Title: Which adv mode professions would you like to see first?
Post by: Ekaton on June 26, 2016, 01:49:16 am
Seeing that rather obscure professions like a lawyer or a tavern owner are so oftenly proposed, I want to create a poll. Choose those professions that you would like to see in Df first - you can choose up to 3 of those.

If I missed any, mention it in your post and I'll add it if possible.

Took me a bit to realize that "adv" is short for "adventure" and not "advanced".

I'm not completely understanding this. What would adding a "thief" profession to adventure mode change? I'm pretty sure you can already steel things and get punished for thievery in adventure mode. I've only played adventure mode once, so maybe there's something I'm not understanding.

Wandering lawperson for a civ, bandit leader, shopkeeper.

The three elements

There are already some adventure roles planned - thief will be in one of the next releases - http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html

It's really tough to choose. I definitely want Farming. Engineering would be fun – that means making traps and drawbridges, right? Then I'd probably take Doctor for my third. It's fun to help people.

The plan is not to restrict players but to give the world enough variety that the player can play as any role he likes realistically. Pursuit, capture and imprisonment for stealing stuff, either side of which the player could be involved with. Merchant robbing, guarding and hiriing of guards to allow you to play the role of a guard, bandit or merchant. dances and poetry competitions at festivals for the bards/hirers of bards/enslavers of bards. Building for tavern keepers, farmers, priests, pilgrims etc.

I'd imagine a bard who's not very good could join a bandit group to top up his cash and run away with a merchant caravan after seducing the warlords wife. Working as a guard before getting a reputation as a dragon slayer after accidentally killing one as it feasted on the merchants.

At the current version, there's a lot of unpunished overlooked thievery in the game : walk in a castle or a mead hall take all the weapons and armors you want while being directly in the guards/lords line of sight, and walk away without a single problem.

Tavern Owner sounds interesting. I guess it'd be sort of like a Maxis SimTavern game – Get a loan, build a tavern, hire employees, maybe purchase some nice furniture from your dwarf fortress. Something like that? Maybe you could also grow your own plump helmets and pigtails etc in the basement and brew your own beverages.

Yeah, that would be great. Also, to serve beverages yourself, learn lates gossips and news and spread them, rent rooms, maybe hire some wandering mercenaries to guard your tavern. I think that it is one of the best professions we can get, I always loved roleplaying tavern owners in D&D and Warhammer. So much immersion. Taverns are like THE MOST important place in any fantasy world. Would be really cool to own one.

In medieval/renaissance times and in some fantasy settings those are judges who travel from village to village, delivering justice in the name of the ruler. That's because local police forces such as militia have to stay and protect the village, not leave it uprotected when they escort a criminal to the nearest castle/town, and also because travelling can be too dangerous for unprepared villagers, and better done by lawmen who are escorted by soldiers.

In civs where only king is allowed to deliver justice, the lords can't pass sentences themselves, and have to rely on lawmen and judges who deliver it in the name of the king. Otherwise, they can be hired by a local nobleman who would instruct them about local laws and punishments for different crimes.

Do you have any specific profession in mind? With the farmer option I'd say you can be a cowboy, if that's on your mind. ;)

Reminds me of URW where you can and many times will do just that. It is fun and handy to have several cabins so that you can travel further in winter and have a place to rest and store some stuff. And it is equally fun to just roam around, hunt, and have no place to call home.

The biggest one on that list I would like to see, bar none, is actually Sailor, because that would mean that there would be the inclusion of sailing to the game, which I think would be absolutely awesome.

I'd say that both can be fun. I only wonder how navigation will be done - particularly about celestial navigation - will there be procedurally generated stars, planets, and moons to use for navigation? That could be very immersive.

Pirate & nautical roles take my vote.

Fighting the captain/captains to wrestle control of a ship, similarly to town ownership in a mutiny with some like minded friends sounds like a lark, grapple and throw the captain overboard to the sharks. Or be caught in a naval battle and climb over the ship (naturally i assume larger class of ship) with H holding and grappling to maneuver, putting your carpentry skills to good use in applying relevant repairs.

Though im also very taken with being a independent bannerlord and assembling a military force through strong connections and enlisting folk in the towns to join my own army entity (taking in the stride of the mount and blade franchise)

How? These two have VERY different settings.

I mean you probably can be a customs officer if those are implemented, and calculate how much merchants have to pay, but that doesn't seem fun at all. It will be very tedious.

That sounds like a good description of Papers, Please. I guess lots games could be thought of as tedious – any game that involves doing a small set of simple tasks over-and-over. Calculating customs fees doesn't sound very adventurous, but being a traveling tax collector might.

In Papers please you have to check documents for discrepancies and do so fast - that works well as a logic game of quick memorising things. Being a customs officer requires counting goods, checking laws or taxation tables, without any time limit which would be hard to justify - while I do think that some might find it interesting and being very simple to do, we could get this profession eventually.

Being a travelling tax collector would be fun - there are many things that can happen on the way when you are carrying quite a lot of money, local peasants could get very upset so that you'd have to do your best to pacify them, your ruler might get angry if you collect too little, and you might just want to take a piece for yourself. That does sound like fun.

How do you suppose that would translate to gameplay? You sit a a table and write about a subject and conduct observations on what to look at? (A definitive guide on 'Tracking your way to knowledge' it is well written because its extremely easy to learn) though actually expanding you knowledge with meaningful secrets such as 'craft this' or 'raise this topic in discussion for more talking options' etc would be good.

Becoming famous for your work and building a library collection of books might be useful in the future when magic is in but besides the obvious cash you can make out of making good quality books (and getting the paper material) will it end up like the sims painting? Where you just have a bunch of hob-goblin adventurers/companions forced to work in your basement churning out work?

Well if all else fails you can write 50 shades of granite.

I haven't really thought it through, and I suppose it might well be the kind of gameplay that would bore a lot of people... but, sure, even something like that sounds fun to me already. But if one is, say, a botanist, one might imagine going out into the forests and collecting specimens, then taking them to some kind of study or lab for experimentation or documentation. One might practice one's drawing skill for the latter purpose. I'm sure there are quite a lot of things one could be doing other than just sitting and writing.

On the one hand, being a natural philosopher is probably handy combat wise for building up a complex beastiary entry and then executing that in combat to your advantage. (Taking note of the position of the organs to land a precise strike on the chest to stab a troll through the heart) besides just learning a little.

1. Judge/lawyer/wandering lawman
2. Thief
3. Assassin

All sorts of cunning jobs sound interesting, whether it's about piecing together a mystery or sneaking around. If detective/investigator was on the list, that would be my ultimate favorite by combining both into one.

And finally, assassinations sound like the most effective way a single person could change the world without being a noble. There's a lot of wrongs you could right if you managed to murder the right people without getting caught.

I voted for all the crafting-related professions---I want to be able to do things in adventure mode (Other than getting repeatedly stabbed in the head by goblins, humans, and everything).

Once we get all those, I will absolutely become a scholar, just as soon as learning everything has value. I will learn ALL the knowledge! And once we get magic, I think you can probably guess what I'll do then.

You can already be a few of these things in the list if you know how to get to that point (highwayman/soldier/commander)

It requires some work to get there though (killing someone and telling the bandit leader-> ask to become liutenant) is one example, and military commanders (like lords/bandit leaders) under a players control can only hire new soldiers. (Become bandit leader through succession by killing him/her when you are a liutenant) right now.

Also you can assassinate and it does have an effect (too easy though)

While it may seem dull at first glance, I think I'd like to see a "delivery man" of sorts. For example, say someone runs up to you as you're leaving town and hands you a +copper bracelet+, asking you to get it to his lover in the town over. Small things like that. Or a lord bids you to bring a specially made silver dagger with an image of an ash tree in its hilt to the elvish kingdom nearby in order to sanctify the newly-made peace treaty. There could then be a time mechanic added to it as well, since tensions would rise without some form of physical object to add to their verbal agreement. Sure, not many people would want to play the role of "the mail man", but it would be convenient, given how much the typical adventurer travels.

I think this would be an easy start for implementing professions as well, since it partially builds off mechanics that already exist. The person to whom the object is going to would have to be 1. someone pulled from the requesting person's list of associates, and 2. as far as the requesting person knows is still alive. There would most likely be a limit on what objects could be given (since we wouldn't want them to be giving away the clothes on their back) so for convenience sake let's just say finished goods and weapons. You can already ask for the location of people, so that would tie into it. there ought to be a way to lie if you couldn't find the individual. The benefit for finishing people's deliveries would most likely be something non-tangible, like being known by villagers as "dependable/trustworthy).

It'd be a bad opportunity to roll for a giant tortoise man then (given they have decent stats and a ability to retract into their bodies)

On the flipside, choosing a glass cannon cheetah man might work out better for your courier work.

Of them all I want to see the Farming skills opened up to adventure mode.  We can build our small towns or cabins now, it'd be nice to plant some crops.  Also just the animal taming alone would be spectacular, have a dwarf crossbowman ranger running around with a pack of wolves or a few bears or giant tigers

On the subject of animal taming Toady has discussed it before Its a subject of this DFtalk (http://), calming animals down and such and bringing along animals that are hostile to goblins or quite loyal anyway.

But yeah, i guess farming roles in adventure mode would probably need some more input into the farming system (so that while it might be a nice place to build, the ground could be too marshy/wrong biome/infertile) to add complexity rather than plopping plants anywhere.

Random thoughts:

Being able to make "career changes" would be nice. A spinner becomes a soldier, etc.

A thing that would enrich professions, is being able to link some of them to civ specific positions. Could your typical adventurer become the sheriff of a hilllock?

After seeing the world gen stories Toady described about the spread of various religions, I think priest/preacher could be really fun.  Wander around, promoting your god and preaching their message, maybe intimidate a rival or two... maybe start a holy war or two, make your god number one by slaughtering some of the rival faiths...

Yeah but I was thinking more of actually having peasants under you, gaining an upkeep from their produce and actually being a vassal of the King of the civilization in question. Also being able to deliver justice to your peasants and define crimes and such (basically be a fleshed out ruler).

There are very few games that can work as a fantasy life simulator. I only know two that allow you to live a profession, live a daily life minute by minute and interact with the world around you (trade, do quests etc.) - Cataclysm DDA (but the post-apocalyptic setting seriously hampers your contact with the outside world) and UnRealWorld (low tech makes crafting rather limited).

I really wish that in the future updates we’ll get the ability to truly simulate life in a fantasy world - have a profession, work, get married, make friends, rent a property etc. You can “kinda” do a lot of that now, but just “kinda”.

Whats great about df is that it has the whole active world in the background as of 40.00 which means that when he does add these professions properly it will allow the player a much more immersive experience (and already does to an extent) https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:World_activities

The villains should further improve this.

The other part is that there are no artificial limitations, you can run off and quite literally be whoever and whatever you want. You want to be a bard one playthrough alright, monster slayer awesome, guy who has a cabin in the woods and hunts things , BAM. Its all there, and it doesn't attempt any limits. And has infinite "quests"  This distinguishes it from games such as https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/fantasy-life-3ds/
Which have a storyline per type of "life" but once you are done you are done.

I love how df works even now, i like being a bard, killing big giants, selling my bone crafts etc. In the next version i can even be an investigator, its amazing. It will be even better once everything is added. For example being able to join one of the new merc companies and have a dark brotherhood type situation.

The persistent world also helps.

I wonder how hard it would be for Toady to add proper crafting to the game. Modders have already added some depth to it and I’ve just discovered you can even do a lot of fortress mode crafting if you’re using dfhack. If modders without access to the source code can do that, Toady surely can too. It’s probably good to keep this topic visible, to let him know how many people want those sort of things.

Keeping a topic viable to let Toady know people want it is more of a Suggestions Sub thing then a General Discussion Sub thing.

I. Ruler - So you can actually own sites and subjects (You could leave a Steward home taking care of things and just check up on them from time to time)
II. Sailor - We need boats!
III. Lawman - Investigating and punishing criminals!

III seems like it will be a possible playstyle in the new version.

Is it? I thought that changes to the law are rudimentary, at best, and I don’t think that you can interact with the law in any way yet - either to defend someone or pass judgement.

You can interrogate people. But there's not much investigation work to be done. It was all put off due to the need to start on Steam work.

It’s not really a suggestion so it’s probably in the right place.

What’s sad is that this poll is several years old and life-like professions are clearly the most popular and yet there’s no work done on them. Almost 120 people voted in this poll, it should impact development.

It’s definitely not a suggestion and that’s why I posted it here.

I wanted to create a topic that will help Toady see what we want to see in the adventure mode, and do with it what he will. It looks like he ignored it (particularly with craftdswarf/farmer, doable with mods and dfhack but not in vanilla) and fair enough, it’s his game.

Though, honestly, the disparity between what’s being created for the game and what the community wants is at least quite interesting.

My long-time fantasy in DF is retiring to a quiet village after a life of adventuring, opening a tavern and telling stories of my exploits to travellers or perhaps move to a quiet priory and chronicle all my achievements and/or crimes. AFAIK no game lets you do that.

You can already write a book about events you caused, I think.

From those who seem, short term "doable" (as pirate would need ships / spy would need more suoerfuge)
1) Weapon / armor smith. (so you can equip yourself)
2) Animal trainer (if you could domesticate for the whole civ)
3) expédition leader (would be a nice transition between the two modes adv/fort)

I wish we had multiple topics per book.

I suppose it has to be on the way, at some point at least, perhaps confined to a certain category - like a book on a certain dwarven civilisation that mentions major events in its history. Being a chronicler and learning about various events from many NPCs would probably be one of the best professions!

Barber. I want to become a necromancer and collect years worth of hair from a town, then resurrect it all in the middle of the most busy spot I can find.
