In the PC Gamer interview: http://www.pcgamer.com/why-the-creator-of-dwarf-fortress-is-really-excited-about-boats/ , Tarn was asked, "When you're implementing a system like economy, for example, do you do a lot of research?" In response, Tarn mentioned his inspiration for Economy in DF came from, "collected economic... I don't remember the name of the book anymore, but an economic geography of the middle ages, like three volumes."
Do you happen to have the name of the book? I searched around and came across a couple and wondered if these were the correct ones.
Mediaeval Economy and Society by M. M. Postan
and
A Social and Economic History of Medieval Europe by Gerald A. Hodgett
In addition, this sounds like a comparable book: Medieval Cities: Their Origins and the Revival of Trade by Henri Pirenne, Michael McCormick
Thanks,

Heck, I'd love to know about what books Toady uses to research no matter the subject. Tell us, Mr Adams!

Not sure if this is the book he talked about but it is a start: https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/cambridge-economic-history-of-europe-from-the-decline-of-the-roman-empire/BF4088E7BB8871894D46E2CF1A3494FC (https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/cambridge-economic-history-of-europe-from-the-decline-of-the-roman-empire/BF4088E7BB8871894D46E2CF1A3494FC)

I have Economic and social history of medieval Europe by Henri Pirenne
I feel it focus's mostly on the economic rather than the social history

Yeah, that link was correct, I think, though I'm not sure about the editions and such. Think it was the first three volumes here:
https://www.cambridge.org/core/series/cambridge-economic-history-of-europe/45E27C55D4B2F5F793520E4FE0CFFAE7
From Vol 4 on it gets well past the 1400 cutoff.

Moreover, Pirenne is quite obsolete (dating from the 1920's or something like this) and part of his thesis were proven wrong later.
I don't know if it was translated in english but Philippe Contamine has written a very good "L'économie Médiévale" (The Medieval Economy)
