I mean i get it. Optimization when the game is finished. But will the game ever be finished? What if the big financial crash comes and the world economy breaks down? It's only a question of time, ask any expert on the field. Or what if WW3 breaks out?
It just sucks, when you already can sustain a big Fort, but when you are finally able to do bigger or rather more interesting things in the game, your framerate plummets to rather unplayable rates.

As Toady's said, many, many times before, no matter how many times people may deny it in forums, he does do optimization from time to time. Game wouldn't run at all of he didn't. He even mentioned optimization of slow adventurer sites as part of the next release (hasn't mentioned it since, but still...).
Yes fortress mode slows down and dies after a while. That's a really difficult problem. Will take some dedicated time and perhaps involve rewriting Fortress Mode altogether to bring it's ancient code more in line with the rest of the game. Will happen one day, more likely when playing other site types has been thought out in more detail. Or not. Does it matter?
As you say, zombie apocalypse could happen next week.

Even if its not blatent optimisation, Toady's reshuffling and new features (such as the new entity animal handling) can reduce lag in critical areas, such as overpopulation.
