So after a short bit, I managed to gen a world! It has a nice little saltwater swamp next to an ocean and a (possibly extinct) kobold cave.
That's four tiles of swamp, but here's the kicker, there's only flux stone in the ocean, not the swamp. So to get iron we have to dig underneath about a million tons of water. There is no problem with this.
Here's the world if you wanna look it over yourself. I know there's an artifact thong somewhere in there, so that's a plus.
Here it is on DFFD! (http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13583) Take a look at it, someone who can get legends viewer working xD
Calling Shotgun on the bunny
"Miiiiine!" Stoat hissed as she leaped forward and hugged onto the bunny. Everyone took a step back in shock as she threatened to bite anyone that got close to her precious bun. Oddly enough, the bunny was the calmest thing in the situation. It just kept nuzzling the ground in search of anything to eat. Stoat brought the bunny towards a grassy area and gave a death glare to all who got close.
Oh wow. Apparently digging ramps to close to the beach means that the waves wash into them. Didn't know that. Well, I guess that's an explanation for the random hole in the ground full of water next to the beach.
Now, the big downside with this fort is that the map is actually kinda small, so any invaders only have a short distance to travel before they get in. We'll need to do something to set up a defense that works nigh-instantly.
https://i.imgur.com/640a0ML.png
Put a lot of fortifications on the side of this hallway into the fort, and fill it with archers! This will help against the kobolds at least.
Speaking of which, I thing we should demand tribute from them first. They're weak enough so that if it backfires, we can fight back well enough.
I started a farm, and I wanna try some of these hip new cavern plants. Cave grapes? That's gotta make some great wine.
Well, that's all for this time! Next time, I'm likely to finish this meeting hall that I started digging out.
You gotta be sh*tting me with this cave name.
I'm sorry, you... you just have to be.
Speaking of caves, I saw another one that was labeled as a human cave, and another that was an elven cave. So at least we have a diverse amount of thieving vermin.
Ooh, migrants! Just in time for the new meeting area too.
Let's see, what do we got? Two farmers and a gem setter. One of the gem setters is married to one of the farmers, but don't have on screen children. Meanwhile, the other farmer is married, but neither her husband or only child live here with her. Interesting.
Well, if you aren't dorfed and okay with having your dwarf being married, say the word.
DAMN YOU KEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!
Well, it's autumn now, so except it to be Stoat's turn soon.
I'd like a dwarf, profession doesn't matter.
I don't remember if I asked for a dorf or not, but if you ever make any of those hunters into archers I'll take one.
You're both archers then! Tis what I was planning to do with em.
Speaking of which, remember that defensive hallway I mentioned?
That's a whole lot of fortifications and a training room. Apparently archery targets are significantly more glitchy then I thought, but I saw MottledPetrel using them, so...
I am trying to mess with it though so the station command works... they seem to like running to the other end of the wall instead of on the right side of the fortifications.
I don't have a good food system or bedrooms up yet... that's gonna have to be Stoat's job.
I believe a system of doors that can be locked should be our method of controlling the archers. That way, we can lock paths we don't want them going down, directing them down paths we want them to move to.
In other news, I've made several large mining tunnels, in an effort to find iron. This map said there was flux stone, but were we just unlucky? We could have made a grave mistake with this embark, for all we have as of yet is more conglomerate and granite then we could ever need.
As I wrote this, I gave out a long sigh, as I have missed several nights of sleep on this work. I've decided I can't do this forever, so I shall pass this task ahead of us to Stoat. I shall not be the one to lead us to riches, she will.
Farewell for now my faithful recruits, but feel free to tell me if you find yourself in need of my skills once more. Until then, goodbye.
Two OOC things about downloading this, first, the world is for 44.07, you can try to transfer it to 44.08 though if you want Stoat.
Second, since this caused issues last time, please try to stick to ASCII :D
Third, this is a mod, dunno if you have to have the mod downloaded yourself or if you can just use a modded world. I think that's how it works? You're gonna have to test that one yourself.
Here ya go Stoat Tales! (http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13637)
OOC in spoiler.
So, my plan for this turn is to focus on military side of things. I'll mostly be improving our current defenses and conducting raids, among other things. Hopefully things will work out during my time playing. Feedback on my logs is welcome.
Also, I've noticed in my time playing the the framerate is INCREDIBLY high for as many civilians and animals we already have. Anyone know what the settings are? Things are terribly laggy in my personal fort and some tips would be appreciated if it's not to much bother.
Log 1
The Spring Months
Finally it begins. I've been called down from the distant mountain-homes to bring glory to the mighty fortress of Bandithorses. My predecessors have already made this place something to admire, and with hope there will still be much left to gawk at once my time here is finished. My area of expertise is with the military, and so I've put myself in the position of captain of the guard. I'll be seeing many a raid through if the gods are good to me, and I pray I can accomplish much in admittedly short time here. Wish me luck, friends. I'm sure I'll need plenty of it.
Formalities aside, I suppose I should get started. It's come to my attention that our main defense resides deep within the dark of the caverns. Frankly, this won't do. Cave adaption is a cruel mistress, and dwarves stunned and retching are not worth much as fighters. With that in mind, I've decided to relocate our barracks above ground in hopes to combat this issue. In time, the uppermost floor of it will be turned into a watch tower for our marksdwarves to fire through.
Here it is currently. The drawbridge will be kept closed unless our swordsman need to help break a siege or head off on a raid. The lever is located in the main meeting room.
And speaking of sieges...
A raid already! Luckily, this attack is of the pitiful sort. Our marksdwarves and wrestlers dispatch of the few elven recruits there are in moments.
With the vile thought of elves in our minds, I feel like now is as good a time as any to discuss one of our lost soldier, who goes by the name of Tomb Raider. I've uncovered word of his goings on and they're... less than noble.
It appears during my predecessor Hun's time here, our raider made his way out of the dungeons and into the elven city, where he's taken up a life of crime. Best of luck to him then, I suppose. He'll surely need it for his new line of work.
With that out of the way, I reckon it's time for a brand new raid. I'll be sending out our trained swords for this mission. I pray they do not disappoint.
I've set my sites on the elven retreat of Forddawned, which lies a short ways to the North east.
They'll be going in stealthily and looking exclusively for livestock. The elves often hold fearsome beasts, and a breeding pair of big cats or bears will aid our efforts just as well as plundered steel or shining trinketry.
And with that, the spring months have come to a swift close. Our raiders will return in early summer, and I'll write of their escapades as well as progress on our barracks then.
Farewell for now!
Yet another OOC in spoiler.
I tend to deal with my enemies the traditional way. AKA, throwing my entire military power at them and hoping that the most of my warriors live. This is mostly due to laziness on my part, and the mild fear that whatever defensive project I start will have some fatal flaw in it, and my entire fort will come crumbling to the ground.
So, I need some help. Specifically with navigating our lever system and death-by-bolt storm hallway.
***SPOILER FOR LOG IF YOU WANNA BE SURPRISED***
Also, apologies for not getting an image of the elf siege before it was fended off. It took me by surprise completely, and I forgot to take a picture of the horde while it was alive. I'll try to be a bit more consistent with that. Sorry.

Summer is shaping up to be a season to remember.
Log 2
The Summer Months
As if on queue, this beast reared its ugly head at the southern most part of our lands, just after spring's end. The barracks are still unfinished, leaving a direct path inside. I've been forced to move the military to face the creature out in the open, lest it get in and burn everything to the ground.
That billow of smoke in the middle is where the creature is at. Some of our civilians got caught up in the fighting, and the poor soul to the left is one of our marksdwarves.
Aaaand...
The bird is dead, and not a single casualty. A little disappointing of a fight, but Bandithorses lives another day at least, though its forest does not.
There's little that I can do to stop the burning, so while the fire rages, I figure I should go over some of the less notable matters.
The raid I began last season went swimmingly and our swordsmen returned with a plethora of different animals.
Wolves are the most exciting thing that was stolen. One of them already took it upon itself to fight off the titan, so I figure that the slight effort it was to get them will be made up for swiftly.
I commissioned a display to be made to store the beast's corpse in as well. It may be a bit macabre of a display, but I feel such a momentous victory is worth some commemoration. Though I'm having trouble finding the beast's corpse in the long list of the slain...
Aside from that, there's little else t-
(https://i.imgur.com/4Hiu0TE.png)
Curse them indeed. The elves come again, this time with a vast score of men and beast alike. 20 or more elves, with just as many or more war grizzly bears. The barracks are still wide open, leaving me no choice but to face them in the field. May the gods shine upon us this day.
Fourth of Hematite, 144
(https://i.imgur.com/sBuVYFu.png)
The battle is won, but at a great cost. Nearly half of our military was cut down in the fighting, and the rest have been wounded, myself included.
Wags, Mottledpetrel, and Hun are among the dead.
With the loss of so many of my men fresh in my mind, I've decided to seal off the barracks' in-fort entrance until further notice. Construction will continue, but the risk is too high to keep it open. I regret not having done that in the first place. I'm not a man keen on foresight, unfortunately.
On top of grievous injury and death, many of our citizens have begun mourning.
There is a bright side, at least. The injuries sustained by myself and my comrades are not mounting. They will need time to heal, as will I, no doubt, but crippled they are not. Bandithorses lives yet another day, for better or for worse.
I'll begin building tombs as soon as I can. Wags, MottledPetrel, and Hun will receive the grandest of them all. There are two artifact caskets on hand, and I'll be giving them to Hun and Wags. To make up for Mottled's lack of a splendorous coffin, I'll put one of our more valuable artifacts in his tomb instead.
With our military in a sorry state, I've recruited some new members to my squad, Guys with Big sticks. Pikachu17 and a random fisherdwarf are our new recruits.
I noticed when looking at our main squad that our fighters are told to pick up whichever weapon they want. This seems like a bit of an impracticality to me, so I'm going to arm them all with swords to speed up training.
I'll be creating a new squad of spearmen as our main infantry/band of raiders as well. As captain of the guard (or gourd, according to one of my predecessors), I feel it's my duty to stay in defense of the fortress, so it would be best to have someone else leading the charge off fortress soil.
In other news, it looks like during my time out of commission, MrLurkety has withdrawn from society and claimed a craftdwarfs workshop.
No snags have been hit in his efforts, so I figure construction will be done before summer concludes.
The final stages of barracks construction are well underway too. All that's needed now are some armor stands and archery targets, and finishing touches on the roofing.
I'll give a breakdown of each layer once it's completely finished.
And our brewer delivers, just in the nick of time.
Not terribly impressive, at least as far as artifacts go, but it should make for an alright addition to our collection.
And with that...
and this...
Summer has wound neatly to a close. Most of our soldiers are back in fine health (myself included), and our newest band of warriors are training hard and well. Come year's end, by my estimation at least, we'll have our military armed in full and in fine fighting shape.
But all of that's some time away, and with autumn here already, it's time to conclude this log. Summer has been a trying season, and if its events are anything to go by, the fall months may be just as much of a struggle.
But let us hope that it won't be.
I bid you all farewell on that note. Wish me luck yet again, if you'd be so kind. I have a feeling I'll be needing much more of it.
Short OOC in Spoiler
So, I noticed that on this world in particular, almost all of lairs on the map are visible in the missions screen. Anyone know why? Would love to raid giants in my own fort.

Life is merciless, isn't it?
Log 3
The Autumn Months
My luck is nonexistent it would seem. A mere fourteen days into the season and the quiet of late summer has come to a bitter end. It's time once again to take up arms, so let's get to it.
I've received instructions from reliable sources on how to operate the fortress's defenses, and I'll be following these instructions as best as I can, so with hope our fortifications will serve me and my warriors well.
A few more names to add to the casualties, hm? Our friends from the mountain homes are not the best at timing, and our liason is even worse at positioning.
Those bits near our bronze friend are the liaison's teeth. There's little I can do for him now.
Or is there?
I cannot explain it, but I am overcome with an unrelenting urge for vengeance. If I retreat into the fortifications, every single dwarf and animal will be crushed beneath this bronze fiend's strength. It falls to me, then, to put him down... or at least buy some time for our friends from the mountain homes.
That was... surprisingly easy. The creature didn't even manage to land a hit on me before he perished and left this thing behind:
It's a bit large, and the imagery isn't particularly compelling, but I feel like it might look quite nice in my personal quarters.
Unfortunately, no one thought it was a priority to carve out a reasonable lodgings for me, so I'm forced to make it for myself.
Nice enough? I think so. While we're on the topic of carving things out, our engravers have finished smoothing out the grand tombs.
Wags's tomb is furthest to left, Hun's lies in the middle, and Petrel's sits at the right. And as promised, I displayed the artifact crown Eshonsakrith in Petrel's final resting place.
Along with the tombs, our miners have nearly finished mining out the museum space, and nearly all of the needed pedestals have been completed
(https://i.imgur.com/31eMGRM.png)
Here it is as it stands. I figure by the end of the season it'll be smoothed out nicely, and fitted with plenty of display furniture and artifacts.
Beyond that, there's little else to report.
Aside from the fact that the whole of the mountain home has dispatched to trade with us, of course.
Eighty different travelers. Quite the entourage, if you ask me. Hopefully they brought something worth trading for along with them.
With the colossus dead, and nothing else worth documenting, I think it's time for a raid. I'll be sending out our speardwarves this time around.
Forddawned, the target of our last pillaging, will be their goal. Wolves were a nice addition, but they can't be turned into proper war beasts. And if the last elf siege is anything to go by, there should be plenty of grizzlies to go around, and those can be trained well enough. If they prove themselves on this raid, I might send them off fight the giantess Namdi Matchcontrol, and take back Blindphantoms, a rather fancy copper gauntlet.
While I was organizing the raid, our liaison and his troupe of traders finished unpacking, and it appears he's brought news from the mountain homes with him.
It's a truly flattering request, but who to appoint if I agree?
Honestly, I think it best to keep away from the homeland for the time being. The next time the opportunity arises, if it's during my time here, I'll be sure to appoint someone if a consensus on who to appoint has been reached.
And our speardwarves have already returned! Let's see what they've brought us.
More wolves. Disappointing. At least they did their job properly.
Before I send them off to retrieve that gauntlet, I believe they need further training. Some are barely novices, and there's no chance in hell that they'll succeed with skills that low.
While we wait, why not give a status update on our museum? Our carpenter finished off the last of pedestals, bringing the project to a close.
As well as the museum, construction on my personal quarters has completed
(https://i.imgur.com/oKzTLSJ.png)
Quite nice, wouldn't you agree?
And with that, it would appear autumn is but a few days from its end, which means it's time to conclude this log. It's been quite the season, and I have a feeling winter will be just as exciting. Wish me luck as usual, and farewell for now!

OOC in spoiler.
Sorry for the wait on this one, life got in the way. The rate at which the next three logs come through should be a lot quicker now since I have plenty of free time. They may take a bit more time than my previous iterations though since the frame-rate for the fort has plummeted to the the low forties since then, though. Also, when I mentioned the advice, I definitely meant it. The moment I picked this place up it turned into a dumpster fire and I have no idea how to put it out.

Spring
It's day one of my return to the position of overseer, and already the goblins have come to besiege us. It looks like I'm in luck though, as their front lines are mere recruits.
But if only it was just recruits. It would appear that they've brought a great host of beasts to aid them, and many of which appear to possess an ailment that could be rather troubling.
Let's hope we can snuff it out before it gets a chan-
(https://i.imgur.com/kAv7I5A.png)
Oh no.
An Elven ambush has sprung out mere seconds after the goblins arrived. It's a sizable horde of them too, and quite a few of our civilians are up on the surface, as well as our swordsman.
I've ordered the civilans to head inside, and told our swordsman to get into positions, but they don't seem to be listening. They'd much rather plunge themselves haphazardly into the ambushers.
Since there's a slim chance of convincing those numbskulls to get out of there, I've ordered the whole squad to attack the elves. It seems like they're managing well at the very least. However, a handful of non-military onlookers are up there. Too terrified by the fighting to move inside the fortress, it seems.
As the fighting continues, the goblins are moving closer and closer to the fortress.
In comparison to the elves, their siege is pitiful, but they're still a threat, so I've called for our axedwarves to come and serve as reinforcements.
In trying to get all of the surface dwarves down into the fort, I've let in a few uninvited guests through the opened gates. Luckily, I'm still down here commanding, and I'd say I'm quite confident I can make quick work of these stranglers should it come to that.
This is not the time for that!
Or perhaps it is. The elves are little more than mince-meat now, but there's still a formidable amount of goblins. My initial size up of them might've been a bit of an underestimation:
Most of those warbeasts are serving as mounts for the filth.
I've called for out swordsdwarfs and axedwarfs to head over to the position marked. The majority of them are still standing, barring a few wounded individuals, so they should have no trouble in dispatching these goblins.
Unfortunately, it looks like one of our axedwarves got a little bit too excited and was surrounded. It doesn't look like he'll make it.
And... The siege is over. Our swordsman and speardwarves polished off the last of the invaders with ease. I suppose it's time to look over our losses, then.
Here's our military now. Quite a few casualties, but not as bad as expected. I'll recruit a few unimportant men to the military to replace the dead.
The logs are a bit cluttered so I can't tell if any important dwarves were killed, so I'll put up the members list of each squad. Don't hesitate to mention if you notice anyone missing.

With all the finally out of the way, I suppose I should get to work on a project or two. First and foremost, we need a bridge at the upper-barracks. My original attempt at creating one failed for whatever reason, so let's hope it pans out better this time around.
Also, I've noticed in my short time here that MANY of our civilians are severely stressed. To try and combat things like this:
I've ordered our miners to carve out and improve part of our dining room to help bolster morale at least a little bit.
The empty space will be adorned with statues and plenty of extra seating once it's done.
I've also requested that our engravers smooth out the stone in the lower fortress layers.
Though I don't know how much help any of that will be, as it looks like things are worse than I thought. A jeweler went mad moments after seeing what was up on the surface. And down below, a fight broke out in the hospital between one of our militia captains and a metalcrafter.

He didn't survive.

Oh. Damn it.
It looks like life here has gotten to her. What a shame. I'll be sure to give her a tomb befitting her status.
And another death. This poor bloke was beaten to death by a crazed armorer. What is it with all of these people and their tantrums?
More and more dwarves are going insane, too many to even report on.
I don't ask for this often, but, I think I need some advice. Make people feel better isn't exactly my job, in fact, it's usually quite the opposite. But I have a feeling that if I don't learn how to console all these poor sods, this fortress is going down with me in it.
Anyways, I suppose I should point out some less troubling things. Specifically this:

Huh. Well, that's a pleasant surprise out of all of this. Though, there's something a bit strange about the site in question.

The human forest retreat of Latherwaters? Last time I checked, I was a dwarf. Who the hell are these people?

I guess that'll have to be question for another time, as summer has finally come. Since the start of spring we've lost 25 citizens, and I fear that if things keep up at this rate this place will be little more than a pile of rumble come next year. Wish me luck as always, and Gods help BanditHorses.
OOC in spoiler.
SPOILERS FOR LOOOOG
So, the fort was pretty much dead after the siege from the other log. So, to give the fort a proper send off, I decided to put everyone in a squad and send them out to try and conquer the tomb from years back. For whatever reason, though, one of the refugees decided to lob off poor Tomb Raiders head. I made a save file backup from before I did any of this, so if ya'll aren't happy with the results I'll put it up and we can go from there. Also, apologies to Deathpunch for not trying to keep this place alive till his turn. Maybe give him first/seconds turn for the next venture? Also also, sorry for the long wait on this log too. Had quite a bit that had to get done outside of the game. Also also also, I put the final fortress photos in a spoiler to keep the post tidy. The pictures were fairly massive.
Log 2
The Final Days
The fort is on its last legs, and I'm nearly certain that there's no way to salvage it. People are dying and going mad left and right, most of our founding members have keeled over, and many of our defenses have been toppled. So, after a short conversation with the other nobles, I've wrote up a plan to get everyone out of this place alive. Here's the debrief:
First, I'll be putting everyone I possibly can in the military. Anyone with children will be undrafted and sent to Latherwaters, the human settlement that recently linked itself to us.
Once everyone has been set up, I'll take myself and all of the others and occupy it. There may be a few people that have to be left behind, but for the most part, all of Bandithorses will have been evacuated. Now, you may be asking: "Why not just abandon the place and be done with it?". The answer to that question is fairly simple. The spirit of Bandithorses is our knack for pillagings and quiet raids against our enemies. Most here live for blood and theft, so why not go out doing what we love?
With that out of the way, I suppose I should start putting this plan into motion. Before I do though, I'd like to show off the fortress, at its last days. To remember it by, I suppose.

First and foremost, our main entrance. Not too much to look at to be frank, but still worth a picture.

Secondly, our outdoor barracks and fenced off animal pen. Definitely more impressive than the front gate. The barracks extends a few levels up, as can be seen.

Our death hall and lower barracks/shooting range.

Farm space, bootleg temple area and meeting hall/stockpile. This is where most people hang out these days. When they're not babbling or screaming, that is.

Here's the dining hall and hospital room. There's a few miscellaneous offices and whatnot to the left.
Here's our (in my opinion) most extravagant area of the fortress. On the top row, you have the library area, mass workshop space, and then the refuse stockpile. On the bottom row, lies our museum, decorate with a handful of artifacts. Going further right, you'll find a stockpile full of bins. Furthest right is our main tomb area. It's expanded much this year, unfortunately.

Next, our living spaces. Quite an a pretty eyeful, I'd say.

And finally, Derpy Dev's quarters and resting place. May she rest in peace.
Alright, now let's get down to business.
By my calculations, around 40 or so dwarves are already enlisted into the military. That's almost half our fortress. Those trained forty will come along with me and the other refugees. The only who won't be drafted are our wounded. They'll be "expelled" to the human settlement. I've compiled a list of them, that can be read here:

That's the lot of them. Quite a few are our important dwarves, sadly. I'll be expelling them immediately. I figure a few of their relatives will want to tag along as well, so fare thee well I say to them.
I ordered my men to rally up everyone as I jotted down the above list. Everyone has been put into their squads and is ready to head out.
Quite the entourage, wouldn't you agree? Together with myself and our trained fighters, we'll march on elven and soil and conquer it in the name of Bandithorses. But where to go?
Hm. I think I have an idea. Why not come full circle and take over one of the first places we ever raided? Clinchurns, the tomb up north. A little bit of downgrade as far as housing goes, but why not? One of our own decided to take up residence there, so I suppose it can't be too bad.

It's decided then! We march for Clinchurns!

The first of our men are heading ou-

Seriously?!
It's too late to stop, I suppose. Many of our commanders are too far to command. Run for Clinchurns!
Didn't I say run? sigh There's not much I can do for them other than wish them luck.
Oh how much I wish they listened to me.
What is with caravans and timing? Maybe they can lend a sword and fight with us to make up for their own poor planning.
This is quite the disaster. It's absolute madness up there. Most of the people fighting were part of our evacuation squad. The few in yellow are our speardwarves. Hopefully they can dispatch of these elves.
Huh. It looks like they did. There's only 8 people listed as "other", and none of them are filthy elves. Fantastic. Our dwarves are back to clearing off the map. Many are having mental breakdowns as they leave though, so this may take some time.

: )
The dwarves have sent us a report of the battle that took place there:

It seems all went-
Oh. Well, that wasn't the plan. I guess he got in the way. May he rest in pieces.
I suppose I should take a look at the fortress before I close things off for good.
There's only one adult, and a handful of children, none of which can be expelled. Which... Leaves me no choice for the fort other than:

Not the end I envisioned, but, I have no other choice. It's been quite the adventure here, and it is of course a shame to see it go. All goods things come to end though, I suppose, and now it's time to say farewell.
Goodbye Bandithorses!

Sadly you can't produce farm onion rings in dwarf fortress. You could cook onion biscuits with tallow, but you can't farm onions since they have no way to yield seeds.
There may be other options, but saving it at as .ods and opening it in libreoffice calc is not one of them, at least not without further editing.
=IF($A4<=$D$1,CONCATENATE("[PS_RF:",INDIRECT(CONCATENATE("ParserHelper!",ADDRESS(1+$A4,1),":",ADDRESS(1+$A4,IF($B$1<128,$B$1,128)*2-1))),IF(128<$B$1,":",""),IF($B$1>128,INDIRECT(CONCATENATE("ParserHelper2!",ADDRESS(1+$A4,1),":",ADDRESS(1+$A4,($B$1-128)*2-1))),""),"]"),"")
and concatenate doesn't support ranges in openoffice, so it only outputs [PS_RF:::::].
It would be theoretically possible to use 17/33/65/etc. individual cells with IF-choice between 17/33/65/etc. in a monster of IF formula. Practically writing it is too much effort for me, but you could do it and then uninstall gnumeric and its deps.
