventually" over "anything is possible".

Oh, Crawl - you so silly.

So I'm an ice draconian, who is looking to expand into magic. I've found two magic book shops. Anyone want to guess what school of magic is notably absent?

Plenty of fire spells available though...

I think Xom was trying to say something to me in my last game. Pretty much every warband of orcs I faced had a dagger of venom on one of them. I got an early =rPois so they weren't much of a problem, but usually weapons of venom are pretty rare for me.

yeah, not sure what the issue is, make sure its the rc file for 0.18, and that its the top line. when you open the file sometimes you have to scroll up to get to the top line.  Also I play on akrasiac.

I had a promising MuGl die in the depths, then a MiFi I was playing for an 'easy' win somehow die in snake with 39 ac and 10 ev.  I am not sure what went so wrong... the mummy had an easier time in snake than the MiGl, even though he had rPois.  It just seemed like the snakes were hitting my poor minotaur extra hard...

So far I got 2 runes, and a couple random banners.  I am not doing so well this tourney...

Blargh, just lost my 3rd char with 3+ runes.  The problem with playing these easymode characters is that you spend so much time mindlessly tabbing through enemies you start to get sloppy after a few hours.

I've now got 14 out of 15 runes and only need to do Dis and Zot:5. Hopefully I don't miscast Death's Door in the middle of a pack of iron giants this time. Skipped Cerebov[The portal took me literally right next to the rune] and Ereshkigal[Megaheal + silence make her the deadliest Hell Lord for casters].

Hi guys, its now something like 5 tourneys in a row where I have to say, I really don't have much time, but this time I really mean it. I have to finish my PhD thesis inside the next 7 days. However, I will tab some Axeorcs and some Lajataurs every now and then to clear my head, and would love to contribute any Lair runes I pick up whilst doing so to the Bay12 cause.

Been having a lot of 2-rune deaths of late, and haven't won for months, but nevermind.

Go to your server of choice (go here (http://crawl.develz.org/play.htm) if you're not sure which) and log in (register if you haven't already). Next to the button that says 'DCSS 0.18' is a button that says '(edit rc)'. Open the file and put "# TEAMCAPTAIN jwoodward48ss" as the very first line of it, without quotes. Click 'save' and start playing; the tournament site should update after a while.

Also, post your Crawl username if it isn't the same as here since the team captain, in this case Dozebôm Lolumzalìs, has to also edit their rc file.

I have a nice HoWr just about finished with the depths, next up is getting the rune from Vaults 5, then, if I survive, on to Zot.  Ugh... this character isn't quite tanky enough for me to feel confident stairdancing the vaults, so I guess I'll have to do it the 'right' way, namely running/teleporting around like an idiot until I can clear a little space to catch my breath.  I might actually get a win in this tourney...

As long as by running/teleporting around like an idiot you mean the following, then yeah. This is what my HOBe will be doing:

Buff up (!agility + !haste at least).
Go down, and immediately read a scroll of magic mapping.
Take a deep breath. Check out the map, looking for LOS blocking quadrant layouts, preferably ones which don't have dead ends.
Casually saunter (or possibly ?oBlink if necessary) to the most favorable terrain.
Tab to glory quietly.

That's the best bet. Of course, sometimes you get 4 quadrants with really shit open terrain, in which case yeah, you can run around like an idiot, or possibly just go do Abyss/Slime?

Hah, I guess that's the best case scenario.  Sometimes you get a quadrant with a good diagonal chokepoint, but even then this character can't go 1v1 against too many enemies in a row, so I suspect there's gonna be a bit of teleporting like an idiot.  I've got two wands and a number of scrolls, so I can do quite a bit of teleporting.

Luckily, I do have boots of running, as well as passage of golubria, so I'll be a fast moving idiot if nothing else.
I don't have any stealth, so I'd rather avoid abyss.
I do have rCorr, so slime is an option, but I think vault 5 is typically easier.

I'm getting totally sick of the Shoals. It's both more difficult and more annoying then the Swamp - not to mention I've managed to get the Shoals rune twice now, while I have yet to even see an entrance to the Swamp. And don't even get me started on Ilsuiw. Ugh.

I'm doing surprisingly well with this Troll Chaos Knight - I've picked up the gossamer rune, and I've gotten a whole host of useful mutations from Xom. Xom's been surprisingly mellow too - aside from turning an emperor scorpion into a dire elephant, occasionally confusing me near deep water/lava, and teleporting me into the middle of a dozen great sling-wielding fauns, he's barely tried to kill me at all.

Confusion near deep water/lava is no longer deadly to the player, you can't stumble into it and die anymore.
Of course, the usual confusion dangers still apply.

If you don't have rPois, you're going to have a bad time. If you don't have a decent way to kill things from a distance, you're going to have a bad time. If you don't have SeeInvis on the bottom level, you're going to have a bad time.

Overall, I still like it more than Snake, however.

The Shoals, IMO, are one of the more persuasive reasons to go Gargoyle. Unbreathing + flight lets you shrug off lots of the more annoying aspects and extra AC never really goes amiss. Combined with the fact that poison immunity makes Snake/Spider fairly trivial, and Gargoyles are really freaking good for that alone.

Gargoyle is amazing, just need to survive early game and watch out for elemental damage/SMITING and get HP up asap.  Its worth it to shift-x, ctrl F repeat levels (burning food) to get that extra level or two of xp

Hooray, I got a win!

My vaults 5 entrance was a hilarious comedy of errors.  I fast traveled to vault 4, went and got a glass of water, then went on autopilot and took the stairs down without buffing up.  Suddenly I realized I had screwed up, but oh well, I quaffed a haste potion and started walking down a corridor.  Well I pretty quickly ended up totally surrounded, so it was teleport like an idiot time!  Luckily the first teleport landed me in a quadrant with a good layout for picking enemies off, and it wasn't too crowded. It also had the rune!

After clearing that quadrant I was about to move on to the next one, when suddenly I see Mennas!  Well, I wasn't about to lose this close to the finish line, so I did my best Sir Robin impression and passage of golubria'd my way to the stairs and got the hell out of there.  I left 3/4 of the vault treasure behind, but that's a fair price for not dying.

I guess due to a lack of enchant armor scrolls I felt much squishier than a melee orc character should, my victory involved a lot of bravely running away.  Boots of running and passage of golubria really helped my running away skills though. 

In zot I killed 9 OOFs, which is... a lot.  I was able to kill 3 or 4 with portal projectiles from behind something not as scary in several cases, but the rest just got beat up with an axe.  I used finesse a lot more than I usually do.  Managed to get some nasty muts, including teleportitis that fired off in zot, sending me into a (luckily mostly cleared) lung. 

The orb run was mostly OK, until the very end where this happened:

Nice, I should learn to use passage of Golubria more, I've been passing it up since I never used it before.

Anyone ever tried to repel deathcobs with one of those teleporting amulets? I'd like that as a last resort if one of them manage to get in melee range.

I was just thinking about that. Amulets of dismissal are annoying as hell normally, but sometimes you really wish the thing hitting you would go away, so it might be a decent option to swap it in.  I don't know exactly what the vertigo effect it causes on equip actually does though...

Passage of golubria is incredible, albeit a bit imprecise.  You target a square with it, and a portal spawns within 0-2 tiles of you, and 0-2 tiles of your targeted square.  Going into a portal makes that portal disappear, but the destination portal stays.  If there are more than 2 portals open, you get taken to a random one.

I used it as a way to gain distance on enemies, it's like a multi turn controlled blink.  You can also use it to teleport enemies around, although it can also teleport enemies closer to you, so it's a bit dangerous there.

Meanwhile, oh my god, the enchantress is damned annoying for melee dudes with her cute little quickblade of distortion, her missile almost immunity, her evasion, her entourage, her damned forest full of druids, etc. Almost died first time she tele'd me right into her fortress where i was instantly surrounded by air mages, defenders, and beserkers, and actually killing her took way more consumables than I am happy with.

Still, my bardiche of venom, my Hero, and my bloody minded clearing of the entire level before I took her on again, eventually won the day.

My mino has temporarily downgraded from plate to faerie armour, and learnt spectral weapon, will see if this was a good idea or not... I have the moon troll armour someplace too, maybe I should try it instead, it must be better than the faerie actually... Hmm.

Death cobs just slow you now, instead of starving you to death. Still nasty if there's an OOF or something nearby to capitalize on that, but no longer absurd deadliness.

I lost like two melee bruisers in trunk to DeathCobs, back when they were crazy starvation death machines. Good times. They have not very good MR, so you might be able to confuse them with a wand or spell, if you don't fancy being slowed.

My MiGl is as ready for its 3rd rune it will ever be. I really wanted to find portal projection, but no. Guess I should have started as a MiWr. But of course, I wouldn't have survived long enough as a Wr. Stupid awesome Gl nets.

Throwing nets are the most ridiculously good things in the game. They work on anything from D:2 Sigmund to uppity hell lords. They're like antimagic + paralysis in one delicious package.

Mara! Stupid awesome Gl nets completely destroy Mara. Ancient lichs in Zot, completely embarrassed by humble fishing equipment. And if you get Shoals, mobs  be all like "Hey, good afternoon fine Sir, you look sad, here catch this!". Its like, if you were playing Doom, and instead of the Imps shooting fire balls at you, they just handed you rocket launchers. Crazy.

I'd forgotten how annoying it is to not be able to heal normally (as a deep dwarf.) I was using Elyvilon to keep my health topped off, which was working great up through Shoals:4 (Shoals - again! Why?!) followed by working my way through Spider and getting stuck with a very annoying Spider:4. Now I've managed to burn my piety down from 4* to 0*, and I'm all out of easy dungeon to explore. I fear running out of MP; burning it all to recharge my wand of healing.

The real question is if it's worth incurring Elyvilon's wrath to switch to either Makhleb (for health on kill) or to Pakellas (for wand recharging that doesn't take permanent MP.)

yeah but your min delay on your bardiche (or scythe of curses), executioners axe or triple crossbow kicks in at 26, so there is no real pressing need to have Okie lift you up to 27... 26 is fine.

/edit: and raising your dodging/armour skills from 21 to 22 is probably not worth it compared to getting Evo up for your Invis ring, or bringing blink/sputterflies online.

Arf Xom is not with me for this tournament. I lost 2 good run to pretty bad random teleports, like I teleported 3 times in the elven animated weapon room as a caster. Not much I could do... It all started with a 1% chance miscast too. I'll run some Xom chaos knights to reset my luck heh.

Gonna dissent a little here.  Go for 22 and let heroism carry you to cap.  Your point on mindelay is well-founded, but by the time you get that far you are lategame and facing a lot of Drain.  If you only took 21 and get at all drained you lose your mindelay.  A little buffer lets you go rN++ without immediately bombing out in performance if the drain happens.

In general you are right about diminishing returns though, skills past 20 need to be absolutely core skills.

We are in basic agreement: I agree you want your skill above 21 *eventually*, but its the first rune level difficulty jump where Okie's climb to 26 really shines. My skilling is generally pretty crappy, but my MiGl is a nice example of my point:

Of course, every game is different, but in this game, around this time, the Stormbow was found at the bottom of Lair, (and I was able to buy manual of Fighting in Orc, which skewed my fighting training a bit).

The point is, Okie allowed me, even as early as Orc, to stop throwing XP into my bardiche and start developing a ranged attack.

I suppose in my original response to Covenant I could have said

Draining can certainly be an issue - shame its not reflected in the log, but a couple of demon foo of draining spriggan defenders really did a number on me at one point: Like, I was clearing U3, and my polearms skill was drained from 21 all the way to like 10, fighting was something like 12, all other skills way down... no more casting of regen. I have never seen the word Drain so deeply red before. It was kinda scary, but of course, by that time I had a longbow of speed, and was still with Okie, so I was able to recover.

Finally: you can see in the logs above, that I smashed mobs in the face with my longbow on a total of 6 occasions. I think its worth noting that although 2 of those were I think basically typos, 4 of those were used to kill a moth of wrath in Zot who beserked me. I had no idea what to do, and was unsure if it would work, but beserk-sauntering up to the moth and beserk-bashing its little face in with my bow turned out to be very effective :)

Well, got a puny five-runer. Combination of semi-crippling mutations with only one cure mut potion and a dearth of rNeg[One randart amulet and a ring of positive energy were all that spawned] deincentivized doing Extended pretty heavily. Whatever, there's still a week left in the tournament to do better then that. Still feel like the RNG screwed me over pretty badly this game. I found troves and rune vaults full of absolute garbage. Which isn't uncommon. But what wasn't absolute garbage was still mediocre. Bleh.

Yeah pretty average gear except your amazing shield, congrats.

Doing good in my revenge chaos knight game. I'll try for 15 runes tomorrow with Xom all the way, should be entertaining. He's been surprisingly helpful so far.

It really depends on what you are playing, but you should read the article on Lair on the wiki, and read it carefully. There are a lot of things that are dangerous and some thing you should probably avoid altogether (hydras, maybe black mambas & spinny frogs, uniques etc).

And how do you post that character file?
You can press # to dump your character file and show it to us (gives you a link in the message bar).

Be carefull, keep training your offensive capabilities until you can tackle things like packs of yaks with ease (using choke points if needed), and then train some defense by the end of Lair.

Treat everything new as if it was going to kill you, because it will. The wiki is your friend.

I'll agree that the wiki is good to read. A few important other things:

Hydras are deadly. Make sure you have a nonbladed weapon or a flaming bladed weapon, otherwise you'll start fighting a 5-headed hydra and die to a 15-headed one. Or you could just avoid them if you're stealthy.
Ignore all the Lair branches (shoals, swamp, etc) for now because they are way harder.
There tend to be volcano and ice cave entrances, so you might want to bring some resistances to get the treasure in them.
If it looks like a sheep, mouse over it before fighting it to make sure that is is a sheep. Death yaks are not a joke.
And of course, bring rPois because there are lots of poisonous monsters.

I am sporadically online and remembering bits and pieces through every death along the lines of 'OH I remember this, I used to do {strategy} before an- Oh I died ._. Well let's learn again.' since I was able to get the Orb and get out a lot of versions ago.
Noticing several differences...hooray for changing cutlets and meat into something different from 'edible, poisonous, :I, mutative'.
And many other things \o/

And yep, got the wiki for remembrance, and for some reason my IP is listed because of things NOT coming from me ._. Currently I'm able to access it but unsure why it got listed, and then whitelisted, and then blacklisted, and then whitelisted, in the first place.

EDIT: Of course, right after I complain I find a volcano, where the Steam Dragon armor became very helpful. Situationally useful is still useful, I guess.

EDIT EDIT: It's all coming up. After that complaint, Oka gifted me a +1 Plate Armor with rPois. Not great, but it's what I needed to start tackling my branches. I dipped my toes into Spider's Nest after that and managed to find a ring of see invis on Spider 1, so I just managed to skirt the ideal to tackle the branch.

Drop to Spider 2 and find this little thing:

I think we should just replace Oka with Xom. He keeps giving me shadow dragon armor (err.... thanks?) and incredible daggers. And once a quicksilver dragon armor, which would've been pretty cool, if I wasn't already rocking MR+(9) because that's all the resistances I ever got that run...

Also also, did you never find another demon whip sans *Corrode sans *Confuse to enchant up?

/Not that I can talk, my DDEE is currently wearing a *confuse SInv helmet. Triggered twice so far.

How do people playing DCSS talk with each other or spectate each other, other than knowing the other person's server and such. Isn't it hard to be online on the same server as the other person playing? :-X

Still confused how to get my character dump into copy pasty text :-[ because I'm finally kicking into action and washing away my 'CHARGE EVERYTHING'-itis!
Also remembered my most commonly found and disliked brand. Electrocution! Glad I have a greatsword of such in my possession now. Turning the tables :3

I lost a very promising FoAk in a very stupid way. I escaped a bad flayed ghost situation in the depths, but a storm dragon followed me up the stairs, and I figured I was safe to just walk away at 25 hp.  Well the lightning breath the dragon shot at me did 27 damage, so that was the end of that.  That loss was extremely demoralizing, and all I've done since is play weird combos with low high scores to try to at least accomplish something, but most of those combos are really terrible (There's a reason they have low high scores).  I only have 2 wins this tourney, so hopefully I can snap out of my DCSS funk.  Losing a character in the depths just sucks though... at that point I really should have won.

MR(+9) isn't a thing, it was probably MP +9.  MR would show up as MR+ or MR++ or something like that.  Not that it sounds terribly relevant at this point.

There are some scripted entrances. This one is relatively new, I think. Orc was revamped since .17 to shorten it.

It's a similar situation to Lair; there's one Lair:8 with an entrance to Hell and a few medium-strength demons outside of it.

anyway I ended up winning that game with 4 runes because I couldn't be bothered to do Hell/Pan/Tomb. They've made some hilarious chances to Zot:5, too.

In the rest period between my final exam, and I've been doing DCSS ._.;
There's a ton of changes I've not expected (Orc Mines are so short...), but I'm pretty happy that I'm getting a good streak of pretty much many things--mutagenic pieces of meat are still the same as I remember, but I'm leaning on the positives.
Will try to aim for a win, despite not remembering anything past 0.7. .-.

E: I've been consuming Sky Beasts...and now I'm stuck with an array of GOOD MUTATIONS alone (since the only bad one got cancelled out :D). Now stuck with a stack of 4 more meats, I am very reluctant to continue, but I also want to continue. :I
They still DO have the Potion of beneficial mutation right? I only got one cure mutation, and am currently floundering between Elven Halls (going to the 2nd floor), going further in the Lair (going to 3), or traversing the depths (currently at dungeon 12).

! of Beneficial mutation are pretty rare - pretty sure you can do a standard 3-runer and never see one, but sometimes you find a stack of 3 on D5 and party. !of Cure mutation have been made more common due to the amulet of resist mutation getting the axe.

I don't understand your Branch order  - did you mean one of the Lair sub-branches? Swamp, Snake and Spider are all going to be safer than Elven Halls 2 for most dudes. Elf 2 can have some pretty aggressive hellfire users, as well as horrible stuff like distortion dancing quick blades. Whereas Lair 3 might have some river rats and the occasional Black mamba?

If you haven't cleared Lair, you should also be wary of heading all the way down to D15 - the Vaults and Depths stair vaults can sometimes be pretty nasty.

I feel like the game's difficulty spike has moved from around the lair until after a couple runes, and I think it might be due to the change in Orc(less xp available maybe).  I'm not sure, i just feel like in the past if you got one rune, you had a darn good chance of winning, and this tournament i've lost plenty of chars that had a few runes.

I agree that the midgame is harder now, especially for casters. They just don't have the mana pool or the right spells(unless lucky) to deal with some of the stuff you are likely to encounter.

The XP budget is certainly tighter now - I usually feel a bit underdeveloped when entering my first Lair branch, and then again upon entering Depths for the first time. It feels like I have a lot of late game deaths at the top or bottom of the staircase down to U1 - those entry vaults... ouch. From that standpoint, the levels they trimmed from the Lair sub-branches are a lot more significant than the changes to Orc, which was never very XP rich to begin with.

My current dudebro, a CeHu of Okie, doesn't have any sInv, which makes the Spider rune level a bit dodgy. Still, I just opened the game up, and I am in Shoals instead. Why the fuck am I in Shoals? I really need sleep apparently. Better to do Spider without sInv and tele-park the ghost moths if I have to, than saunter around Shoals with just MR++ and no evasion. Seriously, I hate Shoals - water nymphs that can disable the stairs you're freaking standing on, demon trident of disto wielding scaly fish folk, fucking sirens and satyrs lol can't run from me lol can't walk towards me gaaa.

While I'm comparing from 0.7, I've never felt this underleveled before ._. I've finished all branches but the Tomb, Pan, Hell, and Zot 5 and I have no skill up to 27.
...That or I spread myself out too much >_>
Good news is that I've until Sunday to finish my game and I believe it may be going swell :D If I can ask aid on my latest character (http://dobrazupa.org/tournament/0.18/players/tiruin.html), it would be dearly appreciated since I'm pondering on ever facing Zot5 and finishing the game OR using Zin and facing Hell (Or TSO @Abyss, but I'm unsure on my rMut because I have nothing that even gives me this >_>). 4 runes and I feel underpowered ._.
...And maybe this is just me being silly with mutations because I got the 2nd tier of genetic drift, which I read up is a good 75% beneficial mutation thing!
Happy to also add that nothing I have can face balls of fire--other than a greatsword of cold that I had to rebrand to.

And we've got another death to that fucking hellion vault. I keep forgetting they're fast, so they get more then one Damnation per turn if you engage for long enough. Not that I'd probably have lasted long afterwards, honestly. A bardiche does NOT do enough damage quickly enough to justify the death from a thousand cuts that lacking a shield inflicts on you, even with Haste. Since there's only like two days left, its probably time to start breaking out the MiFis and going full ham to try and score one last win. Screw trying to have an interesting character, I want to bash in heads and win games, dammit.

Zin gives 100% rMut at max piety. You should at least be able to do Abyss just fine, although I'm not sure how Zin stands up to Pan.

Last time I did that vault I used passage of golubria to break them up as melee, casting it in a free spot and waiting for them to enter it and killing them one by one. Takes some time but it's perfectly safe. I'm now taking that spell on every class when I can, it's really useful in many situations.

So most of the dangerous stuff (like for instance, that lovely Hellfire) bypasses shields completely, and even for stuff shields do block, they are only really effective like, once per turn, so its not like they are helping you much if you get surrounded by melee bruisers either???

I mean sure, my casters wear bucklers, but my melee dudes? Will a shield really improve my melee dudes survivability?

  • Other ranged attacks that are not beams: Shatter, Tornado, Airstrike, Smite, Ozocubu's Refrigeration.

So most of the dangerous stuff (like for instance, that lovely Hellfire) bypasses shields completely, and even for stuff shields do block, they are only really effective like, once per turn, so its not like they are helping you much if you get surrounded by melee bruisers either???

The problem I was having was in long drawn out fights that bled my mediocre merfolk hp bit by bit with hits that snuck through my EV until I had to burn absurd amounts of consumables to survive. This is a situation that I ran into a lot less with my traditional sword and boarders. It wasn't so much in Extended as it was in Depths and Zot and such, which left me with far less consumables then I was used to and thus made me doubt my ability to survive Extended with less resources.

That said, I do still maintain that Eveningstar + shield > Great mace. There's no way two points of extra base damage are worth taking more damage. Long blades are iffier, but I'd say the advantage is still with sword and board. And UC w/shield is almost exactly the same in damage output as UC without shield. It definitely does not work that way with polearms, since a Bardiche does six more points of base damage then the useless demon trident and axes have almost as big a gap between their best one-handed and best two-handed.

Really bothered that I can't think of a branch that doesn't Malmutate ._. (in my context: only Hells, Pan, Tomb, Zot:5, and the Abyss are still open to me. I hilariously cut off the only Ziggurat portal at...level 9, not knowing that there's a banner at LEVEL 10. :I)
I just really want to also ride out this nice RAPID EVOLUTION mutation I picked up too, but from shifting to TSO from Zin (from TSO).

Also in 0.18, it doesn't seem like the piety is cut in half when you shift between good gods?

Given my experiences with a reflection amulet unique (unsure if shields have the reflect brand now), my shield can reflect AND block bolt spells (how many times I've had the calming humor of seeing several bolts being reflected back to their owners...), but it can't reflect any of the rest or block them.

Although given the high # of blocks I see in my own sheet (thanks Jiharo), I probably am not counting as I BET I've blocked (and then reflected) other ranged attacks and wand zaps too ._. Unless I'm misreading 'extended'.
And yes, shields improve survivability by a long-shot, especially in open-areas where the enemies can hit you; you'll either need good resistances or ways of escaping rather than a shield.
Shields didn't help me vs. torment and other annoying HP bar crushers.

Though I may be biased since the last game I did play was back in 0.7.

There's also the warlock's mirror, a buckler that can reflect intangibles, like hexes too. I managed to reflect a cateboleas breath once, with it. Was fun. And I have no idea how to spell that, offhand, and tabs on my phone are awful. -_-

If you can even block anything with a buckler...

Don't know if I've got enough time to actually win with this guy - even if he doesn't meet his end at 2 runes (again) - but at least I finally got the Swamp rune - only took 3 4 Shoal runes.

Edit: Ooh, first Silver rune of the tournament too. Only an hour left to go though...

Edit^2: That's 3 runes... less than 30 mins left...

Edit^3: Zot:1, but it's now 4:02 PM. Ah well, I'll see if I can win this later.

Yeah I rushed my CeHu a bit, so he died. Still, 2 wins and 3 more dudes who died with 2 runes is not too bad a tourney for me, considering the sleep deprivation and time constraints. Now I have just a week left to finish my doctorate ???.

Congrats everyone who managed to bring Orbs home - looks like the Champions will stay in the top 20 clans again, nice work.

Thankfully, there wasn't any penalty for number of games. I single-handedly accounted for 44% of the games played, and a disproportionately low number of wins. ._.

At least killing my own ghost over and over was somewhat useful, though.

Edit: And MiFi and MiBe account for about 20% of wins, each, respectively. And how on earth is the 15th shortest-number-of-turns also a 15-rune win?!

Resting is the turn killer, i'm guessing a lucky/well built char that rarely had to press 5.  (can formicids shaft their way through the hells?)  Maybe they found tons of EXP potions.

It was a lot of fun participating in the tourney, although I did get really disheartened when I lost a really great FoAk due to stupidity.  I noticed that after stupid deaths with promising characters, I'd just go on tilt with a bunch of crappy characters, then stop playing for a bit. 

Still, I'm happy with how we did, bay 12 champions were #19, we had six combo high scores, we killed every unique except murray and ignacio (I've seen murray 2 or 3 times, and ignacio exactly once during my entire crawl career). 

I know I was a terrible organizer, so hopefully someone a little more... organized will want to run it next time, but I'm glad we got everyone onto a team who wanted to be on one.  Nice job to everyone who participated!
