Title: Strangest punch ever

Human adventurer, legendary dodge. First hit from minotaur lands, but passes through the head! How is this possible? Could it be the problem with the raws? Vanilla DF 44.03, mayday tileset

This happens sometimes due to quirks in the game's combat system.

I've noticed it happens mostly when extremely large creatures attack very small critters. Never thought it could happen with human-sized target.

My advice here: step back and let it suffocate because its upper spine is damaged.

The second pike stab brained it (Legendary pikeman). First hit missed with legendary pike, while first punch from mino landed vs legendary dodge... This is some Darkest Dungeon-grade RNG bull. No pun intended.

I've seen this kind of message before when I've severed hands/feet that were being punched/kicked at me.  Possibly the mino started the punch before it fell, then the game changed the mino's body positions because it fell, then when the punch finally landed the game realized there wasn't enough reach for it to actually hit your head even though it had rolled a hit.   (Reach is a real thing but I'm not sure how it works so this is an educated guess)

the mino lost access to the ability to punch so just imagine the punch and all the force with it died on a nerve level and you got hit with a meaty noodle of an arm going through your character's hair.

This absolutely makes sense. Thanks!

P.S: my stomach hurts from laughing too hard

The minotaur punches you in the head, gently caressing your hair !
Large groined minotaur : Did you heard the one about the bull in rut and the helpless human ?
You : This is terrifying

You dodged the punch at a molecular level.

Holy shit, legendary dodger indeed.

I've seen this message on attacks before, but I wasn't paying enough attention to if their spines had become jelly before the attack landed. If I ever run into it again I'll be sure to keep it for research.

Yeah, being paralyzed while an attack is in progress is probably the culprit behind this

Following up on my earlier post, it turns out a limb that's being swung at you doesn't even have to be severed to make it pass through you, damaging it is enough.  Examining the unit's left hand body part flags shows muscle_loss,muscle_damage,skin_damage and "unk20" but no nerves are severed.

For both of these attacks I made a q(u)ick stab at the hand when it was shown being punched at me but still "distant".

EDIT:
Hitting the upper arm will also make the hand pass through.  No nerve damage this time either.

In my experience, "but the attack passes right through" is synonomous with "but the attack produces no damage", and has happened with attacks from very small creatures against large ones.
