Title: Tactics Advance on Forums: Defense of the Gates
Post by: RoseHeart on November 16, 2016, 12:32:03 pm
I see Fire Emblem has really taken hold on this forum, got its own little subculture. FE is a good game and all but I personally think TA is WAY BETTER. Altitude, directional strategy, skill learning, class swapping.

It would be an effort and it would be pretty caveman but would there being interested in some effort being put into bringing it here?

I've seen games like XCOM -- complete with the tactical map -- work here on Bay 12, so I don't see why this wouldn't. Plus, Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance was one of my favorite games of all time back when I was a kid. ^^  Go for it, man!  I might just write up a character and join it if you do.

I will be hosting from my phone so I can't do images so easily(unless someone wants to recommend an art app for Android). So the map will be ascii. Oh, I welcome any attempts to improve that doodle I made before.

"You! Lyndis was it? Let's see if you can use that thing, I am no warrior..." a tired Nu Mou strained to say, before hobbling away.

This went from an interest check to a real game awfully quick, since you reference the FEF games in the opening post, I'll put out that their popularity has a lot to do with the fact that they have well translated to form game easy to understand but still mechanically and tactically satisfying to play rules available in a fairly well made pdf, so I'm wondering if you have any start with ideas on how to translate Tactics Advance (a game I also quite like) to forum games? Like, what rules you've got 'under the hood' here, if any?

Well, fancy that. I actually still have my old Nintendo Power strategy guide for FF:TA, with all pages intact. I remember the rules pretty well anyway, but this has info on all items, skills, missions... everything. If you need help, I can be a handy reference guide!

I do things because I find theyre fun. I find improvisation fun and I like to start small and grow. Thanks used to own that book.

Since I am the only person doing a Final Fantasy Tactics advance mock-up. That instantly means I am already doing the very best job at it.

Action: Lyndis moves 1 up, and 1 left. Face left.

I want to take things slow until I know more about what's going on. Moving up too far would mean I could get attacked from the side, therefore my attacker would get a big bonus to hit chance.

Lyndis moves 2 left, 1 down, 1 left. Use Sting on the troll to the north (if possible; if not, use a normal attack).

I use the next words cautiously, because I may purposely not do this, but to answer your question why the trolls abilities are not listed on the battlefield....
....it's not in the game.

Ahh... come to think of it, Trolls don't even exist in Final Fantasy that I know of. Not in Tactics Advance, at any rate.

That's true! I think.. But I was referring to how the HUD displays enemy information. A momentary break.. Hey listen, it would be so cool to mix your fog game with this grid system.

How so? All I was using was a standard Roll-to-Dodge rules system.
Title: Re: Tactics Advance on Forums: Defense of the Gates 1/3

I think I can really flesh out this grid system(either here or the Weyland-Yutani game or both) but a good system is just the foundation for a story or experience.

Edit: like a team-up of host and writer...

Lyndis uses the Antidote on herself to cure the poison. She then moves 1 down and 3 left to speak to the Bartender about rumors.

(Hmm... I'm definitely going to need backup here, and that's my only lead so far...)

Lyndis asks about the crypt. Specifically, is it known what kind of people are buried there (race, etc.)? And what are the directions to this place?

Additionally, Lyndis orders two bottles of local beer or similar brew, preferably cold. She then heads out to the crypt to look for the black mage.

(If I were out investigating such creepy circumstances in such a foreboding place, I think I'd appreciate a drink to steady my nerves. Hopefully this Astin feels the same way.)

"On the house."

*looking around*

(Or what's left of it.)

The bartenders strange answer plays around in your mind. The Crypt of the Gods... What could it mean? He could say nothing more.

*outside the crypt*

A large monstrouse mouth at the edge of a forgotten ciffside challenges you to turn away. But before you know, one foot infront of the other leads you inside.

Apparently, this is now a story about the black mage Astin.

Having had ample time to study the crypt, Astin prepares to head back to town...

((Sorry, I've been really distracted by stuff lately.))

Lyndis walks up, and quietly hails Astin once she's close enough.

"Hello, sir. The bartender in town told me you would be here investigating the... surge in monster activity?"

Since this is quite unfamiliar territory, Lyndis carefully looks around, especially watching her footing. Non-humans trespassing on human sacred ground might be a baaad thing.

"I just fought and killed a troll that had found its way into the local pub. There were no guards, not even clanners. It was... a mess."

Lyndis smoothly walks up, and offers one of the beer bottles to the black mage.

"My name's Lyndis. You're Astin, right? Are you a clanner?"
Title: Re: Tactics Advance on Forums: Defense of the Gates
Post by: Supernerd on December 05, 2016, 11:51:55 pm
"I'd say that one monster doesn't constitute a surge."

Astin gestures with his hand to indicate a disinterest in Lyndis's gift.

"I used to have a clan, yes. We had some, lets call them issues I would rather not discuss sober. And I am certainly not inclined to drink out here..."
Title: Re: Tactics Advance on Forums: Defense of the Gates
Post by: Xvareon on December 06, 2016, 03:36:14 pm
Lyndis lowers her hand, politely nodding at the glowing yellow eyes just visible under Astin's black hood. She puts the beer bottles in her backpack for now. They might still be useful.

"It's surge enough when they get far enough to threaten lives right in the middle of town," Lyndis points out. "If you're heading back that way... well, there's likely a quest or two at the pub related to all this." She smiled. "And with so few others around... there's much less competition. Would you be interested in cooperating?"
