How this Thread is Managed

1) The following form is to be utilized when posting details about a new forum game that has been started.  I will be editing it to have a format similar to those below.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
2) Games will be moved from 'Active' to 'Inactive' if there is a one week gap without any posts at all within the thread.  Games may also be moved to this section by GM request.
3) Games will be moved from 'Inactive' to 'Archived' if there have been no posts for a month by any individual.  Games may also be moved to this section by GM request.
(Edit: Don't have near enough time to do this right now.)
4) The number of categories will be limited to how the game is played, as that aspect is the most important aspect of each game as it is the most pervasive element.
5) Movement between the three states shall be attempted to be done each Friday.  If something has come up to render this false, I will notify the thread.  (See: Note after 3.)
6) Updates to the game list from in-thread posts should be at most every other day will be done when I have time.  If something has come up to render this longer, I will notify the thread.

Name: Septerra - Rise of the Junkers
Category: Cooperative/RPG-style (Players create a character based on a few simple choices for skills, and choose their actions directly. Characters will have stats and unique weapons and abilities)
Link: Right here (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=161157.0)
GM: Xvareon
Description: This will be a forum game centered around the world of Septerra, a world of floating continents miles in the sky in seven orbital layers, called "Shells", around the central planetary "Core". The players are Junkers who live on Shell 2, a poorly-inhabited layer of floating islands where other Shells typically dump their scrap, salvage, and unwanted junk. The game will have a strong focus on creating useful and unique items from things you find in the field, or salvage off the equipment carried by enemies.

Current status: Active, OPEN! Looking for players! Only about half a week before I lock teams in!

Description: An ugly calculator that vaguely resembles a game. Its rules are too difficult for most players to comprehend so they mostly fail to gather food and starve or chase monsters alone without a weapon and shit like that, causing the GM to lose faith in humanity. The waitlist to join is currently open... But don't expect a spot to open up anytime soon because in Gridland Survival, things are going nowhere fast. Warning: The GM for this game is snarky.

We don't actualy have a log of active RTD's anywhere, (The RTD board just has a hall of fame) so I vote yes to this.

Added the Roll to Dodge category with the update and made a slight modification to the sheet to request recruitment status.  Figured that might be something important that I had forgotten.

Edit:
I'll just.. Drop this list here. They're all currently on hiatus. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=150546.0)

Might be better to mention when they come back online, if all of them are on hiatus.  While the Arms Race Hub is up there, I'm thinking of removing it.  May move it to a 'hub' category, and if so, I'll drop your list there.

Wouldn't hurt to link to the old archive list (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=136383.msg5010614#msg5010614), theres some good reads in there.

I think I'll add it to the OP in a hub section, moving both Kevak's thread, the Arms Race Hub, the Fire Emblem Hub, and whatever others of similar type I can find.

Right, it looks like my assumption that this list would be more populated and the Friday search through would be a mere 'fill in what hasn't come in' was false.  Considering the proportion that would show up with lackluster descriptions...yeah, I'm going to remove that bit...

I'm planning on sticking around for awhile.  If my interest truly starts to flag, then I'll set up a google doc, but that's probably not going to occur for awhile.  Honestly, the main danger right now is the fact that barely anyone seems to be wanting to put games on the list and we're getting large dead spikes in the thread.

Change Storm to a "single player game," and remove the NEEDS PLAYERS notice.

I'll update it soon.

Better to have the few games that are active than several games that die off fast anyways.

I think a 5 page requirement, min 3 perhaps, will help as proof of concept/dedication/interest. Or if you wish to add a sign-up section for fledgling games to distiguish them from those that arnt.

Suggested edits

Suggestion Games
Games wherein all players suggest the action taken for a single entity. for the turn.
Single is not the defining quality, just a commonality. All players choosing is. As you said, gameplay not theme ect.

Competitive Games
Games wherein players suggest actions for different competing singular entities. take turns to win a goal that is at odds with one or more players.
Competitive games can be abstract. Connect 4 for example. Move away from the entity concept, it's a theme not gameplay.

Cooperative Games
Games wherein players suggest actions for several cooperating entities. take turns to win a goal that is the same as or compatible with one or more players.

Faction Games
Games wherein players are split into playing as different competing factions.
Is this really a large group(is this basically just the middle ground of the previous two?)? Generally any cooperation qualifies it as that type.

Roll to Dodge
Roll to Dodge games.
Not needed. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=150088.0)

Other Games
Games that do not fit into the above categories.

A few more things. While goal is a component, I would not even say it's the main component of gameplay for games. There's some things to take note of. So far every forum game I've ever seen is a take turn game so that's a default.
I think sorting by goal is actually good and probably the only way to do it even though it's not actually gameplay, as the next best thing is gameplay elements and games can have multiple of those. I think sorting by goal rather than theme is a good call, so stick to that. For reference here are some actual gameplay tags.

Worked in the suggestions you made for better descriptions of the current categories and clarified the 'Faction Games' description.  The Roll to Dodge games category does not equal the Roll to Dodge Hall of Fame, so it is being kept.  Due to the distinct low quantity of games on the list as-is, I don't want to split things up further at the current time.  If things were to get to the point where things should be divided up, I'll likely use subcategories in the current, composed of things similar to what you suggested.

How about adding sandbox?

Here is one:

Zenland (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=161748.0): You are an immortal mage. Use your powers of terraforming and sommoning to uncover secrets and sculpt the land in your image. But, what is really going on? Where do these people seem to appear from? What of the warning sensed by the other mages? Discovery and creation is the name of the game! Play it your way. Build structures, armies, and cast powerful spells to achieve any end you could desire. Forge pradise or advenure with each turn. It is truly up to you! [god game] [rpg] [army sim]

SANDBOX GAMES
Games wherein players set thier own goals and player creativity directs gameplay.

Cooperative vs Factions, and a Google Sheet.

I've been thinking about these two catagories. I believe they are the right categories to have, but I believe their descriptions need to be strengthened to make them more independent.

Cooperative Games
Games wherein players take turns to win a goal that is the same as or compatible with many or most other players.

Faction Games
Games wherein players take turns to win a goal that is the same as or compatible with one or more players.

I dropped the cooperative description completely onto faction(the old one worked I just feel this one is more precise), I changed cooperatives description to be more about games where primarily players are working together rather than as a possibility.

My two cents.

Also a Google sheet could really help this project. whether open or you appoint helpers. It could be a good buffer for when you are unable to update the thread from time to time. If you'd like I could make one myself, or if you make it you can be the primary authority.

Edit: for the record I thought I sent this as a PM.

Its possible. There was a thread about how to do it somewhere on bay12. You have to download some kind of software, but I forget the specifics. I think Elephant Parade knows more about it.

I use the notify button all the time. It lets me know that a thread I'm interested in has updated, instead of checking for it every so often or futilely looking for it in the first few pages. Is that really that unusual?

Not super unusual, though I mostly use it to get email notifications when one of my project threads gets a reply. Helps me know to check the forum!

Nah, it's easy enough to follow things, it's posting in every single thread you have updates for is the challenge.

I update new replies all the time.
Title: Re: The Forum Game List
Post by: AoshimaMichio on January 17, 2017, 11:45:01 pm
Posting to follow and using Notify button does the same thing. In the posting page there's "Attachments and other options" where at least I have "Notify me of replies" checked by default.

So on page http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?action=profile;area=notification;u=87967 (where the number is your user id) you see list of threads you have posted, sorted by last update included with link to first unread post. Really handy thing. I don't even know how others are keeping track of their favourite threads.

Every two minutes?  Slow.

I don't even know how others are keeping track of their favourite threads.

Yeah.

Also:

Notify button sends you an email, PTWing adds a thread to the threads that show in your 'Show new replies to your posts' link.

At least, that's how my setup works.

I tend to use notifications for things I need to respond to on a vaguely timely basis, versus just refreshing unread replies for everything else.

That list shows just about everything for me, even DF modding threads and I don't even visit that subboard. Notify button works for me nice, meaning I don't need to do this PTW thing everyone else is doing, "Show new replies to your posts" lists threads I don't care about anymore, the reminder email goes into my trash email anyway so it's no problem either. But whatever floats in your boat. Just letting you know that Notify system is more configurable, you won't be needing any extra softwares to clean up that list.

Hmm...given 'interest check' tends to imply the game is still in its very early infancy, I think that may deserve its own category.

We really need some Senators in Birth of Bureaucracy (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=162325.0) to prevent the Dictator from concentrating all power in his person. In addition, you could pass some legislation making you guys governors of cities and provinces and whatnot, so you could do some empire-building while our nation of Estrella has some fun power-struggle tug-o-war. The senate is all NPC now so they're a bit of a non-entity, which is sad as that makes half the draw of the game non-functional. You could also start with your own private army and just go conquering land for the lols. Really a lot of options open atm.

In addition, the important position of Minister of the Economy is unfilled atm, and we could use a new player for the Minister of Civic Service.

EDIT: This is the closest I could find to a "player recruitment" thread on a quick check, so sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

In the interest of making room for newer Suggestion Games:

Blunderbuss should be removed or marked as Inactive.

I don't know when/if I'll get around to concluding it, but either way it ought not be in the active list.

I suppose that Storm should be marked as inactive as well. I'd be cool with it, since I'm working on programming it as a fully fledged poetry videogame.

Speaking of that, I should probably get back to programming it. My computer science Final Project grade relies on it  :P

Good point. So, games that are needing players should be on top.

Yet running Top Forum Games has taught me atleast one thing, it's that sign up type games are by far the minority(or at least this was true for the votes that were being cast. Maybe not)
