Title: {Succession} The Museum
Post by: Squeegy on April 13, 2008, 03:53:00 pm
Hello. Some of you might remember me. Well, I'm Squeegy, a Dwarf Fortress player from a while ago. I quit for two long periods of time after DF ruined my best fortess in 38a. I came back, found my other The Museum thread gone, and left again. Now that I'm back, I've decided to recreate The Museum.

The Museum! How does it work? Well, the entire fortress is devoted to creating one museum. The rules of the Museum:

1. Only exceptional, masterpiece, or artifact works of art.
2. Exhibits can include socks, bolts, engravings, bridges, etc. I'm not picky, as long as it's good quality.
3. The Museum cannot be used for anything other than storage. This means no eating in the Museum. No sleeping in The Museum. No sparring in The Museum. No workshops in the Museum. Got it?
4. The Museum must not have blood, vomit, or anything on any part of it. It gets on a wall, you replace the wall. It gets on an exhibit, you replace the exhibit. Okay?
5. Arenas can be placed in the Museum.

More may be added.

Curators
1. Thasero
2. Dwarf Fanatic
3. Boksi
4. Squeegy

Requirements:
None. You do not have to be good at DF to sign up. Anyone can be curator of the museum!

Sounds like fun - sign me up!

This thread should be moved to the "Community Games and Stories" forum, though.

Question:  So there's no eating, sleeping, sparring, or workshops inside the Museum, but what about making meeting rooms?  Having dwarves go admire the fine sculptures seems entirely appropriately for a Museum.

Also, I assume the arena grounds themselves are exempt from the "no blood" rule? =)

Well, yes, of course. Also, a meeting room isn't a building, like a bed or a workshop. Also, I didn't know that existed.

I meant as in a sculpture garden etc. that's set as a meeting area.

I'll go see if I can rustle up a good seed - succession games get bogged down when people don't take their turn, so I want to get the starting turn done and ready for hand-off as quickly as possible.

As long as they're masterpiece, exceptional or artifact statues, sure. Also, go ahead. But choose a mountain place.

Recommendations:
-Adamantine
-Magma
-Some trees

Other than that, choose wherever seems best.

I'm sorting through worlds right now.  I'm not going to be picky about mineral types or other special features, but I want to make sure there's at least magma, sand, trees, and water so we can have a good range of activities.

I found a spot that has all the above requirements, but is a snow-covered, flatlands forest.  It'll do in a pinch - especially since year-round freeze would allow for an ice sculpture exhibit or similar Insane Mega-Project - but I agree that mountainous spots are preferable

OK, I found a nice spot.  Local area is a combination of mountains, sandy desert, and temperate shrubland, with a volcanic magma pipe in the middle.  There's dolomite in one of the biomes for flux, an aquifer and a brook for water, and a reasonable number of trees, although not enough that we can train a woodcrafter from scratch.  It also has a chasm with cave spiders, so making silk is a possibility.

I've already started and should have an update for you in a day or two.  I'm going to focus on making a stable fortress at first, and get workshops and so forth in order, including supplies of magma and water.

This sounds interesting but i agree that it should probably go in the stories and games forum. I would join but eeh my PC time is limited and I only have a dial-up internet connection. So Uploading/Downloading 20+ mb maps might be a problem. Ill just watch for now.

Very Interested. Yeah, I'm new to the game and the forums but what can I ruin? Just set quality to great and up...

I'm in, like last time. And this time, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to actually take my turn.

Oh, I forgot to mention this: Turns will be a year, with a month extra if the curator has something like an exhibit they need to finish before their turn is over.

What, again? How about reviving old game instead of starting a new one?

You should put the finest works inside glass cases!

Also, pressure pads and traps would be a must to protect them...

Journal of Edem Umstizcatten, First Curator of "Goldgifted"

12th Moonstone- ART!  I hate art.  Well, I guess statues aren't all bad.  Good, decent, rock statues.  No, no... ARTISTS!  That's the real problem.  Art would be just fine if it weren't for them.  Leave the "feelings" and all that blather for those sissy, pantywaist elves, I say.

That's why, please, Armok, if you're really there, please, let me die in a cave-in - an honest, dwarvenly cave-in, just like Papa Umstizcatten - before I get to the Museum.   To think that that rotten slime, Bomrek, "suggested" to the King that I was the best dwarf for the job!  Why the King thought a barren wasteland in the middle of nowhere to be an excellent location to send his best miner, I have no idea.

But if there's anything less dwarven then art, it's loyalty, and what's left of Papa Umstizcatten - rest his soul - would turn in his grave if he knew I went against the King.  I don't have any choice but to start the work.  Myself and six others will set out for Limulegen, "Goldgifted", and prepare the way for the artisans that are scheduled to come later and build a "glorious" - ha! - monument to dwarven "craftsmanship" - double ha!

Our expedition consists of:

Myself, a miner a negotiator;
Degel Sanadducim, a miner and cook;
Edzul Uristotad, carpenter;
Olon Ifinled, a woodcutter who is equally adept at chopping limbs with her ax;
Risen Stibmerkadol, a mason;
Ustuth Dallithkeskal, farmer;
and Avuz Tosidod, a mechanic and brewer.

I have chosen to bring along ample supplies of food, booze, and wood.  The surrounding area is only lightly forested, and the large stockpile of lumber will grant us a long reprieve before it becomes necessary to rely on Olon's ax.

1st Granite - We have arrived at the future site of Goldgifted.  For better or worse, I cannot leave until my time is done.  At least my six companions are solid, dependable dwarves that I can trust in this hard job.  Strike the earth!

2nd Granite - Lousy... incompetent... worthless... FOOLS!  Edzul, who was supposed to guide us to our destination, misread the map.  The water table that is only supposed to be present on the north side of the volcano also extends to where we chose to excavate - within hours of digging, Degel and I struck aquifer.  I take everything back.  Please, Armok - just one little cave-in!  That's all I ask!

11th Granite - Our attempt to bypass the aquifer by digging closer to the volcano has failed.  The lava pipe narrows in such a way that we cannot avoid the aquifer without incinerating ourselves.  We have no choice but to move our building site further south and dig into the mountain proper, though that will make it more difficult to reach the resources in the northern area.

In the meantime, the rooms we have dug close to the surface will suffice for temporary housing.

11th Slate - The entrance in the southern foothills is now ready, and we have begun moving supplies inside.  First, however, we will return to the initial rooms for much-needed rest.  Then the beds can be moved back to the proper, mountainous site.  I should have known better than to trust anything that wasn't rock from the surface down.

24th Slate - The mountain site has been expanded subtantially, and Ustuth has begun planting our precious underground crops in the loam protected from the sun.  I've also just received word that a small amount of aluminum has been struck in what will become one of our storage areas.

1st Hematite - I've told Degel to put down his pick for a while and begin cooking the food supplies we brought from the Mountainhomes.  It will be quite some time before they actually begin to go bad, but I hope that Degel's talented preparation - plus a little spice - can make our stores into valuable trade goods.  On the same note, I've ordered that a trade depot be constructed.  Before leaving, I extracted a promise that a caravan would be sent to our site to bring whatever we could not take ourselves.

18th Malachite - Our outpost is coming along quite well.  That Armok-forsaken water table has given us a steady supply of water available from our well, and I've marked out the area where the King's so-called "Museum" should be situated, though there will be nothing to place there for some time.

Already there is ample room for more dwarves to live and work; Armok damn me if I get caught unprepared for the artisans that will alive later - no matter how much I might wish they fall into the volcano instead.

That reminds me...

1st Limestone - The plan is complete!  A large trench has been dug around the entrance with an underground channel connecting it to the volcanic magma.  It will take quite some time for the channel to fill, but even empty the trench is a formiddable barrier.  Risen, the mason, has built a simple bridge across the trench that can be withdrawn by pulling a lever near the outpost's central stairwell.

Degel and I have also begun tunneling out pipes to carry the magma inside our outpost and fuel smelters and workshops.  It will truly be a long time before that plan succeeds, however.

10th Limestone - The promised caravan has arrived.  No doubt one of them is the King's dwarf, sent to make sure I haven't abandoned my post.  I will stay here for the mandated year - and not a second longer!

24th Limestone - The caravan accepted a large quantity of Degel's foodstuffs for an iron anvil and a variety of meat, booze, and raw materials.  The anvil and raw materials are for the coming artisans' workshops.  The meat is for Degel's kitchen.  The booze is for me, after the thought of those beardless artisans coming to whine about the "drab", "backwater", "barbaric" outpost that a decent, Armok-fearing dwarf like me calls home.  I can't wait to leave.

4th Sandstone - A commotion has occurred at the front gate as a pack of rhesus macaques apparently tried to rush the trade depot and steal the caravan's goods.  The guards had none of it and rushed to deal out steely dwarven vengeance to the thieves.

9th Sandstone - More thieves!  This time, a kobold.  The pathetic creature apparently tripped over a stray kitten in front of the bridge and fled for his life as soon as one of the caravan guards turned to see what the sound was.

Our liason with the Mountainhomes has asked us to prepare headwear, footwear, shields, bucklers, musical instruments, and cooked meals to send back for next year.  I supposed Degel will be happy to hear the last part.

8th Timber - They're finally here.  Armok, why hast thou forsaken me?

Two gem setters,
Three peasants,
A grower,
A miner,
An engineer, and
An armorer

have appeared to join us.  Fortunately, there is more than enough room - I had expected more to arrive than a mere nine.

6th Moonstone - I've managed to keep these... people busy for a while arranging and rearranging furniture inside the outpost, but at least I had to give in to their begging to "begin the great work" and allow some of the dwarves to actually use the workshops they have been building.  At least they won't actually be ready to put anything in the Museum until I'm long gone.

26th Moonstone - Praise Armok!  At last, some genuinely good news.  It seems our tiny outpost's name, "Goldgifted", was well-chosen.  A large vein of gold ore has been find running through a corner of the Museum.  The artisans at first complained of the sacrilege of ruining the exhibition floors straight lines, but as I pointed out, Risen could simply rebuild the walls later... and it was gold.  Not even these lily-livered pansies can deny their dwarf blood far enough to deny that attraction.  Gold!  I've ordered everyone to bring the ore up to the area where our smelters will work.

Meanwhile, the Museum floor has been finished alongside the vein.  I could almost appreciate the sight of all that mined rock, if I didn't know that the fools will probably toss it all out to make room for their "masterpieces".

(http://i30.tinypic.com/33yrlp3.jpg)

My successors have merely to place their "art" - ha! - wherever they please inside the rooms (or dig further rooms of their own).  Everything south of the four double doors shall be the Museum that our King has asked for.

13th Opal - I take it back.  We're cursed.  Doomed!  The precious gold sits unused below the smelters - and this time I have no one to blame but myself.  The trench and pipe system for carrying magma to the smelters is far too large and unwieldy - even after all these months, the smelters have not yet received enough heat to begin working.

(http://i32.tinypic.com/x59jdj.jpg)

There is nothing to do but try again; Degel, myself, and Atir, the miner who arrived with the artisans and helped us dig out the Museum, will dig two additional pipes to the volcanic caldera.  Hopefully three such pipes will manage to replace the magma faster then it cools while traveling down the one pipe that leads to the outpost.

4th Obsidian - I find myself at loose ends as my term as Curator draws to a close.  Finally, the end is near.  In a few short weeks I will be rid of this outpost and everything and everyone inside it.  Ustuth ingizikal, the armorsmithing artisan, has asked - politely, for a wonder! - if I could continue the outpost's main staircase downwards in search of valuable ores that the metalworks will eventually be able to use.  I've decided to grant his request, since ensuring that more valuable rock is excavated will no doubt be the last truly dwarvenly thing Ustuth accomplishes in this Armok-forsaken monarchical boondoggle.

And I'm curious as well to see if there's anything inte-

(http://i28.tinypic.com/24zykwx.jpg)

30th Obsidian - ART!  I love art!  But especially I love artists - the piteous whining sound they make when unhappy, their grating similarity to elves, the way that they plague honest, Armok-fearing dwarves with unreasonable demands.  But more than anything, I love how staying as their leader will let me be near to lovely, precious, beautiful adamantine.

His Majesty has given me permission to stay as the miner and broker of this outpost, although he has already promised the post of Curator for the next year to some other dwarf.  Now, of all times, I wish Bomrek were there to whisper in His Majesty's ear again.  At least I can stay at Goldgifted and maybe touch... even mine out... that precious, precious ore.

Just one thing bothers me.  Why did His Majesty's letter of reply say that he would "hear of the Museum's progress directly, as planned"?

I'll upload the save in a moment.  I have something to... take care of.  Yes.

The save is here:
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=113

I wonder who will be the first Curator to add an adamantine item to the Museum?

Some things I forgot to mention:

1. I asked the liasion to bring tanned hides and cut gems for next year.  I like to have cut gems for strange moods, and find that buying tanned hides is a really cheap way to get a legendary leatherworker.  It's cheap and flexible, and you can use the bins once you're done.

2. The lever by the stairwell retracts the bridge (note, it does retract rather than raising, so it drops units in the lava instead of flinging them to relative safety).  The lever by the hatch in the smelting area opens that hatch, which is where a dumping zone is marked.  Remember to close the hatch immediately, before smoke and boiling metal are released into the fortress.

3. A sand collection area is available by the farm.  The well by the dining room is marked for fishing.  Only the woodcutter ever needs to go outside.

4.  There is a chasm somewhere on the map.  You can find it by having your bookkeeper raise precision, going to the stock screen, and 'z'ooming to any item that logically must be in the chasm (cave spider silk in a building, or nake mole dog bones).  It's cheating, but it's also just about the only way to actually find the dang thing.

Glassmaking would be a good first profession to focus on so the jewelers have green glass to practice on, but nothing magma-related will actually work until the magma reaches the smelters.  Sorry that I muffed that.

There's a link at the bottom for moving posts, but that's for administrators, i.e. Toady.  I don't see a way to flag posts to be moved...?
