Title: Need some dwarves
Post by: Jreengus on October 28, 2007, 03:05:00 pm
EDIT: I don't pay much attention but just recently realised new version is coming out so i flooded our fort

Ok so im starting a new game after some selfish dwarf decided to lock all the doors in my fort and flood it with lava =p

So anyhow I need 6 brave (and lava-proof) dwarves to join me. I'm bringing a pick and an axe, which means everyone gets 83 points to spend as they want you also get to pick what type of map you want (I'll go for a comprimise) you can choose your name and everyone gets 1 request.

When the original 7 die I'll abandon the fortress.

Edit: Edited title =p i was gunna make this a post about a succesion game but i couldnt be bothered, to be clear: Not A Succession Game.

Edit 2: how do you change names?

Yay I can join in the original 7.

Can I be the Miner. All points into mining.
Everything else into Food or booze. Remember, When buying booze it is best to get at least one of each type because then you will get more barrels.

For the name put in Kira.

Request: One of every type of room that can be assigned to my dwarf. And all of them connected to each other.
Bedroom
Study
Dining Room
Statue Garden
Etc.

This can be done further down the road.

Skilled gem cutter, Skilled jeweler and Skilled glassmaker. I would like a map with elephants, hopfuly undead ones. I would like a personal magma glass furnace and a jeweler's shop in my room once we reach the magma. Any extra points go into rum.

Don't get get horse meat get turtle. Turtles are better then horse meat because they cost the same, but leave behind a few bones and shells to work with which can help get the marksdwarves trained sooner.

Now then are we going to get to discuss the layout of the fort or is that up to you?

sure feel free to request where you want the fortress and generall layout and i will go for the best comprimise with what you all want

For starters the fortress entrance shouldn't be a single opening that leads to the magma. That is an efficient and simple design however it is not very useful for siege weapon defense which is just so wonderful.

code:

.....rrrr........#SSS
.....rrrr........#SSS
.....rrrr........#SSS
.....rrrr........####
+++++bbbb++++++++++++
+++++bbbb++++++++++++
+++++bbbb++++++++++++
.....rrrr........####
.....rrrr........#SSS
.....rrrr........#SSS
.....rrrr........#SSS

Ballistas will miss the bottle neck on the bridge, Catapults don't do as much damage and what ever you do don't point the ballistas at each other to shoot into the entrance.

code:

.....rrrr........####
.....rrrr.....+++++++
.....rrrr.....+++++++
.....rrrr.....+++++++
.....rrrr.....+++####
+++++bbbb++++++++#SSS
+++++bbbb++++++++#SSS
+++++bbbb++++++++#SSS
.....rrrr.....+++####
.....rrrr.....+++++++
.....rrrr.....+++++++
.....rrrr.....+++++++
.....rrrr........####

A design similar to this is far more effective since it shoots straight into the bottle neck. The road does not have to go both north and south but does need to go one way.
The disadvantage is it is harder to place traps for goblins. The other advantage is that since humans don't have building destroyer when their diplomat comes in have him walk one way then when they siege us have the army go the other way.

code:

.....rrrr........##########
.....rrrr.....+++++++++++++
.....rrrr.....+++++++++++++
.....rrrr.....+++++++++++++
.....rrrr.....+++##########
~~~~~rrrr~~~~~+++#...SSS...
+++++bbbb++++++++#SSSSSS...
+++++bbbb++++++++#SSSSSSSSS
+++++bbbb++++++++#SSS...SSS
~~~~~rrrr~~~~~+++#......SSS
.....rrrr.....+++##########
.....rrrr.....+++++++++++++
.....rrrr.....+++++++++++++
.....rrrr.....+++++++++++++
.....rrrr........##########

This design although more complicated and has unusually placed siege engines, can clear the road and bridge in a single well timed volley. Even poorly timed volleys will cripple an invader.

[EDIT]
. =Flat ground
r =River
+ =Road
# =Wall(Some have fortifications)
S =Siege Engine
~ =Channel
b =Bridge

West. This allows the bridge to be cleared of enemies whenever we feel like it.

Where is everyone? I thought this would be full twenty minutes ago.

hopefully they will turn up soon so i can get started, otherwise i might just start it as the three of us and see how long we can survive with just us 3 (killing any immigrants)

This is interesting. The first one of these took half an hour. This is at two hours. Maybe it was just bad timing. People tend to check later on in the day.

Well, spend some points on miner, mechanic and, as I am a complete jackass, soaper, no just kidding, maybe... metalsmith, no wait! Engraver! What fits the inventor style, like Blitukus? And buy some mermaid meat.  :roll:

ok so far you are competent mechanic competent miner and competent engraver which comes to 54 points so you have 29 more to spend not got mermaid meat (can you actually get it?) so what do you want? dont need to specify a number if you cant remember points just pick some stuff and ill get as much as you can have of it
Title: Re: Need some dwarves
Post by: Armok on October 28, 2007, 06:06:00 pm
OK, will do.
Maybe some other odd thing you can find looking trough the item list, mermaid meat, for example, if Toady didn't remove that bug.

What if we start the fortress in the new version? I'd have to pick some different skills, but it would be cool.

If we do, I suggest a fort next to the ocean and make me our brewer/butcher/cook/fish cleaner.

We need more dwarves, we're at 4 after over 4 hours.

To change names I think you have to enter the game, select the dwarf, profile, customize, nickname. That should do it

[EDIT]
Make that 6 hours

Do we start with only 5 dwarves or wait till tomorrow?

Maybe we name the other two Toady One and Threetoe

I'll join.  I'm more of a tradesperson or technologist myself.  Oh, and I like ranged weapons and ballistae, if that helps you to decide my skills.

Hmm, a miner, a jewel/glass/gemcutter, building designer/mason/wrestler, mechanic/miner/engraver, a...tradeperson/technologist who likes ballistae and ranged weapons....

Toss me in, if you haven't started already.
18 points each in cooking, brewing, and either farming or herbalism, whichever will work better on the chosen map.

The rest of the points in seeds or food.

1st Granite
   (http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2876/01zh1.th.jpg)
Well we are finally here, just a few weeks ago I was a pennyless dwarf with no more than a pick an axe and an old minning claim to my name. I have managed to convince 6 other dwarves to help me mine this mountain for its mineral riches. Starring up at the cliff face I realised what a momentus task this was, Kira strode up to me and offered me several sets of plans he had drawn out for defending our new fort. Although I secretly doubted this Mountain contained enough mineral wealth to attract more than passing notice by other races i looked over the plans and quickly agreed with him that the third one was the best, he set to work clearing out the damaged stone from the front of the cliff, building us a basic cave to store the food in.

8th Granite
I had heard tales of undead around here before but doubted them however i can no longer deny that the groundhogs here are not alive, I have had Mad Jackal build some doors for the cave, I meanwhile have been working on building us some beds while Bog Kormas has created some mechanisms which with a little effort could be used to drop a heavy rock on anyone entering our cave.

14th Granite
With the cave complete and the doors in place i have instructed Kira to dig deeper into the mountain, maybe it will contain some natural barier capable of stopping these undead, even if it does not we are unlike to strike minerals sitting in a cramped cave twiddling our thumbs
   (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/4730/01no3.th.jpg)

17th Granite
We had quite a shock today as a skeletal groundhog approached our workshops, the majority of us were terrified but Mad Jackal proved her worth beyond doubt as she stood her ground against the creature tearing its bones apart, she is being hailed as a hero!

26th Granite
Success! We have hit silver!
 (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/7527/01rl3.th.jpg)

1st Slate
We have hit a river in the mountain Kira was caught in the flood which came pouring down our mine but apart from getting a little wet he is fine, i have noticed that in the shallower areas of the flood much mud has been left behind, when the water retreats I shall have Sparksol begin farming.
