Title: Best Forum Game Sites?

Hello, I am looking for all the best places to play and host play-by-post, aka forum games.

So far I know of:

Highly Active (9) ★ ♥♥♥
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Moderately Active (5) ★★ ♥♥♥
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Minimal Activity (8) ♥♥♥
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Disclaimer: Forums with few active threads, may be highly active within them.

★ = I recommend
♥ = You recommend

If there are multiple areas, which would a Bay 12 user find most familiar? At this time this list is just to get people's foot in the door.

If your post is informative I will link to it, too. And if you've tried one of these, tell us what you think!

Actually P-ingTW on this. Could use a site which is a little more forgiving to my timetable.

giant in the playground has (or used to have, last I checked) a huge play by post section

it was primarily tabletop rpgs due to the nature of the site

Mafiascum has (in addition to the whole mafia section, obviously) a pretty active forum game section, where the overall trends are game-show-inspired trivia and - more relevant in your case, I suppose - strategy games, which can be further divided into large social games a la Survivor and smaller mind-game-heavy games. There's also a multiplayer text adventure that has been going pretty strong for about two months now, though it's really more of an exception.
Also, unlike here, successful short games tend to do pretty well in signups for reiterations.

Man, I figured I would sign up for a few of these, so I started with GameFAQ, but honestly at first glance that forum isn't very user friendly. You can't even post at first.

Also, Pokemon Reborn (http://www.rebornevo.com/forum/index.php?/forum/40-roleplaying/) has a roleplaying forum, but it's a very small community

Going to add Coloholics Anonymous (http://coloholicsanonymous.com/index/viewforum.php?f=27). I don't know much about it, it was recommended to me by Eevee from Space Battles. But it seems comparable to Games N Things, they have fancy banners.(Yeah I totally don't know what to say about it)

Giant in the Playground seems down a lot.

I've heard that Nuzlocke Forums (http://s7.zetaboards.com/Nuzlocke_Forum/index/) has some good forum games.
One of my favorite forum games there, Land Wars V, I got kicked out of over my discord getting hacked, but the rest of the forum game hosts there show some decency.

While we're at it I'll share a secret cookie of mine. You'll have a hell of a time trying to host your own game but you might be able to join something they've got going easy enough. It's a really small community but that's not always bad.

"video game forums" http://vgf.com

Codex Playground

I think the entire category known as 'Codex Playground' is fair game, BUT they do have a specific ad hoc section for quests, called CYOA Land.
NationStates.net. The quest/RTD/SG community is small, but they have done these kinds of games before. Perhaps a trend can be set on NS?

Found this interesting, Kongregate (https://www.kongregate.com/forums/36-forum-games) divides them into "Forum Games" and "Continuous Games".

The species ALRE forums have some nice stuff in terms of forum games, if you like civilization and evolution based games. Main problem is they are underpopulated. Perhaps 90 people was the maximum number who were ever online at once.

Sufficient Velocity actually has 3 forum game boards: Quests (https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/forums/quests.29/), Roleplaying (https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/forums/roleplaying.4/), and Grand Strategy Roleplaying.  (https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/forums/grand-strategy-roleplaying.49/) It's worth linking all of them because they're all a different type of game.

Probably Roleplaying.

I figure Grand Strategy Roleplaying is for games similar to SpaceStory or Legends of Ealos?

Kind of like SpaceStory - mostly it's a very specific style of game, basically the AlternateHistory.net forum game culture from before it was was expelled from that site, where people control an entire state and write chunks of RP for multiple characters belonging to it and events it carries out. Other types of game, even the ones that could also be described as "grand strategy roleplay," tend to end up in the Quest or RP boards.

Also, a forum my friend showed me a while ago: https://forum.novelupdates.com/forums/community-games.1022/
I've yet to do much over there, but it seems fairly active.

Here is my review/intel for GameFAQs:

Disclaimer: I was active here a few years ago. Some things have changed. Biggest being GameSpot merger.

I believe most, if not all forums and posts are mirrored on both sites. GameSpot is more content rich, so if you like to see people's avatars that's the place to go.

In general GameFAQs is very minimal. Which in some ways is good, especially if you're a new game host. There is no font color and only basic things like bold, italic, ect. Uses < > instead of [ ]. They did add image posting, which was after my time there.

Pretty much any active forum can and does have forum games. There is a forum for every published game virtually, and new and classic game boards stay active. For example, I hosted a lot of RPGs on Super Smash Bros Wii U Board (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/633202-super-smash-bros-for-wii-u), months(years?) before the game came out.

The moderation really wants you to stay on topic, so games in these places need to be especially relevant. For example a Smash Bros Mafia was permitted, but a Smash Bros kingdom game was removed.

There are "safe havens", secret boards and private boards among them.

The most vanilla option is Roleplaying and Fanfiction (https://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/2000115-roleplaying-and-fanfiction), though activity is minimal, but viable. I have never done anything here.

EVERYBODY PANIC (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/428-everybody-panic) is a place where everyone *Panics* and avoids THE PIT where IT lives. There are a lot of random improv battle threads, design a floor of a tower games, occasionally fend EP from IT threads, and they were open to a forum game or two I tried there. Love it.

Then the meat and potatoes(and unfortunately, private) is Games-N'-Things (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/839-games-n-things). Anything goes. Very active. Great people.
UPDATE: Found out you can go to the GnT link when logged in to send invite request!

Eagle-Time is a community that hosts content, and networks many smaller communities that the MSPA forums spawned some years back. It's a home for original suggestions games and interactive fiction projects, comics, creative and artistic projects, game design, and plenty of goofy internet culture stuff. Their Mafia and forum game community is currently experiencing a bit of a revival, and a lot of big projects that used to be hosted on the MSPA forums found a new home there as well. All in all, pretty chill group of folks. I'd definitely recommend checking them out, if you like well-crafted interactive fiction stuff!

Realax (http://forums.realax.ru/) - Deserves an honorable mention, but it's in Russian (even though it was apparently made in Ukraine). You can use Google Translate or something. It's big enough to run a SpaceStory-sized game but small enough for it to easily gain traction.

Just found this. (https://www.roleplayerguild.com/)*

It was the top pick on a new search engine (https://www.ecosia.org/) I've been trying.

You don't have to add this to the list but this (http://mysteryisland.freeforums.net/) is a new forum I recently created, dedicated to forum games. There is basically zero activity as of now but I thought I'd put this here just in case. Most of the current members are people from a different forum that went down months ago, we were all in the same forum game together until the site went down all of a sudden.

I am trying to host a game there now, but there is little activity/interest even from most of the current members, so I'm not particularly hopeful about it. But anyway, feel free to drop by and visit our empty forum!

Are there any highly active forum game websites? Like Bay 12 is a website and a forum, that happens to have forum games, by contrast...
